<ul class="summary-list"><li>Congress is debating reforms to the military draft system.</li><li>A Senate proposal — if it became law — would force some women to register for the draft. </li></ul>The US military is having a harder time getting Americans to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-military-recruitment-shortage-target-immigrants-migrants-citizenship-army-navy-2023-6">join the armed forces</a>, so Congress is weighing some options — including making women eligible for the draft.On June 14, the House of Representatives <a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2024/06/14/ndaa-house-republicans-defense-bill/">passed</a> an annual defense policy bill that contained a bipartisan proposal to expand the maximum age of the draft — which the US last used in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sss.gov/history-and-records/vietnam-lotteries/#:~:text=The%20last%20draft%20call%20was,suspended%20on%20January%2027%2C%201976.">1973</a> to bring men into the armed forces during the Vietnam War era — from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.spokesman.com/stories/2024/jun/19/amid-military-recruitment-challenges-congress-deba/">25 to 26</a>. Currently, most US men between the ages of 18 and 25 are required to register with the Selective Service.The same day, the Senate approved a bill that — if it became law— would force women to register for the draft.The House and Senate proposals have little chance of becoming law, in part because some Republicans aren't on board, The New York Times <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/19/us/politics/military-draft-women.html">reported</a>. But as the US military continues to face <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-milley-wokeness-perception-military-recruitment-challenges-2023-8">recruitment challenges</a> — and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-economy-surging-problems-elsewhere-risks-american-companies-apple-tesla-2023-10">geopolitical risks</a> persist across the globe — Congress could continue to weigh reforms to the US draft system, in addition to other changes that could boost the number of active service members.In 2023, the US military collectively fell short of its recruiting goals by roughly <a target="_blank" href="https://www.defense.gov/News/News-Stories/Article/Article/3616786/dod-addresses-recruiting-shortfall-challenges/">41,000</a> recruits. A Pew Research poll conducted in January found that 43% of US adults between the ages of 18 and 29 had a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/poll-data-young-americans-tend-to-view-the-military-negatively-2024-2">positive view</a> of the US military.The congressional debate about whether women should be included in the draft dates back to at least <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/24/us/women-military-draft-selective-service.html">2020</a>, when a group of military experts recommended that Congress enact this measure. The debate comes as the US military has taken some steps over the past decade to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.brookings.edu/articles/women-warriors-the-ongoing-story-of-integrating-and-diversifying-the-armed-forces/">improve equality</a> in the armed forces. As of 2016, women have been able to hold <a target="_blank" href="https://www.army.mil/article/268484/tradocs_contributions_to_the_opening_of_all_army_military_occupation_specialties_to_women#:~:text=With%20the%20full%20integration%20of,full%20potential%2C%20regardless%20of%20gender.">every military position</a>.Not everyone in Congress is on board with the proposal to include women in the draft."We need to get reality back in check here," Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley, a Republican, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/19/us/politics/military-draft-women.html">said</a> on Fox News. "There shouldn't be women in the draft. They shouldn't be forced to serve if they don't want to."

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The Soula app has an AI chatbot, Dua, that aids mothers with postpartum depression support.</li><li>AI chatbots like Dua aim to reduce healthcare burdens and improve mental health access.</li></ul>Caring for a month-old newborn and two-year-old son felt overwhelming for LeRonika Francis.During her first postpartum period, Francis said she experienced a heavy wave of depression while dealing with a baby with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/parenting/why-is-my-newborn-crying">colic</a>. She ultimately sought the help of a counselor. It was not until her most recent pregnancy that she also started to use an AI chatbot on the fem-tech app Soula, which she said helped with reducing depressive symptoms and reassuring her about her mental health."It tells me: 'Welcome back, LeRonika. Your reactions are natural,'" said Francis, who is based in New Iberia, Louisiana.The AI chatbot called "Dua" also sent her some videos that she could watch about self-hugging, a practice that could reduce stress levels."I feel like Dua is there more than anything. It really showed me: OK, this is what you could do. Make sure you make time for yourself, too, because that's important as well," said Francis.Soula was co-founded by Natallia Miranchuk and Andrei Kulik, who conceptualized a 24/7 AI doula that could close the gap in mental health support for mothers during pregnancy and postpartum periods. Rather than replacing medical providers, apps such as Soula aim to increase broader access to maternal healthcare. Healthcare providers said that these apps could also help reduce the burden on the healthcare system, where wait times can be long and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-york-nurses-strike-labor-union-staffing-shortage-covid-2023-1">workers face burnout</a>.Business Insider spoke with OB/GYN doctors and doulas, who largely welcomed the rise in AI chatbots because they can make information more accessible to patients.According to data obtained from Sensor Tower, Soula now has more than 35,000 downloads. The startup has fundraised over $750,000 and is backed by investors such as Andrey Mikhaylyuk, the former vice president of product at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/unicorn-pitch-deck-flo-health-raises-200-million-series-c-2024-7">Flo Health</a>, a period tracking app.Miranchuk told BI that her experiences as a single mother of two and her work as a former maternity photographer inspired her to develop a supportive app for women. Initially conceptualized as a hub to connect doulas worldwide to those in need, the generative AI boom shifted the startup's focus to integrating a chatbot that could serve more populations."Women are shy to ask questions, even in the community, because they have the feeling that maybe 'as a mom, I should have known that, but I don't.' And she doesn't know where to go," Miranchuk said.The ease of customizing ChatGPT has spurred a wave of new AI-based chatbots like Soula. According to Sensor Tower, the companion apps <a target="_blank" href="http://Character.ai">Character.ai</a>, Talkie, and Paradot have more than 73 million collective downloads, soaring more than 130% between 2023 and 2024. AI therapy apps such as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wysa-mental-health-startup-raises-fresh-vc-funding-expand-coverage-2021-5">Wysa</a> and Woebot received over 1 million downloads, the data said.Corenia Smith, director of the Birth Justice Collaborative in Minnesota, said that while popularizing tools like chatbots can help broaden healthcare access, it is important to avoid a "one size fits all" and ensure that AI can reflect the communities it serves."There are cultural practices that exist and have existed for thousands of years that people still use," Smith said. "A human could talk about all their experience and what they've seen and give referrals. When you reach that limitation with an AI, it has to have the ability to hand over care or make a referral in a way where people don't feel dropped."