A report published in September by the policy and research firm United for ALICE found that 3 million US nonprofit employees — nearly a quarter of the total nonprofit workforce — are living just above the federal poverty line. The report examined Americans who have identified as nonprofit workers on the Census' American Community Survey, including many employees in healthcare, educational services, and social assistance.The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meet-the-typical-alice-middle-class-poverty-housing-food-benefits-2024-4">ALICE demographic</a> is people who are asset-limited, income-constrained, and employed. The ALICE threshold varies based on local cost of living and household size. If an individual lives above the federal poverty line but can't afford survival necessities — like housing, food, and healthcare — where they live, they are considered ALICE. This might be $702 a month for a parent and school-age child in El Paso, Texas, or $2,158 a month for a parent and school-age child in Alexandria, Virginia.The cohort's financial experience is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alice-living-paycheck-to-paycheck-without-government-assistance-snap-medicaid-2024-5">marked by a catch-22</a> — their household income is often too high to get help but too low to comfortably afford daily life.Lisa Kelley, for example, lives paycheck to paycheck in Cincinnati. Often, the 47-year-old feels like she's "doing everything right" and is still <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/government-assistance-food-stamps-snap-doesnt-help-low-income-dinks-2024-5">unable to access</a> the assistance she needs."There's no help," she <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rent-healthcare-plasma-gen-x-government-assistance-2024-5">previously told BI</a>. "If you make too much, there's no help; if you are healthy, there's no help; if you don't have kids, there's no help."<h2 id="1051b53b-ec29-4b34-a6e5-059d162766d3">Nonprofit workers provide help, but they're also struggling</h2>About 13% of Americans live at or below the federal poverty threshold, meaning their annual household income is below $15,060 for one person or $31,200 for a family of four. Access to many assistance programs, like SNAP, Medicaid, and housing vouchers, is based on this measure, which <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/poverty-line-leaves-behind-low-income-americans-snap-medicare-wic-2024-6">largely hasn't been updated</a> since the 1960s. This measure was calculated when Americans spent about a third of their paycheck on food, whereas Americans now spend only 13% of their income on groceries.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alice-living-paycheck-to-paycheck-without-government-assistance-snap-medicaid-2024-5">ALICEs</a>, however, make up another 29% of Americans who <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retirement-savings-social-security-baby-boomers-without-savings-401k-poverty-2024-8">feel like they are living in poverty</a> but are out of reach of these resources because their paychecks are slightly too high. This leaves some choosing between putting food on the table, paying bills, or going to necessary doctor's visits. It's led some to take extra part-time jobs or rely on gig work — especially if they live in a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-food-healthcare-housing-cost-most-expensive-us-cities-2024-2">high-cost-of-living area</a>."We need help, especially those of us that are trying to go to work every day," Cherie Tobias, a 48-year-old Applebees server in Michigan who lives on $25,000 a year, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/middle-class-americans-earning-above-poverty-struggles-afford-food-medicine-2024-4">previously told BI</a>. "No matter how we feel, no matter how much pain we're in, we're going to try to push through to provide — but we go home defeated."Younger nonprofit workers are particularly struggling. According to the report, 37% of nonprofit workers under the age of 25 fall into the ALICE category. This follows larger ALICE trends, which show that workers under 25 are one of the main cohorts living out of reach of most assistance programs. Similarly, 23% of nonprofit workers ages 25 to 44 are considered ALICEs.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alabama-basic-income-single-mothers-afford-childcare-bills-birmingham-2024-8">Single parents</a> working for nonprofits are also facing grim prospects: According to the report, over half are living below the ALICE threshold. And, while 16% of white nonprofit workers were below the ALICE threshold, 35% of Black workers in the sector were struggling to make ends meet.It's an irony that addresses some of the larger struggles ALICE workers face in the US: Many of the larger support structures do not see them as in need, which exacerbates the need further. Nonprofit workers fill holes in the social safety net, but millions are financially insecure themselves

Boeing workers approve labor contract, ending a bruising 7-week strike

Starbucks had about 219,000 partners at its company-operated stores as of last October, according to its latest annual filing with the SEC.Here are the issues that they said they hope Niccol addresses:<h2 id="79829550-92ae-436e-bed5-8fa523e9ddc7">Some Starbucks stores should feel more like a 'third place'</h2>Not all Starbucks stores feel like great places to hang out, some partners told BI.One store in Florida, for instance, has an old, worn-down floor that has become difficult to clean, according to one partner who works there. That leads to a stench in some parts of the café that turns off patrons, they said."If you stand too close to the bar or lean over to get a straw, you might get a whiff," the partner said. "I've had customers who can see the condition of the floor, and they're like 'What?'"A Starbucks spokesperson directed BI to comments from former CEO Narasimhan on the company's July earnings call about Starbucks' plans to renovate about 800 stores in North America by the end of the company's 2024 fiscal year.Another partner at a Starbucks store previously told BI that the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/starbucks-new-system-to-make-slow-ordering-better-isnt-solution-2024-9">Siren Craft System</a>, which the company has touted as a way to streamline drink production and free up partners to serve customers, often forces partners at his store to put off tasks, including cleaning.Employees at many Starbucks locations also have to juggle serving customers who visit the cafés to enjoy their coffee there and those who want a quick cup of coffee to go — perhaps by ordering through Starbucks' mobile app — and to avoid talking to anyone. "It's no longer the third place," one <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/starbucks-online-orders-might-stand-in-way-new-ceo-plans-2024-10">Starbucks store manager in Florida</a> previously told BI. "It's a pit stop."