The contest winner will receive prizes worth ₹750,000. The contest will also declare an all India rank for women coders for their implementation.<br /><br />The challenge received over 37,700 submissions so far. “The enthusiastic queries that we received, makes me believe that this year’s Geek Goddess will help corporate India spot the brightest women IT professionals in the country," said Sanjay Goyal, Business Head, TechGig.<br /><br />Last year, the competition received 68,791 entries.<br /><br />This contest will help reduce the gender bias that female IT professionals face. It is said that three in every four women are victims of workplace discrimination.<br /><br />“We believe that an inclusive and diverse workforce provides a competitive advantage in the marketplace. But it’s time we did. A group of teenage girls needs us to.<br />
<br /> A bunch of 12 to 14-year old girls of <keyword id="6361831" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="dharavi">Dharavi</keyword>, who have been fondly nicknamed the ‘<keyword id="3315631" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dharavi-coders">Dharavi coders</keyword>,’ are driving change with the help of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=technology&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">technology</a>.<br />

An initiative which was started by filmmaker Nawneet Ranjan in 2014, who permanently moved to Mumbai from San Francisco after being moved by the lack of inspiration or ambition in the lives of the girls who lived in these slums and who witnessed daily occurings of starvation, injustices and domestic violence.<br />
<br />
He vowed to do something about it and decided to instill in them the ability of dream and have oodles of confidence by introducing them to computers. As a part of Dharavi Diary of 2014, a slum innovation project that he began, he ensured that the girls were taught coding through the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) Learning Program.<br />

Later, they also used an open source app development tool, MIT App Inventor, to create their <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=apps&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">apps</a>.<br />
<br /> The initiative has paid off tremendously as the girls have developed a bunch of <keyword id="6354741" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Apps">apps</keyword> that tackle most of the everyday problems faced by the residents living in the slums.<br />
<br />
For instance, they innovated an app called Paani which alerts the slum residents when it is their turn to collect water from the community tap, making the lives of the slum dwellers a whole lot easier as they didn’t have to waste time standing long hours in a queue every day.<br />

<br />
That’s not all. They also have an app focusing on women safety. Called, Women Fight Back, the app has a distress alarm, location mapping, SMS alert and a feature that helps one select emergency contact numbers.<br />
<br />
Some of the girls have built another app that intends to make Education simpler. Instead of the traditional teaching in classrooms route, the app teaches subjects like Science, English and Math through experiential activities such as taking photographs of objects to learn what it is called.<br />
<br />
They haven’t stopped there.<br />
<br />
Another app teaches kids the importance of segregating waste and waste management in general. It also gives ideas to recycle items to create new products.<br />
<br />
What started as a small project with just 15 girls has today become a project which ahs roped in 200 students, including boys- giving the children of Dharavi an opportunity to dream. That too in just two years.<br />
<br />
A recent fire in the slum in January however caused serious damage and led to the children losing their mobiles, laptops apart from everyday essentials like blankets, clothes, books, utensils and beds.<br />

STEM jobs: Here are the average annual salaries for STEM-related job roles

After spending hours on internet, scanning through social media, writing emails and recruiting for different startups, founders of hiring startup ‘Belong’ concluded that top coders or product managers rarely apply for jobs.<br />

Vijay Sharma and Sudheendra Chilappagari said that most recruitments at these levels happen through connections or referrals, making it tough for employers to find great talent buried a few levels inside a company.<br />
<br />
The two have helped hire people for startups including Exotel, Practo and Instamojo in their earlier jobs. They have now focussed on their know-how into a hiring company that uses big data and rules to tell which gifted programmer is likely to move jobs or which manager is bored of the job.<br />
<br />
Belong not only matches skills but also checks if a potential hire can culturally fit in.<br />
<br />
"People leave a lot about themselves online. That helps us match a potential employee and the culture of the organisation," Sharma, who has so far bootstrapped the company to a 35-member team told Economic Times.<br />
<br />
The financial daily reported that the Bengaluru-based Belong analyses internet data and crumbs of information left on social media by potential hires to help companies identify candidates with high degree of precision.<br />
<br />
"People do skill matching all the time. But what really makes an employee stick is the culture," added Sharma, who has been in stealth mode since leaving Exotel last year.<br />
<br />
Many startups these days believe in hiring smart people and then figuring out a role for them, especially at senior levels. Mostly, these people might not be actively looking for jobs.<br />
<br />
"People have joined us from various industries like FMCG and telecom, and you don't see a direct fit most of the times," Saurabh Sengupta, who heads recruitment at Zomato, told ET, adding, “the deal maker is if they are like-minded. We are taking a lot of bets on people and not on resumes.”<br />
<br />
Belong, which was earlier known as Dataemo, has more than 15 paying customers including fast-growing companies such as Ola Cabs, Xiaomi, Snapdeal, Zivame and Akosha.<br />
<br />
It profiles companies and potential hires based on various factors including the state from which they are, whether they are parents or is the engineering team low on women coders.<br />
<br />
"Some people might even come to you and say we need ex-Army men in our operations team," said Sharma.<br />
<br />
Sharma told the financial daily that using Belong, recruiters have rolled out over 100 offers in the past nine months, typically for senior engineering and product roles.<br />
<br />
"We saw many of our friends, startup founders and others always saying, 'I would like to work with people I will enjoy working with and make an impact'. We are meant to belong, especially somewhere, where we spend 70% of our lifetime working," Sharma said.<br />

