Hangzhou, A daily wage labourer's son from an impoverished village in Uttar Pradesh, <keyword id="84384" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="asian-games" source="Orion">Asian Games</keyword> bronze medallist race walker <keyword id="12117720" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ram-baboo" source="Orion">Ram Baboo</keyword>'s journey from penury to fame is a fascinating story of a strong-willed man making his own destiny. Baboo, who won a 35km race walk mixed team bronze medal in the Asian Games along with Manju Rani, worked as a waiter to self-finance his athletics training and joined his father in road construction under MGNREGA scheme during the COVID-19 lockdown, as his family was hard-pressed. <br /><br /> "I have done everything possible in my life so far, from working as a waiter in Varanasi to digging up pits along with my father for road construction under MGNREGA scheme at our village," the 24-year-old Baboo told PTI in an interview. <br /><br /> "It's about determination and focus on your goal. If you are determined to achieve, you will find ways to reach your goal. That is what I did." <br /><br /> Baboo's father works as manual labourer at Behura village at UP's Sonbhadra district, earning Rs 3000 to 3500 per month which is not enough to run a family of six. Baboo is the only son while he has three sisters. His mother is a homemaker and sometimes helps her husband in his work. <br /><br /> "We don't have any land and my father is a labourer. His work is seasonal. During paddy season, he will have more work but in other months his income is less. So, I need to do all these things to realise my dream," he said. <br /><br /> "I was not good at studies and not interested also and so I wanted to make a career in sports." <br /><br /> Due to his mother's insistence, Baboo took the entrance examination for Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) near his home and got selected. He was admitted to class VI. <br /><br /> Baboo found it tough to follow what was being taught at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya and he began to lose interest in studies. Two years into the JNV stint, something made him decide on his future course of action towards his goal -- the 2012 Olympics -- where India won six medals. <br /><br /> "I was in class VII then and I watched at my school hostel television the likes of Mary Kom, Saina Nehwal, Sushil Kumar and Gagan Narang winning medals. The stories also came out in newspaper front pages the next day, and I read all of them. <br /><br /> "In fact, I kept cuttings of the newspaper articles and photos of the 2012 Olympics medal winners and kept them in my folder." <br /><br /> When he was at the JNV, he played all sports, including football, and he found out that he did not get easily tired even after a lot of running, unlike the other students. That was when he decided he would do long distance running. <br /><br /> He initially ran marathons, 10000m and 5000m but developed knee pain. On the advice of local coach Pramod Yadav, he later shifted to race walking which does not put too much pressure on his knees. <br /><br /> Baboo might have been born to semi-illiterate parents but he used social media to his advantage. <br /><br /> "I opened a facebook account and joined several FB groups relating to fitness and long distance running to find out who can help me in my endeavour." <br /><br /> In 2017, when he was around 17 years old, Baboo left for Varanasi where there is a proper athletics stadium and there he got in touch with coach Chandrabahan Yadav. <br /><br /> He took a rented house at Rs 1500 a month. His parents sent him a small amount of money and so he worked part-time as a waiter for one month. <br /><br /> "I got Rs 3000 per month for working as a waiter but they made me work till midnight and even at 1am. I had to get up at 4am for training at the stadium. It was very difficult for me. People did not respect me and misbehaved with me. So I left Varanasi and returned home." <br /><br /> In 2019, Baboo was able to convince a coach at Bhopal SAI Centre to take him under his wings. He then competed in the 50km event at the National Race Walk Championships in February 2020, just before the nation-wide COVID-19 lockdown, and finished fourth. <br /><br /> During the lockdown, the Bhopal SAI Centre was shut and Baboo returned home. His parents were finding it difficult to get work to survive. <br /><br /> "Luckily, we got work under the MGNREGA scheme and I helped my father in digging pits in road construction work. One person would get Rs 300 to 400 per day depending on the amount of work," he said. <br /><br /> After working for one and a half months under the MGNREGA scheme, Baboo became restless, and he left for Bhopal again. <br /><br /> In February 2021, he won a 50km race walk silver medal in the National Race Walk Championships and that paved the way for his entry into the Army Sports Institute in Pune with the help of coach Basant Rana. <br /><br /> After the World Athletics decided to remove the 50km event from its programme, Baboo shifted to 35km event and won gold in the National Open Championships in September 2021, and a few months later, he was called to the national camp in Bengaluru. <br /><br /> After winning gold in 35km at the National Games last year with national record time, Baboo got a job in the Army, and he is a havildar now. <br /><br /> "My age at that time was 11 months more than that in the eligibility criteria but I got exemption after winning the National Games gold. I am currently under probation till next month and I am getting around Rs 10000, which is the basic pay. <br /><br /> "After this, I will get full salary and I will be able to look after my parents properly." <br /><br /> Baboo also said that he will shift to 20km race walk from next season as the mixed team event is unpredictable because the combined timing of male and female competitors of a country is taken into consideration for medal. <br /><br /> "You never know, my colleague (woman race walker) may not be able to do well on a particular day, she may be sick but still taking part or she may be disqualified during the competition. All these are not in my hands. <br /><br /> "So, I am shifting to a 20km event from next year."

