Nearly six years after the brutal Nirbhaya gangrape that shook the nation and made unflattering headlines across the world, Indian women continue to be vulnerable on the streets and on trains. In a report by IndiaSpend in 2017, India recorded a sharp 36 percent spike in crimes against women passengers reported on Indian trains, according to <a href="http://164.100.158.235/question/annex/243/Au1584.docx" target="_blank">data </a>submitted by the railway ministry to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Parliament. It seems that the Indian Railways' Northeastern division has decided to counter the rising spate of brutalities and make its trains safer for women by installing panic buttons in coaches. The North Eastern Railways (NER) also plans to deploy women police personnel on suburban trains travelling during the night and to recruit women in the Railway Police Force (RPF), according to Sanjay Yadav, the chief press officer of the NER. The proposed panic buttons will accessible throughout the coach and will be directly connected to the guards' compartment. “These buttons, placed at convenient spots for the easy reach of women travelers above the electric switches, when pressed will denote the coach where there is emergency and the railway staff present in the train will be informed to promptly attend to the emergency,” Yadav said. At present, the only options women have is a stop-chain in coaches or a helpline number, via call or message, when faced with uncomfortable situations during their journey. Yadav also said that some other measures – colour-coding the coaches marked for women, installation of CCTV cameras with live feed to the authorities, and installation of wire mesh on windows – were also proposed and that the work on these proposals is “going on”. The panic button in coaches, however, may become a reality this year itself, Yadav said.

The Indian Railways is going to install panic buttons in trains for women safety

Few months back, there was an incident in Delhi, where a female passenger was harassed by a cab driver throughout her ride in central and south Delhi and it took four SOS calls from her before help reached her. It wasn’t about lack of intent that led to the delay but inability to get her exact location and bring it to attention of the cops. 
 
Thankfully, in this case, the girl was finally rescued and the cab driver and owner were, according to the news reports, charged under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 506 (criminal intimidation), 354 (assault of woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 342 (wrongful confinement) and Sections 323 and 324 (causing hurt by dangerous means). 
 The reality is that majority of the citizens; women in particular, feel unsafe using public transport in Delhi. With changing mindsets, and a push for citizens to adopt means such as <keyword id="6524998" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cab-aggregators">cab aggregators</keyword>, ride sharing, and car-pooling for their commutes, the need for personal safety measures for women get amplified. 
 
Poor personal safety for women in public areas is a problem. A recent <a href="http://in.breakthrough.tv/askingforit" target="_blank">survey</a> by Breakthrough, a global human rights organization, revealed that sexual harassment in public spaces was an everyday occurrence for more than 90% of women and girls. 
 
According to a 2013 UN study, 99 percent of women in countries such as Egypt say they’ve been harassed, and much of this physical and verbal harassment happens on public transport. 
 
While efficiency and convenience have been well factored into ride sharing and car-pooling efforts, the efforts by car aggregators on security concerns of sharing ride with strangers have still not been addressed comprehensively and firmly. 
 
Steps towards a reliable safety and security system 
 
From our experience, the need of the hour is a prompt, reliable and fool-proof safety and security assistance, which is beyond simply raising an alarm. 
Providing this service is not rocket science but it requires connectivity, a strong tech-backed, trustworthy and capable service. 
 
While it may be true that nearly of the half the crimes are solved by police authorities in NCR and the criminals are brought to books, it may be in some cases the crime could have been averted, if the affected party had access to prompt action and someone who could help. 
 
There are private enterprises that have risen on occasions and are attempting to fill the gap. 
 
Thanks to smartphones, there are a lot of apps that act as an alerting mechanism to family members when one’s security and safety is under threat. 
 
These are great communication mechanisms but in times of panic, the best of us may lose judgment of what may be the right thing to do. At such a time, we need the assistance of someone trained, who is well versed in handling a broad range of threatening situations, from fire-fighting to providing CPR to dispersing mobs to being well versed in combat situations, or as the situation demands. Loved ones though alerted may be ill-equipped to handle these situations. 
 
We go through crisis on a daily basis and if a personal safety and immediate assistance service can make a difference to even one life, it would inevitably create goodwill and help in change the perspective on personal safety and security. 
 
Start with the basics. There should be an ease of reach through an app or a helpline, an embedded GPS that would help determine the victim’s location (again something that was amiss in the incident cited above). 
 
