<ul><li>India is estimated to have over 13.5 million women-owned enterprises. </li><li>These enterprises are creating employment for nearly 27 million people in the country and can generate up to 170 million jobs over the next decade. </li><li>‘Women solopreneurs’ — who mostly opt for working remotely — account for 31% of the companies run by women. </li><li>Women labour force participation in India is among the lowest in the world and is stagnating at 25% — much below the UK and the US at 73% and 67%, respectively.</li></ul>Around 20% of India’s enterprises — at 13.5 million are owned by women. These <keyword id="74945" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Women-Entrepreneurs">women entrepreneurs</keyword> also provide direct employment to nearly 27 million others, says a report by Google and <keyword id="122749" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bain-Company">Bain &amp; Company</keyword>. As per the report “Women <keyword id="107737" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Entrepreneurship">Entrepreneurship</keyword> in India – Powering the economy with her '', ‘women solopreneurs’ — who work remotely — account for 31% of the enterprises. These are followed by ‘agripreneurs’ in the rural areas and other small businesses. But this is only the tip of the iceberg. The report believes that such enterprises can generate up to 170 million jobs over the next decade. This is over 25% of the total jobs needed to keep up with the growing population. “We have seen that women are hungry for opportunities to grow their household incomes. Hundreds of women in rural India want to learn more about doing business and many have already made the start to enhance their livelihoods. We are already running a pilot accelerator program for rural entrepreneurs from our Internet Saathi network,” said Sapna Chadha, senior country marketing director at <keyword id="45395" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google-India">Google India</keyword> &amp; Southeast Asia. Like most other contributions made by women, their role in the economy is significantly underestimated. Women labour force participation in India is among the lowest in the world and is stagnating at 25% — much below the UK and the US at 73% and 67%, respectively. In fact, almost 75% of the working age women in India do not have a paid job. Even in the rural farms, they represent 42% of the agricultural labour force but own merely 2% of the farmland. Social barriers, technological disruption and other stresses have kept women away from making a larger contribution. “Unlocking entrepreneurship amongst women in India is a complex effort, but it provides an unprecedented opportunity to change the economic and social trajectory of India and its women for generations to come. This will drive tremendous job creation and also deliver transformational social and personal outcomes for women,” said Megha Chawla, partner at Bain &amp; Company. Think it's still a man's world? These women would beg to differ.
The Women Presidents' Organization (WPO), a nonprofit membership group for women presidents of multimillion-dollar companies, today releases its seventh annual list of the 50 fastest-growing women-led companies. This year marks the first time it has included applicants from outside the United States.
"We saw production soaring, with an average revenue growth of 203% from 2009 to 2013," says Marsha Firestone, Ph.D., president and founder of <a href="http://www.womenpresidentsorg.com/">the WPO</a>. "Not only is the financial growth of these companies impressive, it shows that women entrepreneurs are making inroads in non-traditional businesses, such as information technology, transportation, and engineering."
The incredible growth of these companies is particularly impressive given the current business environment. Privately held U.S. companies ended last year with an average annual sales growth of 5.4%, the slowest growth rate since 2009, according to the WPO.
To qualify for the ranking, businesses had to be privately held, woman-owned or led, with annual revenue of at least $500,000. The ranking was determined by both percentage growth and absolute growth over the four-year period from 2009 to 2013.
This year, the average company on the list has revenue of $99 million and employs 657 people. And, proving it's never too late to launch the next big thing, 90% of the women are founders, and the average age is 48.

The 15 Fastest-Growing Women-Led Companies

But, having a woman in an executive position does lead to better performance, and the more women the better, according to the study.The study points out that diversity in general probably leads to higher performance. A single female CEO doesn't perform better than her male counterpart when controlling for gender in the rest of the company, but a higher rate of diversity throughout the organization has an impact.The Peterson Institute study is one of the largest on gender diversity, as it looks at 21,980 firms in 91 countries. But it's not the only one to be released recently that points out the benefits of female leadership.The "<a href="https://www.msci.com/documents/10199/04b6f646-d638-4878-9c61-4eb91748a82b">Women on Boards" study</a> performed by MSCI is more concrete in declaring the benefits of gender diversity."Companies in the MSCI World Index with strong female leadership generated a Return on Equity of 10.1% per year versus 7.4% for those without," the study states.Like the Peterson institute, MSCI says that just having a single woman on a board does not necessarily lead directly to more profits. The study suggests that at least three women are needed for their voices to be heard, and for the dynamics of the board to change "substantially."<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Jeff Swensen/ Getty ImagesHillary Clinton</div></div></div>The study also referenced other previous research, summarizing a few of the most salient points:<ul><li>"One study using mathematical modeling concluded that groups of randomly selected problem solvers outperformed groups of high ability problem solvers because the latter group's greater ability is more than offset by their lack of problem solving diversity."</li><li>"Informational diversity among a group improved performance, according to field research; the more complicated the task that required interdependent work, the more pronounced the effect of diversity."</li><li>"While homogeneous groups felt more confident about their decisions than diverse groups, the former groups' decisions were more often wrong compared to those of diverse groups, according to one study."</li></ul>Despite the evidence of these and <a href="https://theboardlist.com/resources">other studies</a>, the percentage of women in leadership roles is still frustratingly low, and it isn't changing."Growth in the percentage of women directors is growing glacially in markets - such as the United States - where regulatory mandates to improve representation do not exist," the MSCI research says.MSCI suggests that 30% female representation in leadership roles is "attainable without imposing an undue burden on companies." Boards are expected to hit that 30% number by 2027, but it could be accelerated with conscious efforts to improve diversity, according to MSCI.Sheryl Sandberg, Chief Operating Officer at Facebook, is well known for championing gender diversity. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sheryl-sandberg-quotes-women-careers-2014-8?op=1">She sums up the effects</a> women can have on a company pretty succinctly."Endless data show that diverse teams make better decisions. Companies with women in leadership roles perform better