Indian trade unions to join global protests against Amazon India

New Delhi, May 1 () The railways will charge state governments for ferrying people stranded due to the coronavirus-triggered lockdown in its 'Shramik Special' trains, according to an order issued on Friday. <p> The fare would include cost of sleeper class ticket, superfast charge of Rs 30 and Rs 20 for meals and water per passenger.</p><p> After more than a month of suspension of services, the railways on Friday, which is also International Labour Day, announced six "Shramik Special" trains for migrant workers, students and others who were stranded due to the lockdown.</p><p> The first such service was run with 1,200 passengers from Hyderabad to Jharkhand at 4:50 am on Friday.</p><p> The other five which are scheduled to run include -- Nasik to Lucknow (at 9:30 pm), Aluva to Bhubaneswar (6 pm), Nasik to Bhopal (8 pm), Jaipur to Patna and Kota to Hatia (9 pm).</p><p> Each train is expected to carry 1,000-1,200 passengers.</p><p> "Passengers need not buy anything from the railways. State governments will coordinate and pay on their behalf," the railways said.</p><p> Thousands of migrants were stranded in places across the country since the lockdown was enforced on March 25, many even attempting to walk home hundreds of kilometres away.</p><p> On Friday, the Ministry of Home Affairs gave permission to the railways to run special trains for migrants and those stranded in different parts of the country.</p><p> States like Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Bihar, Kerala, Maharashtra, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Telangana have requested special trains to ferry migrant workers back to their home states.</p><p> "As per the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, it has been decided to run 'Shramik Special' trains from 'Labour Day' today to move migrant workers, pilgrims, tourists, students and other persons stranded at different places due to the lockdown.</p><p> "These special trains will be run from point to point on the request of both the state governments concerned as per the standard protocols for sending and receiving such stranded persons. The railways and state governments shall appoint senior officials as nodal officers for coordination and a smooth operation of these 'Shramik Specials'," the national transporter said.</p><p> Officials said that a list of hundreds of such services have been planned by zonal railways over the coming days.</p><p> The railways also clarified that that these are special trains planned for nominated people identified and registered by state governments. </p><p> "No one under any circumstance should come to Railway station looking for trains. We will not issue any tickets to any individual or entertain any request from any group or individual. We will allow only those passengers to board whom state govt officials will bring to Railway Stations. </p> "State government is the final authority to decide that who will travel in our trains," a railways spokesperson said. Due to a lack of sufficient safety systems, killing tens of thousands (no numbers were ever confirmed) and leaving more than half a million people with serious, long-term health problems.</p>
<p>It has been called by many as <a href="http://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2014/12/2/india-disaster-bhopal.html">the worst industrial disaster in history</a> and continues to affect the area to this day. Due to abandoned chemicals seeping into groundwater, the rates of cancer in Bhopal have <a href="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Cancer-cases-in-Bhopal-have-tripled-ICMR-study/articleshow/7582090.cms">doubled in women and tripled in men</a> in the years after the tragedy.</p>
<p>On Wednesday, protestors from around India and the world met to speak out against the lack of regulations and sanctions levied against the parties who they believe share the blame for the disaster. <h3>The Union Carbide pesticide factory still stands today. A crude wall has been erected around the it, but the site is still easily accessible by many local residents, many of whom are not even aware of the potential health threats that still linger in the area.</h3>
<h3>The factory was built in the late 1960s and by the early 1980s, the demand for the pesticide had dwindled. Cost cutting eventually led to safety standards lagging and more skilled workers quiting, leaving the factory in the hands of less trained laborers.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></h3>

