<ul class="summary-list"><li>An <keyword id="13138182" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mh-60" source="Orion">MH-60</keyword> <keyword id="13138183" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="black-hawk-helicopter" source="Orion">Black Hawk helicopter</keyword> went down during a special-operations raid in <keyword id="11896847" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="syria" source="Orion">Syria</keyword> this month.</li><li>The helicopter malfunctioned and had to be destroyed because it couldn't fly back after the raid.</li></ul><p>Last week, <a href="https://www.sandboxx.us/blog/breaking-delta-force-kills-leader-of-isis-in-counterterrorism-raid/" target="_top">Delta Force</a> conducted a counterterrorism operation in northwestern Syria that killed Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, the leader of ISIS.</p><p>The hours-long raid <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/isis-leader-killed-in-us-raid-in-syria-biden-statement-2022-2" target="_top">killed 13 people</a>, including six children and four women. There were no American casualties, but that almost wasn't the case.</p><p>During the operation, an MH-60 Black Hawk helicopter flown by the elite pilots of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meet-the-armys-160-soar-night-stalkers-special-operations-pilots-2020-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment</a>, nicknamed the "<keyword id="11985115" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="night-stalkers" source="Orion">Night Stalkers</keyword>," had to land after suffering a malfunction. US forces then destroyed the chopper with an airstrike to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands.</p><p>For <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/night-stalker-how-us-military-pilots-get-americans-in-afghanistan-2021-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Night Stalkers</a>, the risk of a crash is omnipresent during these kinds of operations, but they are prepared for that possibility.</p><h2>Black Hawk Down</h2><div type="image" title="Destroyed US helicopter after ISIS raid in Syria" height="1265" width="2000" msid="89456129" hostid="261"></div><p>Night Stalkers are always ready should something go wrong with their helicopters, but their response depends on the severity of the problem, according to Greg Coker, a retired chief warrant officer 4 and legendary Night Stalker pilot.</p><p>"If you get a caution/warning light, the pilot will conduct actions in accordance with the emergency procedure for that helo. If serious, the pilot will notify higher [command] and land if necessary. It may be 'let's fly it and watch it,'" Coker said. "If an engine fails then the pilot would transmit a Mayday call over the radio. Combat search and rescue would be launched, usually a 160th asset."</p><p>Other helicopters taking part in the operation would land to pick up the downed helicopter's crew and passengers so they could continue the mission, Coker told Insider.</p><p>"The pilot in command will evaluate the helo emergency and make a decision to land or go to the target. We push our machines to the limit to complete the mission. The mission is always the priority," Coker added.</p><p>The operational environment also dictates how the Night Stalkers will react. If the emergency occurs in a permissive environment, the helicopter will be left behind to be picked up by the forces conducting combat search and rescue.</p><p>If it takes place over a semi- or non-permissive environment, then the helicopter will be destroyed either with explosives or an airstrike, as was the case in Syria last week.</p><div type="image" title="US MH-60 helicopter wreckage in Syria" height="1333" width="2000" msid="89456130" hostid="261"></div><p>Should a helicopter go down, its pilots and crew chiefs are ready to fight. In the past, Night Stalkers were lightly armed, carrying handguns and light machine guns, such as the MP-5. Now they carry the same weapons as their counterparts on the ground, and they know how to use them.</p><p>"All Night Stalkers are highly trained in weapons and tactics if found on the ground. They are all proficient shooters and considered an asset by the ground force and not a liability. [That was] one of the lessons learned after Mogadishu," Coker said, referring to the 1993 mission in Somalia in which two Night Stalker helicopters were shot down and their crews wounded or killed.</p><p>Coker, who flew <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/special-operations-ah6-mh6-helicopters-may-go-out-of-service-2021-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the AH-6 Little Bird gunship</a> for 11 deployments with the Night Stalkers, knows what a crash looks like. In 2004, Iraqi insurgents shot down his helicopter, but <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/night-stalker-pilot-teamed-up-with-delta-force-in-iraq-2021-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Coker and his co-pilot survived and continued fighting</a>, an experience he wrote about in "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Death-Waits-Dark-Guns-Dont-ebook/dp/B08QBNZDFQ" target="_top">Death Waits in the Dark: Six Guns Don't Miss</a>."</p><p>"Obviously you cannot train the actual event, but we do a considerable amount of planning and mission prep, thinking through such contingencies and how we would respond," a retired Delta Force operator who participated in hundreds of helicopter assault operations told Insider.