They have been bearing the brunt of the coronavirus crisis over the last few weeks, according to Delaporte. “Therefore if we need to make investments, we will make those investments and that will always be our first priority,” explained Wipro CFO Jatin Dalal. Pushing on remote work solutions Intel will enable Wipro’s LIVE Workspace which will be the company’s digital workspace solution within the Intel vPro platform. It’s basically a digital hub that lets a company manage its devices remotely whether it's at home, in the workplace or somewhere remote. It also promises security against firmware-level attacks. Cybersecurity has been a central concern for many companies as the number of malware attacks during the lockdown have been on the rise. Global IT giant Cognizant was subject to a ransomware attack and another US-based law company saw its clients’ personal data get stolen off its servers.

Business Insider sat down with this kickass inventor-cum-entrepreneur-cum-Venture Capitalist-cum…um, there’s a long list, and got chatting. 
 
The Father of the <keyword id="175778" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Pentium-Processor">Pentium Processor</keyword> was FORCED into Engineering? 
*Laughs* I ultimately followed my passion, and it paid off. You should really do what you want to do, because then work becomes play. 
 
I was forced to shift from Physics. My brother felt I won’t be able to earn enough money in my life. I don’t blame him for that. 
 
I ultimately ended doing my Masters in Solid State Physics, which is basically <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Semi-Conductors">Semi-Conductors</a>. 
 
It’s one of those things where you need to know Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Electronics, Circuit Design, Computer Science, Software, and even Fluid Mechanics. I found it intriguing. 
 
The ‘<keyword id="28115" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Intel">Intel</keyword> Inside’ Campaign catapulted the company into the limelight. Do breakthroughs like that just happen? 
It doesn’t happen overnight. It sometimes takes decades. 
 
Intel had existed since 1969. It was only in 1993-94 that we realized <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Intel+chips">Intel chips</a> were going into 90% of the computers, but no one knew they come fitted with the same processor inside. People just asked for a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Compaq">Compaq</a> or <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=IBM">IBM</a> PC. That made us very envious. 
 
It was then that we came up with the idea of the ‘Intel Inside’ sticker. We offered lower prices to consumers who let us stick those. Then Bill Gates got his, and so on and so forth. That’s how it started. 
 
You’re the go-to microprocessor guy. Is smartphone heating bad engineering or necessary evil? 
It’s a necessary evil. Physics creates the heat. 
 
The architecture has been scaled over the last 40 years to one billionth of the original. You’ve not scaled only one thing, and that’s the voltage or power supply. It was 12 Volts earlier, soon became 5 Volts, and finally 3.3 Volts. 
 
If you don’t scale everything, heat will be created as a byproduct. You’re at an atomic level. You can’t go beyond that. So you’ll have to live with the heat. 
 
Alternately, you can try chilling and other mechanisms that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Apple">Apple</a> is trying. 
 
India’s Smartphone Boom and the Microprocessors Industry 
It had to happen. It was just a matter of time. 
 
Today, if you want to buy the original Pentium machine I built in 1991, it will cost you $200,000. 
 
The only smartphones that are going to be made are the new ones. You can blame Moore’s Law for that. Amazing guy! 
 
Why doesn’t India have a global Software brand? 
The very fact that we are the ultimate destination for software services in the world is our weakness. In <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=IT+Services">IT Services</a> the mindset is of service. We’re waiting to be told what to do. 
 
We have an entire generation of young engineers who’ll do anything you tell them to. They’re very smart kids, don’t get me wrong. However, in the process we’ve not allowed them to be creative. 
 
We need to get out of service mode, and get into problem solving mode. It’ll come. I already see <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Vishal+Sikka">Vishal Sikka</a> steering his big boat into product orientation. I’m sure <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Wipro">Wipro</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=TCS">TCS</a> will follow. 
 
Do you buy into the Startup Bubble Idea? 
There are no bubbles, only pockets. In the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=enterprise+software">enterprise software</a> industry in the US, there are 78 Unicorns. Everybody decided to go on funding them as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=IPO">IPO</a> is very hard there. 
 
In the process, if 20-30% of them die, I don’t see a problem. If you want to call that a bubble, you may, but that’s a part of the natural evolution of any business. 
 
Valuation Bubbles 
Greed is human. You work between greed and fear. 
 
Investors are humans too, and they want money. Once everybody’s investing, you don’t want to be left behind, and so you invest. When everybody wants to invest for the same deal, valuations go up, and that’s what’s been going on. However, it has to self-correct. 
 
I won’t worry about it too much. It’s a good time to consolidate, sit back, review and those who can’t make it will go home. 
 
There will be a collective learning. Failures teach you something. You won’t make the same mistakes next time at least. That’s how you learn and grow, and I like it. 
 
VC-funded Startup Ecosystem 
We only get our money’s worth with the home run. 
 
We look at the thousand deals that come to us, and look at a hundred in all seriousness. Out of that we invest in ten, and ultimately invite one. 
 
