The Indian government too has made way for funds to boost female entrepreneurship, while VCs have been actively looking out to bridge the gender gap in the country's startup sector. The government’s Startup India runs a Women Entrepreneurship programme as well. However, funding is still a challenge for female entrepreneurs in India. According to a <a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/start-ups/why-women-entrepreneurs-are-missing-from-india-s-startup-story-11582267821850.html">report</a>, the percentage of funded startups with at least one female co-founder went down from 17% in 2018 to a mere 12% in 2019. Yet, there is hope. According to a report by Bain &amp; Company and Google, women entrepreneurs can generate 150–170 million job opportunities in India by 2030. According to the draft rules, patent application put in by a woman developer/innovators will be prioritised over other applications to elevate women entrepreneurship across the country. </li><li>In fact, even if one of the members from the group aiming to file a patent is a female, the application will be accelerated for examination by <keyword id="149104" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-patent-office">Indian Patent Office</keyword>. </li><li>At present, the process takes 5-7 years including filing an application, the publication involved, examining the patent and finally granting it to the group. But, the DIPP is planning to trim it to 18 months by March, 2020. </li></ul>While companies in India <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/gender-diversity-may-be-a-mere-buzzword-for-corporate-india-a-recent-survey-shows-some-worrying-numbers/articleshow/67041718.cms">struggle </a>to strike the right gender balance, the Indian government plans to aggressively push for women entrepreneurship, making the patent process much faster. A recent draft rolled out by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) <a href="https://www.bloombergquint.com/business/patent-applications-by-female-innovators-to-get-faster-clearance#gs.yAtIm_s">is seeking amendments</a> in Patent Rules, 2003. It is not only considering <keyword id="6418358" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Patents">patents</keyword> filed by women innovators, however. Notably, there was no such provision in the country’s patent rules so far. This may be because not a lot of women entrepreneurs have sought patents. While, <a href="https://www.thestar.com.my/tech/tech-news/2018/04/30/a-third-of-global-patents-by-women/">according to World Intellectual Property Organisation (Wipo) data</a>, women account for nearly one-third of patents, globally, with the highest number of patents coming from the biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and chemistry sectors, it noted. Overall, Indians account for only 17%-18% of total registrations. The country marks seventh for the patent filing office in the world. The DIPP plans to cut down on the time incurred while examining and granting patents. To accelerate the patent granting process, the department is also looking to increase its headcount with more hirings and evolving with the growing technology. But, the DIPP is bidding to trim it to 18 months by March, 2020. India wants to dramatically speed up the processing time of patent applications filed by women

<ul><li>Over 77% of the women intend to start a small business to support their families financially.</li><li>But most of them are stalled by childcare and and domestic responsibilities, as per <keyword id="14270607" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IWWAGE-report" source="Orion">IWWAGE report</keyword>.</li><li>According to the report, the women have lack of clarity or information on what kind of business they can start; and don’t have the access to seed capital.</li></ul>Two-thirds of women who hail from underprivileged backgrounds have a burning need to support their families – and intend to start a small-scale business. As per a survey conducted amongst Anganwadi hubs in Delhi by an NGO Initiative for What Works to Advance Women and Girls in the Economy (IWWAGE), 84% of the families are supportive, while 72% said they would be permitted to travel outside their homes to avail of training programmes. However, over two-thirds of women who are keen to start their business, are stalled by childcare and domestic responsibilities. “This study highlights that women are eager to take up business endeavours, given some space, understanding and encouragement in the form of skill training, economic management along with others,” said <keyword id="14268720" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="neelanjana-gupta" source="Orion">Neelanjana Gupta</keyword>, project manager at IWWAGE. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Lack of financial support and skills" comment="subhead" text="Lack of financial support and skills">Lack of financial support and skills</cmsannotation> According to the report, the women have lack of clarity or information on what kind of business they can start; and don’t have the access to seed capital. They are well-versed digitally, as 7 out 10 know how to use mobile phones and have effective communication skills. As many as 76% of them have smartphones, and 78% have access to an internet connection. Also, 73% of the women have their own bank accounts, while 42% of them use them to avail government schemes and benefits. However, they lack knowledge about bank loans, interest rates or how to deposit or withdraw money from their accounts — which become hurdles for future entreprenuers. “Poor support networks, absence of mentors, and lack of access to information and communication technology are critical challenges faced by <keyword id="74945" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="women-entrepreneurs" source="Orion">women entrepreneurs</keyword>,” says the report. Most of them also do not possess the know-how to start a business. Yet, a lot of them are keen to acquire skills to engage in activities that will help improve their economic status. “It reflects that despite the lack of support from family and other gendered boundations, women in India are looking for ways to support themselves and their family along with seeking social independence,” said Gupta. Half the respondents of the survey expressed an interest in taking up stitching and sewing to earn an income, followed by pickle/papad making; and embroidery. “These preferences were similar across the board for entrepreneurs and non-entrepreneurs surveyed with 81% respondents also expressing a keen interest in learning skills that were not heard or known of,” the report said. Most underprivileged women are keen to start businesses but lack skills and financial know-how

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=karnataka&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Karnataka</a> just got a whole lot cooler as it prepares to play host to the country’s first all-women tech park. 
 