Just when you thought <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> is progressing in <keyword id="112877" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Women-empowerment">women empowerment</keyword>, there comes a reality check. India has secured the 26th rank globally in terms of presence of women members on boards of companies with just a 7 per cent score while <keyword id="6356961" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Norway">Norway</keyword> tops the chart with over 40 per cent. 
 
According to a recent study on 'Women On Board 2016' by global recruitment tendering platform MyHiringClub.com and online job portal JobPortal.co.in, presence of women members on boards of Indian companies is found to be lower than the overall average for developing countries. 
 
"India needs to promote more women for senior management level. Presence of women members is very low, it's even below average percentage of developing countries," Rajesh Kumar, CEO, MyHiringClub.com and JobPortal.co.in told PTI. 
 
In this online study, a total of 38,313 listed companies participated worldwide and in India, 1,459 listed employers took part. 
 The overall percentage of women directors on board is 6.91 per cent in these listed <keyword id="46431" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="India-Inc">India Inc</keyword> companies as against 6.69 per cent last year. 
 
Norway is again leading the table with a higher percentage of women on board at 40.12 per cent, followed by Sweden (29.31 per cent), Finland (25.89 per cent), South Africa (18.31 per cent) and the United States (17.37 per cent). 
 
According to the study, 39 per cent in India are women, but only a fraction of that number makes it to the middle and senior management. 
 
The report further noted that the average board life of male directors in India is 3 years more than their female counterparts while globally, the difference is only about 2 years. Moreover, women directors on an average are 5 years younger than males. 
 
"The tenure of women members on board compared to male members is a major area where India Inc needs to rethink with a positive attitude. Globally, the average tenure is 2 years for women members on board, but in India, it is only 1 year," Kumar added.

That's a shocking percentage when you also consider that there are <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/women-college-men-2011-8">more women than men graduating from universities</a> and <a href="http://www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/facts_for_features_special_editions/cb13-ff04.html">graduate schools in America</a>. 
According to Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sheryl-sandberg-lean-in-2013-2">we're in a "stalled revolution" for women</a>. 
Ultimately having fewer women at the top is bad business. 
It's proven that companies <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/new-research-on-gender-diversity-in-the-boardroom-2012-9">perform better when they have more women</a> on boards. "Women add their own perspectives, experience and knowledge to the board, which cannot be found any other way than by having <keyword id="6358360" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="gender">gender</keyword> diversity," says Carol Evans, CEO of the <a href="http://www.nafe.com/?service=vpage/1474">National Association for Female Executives</a> (NAFE).
To identify the top companies that support women in leadership roles, NAFE recently compiled a list <a href="http://www.workingmother.com/best-companies/2013-nafe-top-50-companies-executive-women" class="p1">of the top 10 companies</a> for women to work for right now, based off a survey that resulted in 200 applications. Here's the final list of companies and why they're great for women:
1. IBM
Why it's great: Aside from having a female CEO, Ginni Rometty, this technology company has "more than 12,000 women that are considered part of the executive pipeline."
Headquartered in Armonk, N.Y., 30 percent of IBM's global workforce of 441,912 employees are women and 27 percent of them are senior managers.
2. Abbott
Why it's great: "In 2011, there were 77 percent more women in executive management roles at Abbott than there were in 2001."
Headquartered in Abbott Park, Ill., 49 percent of Abbott's workforce of 32,683 employees are women and 42 percent of them are senior managers.
3. AstraZeneca
Why it's great: "Formal mentoring programs (live and virtual) support women with the potential to move into leadership roles."
Headquartered in Wilmington, Del., 55 percent of AstraZeneca's workforce of 9,249 employees are women and 41 percent of them are senior managers.
4. General Mills
Why it's great: "There are sponsorship initiatives that pair vice-president-and director-level advocates with promising female leaders in the manufacturing, information systems and engineering functions."
Headquartered in Minneapolis, Minn., 40 percent of General Mills' workforce of 16,939 employees are women and 37 percent of them are senior managers.
5. Johnson &amp; Johnson
Why it's great: "Johnson &amp; Johnson’s Crossing the Finish Line program educates multicultural women and their supervisors about how to overcome barriers to advancement and accelerate their careers; in 2011, the program’s offerings doubled."