Speaking to TechGig after the finale, Surender Godara from SapientNitro said that for the first two virtual rounds, he was coding in C language but the final problems were so tough he had to switch to Java.<br />

Only the third runner-up, <a href="http://www.techgig.com/sonusingal">Sonu Singal</a> from <a href="https://www.facebook.com/algoworkstech?fref=ts">Algoworks Technologies</a>, was the lone winner to code in C# (C sharp) in the grand finale of Code Gladiators.<br />

Similar to <a href="http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2014-07-14/news/51485010_1_coding-talent-experience">the 2014 edition of TechGig Code Gladiators</a>, majority of the participants of this year’s contest too coded in Java, followed by C# and C/C++. Indian coders are in love with Java and here is the proof

"<span>Our internal stats suggest the imbalance isn't quite as severe as the survey results would make it seem, but there's no doubt everyone who codes needs to be more proactive welcoming women into the field," comments Stack Overflow.</span></span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>37.1% of women who code have been at it for less than two years, which might indicate that the gender gap is starting to close, very slowly. </span></span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>Salesforce was voted the "Most Dread" tech company by 72.2% of developers, beating out even Microsoft Visual Basic. </span></span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>15.1% of women coders are from India, versus 4.8% in the United States. </span></span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">17.7% of developers want to learn how to code for Android, making it the most desired skill set.</span></li><li>Objective-C developers earn the highest average salary at $98,828 per year, just above Node.js and C# - unsurprising given that those are the relatively niche programming languages that power a lot of cutting-edge web and mobile apps.</li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">48% of respondents have no formal education in programming.</span></li><li>Luxembourg has the highest number of developers per capita, at 39.8 per 1,000 people. Somalia, Chad, and North Korea are tied for last place with zero. Next to last is Congo, with .004 developers per 1,000 people.</li><li><span style="color: #222222; line-height: 1.5em;">The average developer is 28.9 years old. "<span>He or she was born in April 1986, just as the Chernobyl meltdown was taking place," says Stack Overflow.</span></span></li><li><span style="color: #222222; line-height: 1.5em;"><span>Developers from Norway are the most-caffeinated, drinking just over 3 caffeine beverages per day. </span></span></li></ul><p><span style="color: #222222; line-height: 1.5em;">Of course, no survey is precisely representative of every developer. Developers who work remotely earn 40 percent more than those who don't