The site for this park is in a village located 40km south of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=bengaluru&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Bengaluru</a> called Harohalli. 
 The tech park, which is an initiative of the Government of <keyword id="6354780" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Karnataka">Karnataka</keyword> has been launched as part of the proposed special incentives to encourage women entrepreneurs. 
 
Spread over 300 acres of government allotted land, the tech park will clock another first as it will be planned and designed by women architects and women contractors will take care of the construction as well. 
 
According to K Ratna Prabha, Additional Chief Secretary of Commerce and Industries Department, Government of Karnataka, the idea behind the state government wanting to create an exclusive tech park for women was to give women <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=entrepreneurs&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">entrepreneurs</a> a much needed platform. 
 
He further added that the state government’s commerce and industries department has already received 56 applications over the past weeks from women entrepreneurs who have expressed a desire to set up shop at the park. 
 
He sees the park as a golden opportunity for women entrepreneurs who are in a rented facility and want to expand. 
 
Once completed, the park which has garnered a proposed investment of approximately Rs 135 crores will provide employment opportunities to about 2800 persons. 
 
There’s more. As it turns out, international girls such as Toyota, Ikea and Walmart have already expressed an interest in the park and this is evidence to the success the initiative has in store in the future. 
 
The tech park is proposed to be up and running by November 2016.

Plus, in today’s world you have teach by example and if I want my daughters to grow up to be strong, capable ,independent and happy women I have to first practise that in my own life. 
 
However, that said, managing work and being a mom is a challenging task as both the roles have their own set of demands on time and energy. When my girls were younger the main challenge was to make them understand why their mother wanted to work. Young kids expect their moms to be with them 24*7 and see a lot of such cases around them in their peer group. It took a lot of effort, reasoning and patience to make them understand, ofcourse giving examples of their play school teachers/educators who also stepped out of their homes to teach them helped a lot. 
 
With school going kids the main challenge today is to balance their activities, classes, concerts, matches, PTMs, exam schedules with work obligations. It gets quite demanding and there are occasions where one has to make an unhappy choice. But the key is to remain guilt free and see the larger picture though I agree it’s easier said than done.”

Having launched her recent perfume line ‘Lust,’ in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=dubai&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Dubai</a> barely a week back, the actress is keen to establish herself as an entrepreneur, as well. 
 
Her aim is to create a brand by tapping into various categories. 
 
At the moment, Leone’s recent line of investments includes a franchise for a box league cricket, web-based short stories, and an online game apart from fragrances. She is also keen to enter categories such as shoes, accessories, jewellery and apparels with her own line of products. 
Apart from focusing on Bollywood, the actress who was always interested in business from a young age is keen to expand her brand profile in India.

In fact, the star remembers how as a child she would put up lemonade stands during summers and shovelled snow in the winters to earn money. 
 
Her official foray into the big bad world of business started with her understanding of adult content as a business industry. But, she wanted more. “I wanted to own a website and run my company and build my brand” she said in an interview and what followed was her handling everything. 
 
In order to manage her website, she learnt HTML, video-editing, photography among others and in the process of doing everything from start to finish, Leone also learnt the harsh reality of website traffic. 
 
“In a digital world, traffic is the best thing you can have. So I learnt where to send this traffic and how to capitalise all of it,” she added. 
 
Over the years, that also included her move to India from Canada, Leone has started believing in slow and steady businesses. By her own admission, she doesn’t believe in fast-paced businesses. 
 
It was only after she decided to participate in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=bigg+boss&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Big Boss</a> did she realise the enormity of the reach her brand had in the Indian market, which ultimately led to her deciding to move to the country with her husband.

While the Lust Deo is priced at Rs 249, the Eau De Toilet comes at Rs 999. 
 
The perfume line has been designed by the actress herself, and includes, women perfumes and men and women deos. 
 
The distribution of the products has already begun, both in the online and offline categories. 
 
 
2. Box-league cricket team Chennai Swaggers

Justifying her decision of buying a cricket team, Leone said that though she loved several games, she fell in love with cricket after coming to India. 
 
Chennai Swaggers features a handful of known names from the Television industry that includes Shabbir Ahluwalia, Mouni Roy, Sangram Singh and Ritwick Dhanjani among others.

This year also saw Leone taking to the pen and churning out original mobile-first collection of erotic short stories under the title Sweet Dreamsin association with Chiki Sarkar’s publishing house, Juggernaut. 
 
Released in April this year, one had to sign in one the Juggernaut app on their mobile phones to buy Sweet Dreams. After purchasing the title, all one had to do is sit back, as one short story would be delivered to their phone daily at 10 pm. 
 
Reportedly, Leone finished writing the 12 erotic short stories in a span of three months.