Protests Rage In India On The Anniversary Of The Bhopal Disaster

NEW DELHI: BJP appeared to be bracing for fresh turmoil in the run-up to <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> polls after L K Advani expressed disinclination to seek re-election from <keyword id="6356847" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="gandhinagar">Gandhinagar</keyword> in Narendra Modi-ruled Gujarat.<br />
<br /> Although the central leadership turned down the request and sought to put a lid on the matter by announcing Advani’s candidature from Gandhinagar, the party leadership was keeping its fingers crossed. According to late-night reports, Advani has indicated that he would rather wait for the party central election committee to respond to his request to contest from <keyword id="6355556" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="bhopal">Bhopal</keyword>.<br />
<br /> Advani’s desire, conveyed to <keyword id="114039" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="BJP-chief">BJP chief</keyword> <keyword id="6355121" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Rajnath-Singh">Rajnath Singh</keyword> on Monday, to switch constituencies came as a surprise to the party because of his consistent public stand that he would fight only from Gandhinagar: the constituency which he has won since 1991. He had stated this as recently as on February 28 when the party announced its first list of candidates.<br />

The decision of the central election committee came after day-long drama that seemed to bring to the fore the bitter resistance of a section in BJP to Modi’s leadership. The saffron senior kept away from the deliberations on the ground that his candidature was under discussion even as reports swirled through the day about his reluctance to contest from Gandhinagar.<br />

<br /> Many in the party felt the attempted switch was meant to signal his autonomy of Modi and to emphasize that he could win from any constituency of his choice. With Madhya Pradesh already playing host to Sushma Swaraj, who represents Vidisha and whose equations with Modi are seen as tense, the desire to move to Bhopal was also suspected to be an attempt to raise a parallel axis vis-à-vis the ascendant troika of Modi, party chief Rajnath Singh and <keyword id="19496" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="leader">leader</keyword> of opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley.<br />
<br /> Party circles have for some time sniffed an effort to set up <keyword id="6355553" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="MP">MP</keyword> chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan as a counterpoint to Modi. The tussle in the party over Modi’s projection as PM candidate saw Advani suggesting that Chouhan’s performance as CM surpassed Modi’s as Chouhan had turned around Madhya Pradesh which, unlike Gujarat, was a BIMARU state.<br />

Some in the party also saw the move to shift constituency as reflective of Advani camp’s fear that his campaign may be subverted by workers who may look to proactively scuttle any post-poll trouble for Modi. Although Modi camp would have ensured that Advani won comfortably to ward off the charge of sabotage, workers remain apprehensive of the intent of Modi’s opponents in the party.<br />
<br /> Fearing that Advani’s shfit to Bhopal could be projected as another instance of senior leaders being humiliated under the Modi-Rajanth dispensation, the official faction had swung into action to dissuade Advani soon after he conveyed his keenness on Bhopal. The <keyword id="1589638" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Gujarat-party">Gujarat party</keyword> recommended just Advani’s name for Gandhinagar on Monday. On Tuesday, former party MP from Gujarat Vijay Rupani publicized the state unit’s insistence that the party veteran stick with Gandhinagar.<br />