<h2 id="245c9b56-b4a4-4a1a-abbc-5f6bbf950f49">The role of a doula</h2>The AI chatbot Dua aims to function like a doula, providing mothers with information about the pregnancy experience during a time of transition.Doulas are trained professionals who can provide non-medical, continuous physical, emotional, and information support for women before, during, and after childbirth, helping to <a target="_blank" href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10292163/">reduce</a> mental health-related morbidity for the mother and reduce infant mortality rates.Access to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/reproductive-health/what-is-a-doula">doulas</a> can be costly. While there's Medicaid coverage for doulas in several states, not all private health insurance plans cover these expenses. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0266613821003120">Long wait times and socioeconomic inequality</a> also contribute to increased levels of stress and lack of healthcare usage among mothers and pregnant people."Traditionally, it's been something that's been available only to folks with a lot of money and a lot of resources. The people that benefit the most from doula care are those that might not trust the healthcare system," said Dr. Devon Rupley, an attending physician and OB/GYN specialist at NYC Health. "That tends to be people of color who've had previously negative experiences with racism and bias that can really harm their experience in the healthcare system generally."Rupley added that using an AI healthcare app to address basic questions can allow patients to spend higher-quality time with doctors by asking high-level questions and discussing their healthcare issues.<div type="image" title="Dua, an AI chatbot, talks to the user with texts." height="3000" width="4000" msid="114502558" hostid="261" sizebytes="72158"></div><h2 id="7b015d0f-002f-4d99-8f8d-2ae73851d6bc">How to design an empathetic AI chatbot</h2>Soula enlisted real-life doulas to help train its chatbot and strike the right tone."We can't create it to be as personable as talking to a real-life person, but we can try to create that as much as possible," said Lexi Pacheco, a doula from Arizona who worked to help refine the dialogue in Soula's chatbot Dua. For $22 per hour, she helped improve the chatbot by using it "hand-in-hand" during her pregnancies, adding in her expertise.While asking questions on Google could yield more informational responses, Pacheco said mothers would want something that provided "more of that reassurance that Google wouldn't."For Armani Grant, a Soula user who became pregnant at 18, Google felt overwhelming. The chatbot allowed her to ask questions that she wouldn't feel comfortable asking her mother. Pacheco said many women she's worked with reported similar experiences."They might even feel incompetent to ask the question, which no woman should ever feel, but with my history of working with people, they definitely tend to revert to: I'm sorry, I'm asking this question for some reason, and that might just be because of the societal pressure that more medicalized doctors have put on people that they don't give the time and day to us," Pacheco said.The app isn't meant to completely replace a doula. Moreover, retention rates of AI healthcare chatbots can be low, said Johannes Eichstaedt, a computational social scientist and assistant professor of psychology at Stanford University. The high dropout rates for healthcare apps are "an elephant in the room," he said.At the same time, Pacheco said AI bots can help "calm nerves" and fill the gaps when patients feel they are "bothering" their healthcare providers."AI isn't like a healthcare provider to give you guidance, but it's supposed to be there to give you a little bit more comfort," Pacheco said.

The AI app Soula seeks to improve healthcare access for pregnant women

After a full day of meetings at Julie, a startup that sells a morning-after pill, CEO Amanda E/J Morrison jumped a flight from New York to Boston and headed to a small, private college, where a trivia night awaited her. Dozens of students shuffled into a classroom with plates of chicken tenders, Texas toast, and bright blue boxes of the emergency contraceptive.Morrison had worked with the Planned Parenthood Generation Action club at Suffolk University to sponsor the event, part of Julie's efforts to win a new generation of consumers. However, she had another, more pressing reason for being there. Julie is doing more campus events to clear up some of the confusion about emergency contraception — namely, that it isn't medication abortion.Standing at the head of the classroom, Morrison read off a projector screen, "Emergency contraceptives like Julie are legal in how many states? 25, 48, 50, 37." Students tapped their answers into a quiz app. "It's 37," Lily, a spirited sophomore, whispered to her teammates.In a minute, the correct answer appeared on screen, and the quiet chatter rose to a clamor. Half the teams said 37 states."Fifty states, guys. It's everywhere," Morrison said.When asked why she said 37, Lily said, "Just the way things are going."In states that outlaw abortion, some patients and politicians worry that contraception could be in legal jeopardy, too. There's no federal law preserving access to birth control, rather, a patchwork of state laws and court decisions holding it in place. Another Trump term <a target="_blank" href="https://www.politico.com/news/2024/05/29/trump-birth-control-contraception-00159555">could change that</a>.For Julie, "that's the million dollar question of this election," Morrison said.<div type="image" title="TK" height="2000" width="2667" msid="114460252" hostid="261" sizebytes="193282"></div>"We're not worried about some big ban happening in the first hundred days. But how those decisions trickle down — what is presented in Congress as a bill, how the Supreme Court reacts, what trickles down to the states — becomes a real secondary concern," she said.Founders of women's health startups feel doubly invested in this election, one of the closest presidential races of the century. Half a dozen founders and investors of women's health companies, all women, told Business Insider that if Vice President Kamala Harris wins, it's business as usual. They said another Trump victory creates uncertainty for reproductive health startups, from period trackers to online abortion clinics to embryo banks.