</p><p>"Although it doesn't happen often, it does happen more than you might think. Helicopter mishaps are common downrange. When the adrenaline is rushing as you touch down close or on the X in the middle of the night with dust all over the place from the helicopter rotors, it's easy to miss that small berm or the extra foot of wall," which can damage or even bring down the aircraft, the retired special operator added.</p><h2>Notable crashes</h2><div type="image" title="Black Hawk helicopter shot down in Mogadishu Somalia" height="1331" width="2000" msid="89456131" hostid="261"></div><p>There have been three notable MH-60 Black Hawk crashes involving the special mission units of the <keyword id="12094696" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="joint-special-operations-command" source="Orion">Joint Special Operations Command</keyword>, joint component of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-socom-learned-in-afghanistan-means-for-future-fights-2021-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">US Special Operations Command</a>.</p><p>The first took place in the jungles of Panama during a training event in 1990. An MH-60 Black Hawk carrying 11 Delta Force operators crashed into the foliage, severely wounding all aboard.</p><p>The second, and most well-known, happened in Mogadishu in 1993 during what's known as during the Battle of Black Sea.</p><p>Two MH-60 Black Hawks taking part in a raid were shot down by Somali militia, starting a day-long battle in the streets of the Somali capital that left 18 Delta Force operators, Rangers, Night Stalkers, and regular troops dead.</p><p>The "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/movies-us-army-green-berets-say-get-their-jobs-right-2021-9" target="_top">Black Hawk Down</a>" incident has had a lasting legacy. In 2021, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/former-delta-force-members-remember-somalia-black-hawk-down-mission-2021-8" target="_top">the US Army upgraded dozens of the medals</a> given to troops involved in the operation.</p><div type="image" title="Osama bin Laden compound raid Abbottabad Pakistan" height="803" width="1200" msid="89456133" hostid="261"></div><p>The third crash took place during the US Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan in 2011. A specially modified stealth MH-60 Black Hawk struck one of the compound and crashed into the courtyard.</p><p>No one aboard was seriously hurt, but the helicopter had to be destroyed at the scene. The tail rotor survived the demolition and images of it were seen by the whole world the next morning.</p><p>"Helicopters are delicate beasts, and we are very fortunate to have the Night Stalkers. These guys are literally the best helicopter pilots in the world, and I would trust them with my life. It says something about their skills that despite the dangers we very rarely have any casualties," the retired Delta commando said.</p><p>"Our helicopters are the best maintained aircraft in the world. Serious maintenance issues rarely occur, but when they do the best air crews in the world will figure it out and continue mission," Coker added. Another helicopter went down on a US special-ops raid. Here's how elite aviators prepare for that worst-case scenario.

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6360409" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nasa">NASA</keyword> often draws its <keyword id="73998" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="astronauts">astronauts</keyword> from the military, but those personnel are usually pilots.</li><li>In the mid-1980s, however, NASA got its first <keyword id="640165" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Navy-SEAL">Navy SEAL</keyword> astronaut, Capt. William Shepherd, and he wasn't the last.</li></ul><p>It is no secret that <keyword id="359579" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Navy-Seals">Navy SEALs</keyword>, the special operations force of the US Navy, are constantly striving to out-perform themselves and each other, but how far can they go? In 1984, one of them went above and beyond his teammates and made history.</p><p>"At the time, NASA was taking astronaut candidates who were not just pilots," said Capt. William Shepherd, retired SEAL, and the first commander of the International Space Station. "There were candidates made up of doctors, engineers and scientists, and I looked at that and said, 'You know, I've spent a lot of time in the water in my SCUBA gear, and that's an awful lot like being in a space suit, so I think I'll just apply and see what happens.'"</p><p>Not long after, Shepherd learned he would become a member of the NASA Astronaut Corps, making him not only the first military non-aviator, but also the first Navy SEAL to go through astronaut training in US history.</p><p>After four years of training, Shepherd embarked on the space shuttle mission STS-27 (Space Transformation System 27), and launched into space for his first time December 2, 1988 from the John F. Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral, Florida.</p><p>"We are now at a crossroads, deciding whether we are bound to inhabit only the Earth, or if humans are to live and work far from the home planet," said Shepherd in an interview regarding the fifth anniversary of continuous life aboard the International Space Station. "Let us continue now with new explorations which are more expansive and more bold; voyages which will define us as a space-faring civilization."