<h2 id="fdc112e5-6ada-4c9c-b5f6-ea2fc7be3baa">Starbucks should hire more workers to shorten wait times</h2>Shifts at Starbucks stores are often short-staffed, multiple partners have told BI.One store in North Carolina usually has just two or three partners on duty outside of a two-hour shift in the morning, one partner who works there said. The store needs one or two more workers during those shifts to function smoothly and get customers their orders without long delays, he said.Starbucks stores often schedule more workers in the morning, when customers are likely to stop by for coffee. But far fewer workers are on the floor later in the day at some stores.The Florida store with the worn-out floor is often overwhelmed when students from a nearby school stop by in the afternoon, the partner there said."Monday through Friday, there's an afterschool rush at 3:00 p.m., and we never have enough people to work it," the partner said. That leads to "big lines that wrap around the building," the partner added.<h2 id="38169ef0-e68a-4c5e-b436-7044011ebda9">Starbucks needs a better way to manage mobile orders</h2>Partners at some stores say that they struggle to fill orders that customers place through the chain's mobile app in a timely manner, BI has reported.During busy times of the day, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/starbucks-worker-long-wait-times-down-to-staffing-mobile-orders-2024-8">one Starbucks store in North Carolina</a> receives up to 20 mobile orders at a time, a partner who works there told BI. This year, the problem has gotten so bad that the store has closed in-person ordering just to catch up, the partner said.Another partner in South Dakota told BI that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/starbucks-online-orders-might-stand-in-way-new-ceo-plans-2024-10">promotions through the app</a>, such as four drinks for $20, make it especially hard for workers to keep up.<h2 id="54d77444-ab80-4f8b-b80d-ec2470e4c620">Starbucks should rethink its bring-your-own-cup incentive</h2>In January, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2024/starbucks-becomes-first-national-coffee-retailer-to-accept-reusable-cups-for-drive-thru-and-mobile-orders/">Starbucks said</a> that it would start letting US customers bring their own clean, reusable cups to cafés to hold the drinks that they order. The move was meant to cut the number of single-use plastic cups that the chain uses, and customers get a 10-cent discount and rewards points for the effort. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2024/a-better-cup-for-all/">Starbucks said</a> about 400,000 of its rewards members brought in a personal cup for an order in the several days following the announcement.But a partner at a Starbucks in Florida said those incentives are too minor and don't seem to be pushing many customers to bring in their own cups. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Boeing workers are striking for the first time since 2008.</li><li>The walkout could cost the embattled planemaker billions in lost revenue if it drags on for months.</li></ul>Boeing is facing its first strike in 16 years — and it could deal a billion-dollar blow to the planemaker if it drags on.More than 30,000 <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-factory-worker-pressure-make-miracles-happen-report-2024-9">factory workers</a> are <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-workers-preparing-to-strike-rejected-contract-wage-increase-2024-9">poised to walk out</a> starting Friday morning after the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) overwhelmingly voted to reject a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/seattle-boeing-workers-unhappy-raise-pension-contract-negotiations-25-increase-2024-9">tentative labor agreement</a> with Boeing, and to go on strike in pursuit of a better deal.Boeing's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2008/9/boeing-workers-go-on-strike-again">last strike in 2008</a> went on for almost two months, causing the company to deliver about 70 fewer commercial aircraft than usual in the affected quarter. The walkout depressed revenues in the period by $4.3 billion, Boeing said at the time.Another strike of that length would cost Boeing at least $3 billion, according to a TD Cowen research note cited by The New York Times. Jefferies analysts estimated a 30-day cash impact of $1.5 billion, and warned a strike "could destabilize suppliers and supply chains," CNBC reported. The rejected deal would have cost Boeing an extra $900 million a year if passed, they noted.A Boeing strike in 1989 cost the company $2.5 billion in lost revenue, and the next one in 2005 cost it about $1 billion, the American Action Forum <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.americanactionforum.org/insight/the-economic-impact-of-strikes-an-historical-boeing-case-study/">noted in a paper this week</a>. However, the conservative-leaning policy-analysis nonprofit said that Boeing might make some of that money later instead of missing out on it entirely."While strikes, especially recent ones, have been costly, there is no clear trend in how they have affected year-to-year revenue," the AAF researchers wrote. "This may be because Boeing generally delays orders rather than losing them, so their revenue is time-shifted rather than diminished."Even so, they noted the pending strike could be especially painful given Boeing <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-to-plead-guilty-isnt-out-woods-yet-government-contracts-2024-7">recently agreed to a plea deal</a> tied to the crashes of two 737 Max planes. "The police are friends of the people and work for the public. We cannot imagine a society without the police. Therefore, I request our police members once again to ignore rumours and return to their duties in a phased manner, ensuring that security arrangements are properly in place," he said, emphasising the crucial role of the police in maintaining public safety. BGMEA Director Mohiuddin Rubel, a participant at the meeting, told the paper that they were going to reopen their factories for the betterment of the country's economy and workers. A case has been registered against four persons for <keyword id="20497088" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="culpable-homicide" source="keywords">culpable homicide</keyword> not amounting to murder, and efforts are on to apprehend them, an official said. The victims, Lakshman Dabhi (35), Khodabhai Makwana (32) and Viram Keraliya (35), were digging at a mine near Bhet village in Thangadh taluka of the district when they died of asphyxiation on Saturday, the official from Muli Muli police station said. The trio did not have helmets, masks or other <keyword id="20754876" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="safety-equipment" source="keywords">safety equipment</keyword> when they were working for the accused, he said. As per the first information report (FIR), the accused did not provide helmets or other safety equipment to the deceased while employing them to dig a well. They died after inhaling gas from the well, it stated. A case was registered against Jashabhai Keraliya, Janak Aniyaria, Khimjibhai Saradia, and Kalpesh Parmar, the official said. Bodies of the deceased labourers have been sent for post-mortem, he added. Earlier in February, three workers died after inhaling toxic gas that emanated after a blast triggered by gelatin sticks for an <keyword id="19932636" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="illegal" source="keywords">illegal</keyword> mining operation in the district.