<div type="image" title="TK" height="1610" width="2147" msid="114460254" hostid="261" sizebytes="109206"></div>While Harris's presidential campaign has been marked by unrelenting support for reproductive healthcare, including contraception and abortions, Trump's position has been a moving target.The former president suggested <a target="_blank" href="https://www.politico.com/news/2024/05/29/trump-birth-control-contraception-00159555">in May</a> that he was "looking at" restrictions on birth control, then walked that position back in a social media post later that day. During the September presidential debate, he called himself a "leader" on IVF, a move that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.politico.com/news/2024/09/12/trump-ivf-gop-roe-abortion-00178760">angered</a> parts of his base that have sought to restrict fertility treatments. He said <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/donald-trump-says-he-would-veto-federal-abortion-ban/">in October</a> that he'd veto a national abortion ban after deflecting the question for months but would support states ordaining their own abortion bans.Trump's waffling on reproductive rights has put founders of women's health startups on notice. "It is one of the major issues that we're discussing and that our CEOs are focused on — how to continue to provide care to women, especially women of childbearing age," said Trish Costello, founder of Portfolia, an investing platform that pools money from female accredited investors.The day after the presidential debate, Mika Eddy was vibrating with the weight of the election. The race's outcome could drastically change reproductive rights, foreign policy, gun safety, and climate law — all issues close to Eddy, a 35-year-old Californian and mother of two.But Eddy also has skin in the game as the chief executive officer of Malama Health, a startup helping women with gestational diabetes access better care. Its doula network assists patients on Medicaid with applying for benefits such as diabetes-friendly meals and medical transport.Eddy worries that if Trump wins, he would restrict access to the coverage and benefits that her users rely on, weakening one of Malama Health's key services."There is this common misperception that, 'we're in California, we're in a liberal state, and so we're safe.' And I don't think that's the case," Eddy said.For some founders of women's health startups, this election is more than a political contest; it has ramifications for their livelihoods. A year after the Supreme Court overruled Roe v. Wade, ending the constitutional right to abortion, Hey Jane started selling birth control and treatments for urinary tract infections, yeast infections, and herpes, both oral and genital. The new products cushion the business against a "plan E" scenario of a national abortion ban, said Carli Sapir, a Hey Jane investor and founding partner of Amboy Ventures."We're thinking about how to make sure those other verticals are in a good place to continue carrying the company forward," said Sapir.This time last year, one of Hey Jane's rivals, Choix, shut down <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vcs-backing-online-abortion-sites-say-its-good-business-2021-9">after three years in service</a>. The company said in a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/choix-closes-virtual-doors-launches-130300919.html">press release</a> that "the stigma and politics surrounding abortion care posed significant fundraising challenges." It raised a $1 million seed round in 2022.While direct providers of abortion, like Hey Jane, could see major restrictions or shutdowns to their core businesses if Trump returns to the White House, a wider range of companies expect to feel the ripple effects. Startups that seem removed from the front lines, such as those involved with period tracking and fertility treatments, are also preparing for potential challenges.<div type="image" title="Then-President Donald Trump addresses the anti-abortion &quot;March for Life&quot;" height="750" width="1000" msid="114460247" hostid="261" sizebytes="53678"></div>If a national abortion ban were to occur, apps like Flo Health or Clue might face increased scrutiny, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-lux-capital-deena-shakir-wrote-childrens-book-2024-9">Deena Shakir</a>, a general partner at Lux Capital. These apps track when women have their periods and when they miss them. In today's post-Roe America, privacy experts worry that such data could be used to suggest that someone has had or is thinking about having an abortion, potentially putting women at risk of prosecution in certain states.The stakes could be equally high for companies involved with fertility treatments.The demand for services like in vitro fertilization, or IVF, and surrogacy has been climbing for years as people have kids later in life and infertility rates increase. That's birthed a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fertility-startups-booming-despite-market-downturn-2023-6">global fertility market</a> that includes companies that operate clinics to provide services like egg freezing and IVF, companies that run labs and tests, and firms that help people pay for the procedures.However, the industry's future is uncertain following attacks on abortion access. The end of Roe v. Wade opened up the legal terrain for states to interfere with access to other reproductive care, said Lauren Berson Sugarman, founder and chief executive officer of Conceive, a startup that offers personalized fertility guidance, including text support from nurses and peer groups.In Alabama, the state Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos should be considered children. That put patients and fertility clinics on edge that they could be criminally charged for destroying extra embryos. A handful of Alabama clinics paused IVF treatments while patients throughout the South began moving their embryos to jurisdictions with more stable legal protections."We see a lot of patients come to us and say, should I move my embryos out of a red state? Because what happens if they come after IVF?" said Berson Sugarman.The push for "embryo rights" could have wide-reaching repercussions for startups like Maven Clinic or Carrot Fertility, which offer fertility benefits for employers, and TMRW Life Sciences, a biotech company creating robots for the safe storage of frozen sperm, eggs, and embryos.Moreover, it could influence the type of research that startups conduct and where. Alice Zheng, a principal at women's health investor RH Capital, explains how the shifting legal landscape might affect companies like Vitra Labs. As a biotech startup working on developing eggs from stem cells for IVF, "they're doing really cutting-edge research for fertility, but they need to think very carefully about where they set up shop," Zheng said. "Some of their research might involve certain types of tissue, which is more closely scrutinized in some areas than others."