</p><p><div type="image" title="Navy SEAL NASA astronaut training" height="1664" width="2500" msid="77468327" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Shepherd's path to becoming an astronaut in service to the country started with Underwater Demolition Team Eleven, then SEAL Teams One and Two, and Special Boat Unit Twenty, all operating in the Pacific, Atlantic, and European theaters.</p><p>Although Shepherd was standing in the ranks among the most highly trained warriors in the world, he looked toward the stars to achieve more, he wasn't the only one. Capt. (SEAL) Chris Cassidy, a current astronaut, spent more than 10 years in the SEAL teams and was directly influenced by the previous achievements of Shepherd.</p><p>"In my experience with the SEAL teams and with going through BUD/S, it's given me the confidence to know I can accomplish anything that I want," said Cassidy in an interview with US Navy SEAL &amp; SWCC Page. "If you look at SEALs after their life in the teams, you'll find people in all different sectors of industry doing all types of things. I personally always had an interest in astronauts, and I followed Capt. Shepherd's career and was inspired by him to be an astronaut."</p><p>In 2004, Cassidy was selected for NASA's Astronaut Candidate Class and joined a group of fellow explorers including pilots and engineers. Shortly after selection, he began intensive training that included land survival, T-38 jet ground and flight training, Shuttle orbiter systems training, space station systems training, science and engineering briefings and orientation tours at all NASA centers, including the Kennedy Space Center and Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Alabama.</p><p>Currently, Cassidy is in command of the International Space Station on "Expedition 63." The current mission he leads is conducting research investigations focused on biology, earth science, human research, physical sciences and technology development, as well as providing the foundation for continuing human spaceflight beyond low-earth orbit to the Moon and Mars which is central to future space exploration as part of NASA's Artemis program.</p><p><div type="image" title="Navy SEAL NASA astronaut training" height="1664" width="2500" msid="77468330" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The Artemis program is an ongoing US government-funded crewed spaceflight program with the goal of landing "the first woman and the next man" on the Moon by 2024, and it is likely that a US astronaut currently serving in the program will be the next American to step on the surface of the Moon.</p><p>It is possible that astronaut could be Lt. (SEAL) <keyword id="8553647" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jonny-Kim">Jonny Kim</keyword>.</p><p>In 2002, Kim decided to leave his hometown of Santa Monica, California to enlist in the Navy and join the ranks of Naval Special Warfare operators.</p><p>"I didn't like the person I was growing up to become. I needed to find myself and my identity," said Kim in an interview with former SEAL, Jocko Willink. "And for me, getting out of my comfort zone, getting away from the people I grew up with, and finding adventure, that was my odyssey, and it was the best decision I ever made."</p><p>After completing Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S), Kim was assigned as a Special Warfare Operator to SEAL Team Three Charlie Platoon and served as a Special Operations Combat Medic, sniper, navigator and point man on more than 100 combat operations spanning two deployments to the Middle East including Ramadi and Sadr City, Iraq.</p><p>His experiences as a medic taught him about teamwork, humility and service. Upon returning home, he decided to challenge himself yet again and applied for a commissioning program that put him on the path to become a medical doctor. Kim's application was accepted and he began his residency to Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts.</p><p><div type="image" title="jonny kim" height="3712" width="5568" msid="77468333" hostid="261"></div></p><p>In 2017, Kim was a resident physician in emergency medicine with Partners Healthcare at Massachusetts General Hospital, and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He finally met his goal of becoming a doctor, but he didn't stop there. That same year, he applied to become an astronaut and was accepted, joining NASA's team on the Artemis program.</p><p>"I was told that with the right attitude, and with enough hard work, if you get up after every time you fail, you can amount to something and you can do positive work. You can leave a positive mark for our world, and that's what I aim to do," said Kim.</p><p>Kim's unwavering perseverance led him to be the outstanding American that many call a hero, and he encourages many others to follow in his path of greatness as well.</p><p>"Don't let that hunger for the unknown go away," said Kim. "That curiosity is so important, so you should maintain that passion for what you do. Never in a million years would I have thought I could have been an astronaut candidate. I didn't have the confidence from my childhood, but dreams are possible and all good things in life are hard to get, so persevere and don't give up!"</p>
