<ul class="summary-list"><li>Japanese tech firm Docomo showed off a small tea-making robot at MWC 2023.</li><li>The robot relies on motion-sharing technology so that it can mimic a human counterpart.</li></ul><p>Robotics companies have long focused on pushing their cyborgs to the limit by making them perform increasingly-difficult athletic activities like parkour.</p><p>But the latest generation of robots has been tasked with something far more straightforward: making tea.</p><p>Japan's Docomo showed off a small tea-making robot at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week that was more impressive for its ability to mimic humans than its physical prowess.</p><p>Docomo's robot relied on the company's motion-sharing technology that enabled it to follow the actions of its human counterpart in real-time. A demonstrator hooked up with a series of motion detectors simulated all the actions involved in brewing tea while the robot performed the same actions with an actual cup.</p><p>The motion can be recorded and repeated at any point, so the robot could stir tea by itself, a Docomo representative said. The ability of the robot to mimic human actions could eventually boast an array of real-life use cases that could see menial and repetitive tasks automated.</p><div type="image" title="Docomo's tea-making robot at MWC23" height="4000" width="5333" msid="98373532" hostid="261" sizebytes="442906"></div><p>It is powered by a device that records the person's state and transfers it to the robot. The company expects to be able to do this wirelessly once 6G, the next generation of mobile broadband, comes to fruition.</p><p>Each generation of mobile broadband is touted as faster and more reliable. The fifth generation, or 5G, promises better download and upload speeds and wider connectivity. Despite 5G still being rolled out, there was a clear buzz around 6G at MWC this year. </p><p>The tea-making robot is just one way in which Docomo demonstrated human augmentation at MWC. It also applied the motion transfer tech to a musical keyboard and showed off extended reality, or XR.</p><p>Docomo's overall goal is to create haptics so people can share emotions and skills with other people – not unlike those shown off in Amazon Prime's "<a href="https://time.com/6223655/the-peripheral-amazon-book/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Peripheral</a>," based on a book of the same name that allows characters to sync up with each other's feelings. </p><div type="image" title="Docomo's tea-making robot at MWC23" height="4000" width="5333" msid="98373533" hostid="261" sizebytes="432976"></div><p>The company envisions a future where each of the five senses can be transferred between people, with applications from medicine to art. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Roman Pedan founded short-term rental platform Kasa Living in 2016.</li><li>He traveled the country for five months and stayed at Kasa properties while working remotely.</li></ul><p><em>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Roman Pedan, founder of short-term rental company <a href="https://kasa.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kasa Living</a>, about his decision to spend five months working remotely while living in Kasa properties across some of the 45 US cities the company has a presence in. The conversation has been edited for length and clarity.</em></p><p>Previously, my longest stint fully living in Kasa properties was a few months in 2021 when I was between moves. This is now the longest — it started in late October 2022 and it'll end probably in June or July.</p><p>This time is different because I'm traveling with my significant other when I didn't in the past.</p><p>It's been exciting to explore the cities with somebody and also to see that this adventure is possible not only by an individual but also with two people who are working full-time.</p><h2>I need a good amount of time in each city to enjoy traveling</h2><p>We found that if you're in a city for too little time you don't really get a sense and feel for the area that you're in. You don't spend time investing in your space, unpacking your stuff and putting it on the shelves, and actually experiencing the city outside of the main tourist attractions. </p><p>Three weeks is what we've been trying to do. Three to six weeks is the sweet spot.</p><p>In every location I thought I would do a certain thing that the location is known for. I had the idea that I was going to ski a bunch in Salt Lake City, and then go to the water all the time in LA. </p><div type="image" title="Downtown Salt Lake City" height="3000" width="3999" msid="98414390" hostid="261" sizebytes="1394544"></div><p>I went on a hike with someone from the Mormon Church when I was in Salt Lake City and I really got to know their lifestyle. During that period I actually didn't drink caffeine or alcohol. That's one portion of the lifestyle of the church, not the entirety by any stretch, but it was nice to feel the integration into the community.</p><p>But most of the time you're working. In some ways, you're in a different place but doing the same thing — you free up at night after work and it's already dark.