<div type="image" title="TK" height="2000" width="2667" msid="114460250" hostid="261" sizebytes="243576"></div>Two years ago, in the hours after the Supreme Court ended the constitutional right to an abortion, Morrison's phone started ringing and didn't stop. Investors wanted to know if the ruling would kill Julie's launch in Walmart stores that fall. Job candidates wondered if the company would still exist in six months. Morrison's mom called, concerned for her daughter's future."For probably two weeks straight, I was just doing reassurance calls," Morrison said.While emergency contraception is not the abortion bill and is currently legal in all 50 states, it is continuously confused with the abortion pill, which can have damaging consequences. In June, the medical journal JAMA Network Open published a <a target="_blank" href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2820370?%20utm_source=For_The_Media">study</a> that found retail pharmacy fills of Plan B, a leading morning-after pill brand, fell by 65% in states with near-total abortion bans the year after the Dobbs decision, partly due to clinic closures and confusion about its legal status.That confusion could threaten Julie's sales, and puts the onus of the company to better educate consumers. It sponsors events like trivia nights and sorority house brunches. It has enlisted TikTok influencers to share videos of their drugstore hauls showing how easy it is to buy Julie. In one video, a young woman going back-to-school shopping walks off with a two-count pack of the emergency contraceptive pill. The caption reads, "double majors, not double strollers."Other startups are urging consumers to fight for reproductive rights at the polls. Eddy's Malama Health has reminders to register to vote in its app and will tell users where their nearest polling station is closer to election day. The company asks for their ZIP codes during onboarding, Eddy explained."When you have a baby, you're like, 'I want to vote, but I don't know where to go,'" Eddy said. She hopes the emails will get more pregnant women and new moms to head to the polls. Eddy added that the emails won't support a candidate and are meant as a "nonpartisan resource."<div type="image" title="TK" height="2000" width="2667" msid="114460255" hostid="261" sizebytes="192114"></div>Julie's content isn't political, either. It's not trying to change any minds about abortion rights. The goal is simply to spread awareness among young adults that emergency contraception helps prevent pregnancy, not end it. This way, Morrison said, a woman who is anti-abortion and has unprotected sex can feel confident taking Julie knowing that she isn't compromising her abortion stance.It was past 9 o'clock on a weekday, and the competition at trivia night was heating up. Students in teams of two or three screamed with delight as they watched their names climb the leaderboard. They competed to win prizes like sex toys and T-shirts with the phrase, "A Better Morning After.""Morning-after pills end pregnancy. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Gen Z women are leaning into the "office siren" aesthetic, a sexified business-professional look.</li><li>They're taking it beyond the office: Work-inspired clothing has made it into <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pictures-of-vintage-street-style-evolution-2019-3">street fashion</a>.</li></ul>At first, Julia Quang posted her <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/style/where-to-shop-for-womens-workwear-clothes">workwear outfits</a> because she had nothing else to share.As a fashion influencer, 23-year-old Quang had built her audience by posting outfit-of-the-day videos on TikTok, usually modeling casual womenswear trends.But when she landed a sales job and began spending most of her days in the office, she found herself with no time to post her typical fashion content.So, she started posting the outfits she was already wearing to work.To her surprise, her workwear outfits took off. Two of her videos, both featuring a variation of a form-fitting button-down top and low-rise trousers, garnered more than 1 million views each. Her following ballooned from 15,000 to 100,000 followers, and brand deals began pouring in.After five months in her corporate job, she was making more money as a part-time influencer than she was as a full-time sales rep. She quit her job to do influencing full time and now makes about 1.5 times her old salary.Quang attributes the unexpected virality to a digital trend that first appeared at the end of 2023: the office siren.Online interest in the style skyrocketed this summer. Videos on TikTok tagged #officesiren collectively have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/search?lang=en&amp;q=office%20siren&amp;t=1723230696948">tens of millions</a> of views. Google Trends shows searches for the term "office siren" increased tenfold between the first week of May and the first week of August. Brands are catching on, too. Canadian retailer Aritzia launched its fall 2024 workwear-inspired collection with the tagline, "CCing office sirens."The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-tiktok-office-siren-trend-rooted-in-sexism-expert-2024-8">office siren</a> is a polarizing character — a sexed-up appropriation of office wear, restyled and applied to contexts outside the office.Think vests that you'd see in a three-piece suit but cropped and fitted and worn without a shirt underneath or pinstripes splashed across micro-mini skirts and tube tops.Quang's influence demonstrates a curious trend among working Gen Zers in America.Many of these young people began careers during the remote work boom of the pandemic years and continue to work in hybrid or remote settings. During this time, dress codes in many corporate spaces got more relaxed, welcoming <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeans-face-reckoning-pandemic-bankruptcies-habit-shifts-2020-8">jeans</a>, T-shirts, and in some cases, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fashion-brands-still-adapting-work-wardrobes-remote-hybrid-era-2022-12">athleisure</a>.Although more workplaces have embraced casual dress codes in recent years, young people are embracing corporate fashion in places that aren't meant for this kind of clothing at all.BI spoke with three industry experts who explained why office-inspired clothing is booming, even amid less crowded offices and more relaxed at-work dress codes.They pointed to a few key factors driving young people's embrace of corporate fashion: the prevalence of remote work, the demise of the dress code, and the ultimate blurring of our professional and personal lives.