A UN science panel has warned that the risk of catastrophic climate effects — including deadly heat waves, drought, famine, and infectious diseases —<a target="_blank" href="https://www.ipcc.ch/report/sixth-assessment-report-cycle/"> increases with each degree of warming</a>.Since then, planet-warming emissions have continued to rise. Today it ranges from $600 to $1,000. Climateworks' Mammoth plant also cost hundreds of millions of dollars to build, though the company didn't disclose the exact amount.The company, which has big-name customers including Microsoft, Shopify, Swiss Re, Stripe, and JPMorgan Chase, said cost reduction was a priority. It added that while the Mammoth project wouldn't achieve that, it would help it innovate further and make the technology more efficient as it scales.Climeworks aims to become large enough to remove 1 million metric tons of carbon a year by 2030 and 1 billion metric tons by 2050 — or a megaton and gigaton.Climeworks' operations in Iceland are powered by renewable geothermal energy. In a press call, Jan Wurzbacher, a cofounder and co-CEO of Climeworks, described the process: Fans draw air through filters to separate out the carbon dioxide, which is then compressed with water and pushed underground into basalt rock formations. Within two years the mixture turns into rock and is stored away for millions of years. In early 2023, an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/carbon-dioxide-removal-air-sky-machine-climate-change-climeworks-2023-1">independent third party verified</a> that the process and its results were sound."There is more needed to scale up this industry," Wurzbacher said. "It's about offtake. It's about markets, standards, and regulations. And it's about public and private funding. A lot is needed in that area, and we need to move forward quickly to reach our targets."Wurzbacher said Climeworks had projects in the early stages of development in the US, Canada, Norway, Oman, and Kenya.The US Department of Energy last year <a target="_blank" href="https://www.energy.gov/articles/biden-harris-administration-announces-12-billion-nations-first-direct-air-capture">announced $1.2 billion in funding</a> for direct-air-capture demonstration plants. But if you look at the backdrop of what's happening around the world, including geopolitical instability, interest-rate changes, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/9-elections-to-watch-2024-the-biggest-election-year-history-2024-1">election uncertainty</a>, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/yen-carry-trade-next-unwind-forex-market-currencies-trading-fx-2024-8">FX should be going crazy</a> at this stage, says David Barrett, the CEO of EBC Financial Group, a multi-asset broker.The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/what-is-forex">foreign exchange market</a> has three major participants, and none of them is making big moves now, he noted. The first is on the surface layer, where short-term traders are betting on currency shifts and yields, which have taken over more volume than historically. On the second layer, you have more speculative traders, mostly made up of hedge funds and trading firms. And on the third layer, you have bigger money, where the pension funds and government allocators sit.Short-term traders generally don't affect market direction as steeply. They are in-and-out traders. Much of the moves from the yen carry unwinding witnessed in August happened at this layer, Barrett said. The hedge funds or larger market makers tend to respond to flows that are coming through, making them neutrally positioned based on those flows.The last group, where the big money pension funds sit, trades foreign exchange for two main reasons: one, they allocate non-denominated currencies for their investments. Two, they hedge their currency exposure to remain neutral. They mainly readjust that hedge when currency rates move. And because we have not seen a huge amount of volatility in most pairs, they have been very quiet, he said.But the yen could once again shake up an otherwise boring currency market and more.In August, the US stock market saw a swift pullback (and recovery) after the Bank of Japan raised rates. Japan's near-zero <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/market-crash-japan-central-bank-boj-cools-interest-rate-hike-2024-8">interest rates </a>had made the yen a funding currency that was borrowed cheaply to invest in other assets where rates were higher — the so-called carry trade. When rates rose and the currency strengthened, the trade unwound.But what we've seen in the yen carry trade is only the beginning, Barrett said. We have flushed out the short-term positions. However, any significant move in the dollar, such as weakness due to interest rate cuts against a strengthening yen, would unravel deeper positions where pension funds sit.The big talking point in that trade is the Japanese pension fund, Barrett said. It has extensive exposure outside of Japan, and a strengthening yen is very problematic for it. Japan has the world's largest government pension fund with $1.6 trillion in assets, and a large amount of that is invested outside the country. The pension invests in foreign stocks, foreign bonds, and foreign commodities."Now, you may not think that's a yen carry trade, but it's absolutely the purest yen carry trade because all of that pension fund money started off as yen," Barrett said. "It's been sold, and it's been put into other investments abroad."The shift away from foreign asset interest has already begun. So far this year, Japanese investors bought $192 billion in Japanese government government bonds, the most in at least 14 years, according to<a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-10-01/japan-s-4-trillion-carry-trade-begins-to-slowly-unwind"> Bloomberg</a>. "So most people that I talk to in the interbank market are telling me that the options market is busier than the spot market. The options market is something that gives people optionality to react rather than having to be heavily positioned."Since the market has generally been long the dollar due to higher rates, most of the options trades would be hedging against a dropping dollar by buying puts, which increase in value if the dollar declines, or doing straddles or strangles, which is when you buy calls and puts at the same or different strike prices. And because volatility in the price of FX optionality is still low, hedges are relatively cheap, he added.