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Getty Images</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Investing in startups is like bird watching, or at least that's the famous quote from legendary venture capitalist <a href="https://www.sequoiacap.com/us/michael-moritz/info">Mike Moritz</a>.</p><p>Over the past two weeks, I have listened to 146 startups pitch in rapid-fire succession at demo days for Y Combinator and 500 Startups.</p><p>Of those startups, likely five to six will emerge as the next Airbnb, Dropbox, or Reddit. The founders of the next billion-dollar startup have probably run through <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/airbnb-a-13-billion-dollar-startups-first-ever-pitch-deck-2011-9?op=1">their pitch deck</a> in front of me.</p><p>The rest of the flock will disappear from the sky, selling to a bigger company, going adrift, or maybe shutting down entirely.</p><p>For venture capitalists, Moritz advises not to look at the flock, but each individual startup. "Each one is different and I try to find an interestingly complected bird in a flock rather than try to make an observation about an entire flock," Moritz <a href="http://andrewchen.co/why-i-doubted-facebook-could-build-a-billion-dollar-business-and-what-i-learned-from-being-horribly-wrong/">has said</a>.</p><p>But you can still learn a lot from watching the entire group. Here's what this batch of companies showed about the direction startups are flying:</p><ul><li><strong>Security is the new hot ticket.</strong> Start listing the companies who have been hit with a hack in the last year (Target, Sony, Ashley Madison...) and you'll quickly realize why security startups are multiplying so fast. Compared to the on-demand delivery space where every company is delivering a different product but in a similar way, the security startups are approaching the problems in incredibly wide-ranging fashions and no one has emerged as the winning standard yet.</li><li><strong>Hardware startups are growing. </strong>20 hardware startup presented at Y Combinator's Demo Day - as many as B2B this year. It's not just iterations on the smart watch, though. Startups created everything from a new shower backed by Tim Cook to a Keurig for vegetables and a sandwich making robot. Hardware has proven a success with Fitbit having the most successful IPO of the year, and startups are jumping on making anything and everything smarter (that includes your mattress cover).</li><li><strong><strong>How we hire and recruit employees is about to change dramatically.</strong></strong> Several startups are looking to upend the hiring process by making it more efficient for businesses. What does that mean for the job-seeker? You may be taking an automated test, whether you are a coder or an accountant, and interviewing with an outside company first. It's these companies that will whittle down talent, run the background check, and do the initial phone screen before the hiring company even sees the candidate.</li><li><strong>Social startups are dead.</strong> Of the 146, only two were social networks. One focused on alumni as a networking platform, the other started as a dating app for lesbians before it pivoted into a social network for women. Not a single messaging alternative, photo-sharing app, or location check-in company presented.</li><li><strong>Money is falling from trees and even small businesses want a part of it. </strong>A lot of the "tech companies" were really just profitable non-tech small businesses. One condom company that presented said it had designed a non-toxic condom that women want. But instead of explaining the technology behind the design and how its what women want, the founder pitched the margins: It costs 5 cents to make, they put 12 in a box and sell it for $15.</li><li><strong>Everyone is now an "X for Y". </strong>There's a next generation "Bloomberg for investors" and a "Bloomberg for government data." There's also a "Twitch for live coding" and a "Twitch for illustration." A comparison to an existing company is an easy way to explain a product during a three-minute pitch. If you say you are the "Uber for moving," a user is going to expect to open an app and call a moving van. It will just be hard for these companies to be that one bird that becomes a billion-dollar company when a similar bird has already emerged from the flock.</li><li><strong>Startups are looking outside Silicon Valley - way outside.</strong> Life in San Francisco can be pretty easy. Food and cars can arrive on doorsteps with a few clicks on an Apple watch. Startups, though, are finally turning their eyes to other markets and taking Silicon Valley solutions outside of the U.S. Many followed the "X for Y" model, like a "Venmo for southeast Asia," but all of the startups had different solutions for their markets. <a href="https://chaldal.com/">Chaldal</a>, the "Amazon Fresh in Bangladesh," is building micro-warehouses throughout the dense city of Dhaka to deliver groceries. Others, like <a href="https://www.redcarpetup.com/">Red Carpet</a>, are taking India's local market system and upgrading it so customers could shop online thanks to installing a point of sale system.</li><li><strong>Startups are going niche, both in their product and their market. </strong>A particular industry may be saturated, but new startups are still finding a way to try to carve out a slice. This means making their initial market smaller, but cannibalizing an untapped one (like a food delivery service on college campuses delivered by college students who know it) or focusing on one product like coffee instead of delivering all kinds of food. The hard part with a smaller niche startup will be making the kinds of returns investors expect to see, but Facebook is the example of how niche can be a good thing. Social is dead: What 146 startup pitches showed me about the next wave of tech companies

<p><div class="image-container float_right"><div class="image"><p class="source on-image">REUTERS</p></div></div>The year 2020 will be a seminal one for Japan, with the country's capital home to the 31st Summer Olympiad and adult diapers <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/japan/10180069/Adult-diapers-to-outsell-baby-nappies-by-end-of-decade-in-Japan.html">set to outsell its baby contemporaries</a>.</p>
<p>The world is getting older, developed countries especially. Even in emerging markets like Brazil, the total fertility rate has dropped from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/deutsche-population-will-peak-in-2055-2013-9">6.2 live births per women to 1.8</a>, below the so-called "replacement rate."</p>
<p>Deutsche Bank global strategist Sanjeev Sanyal recently forecasted that world <keyword id="48933" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="population">population</keyword> <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/deutsche-population-will-peak-in-2055-2013-9">will peak around the year 2055</a> at 8.7 billion before declining to 8 billion by 2100.</p>
<p>Now, thanks to coder <a href="http://multitasked.net/about.html">Martin De Wulf</a> and UN data, we can really visualize these startling changes. De Wulf arranged population figures to make a set of familiar aging visualizations called <a href="http://populationpyramid.net/">population pyramids</a>.</p>