<h2 id="82c4edce-25aa-4792-aa00-1a573c2ef300">Reclaiming adulthood</h2>Quang, who quit her corporate job in April, continues to post office-siren content, although she no longer has to get dressed to go into work. She described her new aesthetic as the "office siren, without the dress code" — a pastiche of corporate culture that doesn't exist in real life.Josephine Hansom, a youth-trends analyst at the market research firm Savanta, said that young people could be embracing corporate core as a way of asserting their maturity."Young people are trying to reclaim their pathway to adulthood, which isn't necessarily being offered to them," Hansom said. "This generation is finding it quite hard to know where they fit because the life milestones associated with becoming an adult are so far off."Gen Z faces significant financial hurdles, like unprecedented <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/renting-vs-buying-homeownership-wont-make-genz-rich-increase-wealth-2024-7">housing unaffordability</a> and mounting student debt, factors that push many of them to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-living-at-home-relying-on-parents-safety-net-2024-7">live with their parents</a> for longer.And given that members of Gen Z are more likely than older generations to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/young-people-are-developing-money-dysmorphia-2024-7">perceive</a> themselves as financially worse off than they are, it's no surprise they may want to assert what little claims to adulthood they may have using clothes.<div type="image" title="Woman at a desk wearing heels and skirt" height="1414" width="2120" msid="112743255" hostid="261" sizebytes="84882"></div><h2 id="67cccec9-eb44-4703-9056-f9736196621c">Dress codes' demise</h2>Kirsten Classi-Zummo, an apparel industry analyst at Circana, said the end of the coronavirus pandemic accelerated the blurring of dress codes.Events came back in full force. Suddenly inundated with places to be and people to see, plus the demands of some return-to-office orders, young people sought out clothing that could easily transition between contexts.Classi-Zummo said she's noticed young shoppers buying a lot of suits, skirts, and blazers. These pieces have a specific versatility: They can be worn to the office, out to dinner, and elsewhere.She said the fluidity of the same clothes to move through different social spaces is a recent development."Ten, 15 years ago, we had completely separate wardrobes. For work, for working out, for going out, you bought separate pieces," Classi-Zummo said. "Now … everything has kind of met in the middle."Corey Robinson, the chief product officer of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/visited-abercrombie-and-fitch-first-time-in-years-menswear-review-2024-8">Abercrombie &amp; Fitch</a>, cited the versatility of tailored pieces as a main factor in their popularity."<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-you-should-tailor-clothes-2014-6">Tailored clothing</a> is not only great for the uptick in demand for wear-to-work, it's also a trend that is versatile for work to happy hour to weekend," Robinson said.That versatility isn't done by accident. Aritzia, a retailer Quang described as her go-to for office-inspired clothing, intentionally blurs the line between casual and professional clothing, according to its executive VP of product Heather McLean."We often blend elevated professional pieces with more casual items, and this effortless, sophisticated approach resonates with our community across all ages," McLean said.<h2 id="bf51131f-5758-4f71-8927-720c6ab4f501">Playing the professional</h2>Work creeps into other spaces — the coffee shop, your home, even the beach <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quiet-vacations-work-trends-culture-pto-travel-job-stress-2024-6">when you're supposed to be on vacation</a>.Perhaps what we're observing with the trickling of office attire into other spaces is just a reflection of how increasingly blurred our personal and professional lives have become.To be sure, this isn't the first time we've seen business clothing make it out of the office and onto the street.In the 1970s, people embraced polos, collared shirts, and button-downs for day-to-day wear, leaning away from the baggy and boho chic of the previous decade, Nancy Deihl, a fashion historian at New York University, said.Hansom added that business-casual structured vests and ties even made their way into clubbing outfits of the 2000s — an era of fashion Quang said was a huge inspiration point for the corporate-siren trend.But the big difference between those earlier shifts and now is that Gen Z is online in almost every aspect of their lives: dating, socializing, and work.And with remote and hybrid work <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hybrid-work-here-to-stay-ceos-rto-remote-2024-4">here to stay</a>, Gen Z is left play-acting at adulthood, as its typical markers have slipped further out of reach.After all, Quang said, the ideal office siren isn't a real person — she's an idea. And the people commenting on her videos that she'd "get sent to HR" if she wore these outfits to work are missing the point."Obviously, I'm not wearing this to the office," Quang said. "The office siren is just a character I'm playing."

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Eva Longoria stepped in at the last minute with a $6 million investment that saved "John Wick."</li><li>Since then, she's invested in two soccer clubs, a tequila, and a food brand, and has her own production company.</li></ul>Ten years ago, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/eva-longoria-producer-john-wick-2024-10">Eva Longoria became the unlikely savior</a> of "John Wick."About a week before the movie was set for release in 2014, stuntmen-turned-directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch ran out of money when they lost almost $6 million in gap financing.Unbeknownst to them at the time, Longoria, who was then best known for playing Gabrielle on the hit series "Desperate Housewives," stepped in with the cash to complete the movie."CAA, which was putting the financing together, they offered the opportunity to some actors who had some bankroll," <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/john-wick-keanu-reeves-popularity-chad-stahelski-david-leitch-interview-2024-10">Leitch told Business Insider in an interview</a> alongside Stahelski celebrating the movie's 10th anniversary. "'You'll be first out of this waterfall, you'll get your money back then X amount.' Eva was like, 'Cool!'""She came to the rescue," Stahelski added.You know the rest. The movie, which stars Keanu Reeves as the title character, a former assassin who returns to the bloody trade to avenge the death of his dog, became a surprise box office hit, earning over $86 million worldwide and spawning a successful franchise.The movie revitalized Reeves' career, giving him his biggest hit since "The Matrix," and turned Stahelski and Leitch from stunt guys into viable action directors.The last-minute financing save also marked a turning point for Longoria, kick-starting her interest in becoming a major investor in Hollywood.Since then, Longoria has started the production company Hyphenate Media Group, which most recently produced the Apple TV+ series "Land of Women," in which Longoria also starred. She's also invested in two soccer teams, including Natalie Portman's Angel City FC, the most valuable team in women's sports history; the tequila company Casa Del Sol; and Siete Foods, which sold to PepsiCo in October for over $1 billion.Business Insider spoke to Longoria about what led to her investing in "John Wick" — the first time ever she's spoken on the topic publicly — and how she's become a successful investor in the years since.Chad and David told me they had lost $6 million in gap financing and that "John Wick" was literally going to be shut down in a day until you agreed to invest that