STAGE’s vision is to become a platform for entertainment, connection and celebration of cultures for all dialect speaking people in the country. Shark Tank S2 participant STAGE raises ₹40 crore in a Series A round

And, the company that dominated discussions online is one that received no funding — Recode Studios, an online marketplace and makeup brand. Punjab-based acquaintances Dheeraj Bansal and Rahul Sachdeva started Recode Studios as a makeup brand in 2018. Later, in 2021, it grew into an online marketplace selling cosmetics across 60 brands. Sachdeva was already in this line, working with a cosmetic brand, Make Over, and had gained the necessary expertise in the industry. Bansal however worked as a manufacturer of bicycle spare parts before starting Recode. "When Rahul approached me with the proposal, I recognised the chance to advance in this field and went from the bicycle to the cosmetic industry. Rahul's marketing expertise in the cosmetics industry and mine in management and operations helped us kick-start our venture,” Bansal told <a href="https://yourstory.com/2022/11/cosmetics-startup-recode-studios-afforability-beauty-products-ludhiana">YourStory</a>. Started in 2018, Recode Studios launched its brand with products like nail paint, lipsticks, eyeliner and kajal — which are make-up kit must-haves. The founders saw that affordability was always an issue for buyers, and that struck a chord with them. The decision to shift from a pure cosmetic brand to an online marketplace came when the company suffered severe losses during the pandemic. Consequently, the founders shared on Shark Tank India that they decided to sell-off their products, which were going to expire in 8-10 months, in a ₹1 flash sale. “This allowed us to get consumer feedback on the quality of our products while also being economically lucrative. Since everyone we sold to spread the word to their friends and family, we also increased our customer base,” Bansal further added. They built a strong customer base among middle-class households who find international brands too expensive. Other than its own make-up products, the platform also offers products of brands like WOW Skin Science, Colorbar, Mirabela and others. The company imports products from countries like Germany, Thailand and Taiwan. It has a tie-up with over 300 offline stores and has three franchise stores in Delhi, Faridabad and Raipur. While pitching, both Bansal and Sachdeva explained their customer acquisition strategy. The startup organises offline makeup classes for girls in five-star properties that last 3-4 hours, at ₹1,500 per class. Famous makeup artists teach them different make-up techniques, and they receive products worth ₹1,500 along with a free lunch at the venue. “This is a no profit no loss move and actually a cost to the company,” said Rahul in the show. “The students then come to buy those products again and that’s how we build our customer base,” he added. This unique customer acquisition strategy impressed the sharks in the show, especially Lenskart founder Peyush Bansal, who quipped that even he would try to offer free lunch at eye-testing camps. Recode didn’t get any funding on the show, allegedly because it was a direct competitor of Sugar Cosmetics - the venture founded by shark Vineeta Singh. Nevertheless, since the episode aired, Recode and its acquisition model has gained a lot of traction on social media. The startups offered content across entertainment, tech, politics, health and more. “Most of our traffic was dependent on Facebook with a majority chunk coming from the USA, approximately 60 million users from there. In November 2018, Mark Zuckerberg got stuck in legal battles due to Cambridge Analytica and we got blocked. STAGE is our comeback,” said Shashank Vaishnav, co-founder and CTO of STAGE, told Business Insider India. Beyond languages to dialects Fast forward to 2019, STAGE shifted focus from out-of-India subscribers to Bharat. The startup claims to provide, quite literally, a ‘stage’ to local artists across India. Going beyond the regional language based OTTs that are already gaining attention, this startup claims to provide content across different dialects across Rajasthan and Haryana. “In India, there are about 50 OTT platforms uploading regional based content. Dialects don’t have their own scripts, cinema or literature as opposed to language. Haryana has 11 different dialects, Bhojpuri alone spoken by 100 million people. STAGE aims to give a platform to local artists from these spaces,” said <keyword id="16058" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="singhal" source="Orion">Singhal</keyword>. Regional OTTs like Koode in Malayalam, City Short TV in Gujarati, aha in Telugu, hoichoi of Bengali and Planet Marathi are some of the regional streaming services that are popular with users within and outside India. Video viewership in India is dominated by the regional language user base. Consumers today spend about 50-60 percent of the average time on Hindi videos, followed closely by 35-43% on regional content videos with only 5-7% on English, states a <a href="https://ficci.in/events/23490/ISP/The%20Digital%20First%20journey_Web.pdf">FICCI-KPMG</a> ‘The Digital First Journey’ report. After independence, India preached the idea of one nation, one language. Languages that had their own script and culture survived while dialects, which are spoken in conversations, began getting lost, Singhal said. “Hindi grew rapidly and thus dialects began to shrink. In 1900, India had about 19,500 different spoken dialects and languages. As of today, only 700 of these remain,” he added. STAGE currently has over 5,000 artists, uploading content in dialects of Mewari, Harauti, Sikhawati, Bangaru to name a few. The top 6 metros contribute only 10% to India’s OTT universe but 33% to total paid subscriptions in India,” said The Ormax OTT Audience Sizing Report 2022. Indian OTTs have already hit a wall when it comes to acquiring the next set of customers. “A large share of the 20% growth in audience base has come from rural India and small towns. The metro cities have reached saturation levels, with more than 79% OTT penetration. Platforms will have to rely on the smaller markets for the next phase of growth,” said <keyword