Sources close to the leadership saw the sudden change in Advani’s preference as underscoring the tenacity of the resistance that Modi faces from “determined hold-outs”. A non-cognisable offence information report (NCR) was registered on Monday against Grover after a video showed him commenting on Indore's top rank in the Centre's cleanliness survey and purportedly claiming it had been "bought". <br /><br />Following the development, Grover shared the video of his controversial statement in a post on his X. <br /><br />"Sorry to Indore. You've got great people and a city. But politicians everywhere have got no chill! Unnecessary politics being made out of a statement made in jest in a playful conversation on Bhopal vs Indore. Where the audience had fun - no offence was meant. None taken by anyone. No one getting offended now was even present in the room," he said in the post late on Monday night. <br /><br />He further said, "Not sorry to any politician. Ever. No one. Any party. FIR kar lo (register an FIR). Case kar lo (register a case). Koi farak nahi padta (it doesn't make any difference) - I am not a pushover - won't be bullied. Don't make an issue where there is none. It might be an election year - but people are smart. Indori people - super smart. I'll come to Indore when I wish, as many times I wish - and am confident of Indori mehmaan nawazi (good hospitality)." <br /><br />On Bhopal vs Indore, his favourite remains Bhopal, Grover wrote, adding that it would be dishonest of him to put Bhopal lower when he feels it is not only Madhya Pradesh's best city but also India's. <br /><br />Indore city of Madhya Pradesh has remained on top in the Centre's Swachh Sarvekshan for six consecutive years. <br /><br />Addressing an event here on Sunday, Grover is heard in the video saying, "See, there is a concept - playing to the gallery, that is, wherever you go, praise it saying I have never seen such a nice city. Now the problem with me is that for three-four years I have heard that Indore is the cleanest city...you have bought the survey. It's a simple thing." <br /><br />Grover, however, immediately clarified that he was not saying there was filth in Indore, and that he meant several construction works are going on in the city. <br /><br />An NCR was registered against Grover under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 499 (defamation) and section 500 (punishment for defamation) on the complaint received from the Indore Municipal Corporation, Lasudia police station in-charge Taresh Kumar Soni had said on Monday. <br /><br />After an NCR is registered, if the complainant wishes, he can file a case in court at his personal level, he explained. <br /><br />Indore's Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava said, "I have seen Grover's video. His statement is an insult to the hard work of the city's people and sanitation workers for cleanliness. We will take appropriate legal action against this insult and also serve him a notice for defamation." <br /><br />State Home Minister Narottam Mishra, who is in-charge of Indore district, also criticised Grover's statement and said, "Those who have garbage in their mind will only see filth." <br /><br />Indore Municipal Corporation chief sanitary inspector Sanjay Ghavri, on whose complaint the NCR was lodged, told PTI that Grover's controversial statement had insulted the people of the city. <br /><br />"This statement has hurt thousands of sanitation workers of the city who are engaged in cleanliness work from early morning till late night," Ghavri said.

"The election results show people accept Prime Minister Narendra Modi's guarantee of delivering on guarantees," BJP leader and Union Minister Pralhad Joshi said here. <br /><br /> Joshi, who was BJP's election-in-charge for Rajasthan, took a dig at the Congress and promises it made in the run up to the elections. <br /><br /> "People have blessed BJP in three states, endorsed Prime Minister Modi's leadership and rejected Congress' false promises," Joshi said. <br /><br /> Former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister and BJP leader Raman Singh said in Raipur,"People have reposed their trust in Modi's guarantees." <br /><br /> Singh said the people have voted in the name of Modi and for his work over the past nine-and-half years. <br /><br /> Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan -- who is looking at his fifth term -- gave Modi's aggressive campaign ahead of the assembly election the credit for the party's performance. <br /><br /> "Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji is in the hearts of the people of Madhya Pradesh.