</p><p>One thing I've tried to do to make sure I'm getting the most out of things is make a list of the people that I know in any given location. It's easy to forget that people from different walks of life, whether it's high school or college, spread out in different cities. They won't know you're there, so you need to make an intentional effort to reach out to them and find time to reconnect.</p><h2>Working conditions for more than one person felt cramped at times</h2><p>Having a really good work setup wherever I am is really important to ensure productivity. I have two monitors here and a wireless mouse and keyboard that I bring with me — but packing a monitor is not the most ideal thing.</p><p>This trip made me think we should offer an ability for guests to have a work setup in any location, if they would like, as an add-on. </p><p>Also, my partner and I found it challenging to work from the same space. Sometimes one of us was working in the walk-in closet while the other one was working in the kitchen area. Neither was ideal. </p><p>It's something that is more and more important and I don't think Kasa's been as consistent in providing a dedicated place to work that has outlets and a good, comfortable chair. </p><p>Even small things like lighting at the bed that allows you to read and easy-to-access outlets that allow you to plug in your phone are things that may be quite obvious, but we're going to add them to more Kasa properties.</p><p>Ultimately, I want to live and experience our products through the eyes of our guests so we can make it better. Seeing that there are more people who are choosing to live this way or choosing Kasa for similar purposes makes this a more useful trip than in the past.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6354427" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="apple">Apple</keyword>'s <keyword id="8291932" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="iPhone-12">iPhone 12</keyword> may not come with a power adapter or wired headphones, according to TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.</li><li>Apple may omit these accessories to keep the cost of the <keyword id="6354606" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="iPhone">iPhone</keyword> 12, expected to be its first 5G-enabled smartphone, around the same price as the iPhone 11 lineup.</li><li>Kuo predicts Apple may not include the power adapter, but did not say whether a Lightning cable would still be included.</li><li>Kuo is known for his generally accurate predictions about future Apple products. </li></ul><p>Those planning to buy Apple's iPhone 12 when it's expected to launch in the fall may find that the box is missing two familiar accessories: a power adapter and Apple's wired headphones.</p><p>That's according to TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who wrote in a new research note that the power adapter and EarPods headphones may not come included with Apple's next iPhone. Kuo's research was reported by Apple blogs <a href="https://9to5mac.com/2020/06/28/iphone-12-no-earbuds-power-adapter/">9to5Mac</a>, <a href="https://www.macrumors.com/2020/06/28/kuo-no-charger-in-iphone-12-box/">MacRumors</a>, and <a href="https://appleinsider.com/articles/20/06/28/new-108-inch-85-inch-ipads-will-have-20w-charger-says-ming-chi-kuo">Apple Insider</a> on Sunday.</p><p>Apple is reportedly nixing these accessories to keep the cost of its next flagship iPhone around the same price as that of the iPhone 11 lineup. The iPhone 12 is expected to be Apple's first smartphone to come with 5G support, and Kuo predicts that slimming down the packaging by omitting the power adapter and headphones could help offset some of additional costs resulting from the addition of 5G.</p><p>The move could also make the iPhone's packaging more eco-friendly, particularly as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-lisa-jackson-interview-on-daisy-robot-new-lab-in-texas-2019-4">sustainability has become a bigger factor</a> in the way the company designs and ships its products. </p><p>Apple will reportedly release a new 20W charger that will be sold separately as an optional accessory, Kuo says. That charger would be larger than the 5W and 18W power adapters currently sold with Apple's iPhones. </p><p>The reports do not mention whether Kuo expects the Lightning cable to be included.</p><p>Apple did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.</p><p>It's not the first time reports have suggested that Apple's next iPhone won't come with wired headphones in the box. Kuo <a href="https://9to5mac.com/2020/05/20/kuo-no-free-earpods-iphone-12/">made a similar prediction</a> back in May, but that report didn't make any mention of Apple eliminating the power adapter too.</p><p>If Apple does decide not to include a power adapter or wired headphones with the iPhone 12, it'll likely cause some controversy. Apple's decision to remove the headphone jack on the iPhone 7 was met with pushback, as some <keyword id="6358815" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tech">tech</keyword> journalists initially <a href="https://venturebeat.com/2016/09/10/iphone-7-no-headphone-jack/">criticized the choice</a> <a href="https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2016/6/21/11991302/iphone-no-headphone-jack-user-hostile-stupid">at the time</a>.