id="161338" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shailesh-kapoor" source="Orion">Shailesh Kapoor</keyword>, founder and CEO of Ormax Media. And, it’s a growing business. As per <a href="https://ficci.in/events/23490/ISP/The%20Digital%20First%20journey_Web.pdf">FICCI-KPMG</a> report, the demand for original content was estimated to increase from 2,500 hours in 2021 to over 4,000 hours by 2024. Moreover, there is enough and more talent across the grassroots that can be easily channelized onto the OTT platform. “Standup artists from hyperlocal regions take to this craft because their real dream is to become an actor. Since the nascent industry of dialects is not making any movies, they started performing stand up to gain exposure. We have successfully created a local Bollywood in Haryana. They even refer to the industry as ‘Hariwood’. The same situation is in Rajasthan,” said Vinay Singhal. The fact that movies like Kantara in a tribal setting found viewers across India, shows that hyperlocal platforms are capable of telling compelling ‘stories of the soil’. Very literally, there are many dances like the one seen in Kantara and have not been showcased on the right platform as of now. “There are numerous local folk dances that people enjoy locally a lot. For example, in Haryana there is a live theatrical folk dance called Ragni. In Rajasthan, there is Kalbeliya dance, which is also a popular folk music performance widely witnessed in the state. We have started recording these local artists and their folk rituals and performances for STAGE,” said Parveen Singhal, chief content officer at STAGE, told Business Insider India. A cockroach born in the winter In spite of great potential, STAGE like most startups has to face the test of time that’s funding winter. But the startup itself is a survival story, and claims to be a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/article/unicorns-are-pass-cockroaches-are-the-new-favourites-of-venture-capitalists/articleshow/95734214.cms">cockroach</a> that’s tough enough to survive any adversity. “We are very frugal and our company was born in the winter so we are confident of raising and maintaining capital. But capital infusion will see improvement from April 2023 onwards because there is a lot of dry powder available in the market. Last year, the VCs raised a significant amount of capital to be deployed in startups,” Singhal said. The idea of appearing on Shark Tank India Season 2, with their episode airing on January 4, was initially dismissed by the founders as the previous season of the show only funded early stage startups. STAGE was in the process of raising their Series A funding. But it was a pleasant surprise for the startup to discover that the show now progressed from early stage to late stage funding as well. STAGE was offered ₹1.5 crore for 0.6% equity and ₹1.5 crore debt at 18% interest from Namita Thapar, Aman Gupta and <keyword id="824423" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="peyush-bansal" source="Orion">Peyush Bansal</keyword>, judges at Shark Tank India Season 2, which they accepted. “We have already started preparing our website for the kind of traffic that is expected from the reality show, which has led to 3 times growth for companies who featured last season. Even though the judges are known to ask tough questions, they understood our story and it was an emotional moment for us,” said Singhal. A hyperlocal OTT born in funding winter wants to tell stories in Indian dialects

New Delhi, May 2 () Internet companies like Urban Company, MakeMyTrip, Dunzo, HealthifyMe and Zomato are changing their social media handles and app icons to promote wearing face masks as a hygiene practice amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Apna Mask initiative -- an effort by StartUpVsCOVID (a startup community with over 1,000 members) -- is promoting homemade masks and aims to drive behavioural change to ensure that people wear masks and stay protected as they step out of their homes. The #ApnaDeshApnaMask campaign was kicked off by startup industry stalwarts like Rajan Anandan of Sequoia India, Paytm's Vijay Shekhar Sharma, Alok Mittal (Indifi), Vishal Gondal (GoQii) and others. They were later joined by celebrities like Vidya Balan, Dia Mirza, Juhi Chawla, Divya Khosla Kumar, Juhi Parmar, Deepshika Deshmukh, Sonu Sood, Shama Sikander, Preetika Rao and others. Within a span of two weeks, the initiative has garnered 100 million outreach across digital platforms, including WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. The team working on the campaign also reached out to various organisations to support the initiative, especially as parts of the country get ready to come out of the lockdown which has been extended till May 17. "Urban Company, MakemyTrip, Dunzo, HealthifyMe, Zomato, Redbus, Ixigo, MoneyTap, MyUpchaar, Bounce, RazorPay, Medanta, WittyFeed, LBB, Porter, Meesho, Daily Hunt, 1mg, Paytm Games have changed their social media handles while some are changing the app icons as well," a statement said. These brands are also inviting more companies to join the initiative. "Given the immense response we have received, we will have more brands join #ApnaMask in this critical initiative. We believe some of these steps will be helpful in building habit changing behaviour towards wearing homemade masks," Poonam Kaul, co-founder of ApnaMask, said. In a separate statement, Crowdera -- an online fundraising platform -- said it is offering its premium syndicated fundraising technology solutions for free to companies and NGOs working to help the COVID-19 affected individuals, families and health workers. "Crowdera will be extending its support through offering its products and services worth almost USD 150,000 (Rs 1 crore) free to organisations aiding the affected...The solution will help corporations and NGOs to quickly syndicate with their own employees, influencers, other foundations, or charity partners to raise funds 10X more than through a regular crowdfunding campaign," it said. Under this pledge, Crowdera has already extended its support to companies like Rapido, Repos, BYJU'S, SirfTaxi, and Tartl to engage their employees and partners in fundraising for the COVID-affected workforce.
