Wistron, one of Apple’s manufacturing partners, just had its ₹5,091 crore project application <a href="https://telecom.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/wistrons-rs-5000-crore-plan-for-apple-gets-ministry-nod/68296665">approved</a> by the IT Ministry — but it yet to be greenlit by the cabinet.

 The company has already secured a 43-acre plot near Bengaluru to setup the new plant for the project. Wistron isn’t the only company to ramp up local production in India. In December 2018, Foxconn — another manufacturing arm of Apple — also announced plans to locally manufacture ‘high-end’ iPhones in India. For <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=apple+iphone&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Apple</a>, it’s a win on two fronts. One, it might be able to reduce the price of iPhones in the world’s second largest smartphone market. And two, widening assembly beyond China will help the company <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/xiaomi-apple-samsung-will-fight-over-india-as-china-sales-slump/articleshow/67488525.cms">mitigate the risks</a> of the US-China trade war. Wistron’s India story If you haven’t heard of Wistron, then you might have heard of Optiemus — popularly known as the company that makes Blackberry devices. A joint-venture between the two made them the <a href="https://telecom.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/optiemus-wistron-is-largest-contract-phone-maker-in-india/52894692">largest</a> contract phone makers in India in 2016 — manufacturing phones for LG, OnePlus and HTC. When it comes to Apple, Wistron is already assembling the iPhone SE and 6S in India. But, ‘assembling’ isn’t the same as making a phone from scratch. It’s one of the reasons that the iPhones are still expensive. When you’re assembling a phone, you’re still importing all the parts — and thus, still subject to import duty. Manufacturing a phone in India itself could <a href="https://9to5mac.com/2019/03/07/iphone-8-iphone-xs-india/">potentially</a> reduce prices of iPhones by 40% foregoing the government tariffs. The plan that Wistron put before the Indian government included the production of the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and the iPhone XR — Apple’s most recent iPhones. But even taking the 40% surcharge out of the equation, the iPhone — the price of the iPhone XS Max begins at ₹109,900 and the cheapest of the three variants, the iPhone XR, costs at least ₹76,900. Two years ago, adjusting the price of a smartphone might have been enough to win over the Indian market. But, it might not be enough to conquer the increase in competition with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/this-massive-chinese-phone-company-outsmarted-apple-in-china-and-india-and-now-its-heading-to-the-west/articleshow/67726507.cms">new players</a> coming in. And even consumers have evolved beyond price, something that Xiaomi, ASUS and Samsung are capitalizing on by bringing in higher specifications on budget devices. Before it got into smartphone production, Wistron was exclusively Acer’s manufacturing arm. It only became its own entity in 2000. (also known as Foxconn), Inventec Corp., and <a href="https://bi.slack.com/archives/DT7TE0KRC/p1585319234003200"></a>Pegatron Corp., are also considering reorganizing their supply chains.The potential to reorient manufacturing locations was ushered in as the trade war between China and the US erupted and is becoming an increasingly serious consideration as the coronavirus ravages supply chains and the global economy, according to Bloomberg. Both the plight of the trade war and the coronavirus epidemic reveal the risks of relying on one country to manufacture a product.Wistron Corp. already produces some iPhone technology in India as well as Vietnam and Mexico and is saving $1 billion to continue spreading its manufacturing efforts elsewhere, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-27/iphone-makers-look-beyond-china-in-supply-chain-rethink">the report said</a>. Producers such as Pegatron are also looking to expand into Vietnam and India: Pegatron is already branching out to Indonesia and hopes to expand in Taiwan as well.The same goes for smaller manufacturers with partnerships outside of Apple, such as Meiloon Industrial Co., a speaker producer for Harman International Industries and Xiaomi Corp."We're talking about adjusting some knobs, not some sort of wholesale, fundamental change," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in late February the company wasn't making any sudden changes because of the coronavirus shake-up, according to Bloomberg. Moving production outside of China is not a simple process for companies because of the ease China offers, including a large market base, skilled workers, productive distribution systems, and a closely-knit network of suppliers. Coronavirus is pushing Apple's iPhone makers to find new manufacturing frontiers outside of China

The financial details of the deal have not been made public and the two companies reportedly plan on filing for approval from the Competition Commission of India (CCI) soon. <h2>Tata’s iPhone production in India to get a boost</h2>Tata already operates an iPhone assembly plant in Karnataka, which it acquired from Taiwanese giant Wistron last year. The company is building a second plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. Tata to buy a majority stake in Pegatron's iPhone plant in India

