Despite receiving offer letters, the onboarding process has been repeatedly postponed. The affected graduates were required to participate in unpaid pre-training programs and undergo additional, unexpected assessments, further complicating their entry into the workforce. NITES claims that despite fulfilling all the prerequisites set by Infosys, these young professionals have been kept in limbo, leading to significant frustration and anxiety. The union views this situation as a serious breach of trust by Infosys, which has long been regarded as one of the pillars of India’s IT industry. This has only added to their frustration and uncertainty about their future with the company. <h2>Infosys’ Power Programme</h2>In a contrasting development, Infosys is also making headlines for its recent campus placement drive, where it has introduced a new 'power programme.' According to a report by The Times of India, the company is offering pay packages of up to Rs 9 lakh per annum to select colleges, a significant increase from its standard entry-level packages, which typically range from Rs 3-3.5 lakh. This move is seen as part of Infosys’ strategy to attract highly specialized talent in areas such as coding, software development, cloud computing, AI/ML, and cybersecurity. Infosys plans to hire between 15,000 and 20,000 graduates in FY25. During its earnings call last month, Infosys announced plans to resume campus placements and off-campus fresher hiring in the current fiscal year. Infosys delays onboarding of 2,000 graduates for more than 2 years, NITES files complaint

While some feel that the RTO mandate will hamper their productivity, others feel that it is simply unnecessary. And then there are also some people who think that this is a good decision. Let us take a look at how people are reacting on being called back to offices. <h2>How are people reacting?</h2>Social media sites like Reddit, X, and LinkedIn are full of reactions on the RTO mandate. Many employees feel that this will increase their cost and time spent on commute. Amazon’s recent decision to bring its employees back to offices has not sat well with many, especially those accustomed to the <keyword id="20445439" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hybrid-work-model" source="keywords">hybrid work model</keyword>. Overall, most agree that the trend is restructuring organisational hierarchy to enable direct communication between employees and leaders. Cut to 2024, this trend is still prevalent and making headlines. A Bloomberg report recently said that Georges Elhedery, the incoming CEO of HSBC Holdings, might also consider plans to streamline the company's operations by reducing layers of middle management. However, the survey also highlighted that information technology roles and senior professionals were likely to be the most affected by hiring adjustments. About 20 percent of recruiters predicted that layoffs would predominantly impact senior professionals, while freshers are expected to face the least disruption from these hiring corrections. Interestingly the survey came around the same time when the Unbossing trend had begun picking up pace abroad. <h2>Layoffs at Wipro, <keyword id="18635" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="amazon" source="Orion">Amazon</keyword> and Collegedunia</h2>In January this year, Wipro India was in the limelight for laying off hundreds of its mid-level executives. The company reportedly culled many jobs as part of its strategy to improve margins. An ET report citing two sources familiar with the situation had said that the leading Indian IT firm reduced mid-level roles at its onsite locations. "Notices began being issued earlier this month, and hundreds of mid-level executives onsite are being let go," one source revealed. Another source added, "They have costly resources onsite in Capco, and although growth is returning, it's not sufficient. "While Collegedunia is laying off several employees, it is also hiring fresh talent, allowing them to keep staffing levels up but at a lower cost," one employee told CNBC-TV18 at the time. Talking specifically about the Indian scenario, he said, “Implementing this trend in India would be a strategic move, positioning organisations to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving business environment. However, to fully capitalise on this approach, developing a more robust talent pipeline that integrates the ability to multitask at all levels is imperative. In today's landscape, leadership demands thinkers, strategic visionaries, and individuals who can execute with precision. For example, the tech sector often thrives with flattened hierarchies that support rapid innovation and agility, while creative industries such as advertising and media use unbossing to cultivate a more collaborative and idea-focused environment. Thus, the unbossing trend is gaining traction beyond global companies and is finding its way into Indian organisations as well. While this approach can streamline operations, reduce costs, and enhance agility, experts caution that it also brings challenges, such as gaps in leadership development and the loss of institutional knowledge. Wipro will apply PRP to candidates who had opted for a lower package of ₹3.5 lakh per annum, from the initially promised ₹6.5 lakh per annum. For context, Wipro in February slashed the annual compensation for freshers who had already undergone the company’s ‘Velocity’ training programme to ₹3.5 lakh from ₹6.5 lakh per annum. At the time, Wipro blamed the “changing macro environment” and “business needs”. Business Insider India has obtained a copy of the document detailing Wipro’s Project Readiness Programme, which details the contours of the programme. “Project Readiness Programme is a programme offered by Talent Transformation to all campus and off-campus hires referred