money to save the movie. Is that accurate?That is accurate. By the way, I was in my infancy. I love David saying, "They went to people with bankroll." [Laughs.] My bankroll was very new, and it was a lot of money, and I was like, "So how does it work?" I had no idea. I would love to say I was an investment genius and I just knew and I calculated my risk. No, none of that. How did it all happen?An agent, and he wasn't even my agent, he called me and said, "You got money, you should put your money here." And I didn't even know how a movie was made. I was like, "What do you mean gap financing?"But something that I've learned, looking back, I love investing in people. You can tell me you're opening a chicken farm, but if you're fucking passionate about it and you've done the work and know the market, I mean, Chad and David did their work. They put in their 10,000 hours as stunt guys and second unit directors; they had seen all the bad movies and knew how to make a good one. It was that. They were undeniably passionate and I knew they were going to make an undeniable product. They have that hunger and scrappiness that I have. I'm very scrappy in my life. I'm like, "Why can't we just do this like this?"<div type="image" title="john wick " height="2756" width="4332" msid="114818649" hostid="261" sizebytes="196522"></div>In the 10 years since "John Wick" came out, have you thought about how significant your investment in this movie was, especially in the action genre?It changed the genre. Took Keanu in a whole new trajectory. I remember last year at one of the Oscar dinners, I'm sitting at my table and across from me is <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-fall-guy-david-leitch-kelly-mccormick-relationship-stunts-interview-2024-4">David Leitch with his wife</a>. And I didn't recognize him at first. He goes, "Hello," and I go, "Hi." And he goes, "It's David." And I'm like, "Hi?" And he was like, "You changed my life."Then I realized who it was. We hadn't spoken in 10 years. I never saw them again, and I didn't need to because I was getting the checks. [Laughs.] But it was such a serendipitous moment to sit with him and get the inside story of what happened. My husband was there and was like, "What did you do?" I was like, "John Wick."My husband is friends with the head of Lionsgate and he'll say to him sometimes, "I see we wrote a check to Eva this week." But the geniuses were Chad and David and the star that was Keanu. I just wrote the check. To this day, you still get checks from "John Wick"?Yes. What I'm pissed off about is I wasn't connected to the rest of them. This was a one-time thing. That was the gamble. But that was my only mistake, not being attached to all of the films. What have you made off that $6 million investment?You know, I would have to check. More than double, for sure. Have you run into Keanu since?I have! Again, that was recently, too. We ran into each other because of his <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/keanu-reeves-alexandra-grant-relationship-timeline-photos-2022-6">girlfriend, Alexandra</a>. We know her through some friends, and we met her and Keanu at an art event. Keanu said, "I'd love to take you to dinner; we should celebrate 10 years." So we toasted to "John Wick." What you've done since is very impressive. You've invested in two soccer clubs, a tequila, a food brand, and you own a production company. How did your ambition as an investor evolve after "John Wick"? I like to say, "Yes, I'm a genius." No, everything comes up in different ways. I get asked a lot to invest and the things I invest in have to have purpose, they have to have a point of view, they have to fix a market problem or improve upon a market problem. For instance, with the tequila, Casa Del Sol, I was blown away by the brand story in that our tequila is the number one spirit drank by women and we have a lot of women in key positions. Even our master distiller is a woman, which is rare in the tequila industry. So I wanted to support her. <div type="image" title="Angel City players celebrating on the soccer field" height="3517" width="5275" msid="114818654" hostid="261" sizebytes="1176010"></div>And with Angel City, Natalie Portman came to me and said she wanted to do an experiment to see if we can run a football team with a different business model where everyone benefits, especially the female soccer players. She wanted to change the business model for female soccer. So I was like, "Okay great!" I thought it was a donation. I thought I was helping a cause. So <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.theguardian.com/football/article/2024/sep/05/nwsls-angel-city-sold-for-record-breaking-250m-to-disney-ceo-bob-iger">when we sold</a>, I was like, "Oh, my god." That was 14 times what I put in. It was crazy. And the other soccer team, Club Necaxa, you're <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/club-necaxa-eva-longoria-fx-disney-1236064184/">shooting a docuseries</a> for that?Yeah. We're currently shooting season 1. Actually, more people in the United States watch Liga MX than the Premier League. So my partners in that, Al Tylis and Sam Porter, they came to me because they wanted an authentic Mexican connection and though I was already with Angel City I wanted to expand my sports portfolio and uplift Mexican soccer. It's one of the great leagues in the world. And this team is one of the oldest teams, like Wrexham. But we're in a bigger division. Speaking of Wrexham AFC, how are you and Club Necaxa connected with that club's owners, Ryan Reynolds and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rob-mcelhenney-always-sunny-philadelphia-wrexham-wife-learning-disability-2024-6">Rob McElhenney</a>? They invested in us and we invested in them, so that's how we're connected. Once you invest in a soccer team you realize very quickly you need more investment. [Laughs.] Will we see you on "Welcome to Wrexham"?Yeah. I shot some stuff for "Wrexham," in Wrexham. And Rob and Ryan are coming out to Aguascalientes [the home of Club Necaxa] next weekend. And Siete Foods recently was <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.pepsico.com/our-stories/press-release/pepsico-to-acquire-siete-foods-for-12-billion10012024">acquired by Pepsi for $1.2 billion. </a>That's another crazy investment. I had been a fan of the product and had used it since its infancy when it was in Ziploc bags, because they are from Texas like me. I love the Garza family and tried to invest many times early on. They are family owned; they did everything themselves.When I came in they were already a $400 million company, and it was time to take them to the next step to become a billion-dollar food brand and also one of the only Hispanic food brands to reach $1 billion. I just believed in the product and their mission. We came from the same culture and same values. So about a year ago, I invested in them and we just sold to Pepsi. <div type="image" title="Eva Longoria next to bottles of Casa Del Sol" height="2401" width="3600" msid="114818645" hostid="261" sizebytes="222612"></div>You really have a magic touch in investing. What is the secret to being successful at this?It's a lot of work. This is my day job. The amount of days