</p><p>There's an argument to be made for why Apple shouldn't include a power adapter and wired headphones with the next iPhone. Longtime iPhone users likely have several pairs of EarPods and iPhone charging bricks sitting in a drawer at home, so it makes sense that Apple wouldn't want to drive up the overall price of the new iPhone by including accessories that many people may already own. </p><p>But doing so would also likely further fuel criticism that Apple is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hundreds-of-people-are-complaining-on-reddit-about-apple-nickel-and-diming-them-2018-11">nickle-and-diming customers</a> for accessories. A <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/9v8i37/what_example_of_apples_nickel_and_diming_has/">Reddit thread</a> from 2018, for example, was loaded with customer complaints about Apple's power cables and storage options.  </p><p>Apple is also reportedly planning to kill the charging port entirely by developing a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-iphone-13-rumor-wireless-no-lightning-charging-port-2019-12">completely wireless iPhone</a> that may launch in 2021, Kuo reported in a previous note from December. Slimming down the iPhone's packaging by excluding accessories that rely on the Lightning port may be an early step in that direction.</p><p>Kuo is known for his generally accurate Apple product predictions. For example, in early 2020 he correctly reported <a href="https://www.macrumors.com/2020/01/29/kuo-on-apple-first-half-of-2020/">that Apple would</a> debut a new iPad Pro this year with a 3D sensor for augmented reality. He was incorrect, however, in saying that the new iPad Pro would come with a triple camera. Apple's latest Pro tablet has two cameras and a Lidar sensor for more precisely tracking a user's surroundings for use in AR apps. </p><p>The analyst also correctly said that <a href="https://www.macrumors.com/2020/03/12/kuo-macbook-pro-air-scissor-keyboard/">Apple would release</a> a MacBook Pro and MacBook Air with Apple's new keyboard in the first half of this year.</p><p>Other than 5G connectivity, Apple's iPhone 12 is expected to come with a new design that resembles the iPad Pro's aesthetic, a Lidar sensor like the one found on the iPad Pro, and a new, smaller size option.</p>

As part of the new system, employees working on Apple's new software will be able to disable features that aren't working properly by default during the testing phase. They will also be able to  enable these buggy features so that they can get a better sense of how these errors are impacting the operating system as a whole.</p><p>The new measures will make it so that Apple's testers are able to actually use the software before its launch to better assess its performance, according to Bloomberg. Before this new process was in place for iOS 14's development, teams would add features to software builds before they had been tested, thus making the software difficult to use. Some teams would add features on a daily basis, while others would integrate them on a weekly basis, says the report.</p><p>Because the software became cluttered with unfinished features that hadn't been evaluated, testers weren't using the software very often and wouldn't remain current on what worked and what didn't says the report.</p><p>Apple did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.</p><p>The shakeup comes after iOS 13 launched with several bugs earlier this year, with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-ios-13-update-release-with-bugs-019-9">iPhone users complaining</a> of glitches that impacted the on-screen keyboard, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi following the update's launch.</p><p>"iOS 13 has felt like a super-messy release, something we haven't seen this bad since iOS 8 or so," developer Steve Troughton-Smith <a href="https://twitter.com/stroughtonsmith/status/1174129036987162624?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1174129036987162624&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.businessinsider.com%2Fapple-ios-13-update-release-with-bugs-019-9">tweeted</a> at the time. "Definitely needs a lengthy period of consolidation and bug fixing."</p><p>In the months since iOS 13's release in September, Apple has released a slew of updates to patch bugs and add features that were announced as being part of the initial software launch. Some bugs caused apps to crash, while others impacted how the phone's wireless service works. </p><p>Apple's new process for testing software before launch will also apply to other products, like the iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Watch, according to Bloomberg. The company has also reportedly considered delaying some iOS 14 features until 2021 to improve performance.</p><p>It wouldn't be the first time Apple has made a big push to emphasize stability and performance when developing new software updates.