A command and control center, which is able to guide callers until live help in the form of a trained responders team reaches, can also be of great help. It is also important to partner them with government authorities, police, hospitals that are able to help in such situations. Julie said she has painstakingly reviewed the relevant policies and laws to ensure she is complying.Despite taking the precautions, Julie said she still feels pressure to accept more rides than she's comfortable with to retain her Uber <a target="_blank" href="https://www.uber.com/us/en/drive/uber-pro/">gold status</a>, which provides her access to certain perks, like lower gas expenses. To retain one's status, a driver needs to complete rides at a certain frequency.She said she also worries that a false customer complaint could get her <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tips-for-avoiding-deactivation-or-firing-uber-doordash-lyft-2023-11">kicked off the Uber platform</a>."Drivers are left defenseless, worn out, and scared to even follow the law because we are constantly threatened with being deactivated," she said.<h2>Checking a customer's profile and declining rides can reduce risks</h2>Since she began driving roughly five years ago, Sara, a full-time Uber and Lyft driver in Chicago, said driving for both platforms has sometimes made her feel unsafe or uncomfortable. The 64-year-old, who asked to use a pseudonym and spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of professional repercussions, said these incidents have typically involved intoxicated customers.On one occasion, she said a group of riders began making fun of her accent, an incident she said was humiliating and that she reported. In another instance, she said a customer asked her if she wanted to have sex — she said they backed off when she firmly declined.When asked about Lyft's safety resources, a company spokesperson said that Lyft has an around-the-clock safety response team and works with leading national organizations to inform its safety policies. In September, Lyft launched a "women connect" <a target="_blank" href="https://www.lyft.com/women+">feature</a> in 55 US cities that increases women drivers' odds of being matched with women riders."Safety is fundamental to Lyft," the spokesperson said. "Since day one, we have worked to design policies and features that protect both drivers and riders."In response to her safety concerns, Sara said she doesn't drive at night, tries to stay close to home, and avoids speaking with customers about politics or other controversial topics.Additionally, she said she always checks the customer's rating and pickup area. If she has a bad feeling about a ride, she cancels it. She recalled one past ride that came up on her Lyft app: a two-hour trip to Indiana for a passenger who had zero rides, no rating, and no picture."When someone uses a nickname like 'My King,' or an initial like 'J' with no picture, it is a red flag for me," she said. "The risk surpasses the compensation for the ride, and I will not take it."<h2>Avoiding certain conversations can reduce the chances of conflict</h2>Over the years, Yvonne, a part-time Uber and Lyft driver in Tampa, Florida, said she's had very few trips that made her feel unsafe over her roughly seven years as a driver. But one particularly negative incident stands out.Yvonne, who asked that her last name not be included for fear of professional repercussions, said a drunk customer propositioned her for sex and began hugging her until she was able to stop them. She said she probably should have reported this incident to the police but didn't.Yvonne said the best way to reduce safety concerns is to know when to talk — and when not to."When you have one of those passengers, sometimes it is saying nothing at all," she said. "For others, it is basically agreeing with them, even if you don't agree, or apologizing that they are having a bad day. Safe solo travel: 72% women demanded <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=women+safety">safety measures</a> while going alone. Women travelling alone in India have increased with a share of 29% of holidays planned as compared to 18% the previous year. 
 
Better Access to Remote Destinations: Travelling women seek rare experiences and 61% feel the necessity for better accessibility to remote destinations. While they are heading out on multiple weekend getaways throughout the year, exploring and discovering possibilities for adventure activity holidays around the city. 
 
Clean Buses and Trains - India direly needs a toilet revolution if it needs to bring in revenue from tourism. Of the 2.4 billion people in the world who have no toilets, India accounts for nearly 600m. It was noted that <keyword id="625381" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="women-travellers">women travellers</keyword> are increasingly turning away from train journeys as compared to last year due to the hygiene aspects. 55% of women travellers want clean buses and trains.

Wi-fi Hubs: Nowadays, travellers expect to be able to use their mobile devices to access travel-related information, to smooth their journey and enhance their experience while on the move. Top three uses for wi-fi is travel research, maps / navigation and access to social media. Today, 47% woman travellers demand for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=wifi">Wi-Fi</a> hubs as women turn to internet and apps more than people for holiday advice. 
 
Women Taxi Drivers: 45% women look for women taxi drivers as they find it safe and convenient and don’t even mind sharing the ride with a female. 
 
Safe Accommodation options: 61% women want better staying facilities in remote destinations. Hotels and resorts continue to be the popular choice as a holiday accommodation option accounting for over 60% of trips planned. However, in the last 18-24 months there is an interest in alternate accommodation options such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=homestay">homestays</a>, experiential resorts, camps, serviced, apartments, jungle lodges and the like. Lyft is requiring safety education courses for its drivers after a spate of sexual assaults

<ul class="summary-list"><li>20 women filed a lawsuit against <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/lyft">Lyft</a> on Wednesday, accusing the company of not doing more to prevent attacks by drivers. </li><li>The plaintiffs say they were attacked during Lyft rides in the time since a similar group filed a lawsuit in September. </li><li>A Lyft representative said what the women describe shouldn't happen to anyone, and that the company is "continually investing in new features and policies to protect our riders and drivers."</li></ul>Twenty victims of rape and sexual assault filed a lawsuit against Lyft on Wednesday, accusing the ride-hailing firm of not doing enough to prevent attacks on riders by drivers.It's the latest in a string of allegations from victims, mostly women and now numbering more than three dozen, against the company. In a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lyft-lawsuit-claims-sexual-predator-crisis-among-drivers-on-app-2019-9">September lawsuit represented by the same lawyer,</a> 14 women accused Lyft of abetting a "sexual predator crisis" on its platform by not taking simple steps that could have prevented many attacks. That case is <a href="https://webapps.sftc.org/ci/CaseInfo.dll?CaseNum=CGC19578975&amp;SessionID=9EA3EAB6A3965029617323EDE99C40633E853646">ongoing</a>.In both instances, victims allege that Lyft knowingly "continued to let sexual predators drive and interact with vulnerable members of the public." Wednesday's complaint also claims the sexual assaults in the new lawsuit have occurred since that first complaint was filed."During the last three months, Lyft had ample opportunity to make changes to ensure the safety of female passengers," Mike Bomberger, the victims' attorney, said in a press release. "But instead of protecting, women, the company chose to invest in a costly public relations campaign with no regard to safety."In one instance, an anonymous victim claims she was raped by a driver in Los Angeles. When her ride arrived at her home, the complaint says, the passengers' husband realized his wife was slumped in the backseat and saw a man leave the backseat. The driver was later arrested, the lawsuit says."There is a corporate culture at Lyft that refuses to fix a known sexual-assault problem. This sends a message to drivers that there is no accountability for sexual assaults," Bomberger said.The law firm, Estey &amp; Bomberger, says its now representing more than 100 sexual-assault victims with claims against Uber and Lyft.A Lyft representative responded with the following statement: Safety has been the focus of many Lyft product announcements since the company's underwhelming initial public offering earlier this year.