I dedicate to going to distributors and shaking hands with retailers for my tequila is the majority of my year. Going to the restaurants and bartending at events to bring brand awareness. And the same thing with Siete. Doing the social media, going into the research kitchen, looking at the market and seeing what we want to represent in our culture in a mainstream market, is it the healthy choice? It's a lot of work. I'm not just writing checks. It's my sweat. Looking back, how significant was the "John Wick" investment in your investing career today? If it crashed and burned, would you still have been willing to invest again?That's a good question. I don't know if that would have put a bad taste in my mouth. I'm really lucky to have had amazing investors around me and I'm intensely curious. I always ask, "How does my money make money?" I've been obsessed with that. I want to be making money while I'm sleeping. So surrounding myself with people who can tell me what is risky and what isn't is good. "How much are you willing to lose?" is always a big question. [Laughs.] I'm like, "How much am I willing to lose?" Nothing! Zero. How much is acting a priority in your life now?I've been behind the camera for the last 12 years and I finally went back in front of the camera with a show for Apple ["Land of Women"]. I also did "Searching for Mexico" and "Searching for Spain" on CNN. But that's a bit of an extension of my food brand. I have a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/739587/my-mexican-kitchen-by-eva-longoria/">cook book coming out</a>. I really want to do stuff that I love with people that I love. That's the blueprint. Are you still on the grind of looking through scripts to find projects?Yes, but for my media company, Hyphenate Media. Producing and directing is still my core. That's the tentpole of the circus. That's what holds everything up. So I'm now reading scripts and developing shows for other people.I want to make 40-50 more Eva Longorias. I don't want to star in everything, I want to build up the next generation of actors and writers and producers from the Latino community and also women. So that's, again, that purpose-driven aspect of everything that I do. What am I doing? What am I saying? Is it going to make a difference? The clip shows her singing, with vocal fry, "I'm looking for a man in finance. Trust fund. 6'5". Blue eyes."After her video racked up over 53 million views, Boni <a target="_blank" href="https://www.billboard.com/business/record-labels/man-in-finance-tiktok-sound-creator-label-deal-1235692123/">signed a deal with a major record label</a> and performed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@grxciefox/video/7375795789601279278">a remixed version of her catchphrase</a> with electronic DJ David Guetta.If nothing else, Boni has turned the spotlight back onto the rarefied Wall Street world of suits, ties, and Patagonia vests. The Wall Street Journal has already declared it "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/lifestyle/man-in-finance-song-tiktok-09ac3457">The Summer of the Finance Bro</a>."She may have also unwittingly boosted their appeal to potential suitors. The League, a dating and social networking app that says it's for "ambitious" singles, reported male users who said they work in finance received likes "10% faster than before" and increased matches since Boni's TikTok blew up.As someone who is dating a man in finance, I'll be the first to admit that having a relationship with someone in an industry <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-wall-streets-culture-is-contributing-to-the-loneliness-crisis-2023-11">reputed for toxic workplaces</a> isn't always as fun as it sounds. There have been date nights interrupted by an urgent work call or email, and times when I woke up at 3 a.m. to my partner getting home from the office, bleary-eyed and exhausted.Working in finance, however, can mean many things, and the average "finance guy" in the United States is most likely far from "The Wolf of Wall Street."The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link c-link--focus-visible" href="https://www.bls.gov/ooh/business-and-financial/home.htm">Bureau of Labor Statistics</a> put the number of Americans — not just men — working in "financial activities at <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link c-link--focus-visible" href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/empsit.pdf">over 9.2 million</a> as of May. That number includes middle- and back-office employees in operational roles like tech and marketing who are often paid in the low six figures. While still well above the nation's median salary, their compensation pales in comparison to the jobs people think of when it comes to Wall Street: <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/investment-bank-analyst-associate-starting-salaries-goldman-sachs-jpmorgan-citi-morgan-stanley">investment bankers,</a> <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wall-streets-hiring-plans-from-jpmorgan-goldman-blackrock-citi-more">private-equity dealmakers</a>, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/investment-bank-analyst-associate-starting-salaries-goldman-sachs-jpmorgan-citi-morgan-stanley">traders</a>. Those roles can make millions of dollars a year.Here, five women with firsthand experience dating a man in finance share their experiences. Some women spoke to Business Insider on the condition of anonymity so they could speak freely about their dating experiences. Their identities are known to BI.Some women dating men with demanding jobs discussed the challenges, from getting stood up due to work running late and endless conversations about golf and money. Others, however, said qualities they appreciated in their finance-industry partners were their ambition and ability to pay their own way.<h2 id="042a6d9f-4515-4c07-9112-6f4af4b5324b">They're often unavailable and can be self-involved</h2>A self-described "hopeless romantic," Cristina Vanko gravitates toward guys who are "clean cut" and professional, with a good sense of humor.Vanko, a 35-year-old advertising art director based in NYC, has dated enough men in finance that she can now spot them from their outfits (vests and expensive watches) and how they hold conversations (charming, but never diving "too deep").Her recent experiences include a February first date with a 37-year-old JPMorgan banker who wouldn't stop talking about his work schedule and how "unavailable" it made him.It came off like a warning but also a test, she added, almost as if he was trying to gauge whether she'd be OK with him prioritizing work going forward."When you're in love with somebody, I think you could still make yourself available," she said. "My mom's a doctor. Like, you're not saving lives."