Some of her colleagues who clean airplane cabins, transport luggage on the tarmac, or work as curbside agents have reported dizziness, nausea, and vomiting on the job — symptoms of heat exhaustion.Ortiz this week is joining workers in the airline, fast-food, and farming sectors in 13 cities to demand that employers provide education and training about the symptoms of heat exhaustion, develop a plan of action for getting employees medical attention, and ensure that employees have access to water, shade, air conditioning, and rest breaks. This summer, a sanitation worker for the city of Baltimore died from hyperthermia, or overheating, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating <a target="_blank" href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2024/07/15/usps-worker-heat-stroke-death-wendy-johnson/74414304007/">whether a postal worker's death in North Carolina was related to the heat</a>.There are no national standards to protect indoor and outdoor workers. The Biden administration in July <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bidens-heat-standards-workers-water-shade-rest-2024-7">proposed rules for employers with workers exposed to temperatures of 80 degrees Fahrenheit</a> or higher, but it could be years before they take effect. The rules could also be scrapped if former President Donald Trump wins the election in November.Some states and cities have enacted their own policies, including California and Phoenix. This fall Maryland is expected to become the sixth state to adopt heat protections for workers. Meanwhile, Florida and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/texas-extreme-heat-construction-crews-lose-breaks-water-2023-6">Texas have blocked such protections</a> at the local level.The Phoenix City Council in April unanimously passed an ordinance requiring all city contractors and subcontractors to develop heat-safety plans for outdoor workers, including at construction sites and airports. The ordinance also requires access to rest, shade, water, and air conditioning. By 2025, closed-cab vehicles, like those that move airport baggage, must have AC.Ortiz described the ordinance as a big win but said she still hadn't seen her employer, Prospect Airport Services, make changes. The company has more than 8,500 employees at 26 airports around the US and has contracts with airlines to provide passenger services, baggage handlers, and gate agents."The ordinance took effect in April, and we're in August now, still fighting for our basic human rights to a break and water," Ortiz said.She and other airport contract workers tried to deliver a copy of the Phoenix ordinance to their supervisor on Tuesday, but he wouldn't leave his office, Ortiz said. Last August, Ortiz and 10 other employees filed a complaint with Arizona's occupational-safety authorities, who opened an investigation and conducted an on-site inspection, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2023/09/06/phoenix-excessive-heat-airport-workers/">The Washington Post reported</a>. "When possible, misting stations are also set up at the airports in partnership with airport or airline officials. Employees are also told not to sit or loiter in jet bridges for their own safety and that of those around them."In California, farm workers are especially vulnerable to extreme heat. Lourdes Cardenas is a farm worker who lives in Fresno, California, where it has reached upward of 105 degrees Fahrenheit this summer. She said even though the state has a heat protection law, companies don't always follow it. Last summer, while working in tomato fields without shade, she had a headache and vomited. She had to drive herself home to rest."Many workers don't say anything when they feel bad because they are afraid they will be fired, or because they earn so little that they feel they have to take risks to get a paycheck," Cardenas said during a press conference on Monday hosted by labor unions, including United Farm Workers.Fast-food workers at Waffle House and Starbucks told BI that AC units at some locations were broken for weeks last summer, causing the restaurants to be hotter than 80 degrees."We know that the planet is getting hotter and hotter every year, and we're seeing skyrocketing conditions for workers that people may not always think of when they think about the heat," said April Verrett, the president of the Service Employees International Union, which is helping organize this week's rallies. "Folks on jet bridges or in the kitchen, where temperatures can exceed 110 degrees — they're making these demands that it's time for employers to act now."