New Delhi, June 11 (IANS) With a three-pronged strategy (restart, restore and resurgence), India can achieve $100 billion in mobile phones and nearly $40 billion in component exports by 2025, a new report said on Thursday. The strategy document titled "Mobile Manufacturing in a post-COVID-19 World" by industry body India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) and consultancy major EY, offers a roadmap for the Indian industry to become a global supplier of mobile phones in a world where two countries -- China and Vietnam -- and five global companies dominate over 80 per cent of the world's export market. Nearly 198 countries import mobile phones, and till recently, only two countries -- China and Vietnam -- were among the exporters. India joined the ranks as a third with a modest $3 billion exports in 2019-20. It now aims to target the number two spot. "The mobile manufacturing and components sector is ready to lead India's post COVID-19 exit strategy. Production has restarted. We hope to hit 100% production by August," Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman, ICEA, told reporters in a video call. India earlier this month launched three major schemes to boost manufacture of electronics in the country -- Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI) for large-scale electronics manufacturing, Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors (SPECS), and Modified Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMC 2.0) Scheme. The three schemes would entail an outlay of about Rs 50,000 crore. "As the PLI scheme kicks in, we plan to ramp up global exports from India. There isn't a moment left to waste," Mohindroo added. He said that the Indian mobile phone manufacturing industry is moving forward harmoniously. "There is no such this as a domestic lobby and an international lobby here...We cannot work only on the supposedly big Indian market. We will have to export," he said, adding that in the next four to five years the big global companies will be manufacturing in India for their global exports. ICEA represents mobile and component manufacturers such as Apple, Motorola, Xiaomi, Nokia, Foxconn, Wistron, Flextronics, Lava, Vivo and others. The plan prepared by ICEA and EY which aims at transforming mobile manufacturing and components into India's largest export within the next 3-4 years, aligns closely with the government's National Policy on Electronics (NPE-2019). "The introduction of the incentive schemes like PLI, SPECS and EMC will bring resurgence in the manufacturing environment and create a competitive global ecosystem for India to capture the global market share of mobile phones, parts and accessories," said Bipin Sapra, Indirect Tax Partner Telecom sector, EY India. The report also pointed out areas of improvement, such as the need to shift large-scale global value chains, reduce cost of inputs and the need to increase competitiveness by building a low-cost domestic ecosystem and seeking partnership with states to address India's disabilities. <a href="http://tactustechnology.com/" target="_blank">Tactus Technology</a> is working with Tawainese electronics manufacturer Wistron to create a shape-shifting iPad case that can lift a physical keyboard out of a flat screen whenever you need to type.
We <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/tactus-technology-tactile-touchscreen-2014-1" target="_blank">first saw the Tactus prototype</a> this year at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, but after a $13.5 million Series B fundraise and the partnership with Wistron cemented last month, the company will be ready to start shipping cases this year for between $80 and $100.
Here's how it works:
Tactus has created a thin, clear layer that looks almost exactly like a screen protector you'd place on your iPad. The surface is a semi-elastic polymer, and underneath it are little channels filled with a special micro-fluid. By adding or taking away fluid, Tactus can make the keyboard either pop up or melt away.
When you buy the iPad case, this layer will connect to the hard-shell backing, which will have a switch on its side. By moving the switch, you can push out transparent, physical buttons over the iPad's standard keyboard. The keys can appear and disappear almost instantly.

Wistron, which has produced devices for companies such as Apple, Acer, and BlackBerry, will have the cases ready to go this year. The company is also capable of mass producing products with Tactus' shape-shifting tech baked inside. Meaning, instead of buying a case, you could simply buy a phone that replaces the usual Gorilla glass screen with one made using Tactus micro-fluids. Tactus CEO Craig Ciessla told Business Insider that he hopes to start manufacturing phones with the Tactus screen built-in sometime next year. 
Ciesla and his co-founder Micah Yairi came up with the idea for Tactus in 2008 when Yairi was working with a company making micro-fluids for medical devices. Ciesla, who had always used a BlackBerry, had troubling typing with the recently released iPhone's touch-screen and longed for his keyboard back. The pair decided to try to see if they could use micro-fluids to create a dynamic keyboard. Six years later, they're ready to ship their first product.