<div type="image" title="wall street bankers" height="1333" width="2000" msid="111485034" hostid="261" sizebytes="94924"></div>Vanko described a different romantic encounter with a guy she met up with more than once who worked in private equity.He was open about his reluctance to commit due to work and travel. At one point, she asked him if he was seeing anyone else. She said he responded frankly: "I have a London girl. You're my American girl, and I have a girl in Berlin."One of Vanko's longest entanglements was with a vice president at Goldman Sachs, whom she met on a dating app in 2023. Their first date was at a wine bar. From the cable-knit sweater he'd thrown on to the Rolex watch poking out from beneath his sleeve, Vanko clocked him as a "finance bro" instantly.After a few more dates, she went on vacation to Los Angeles and returned to find he was dating someone else. Vanko said he slid back into her DMs when that relationship ended, complaining about his inability to find a partner and settle down.Reflecting on his attitude, Vanko said, "I'm not your therapist. I'm happy to be your friend. But it got to the point that I was just like, 'You're complaining about this other girl. Weren't you trying to date me?'"<h2 id="4afb4115-d492-48ea-a34c-1e8dba288f57">Couples need trust to feel comfortable with the long workdays</h2>A 24-year-old based in Chicago said her fiancé, a financial analyst for the auto industry, is proof that not all men in finance are cut from the same cloth."He's an extremely humble person, and he just has the biggest heart," said the Chicago resident, who works in PR and communications. Because they've been a couple for eight years, she said, she knew him before his "excruciating work hours."If she didn't know him so well, she said, she might feel "anxiety" about the lack of communication and access to his phone he typically has during long days on the job.She said she understands why people trying to pursue relationships with men in finance might wonder: "Does this guy even like me? He's not responding to me. He doesn't want to hang out with me."She said they've had to have "hard conversations" and set "boundaries" to ensure they prioritize each other despite their demanding careers.Big date nights happen a handful of times a month — and always on weekends — but they try to have dinner together during the week without phones or laptops present, she said.I asked her about the Journal's claim of a "finance bro" summer."What finance bro is actually having a finance bro summer?" she asked. "They don't really get a lot of time off."<h2 id="5a83f23b-e080-42d0-b553-bcc9c441ad77">Some seem obsessed with playing golf and making money</h2>In the summer of 2023, a woman interning at a private investment management firm in Boston met a senior investment consultant on a dating app. The woman, who asked to be referred to by her middle name, Summer, is now 23 and based in Washington DC.On paper, he fit her type — older, good-looking, and ambitious. They went on to date most of that summer.According to Summer, he was "obsessed" with two things: golf and money. I'm dating you because I enjoy your company."In addition to other misgivings about him, Summer said their conversations never went beyond the surface despite her efforts to dig deeper.The relationship ended abruptly toward the end of her internship, Summer said, a week after they became exclusive.In text messages shared with BI, Summer's former fling said they were going in two "different directions." She also said he told her he couldn't see her because he was getting shoulder surgery, which would prevent him from being intimate with her.Looking back roughly a year later, Summer said she thinks he only saw her as "an attractive person.""I don't think he saw me as an actual person," she added.<h2 id="ad918266-304f-417d-aefa-53d0eebafc50">It can be a relief to be with someone who earns a good salary</h2>A 25-year-old working in marketing in NYC said she's drawn to men in finance because she works in an "industry that you don't make a lot of money.""My ex-boyfriend was literally a starving artist, and it was awful," she said. "I just wanted someone who made money and who would give me a nice lifestyle."Not to mention, she added, "ambition is sexy.""Someone who works hard is better than a bum," she said.Still, dating her current partner, an investment banking analyst, since 2022 hasn't always been smooth sailing.The work hours are tough, and there have been nights, especially in the first year of the relationship, when she'd turn up at his apartment only to be let in by his roommate and be left waiting hours for him to come home from work.She and the investment banker are preparing to move in together. Last Sunday, she said she was left packing boxes by herself after he said he had too much work to help.It's tough, but she said it's not like he's just ditching her to go drinking with his buddies. As she put it, it's more like he has to do his work or he "will get fired."Overall, she feels like she "got lucky" with her boyfriend because he makes an effort to prioritize her, like working from home whenever he can manage it just to be close to her — something she knows not all bankers do.She warned anyone dating an investment banker that it's "nice in theory and hard in practice.""You will get canceled on," she added.<h2 id="33264a7c-4b53-48a6-8493-310e72ed3e23">You may have to live by their schedule</h2>A 24-year-old marketing professional in NYC was friends with a man who worked in finance for years before their relationship blossomed into something more romantic.They dated for a year and a half, during which he worked in investment banking.Physically, he fit Boni's TikTok to a T. "I swear to God that TikTok was made about him," she said. "Someone must have seen him on the street."When they started dating, the marketer said she told herself, "He works a lot, but I can manage. I'll just see him when I can see him."But endless work hours, which sometimes stretched until 4 a.m. and took over weekends, proved too much, especially as he'd routinely ditch dinners with her family or cancel date nights due to his schedule.The marketer said her mantra became telling herself the trying schedule wouldn't last forever because many investment bankers eventually transition to easier-going roles.But by November 2023, she said was done being "second to someone's job.""I was like, 'Listen, man, you want to have your job, I totally respect that, but I need to have my own life,'" she recalled to BI.In hindsight, they just weren't "meant to be," she added.That aside, her advice to anyone in NYC taking the viral TikTok about looking for a man in finance to heart is to "widen their horizons.""There's so much more than just the finance bros," she said.<h2 id="1070e09c-bf9e-4d4a-a077-42d66efb46ff">He's been 'saving' his entire life for me</h2>Aniesia Williams — a 43-year-old entrepreneur and chief client officer for a tech firm Epigen — had little experience dating men in finance.But in January, Williams matched with her now-boyfriend, Dennis Morrow, on Bumble.Williams, based in Raleigh, North Carolina, said Morrow lives about three hours away, in Charlotte. He works for Bank of America combatting fraud and moonlights as a comedian, Williams added.She usually dated people in her sector older than 40. Morrow is 36.From their first date, Williams said she was transparent that she was "dating to marry."Morrow was completely on board, something that she found refreshing. While she enjoys his financial savvy, she said his job didn't make a huge difference."I could have cared less," she said. "I just wanted to make sure that he was a good human."