as NGAs (next-generation associates). The broad objective of PRP is to equip NGA with the necessary knowledge and skills that will enable them to start working on customer projects,” the PRP document says. This has attracted the ire of Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES), a Pune-based union. “Wipro's actions towards its fresher employees are unethical, unfair and unjust. Once completed, candidates will have to present their projects and also answer questions orally. The training programme duration ranges from anywhere between 4 to 8 weeks, with the training done either via e-learning or an instructor. Only those candidates with a minimum score of 60% marks will be eligible for selection, and those who fail to score 60% will be terminated. All candidates will be given three attempts to clear the programme. Wipro is scheduled to announce its Q4 earnings on April 27. The <keyword id="13658159" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nascent-information-technology-employees-senate" source="Orion">Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate</keyword> (NITES) union is seeking to remove the non-compete clause, which states that the employees cannot work for the competitor companies for six months after leaving the company. The clause also forbids the employees to join the workforce of the clients they had worked for in the last 12 months before quitting, according to the letter to minister <keyword id="1850634" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bhupender-yadav" source="Orion">Bhupender Yadav</keyword>. The clause includes these companies in their competitor list — Accenture, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), IBM, Cognizant, and Wipro. “For the period of six months after leaving Infosys, employees will not — accept any offer of employment from any customer, (with whom I worked) in the twelve months immediately preceding my termination or accept any offer of employment from a Named Competitor of Infosys, if my employment with such Named Competitor would involve me having to work with a Customer with whom I had worked in the twelve (12) months immediately preceding the termination of my employment with Infosys,” the clause says according to the letter. The letter was written by the NITES union president, Harpreet Saluja, to the minister stating that the clause violates Section 27 of the Contract Act. “They are likely to affect the employee’s means of procuring a livelihood for himself and his family. Infosys faces backlash over new clause restricting employees from finding a new job

Wipro, which recently saw a change in leadership with Thierry Delaporte at the helm, did not disclose any exact numbers but does have ‘robust’ hiring plans for the second half of the current fiscal. “Very robust hiring this quarter, both laterally and campuses. We continue to see the same momentum going forward,” said the company’s CHRO Saurabh Govil during the second-quarter earnings call. He added that given the company’s current growth momentum, hiring — laterally and via campuses — is an important part of managing that growth. This includes hiring across geographies, including India and in the new business areas, especially cloud and cybersecurity, where the demand lies. India’s IT sector is among the first to recover from the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Infosys is allegedly letting go of hundreds of employees, who are at the fag end of their training and failed the internal assessment tests. The new recruits will have to undergo comprehensive training before they are added into various teams for full-fledged work. Senior employees in the IT Company stated on condition of anonymity that though there is economic slowdown and recession, the companies are focusing more on quality and productivity. Therefore, average talent is not preferred under the circumstances. "The corona pandemic in the last two years has affected the education, quality of students and their skillsets. There is a clear lack regarding teaching and the honing of skills. Many graduates, who passed out in the last two years, are not in a position to prove themselves and there is extreme pressure on the trainees," they explain. Sources explained that the freshers are provided with two chances to clear their assessment. If they fail, they will not be onboarded. However, the freshers who have been sacked from Infosys maintained that members of the teams which did not get projects are being asked to go and those with projects are not touched. Tech industry insiders are of the opinion that the phase is going to last for a while and pressure on industry will be there till 2024. IT giant Wipro has laid off more than 400 fresher employees for poor performance in internal assessment tests in January. The company had issued termination letters to all the employees and stated that despite the adequate training, the candidates have failed to perform. The termination letter maintained that the employees are liable to pay Rs 75,000 of training cost which company has spent on them. But, the amount is being waived off. The edtech sector has laid off the most employees, with 16 edtech startups laying off more than 8,000 employees to date. Homegrown online vehicle repair platform GoMechanic, backed by <keyword id="563136" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sequoia-india" source="Orion">Sequoia India</keyword>, has laid off 70 per cent of its workforce as the startup struggles to raise funds amid serious concerns of accounting troubles. The company has asked the remaining staff to work without pay for three months, according to reports. Software-as-a-service (SaaS) voice automation startup Skit.ai has asked more than 115 employees to go, mostly from its India team, as part of the "restructuring process" amid the deepening funding winter.
