<ul><li>The <keyword id="82181" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Meteorological-Organisation">World Meteorological Organisation</keyword> (WMO) is expressed concerned that bandwidths allocated for <keyword id="1671941" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G-technology">5G technology</keyword> could put the future of other applications, like early weather warning systems, at risk. </li><li>They claim that the decision to allocation 24.25 to 27.5 GHz for 5G technology would impair the accuracy of data collection. </li><li>The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has expressed similar concerns as it opposed the use of the 26 GHz band for 5G deployment since its used for satellite service. </li></ul>It's not just ISRO — global agencies are also worried that 5G airwaves will interfere with their satellites. The World Meteorological Organisation (<a href="https://public.wmo.int/en/media/news/wmo-expresses-concern-about-radio-frequency-decision">WMO</a>) has expressed concern over the allocation of bandwidth — 24.25 to 27.5 GHz — for 5G technology during the World Radiocommunication Conference 2019 (WRC-19). They claim that it will severely hamper the functioning of a number of different technologies — including weather early warning systems. "The race to release 5G technology threatens to squeeze out other radio-frequency dependent technologies, including the world's critical national severe weather early warning systems," stated the WMO. And the Europen Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) agrees. "The agreement reached in Egypt falls far short of ensuring 5G applications do not interfere with weather observations at 24 GHz," it said. The fight over airwaves The world's radio spectrum is a limited resource. Only a narrow band is actually useful for communication purposes. Within that narrow band, everything and everyone — from radio, TV, mobile phones, and WiFi to aircraft, ships, and the military — need to function. According to ISRO, it needs the 26GHz bandwidth to operate its satellites. 5G services could interfere with the data being sent back and forth. The WMO and ECMWF are more concerned with the opposite end of the bandwidth between 23.6 to 24 GHz. "That could lead to nearly ten times more interfering out-of-band emissions than what the WMO had recommended allowing," said the international agency. The catch is that the new regulations for bandwidth use for 5G will only come into effect after 1 September 2027. "The risk, therefore, is that 5G could roll-out more quickly than initially anticipated, creating an unregulated increase in interference in the 24GHz," explained the WMO. This means that telecom operators will be incentivised to deploy their 5G technologies before 2027 because there will be no regulations till then. Even when the regulations are enforced, they won't be asked to replace their technology — only adhere to more stringent standards. "Potential effects of this could be felt across multiple impact areas including aviation, shipping, agricultural meteorology and warning of extreme events as well as our common ability to monitor climate change in the future," said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas said in a statement. <ul><li><keyword id="55910" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="air-pollution" source="Orion">Air pollution</keyword> affects almost all parts of the world, with a tiny area still below safety levels.</li><li>According to a new study, only 0.18% of land area and 0.001% of the global population has <keyword id="6452351" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="clean-air" source="Orion">clean air</keyword>.</li><li><keyword id="6489235" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="polluted-air" source="Orion">Polluted air</keyword> can cause diseases such as asthma and lung cancer in people.</li></ul> Air pollution is one of the world's biggest problems, and it has reached a level wherein you are not safe from it anywhere in the world. You might be mistaken if you thought you were breathing clean air. According to a <a href="https://phys.org/news/2023-03-world-first-global-daily-air-pollution.html">study</a> by Melbourne’s Monash University, almost no area on earth has air pollution levels deemed safe by the World Health Organisation (WHO). <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Less than 0.2% land area has good air" comment="subhead" text="Less than 0.2% land area has good air">Less than 0.2% land area has good air</cmsannotation> According to the study, only 0.18% of the global land area is exposed to concentrations of PM 2.5 that are below the levels of safety recommended by the WHO. Professor Yuming Guo, who led the study, highlighted the importance of the study, said, "It provides a deep understanding of the current state of outdoor air pollution and its impacts on human health. With this information, policymakers, public health officials, and researchers can better assess the short-term and long-term health effects of air pollution and develop air pollution mitigation strategies.” PM 2.5 pollutants are tiny and can penetrate the thoracic region of the respiratory system, increasing the risk of death due to respiratory and cardiovascular problems such as asthma and lung cancer. While the situation has improved in Europe and North America, it has worsened in Southern Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Latin America, and the Caribbean. At present, more than 70% of days globally are seeing pollution levels above what is safe. "In this study, we used an innovative machine learning approach to integrate multiple meteorological and geological information to estimate the global surface-level daily PM2.5 concentrations at a high spatial resolution of approximately 10km ×10km for global grid cells in 2000-2019, focusing on areas above 15 μg/m3, which is considered the safe limit by WHO," Guo said, while speaking about the methodology used. The situation is worse in southern and eastern Asia as more than 90% of days had daily PM 2.5 concentrations higher than the safe levels. According to ISRO, the Gaganyaan programme will lay the foundation for a sustained Indian human space exploration programme in the long run. Also, the objective of this mission is to demonstrate the indigenous capability to undertake human space flight. Other than these, Gaganyaan will have both tangible and intangible benefits for India, including a step toward an affordable and sustained human and robotic programme to explore space and beyond. The mission will also generate ample scope for employment opportunities in advanced science and R&amp;D activities. This human space flight is expected to take about 16 minutes to reach the intended orbit. The space suits are created by the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre. For the training of astronauts, ISRO and Russian government-owned Glavkosmos signed a contract for training.