German carmaker Mercedes-Benz expects <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword> to become its third biggest market in its 'Region Overseas' over the next 2-3 years with demand anticipated to remain strong for luxury products, according to a senior company executive. The Region Overseas for <keyword id="20034825" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mercedes-benz" source="keywords">Mercedes Benz</keyword> comprises 118 countries, excluding North America, Europe and China. India is the fifth largest market in the region after Japan, South Korea, Australia and Turkey. The sales gap between India and Turkey is around 8,000 units per year. "Our Region Overseas markets which encompass 118 markets across the world and India happens to be market number five for us. So you can imagine the relevance and importance it serves not only today, but also for the future of the Mercedes Benz brand," Mercedes-Benz AG Head of Region Overseas, <keyword id="20836954" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sagree-sardien" source="keywords">Sagree Sardien</keyword> told reporters here. When asked about the expected timeframe to achieve the target, she stated, "We are convinced that with the way the Indian market is developing, we should see this happening in the next two to three years." Terming India a strategic market for the brand, <keyword id="20836953" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sardien" source="keywords">Sardien</keyword> noted that the company has seen sales of its high-end models grow in double digits for the last couple of years and expects the same to continue this year and beyond. She noted that the company will add 12 new models, including three battery electric vehicles, in the market this year. The company also plans to tap smaller cities as it looks to establish sales outlets in 10 new locations ranging from Jammu to <keyword id="19910725" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kottayam" source="keywords">Kottayam</keyword> to scale operations, Sardien stated. Mercedes-Benz India reported its highest ever sales of 17,408 units in 2023. Sardien said the electrification journey in India is picking up slowly for Mercedes-Benz with 4 per cent of total sales in the country coming from EVs. "I completely believe that we will see a double-digit (growth) in electrification for our product range within this market," she said. "Customers' preferences are obviously at a much slower pace than the demand we expected," she said adding the company would go according to the transformation of customers. Sardien noted that the company will not change its strategic direction. "It is clear that the future is electric for us, but we ensure that we cater for our customers' changing preferences and where market conditions are actually allowing," she said. When asked about the potential of the overall luxury car market in India, Sardien said it can touch 1 lakh unit mark probably by the end of this decade. "But I think there are some fundamental things that need to happen in the market and it is highly dependent on how customers transition here between the combustion engine and the battery electric vehicle architecture," she added. The luxury car market in India is around 47,000 units per annum and remains a miniscule part of the overall passenger vehicle segment which crossed the 41 lakh units mark last year. Expect India to be third largest market among 118 countries: Mercedes-Benz

<ul><li><keyword id="19896911" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Jio" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Reliance Jio" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Reliance Jio">Reliance Jio</keyword> has become the world's largest mobile operator in terms of data traffic.</li><li>The total traffic on the <keyword id="2003276" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jio" source="Orion">Jio</keyword> network has reached 40.9 Exabytes, marking a 35.2 per cent year-on-year increase.</li><li>This surge is attributed to the growing adoption of <keyword id="19916120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G" source="keywords">5G</keyword> and Home services.</li></ul>Reliance Jio, the telecom giant of India, has become the world's largest mobile operator in terms of data traffic, surpassing <keyword id="20669190" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="China-Mobile" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="China Mobile" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="China Mobile">China Mobile</keyword>. The announcement came on Monday as Jio revealed its quarterly results, showcasing staggering numbers and milestones achieved in various segments. As of March 2024, Jio boasts a subscriber base of 481.8 million, out of which 108 million subscribers are on Jio's True5G Standalone network. The number reflects Jio's stronghold in the Indian telecom market. According to a press release, the total traffic on the Jio network has reached 40.9 Exabytes, marking a 35.2 per cent year-on-year increase. This surge is attributed to the growing adoption of 5G and Home services. Notably, 28 per cent of the traffic comes from 5G subscribers, indicating a swift transition towards next-generation connectivity. Additionally, Jio's Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services have contributed significantly to the data traffic. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a dramatic 2.4x increase in annual data traffic, with per capita monthly data usage skyrocketing to 28.7 GB from just 13.3 GB three years ago. This surge underscores the growing reliance on digital connectivity in India. Commenting on the results, <keyword id="3820" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani" source="Orion">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited, expressed his satisfaction with the company's performance and its contribution to the Indian economy. He highlighted the significant achievements, including becoming the first Indian company to cross the Rs 100,000-crore threshold in pre-tax profits. Ambani said, "Initiatives across RIL's businesses have made a remarkable contribution towards fostering growth of various sectors of the Indian economy. It is heartening to note that alongside strengthening the national economy, all segments have posted a robust financial and operating performance. This has helped the Company achieve multiple milestones. I am happy to share that this year, Reliance became the first Indian company to cross the Rs 100,000-crore threshold in pre-tax profits." Ambani also emphasized Jio's role in driving the digital transformation in India, from upgrading 2G users to smartphones to leading the effort in producing AI-driven solutions. He noted, "With over 108 million True 5G customers, Jio truly leads the 5G transformation in India. From upgrading the hitherto 2G users to smartphones, to leading the effort of producing AI-driven solutions, Jio has proved its capability in strengthening the nation's digital infrastructure." He reiterated Jio's commitment to strengthening the nation's digital infrastructure and its continued efforts to provide innovative solutions to consumers. The company's retail arm, Reliance Retail, also showed robust growth, with a 36 per cent increase in footfalls and strong digital commerce platforms offering a broad brand catalogue. "Reliance Retail continued to provide customers endless choices through its robust omni-channel presence. We continue to offer product differentiation and superior offline experience through stores remodelling and revamping of layouts. Our digital commerce platforms also provide newer solutions to users with a broad brand catalogue. Reliance Retail also works towards strengthening millions of merchants through its unique initiatives in new commerce space", said Ambani. In addition to its telecom and retail segments, Reliance Industries Limited has shown resilience in its Oil to Chemicals (O2C) segment, despite challenging market conditions. The KG-D6 block has achieved significant production milestones, accounting for 30 per cent of India's domestic gas production. Ambani emphasised, "Strong demand for fuels globally, and limited flexibility in refining system worldwide, supported margins and profitability of the O2C segment. Downstream chemical industry experienced increasingly challenging market conditions through the year." He added, "Despite headwinds, maintaining leading product positions and feedstock flexibility through our operating model that prioritises cost management, we delivered a resilient performance. The KG-D6 block has achieved 30 MMSCMD of production and now accounts for 30 per cent of India's domestic gas production." In terms of financial performance, Reliance Jio has achieved several remarkable milestones. The consolidated EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization) at Rs 178,677 crore, while the consolidated Profit Before Tax (PBT) has surpassed Rs 100,000 crore. The company's market capitalization has crossed Rs 20,00,000 crore, further solidifying its position as one of India's most valuable companies. Tech analyst Dan Ives said in a note Monday morning that the Trump win was a "game changer," and raised his price target to $400 a share. Investors' top concern this week is inflation data, with consumer price index data for the month of October set to be released Wednesday morning.Economists expect a 2.5% year-over-year jump in CPI, compared to a rise of 2.4% in the prior month.Investors will get more inflation data on Thursday when the producer price index is released.