When you go backwards, there is a very low probability of success in VCs. However, the ones who succeed bring all the goodness into the world. That’s why I’m such a believer. 
 
Big sectors other than E-Commerce 
Data Science, Artificial intelligence and Health Science. 
 
A lot of innovative and creative ideas are coming out of India. 
 
How do you foster innovation at a young age? 
Foster curiosity. 
 
There is a mindset in India that needs to change right from schooling. This change needs to take place significantly at a 6th, 8th and 12th grade level. 
 
We shouldn’t focus on rote learning. Nobody needs 2*2 tables; you have a calculator today for that. Just ask them to be curious and creative in their own way. 
 
Your vision for Mobile Computing 
It’ll become more intelligent. The question is what form it’ll take. 
 
The total computational power of a smartphone will far exceed that of the human brain. It’ll be able to do things that we can’t even imagine.

Exclusive: The ‘Father of Pentium
Processor’ Vinod Dham talks about Startups and where India is headed

San Francisco, Cyber-security firm CrowdStrike has revealed that suspected Russian <keyword id="11094" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hackers">hackers</keyword> who broke into a series of <keyword id="702959" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-government-agencies">US government agencies</keyword> and enterprises via compromising <keyword id="609247" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SolarWinds">SolarWinds</keyword> software, aimed to attack its network but failed to do so. At least 24 <keyword id="127567" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Big-companies">big companies</keyword> including tech giants like Intel, Cisco, VMware and Nvidia suffered part of the SolarWinds hack allegedly orchestrated by Russia-backed cybercriminals. The suspected Russian hackers installed a malware in the Orion software sold by the IT management company SolarWinds, and accessed sensitive data belonging to several US government agencies, at least one hospital and a university, the Wall Street Journal reported last week. In a blog post, CrowdStrike said it was alerted by Microsoft that the hackers had tried to read its emails using a Microsoft reseller's account "<keyword id="9380675" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="several-months">several months</keyword> ago." "Specifically, they identified a reseller's Microsoft Azure account used for managing CrowdStrike's Microsoft Office licenses was observed making abnormal calls to Microsoft cloud APIs during a 17-hour period several months ago," the company said. "There was an attempt to read email, which failed as confirmed by Microsoft. As part of our secure IT architecture, CrowdStrike does not use Office 365 email". CrowdStrike conducted a thorough review and found that it "suffered no impact". Earlier, US-based cybersecurity firm <keyword id="1560274" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="FireEye">FireEye</keyword> had admitted it was part of the massive SolarWinds attack. Russia has denied having any role in the hacking. Microsoft President <keyword id="194374" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Brad-Smith">Brad Smith</keyword> said this month that they have identified more than 40 customers who have been affected by nation-state hackers who installed malware in SolarWinds' Orion platform. The hacking group, known as APT29, or Cozy Bear, is behind the attack on FireEye, accessing its internal network and stealing hacking tools the company uses to test the networks belonging to its customers. Kunal Bahl, co-founder of Snapdeal, did not respond to TOI's query while an emailed questionnaire to Tata's office on Monday remained unanswered till the time of going to press on Tuesday. 
 
The 76-year-old, who transformed India's largest private sector conglomerate with a string of marquee global acquisitions, is expected to be a minority investor in his personal capacity in the e-tailer. TOI could not ascertain the exact stake Tata would hold in Snapdeal if and when the transaction is completed. 
 
While his holding is unlikely to be high, its real significance would lie in the buzz it would create for the four-year-old firm. Tata has always had in interest in technology; even so, the deal, if it goes through, would mark the ultimate coming together of the old and new guard. 
 
People close to Snapdeal said Tata had visited the firm's headquarters in Delhi about a month ago and addressed employees. 
 Tata could be boarding Snapdeal just when the online marketplace, which has crossed $1 billion in gross merchandise sale by value—second only to Flipkart—is busy fending off a challenge from online retail juggernaut <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> for No. 2 position in the domestic e-commerce market. 
 
The investment would be testimony to the growing interest of established business houses in India's burgeoning internet commerce, which is poised to hit $9 billion over the next two years, according to US venture capitalist Accel Partners. 
 The potential investment by Tata, who stepped down from his day-to-day responsibilities at the $100 billion conglomerate about two years ago, would be a huge, timely shot in the arm for Snapdeal, with both <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> and Amazon declaring open war for dominance of India's fast-growing e-commerce market which has attracted top dollars from financial investors. 
 
Bangalore-based Flipkart, the country's leading e-tailer with gross sales nearing $3 billion, last week raised $1 billion in funding mostly from existing investors led by Tiger Global, Naspers and Accel Partners. The Jeff Bezos-led Amazon responded a day later by announcing a $2 billion investment in what is becoming a hotly contested three-legged race. 
 Another Indian business tycoon, Wipro's Azim Premj, has laid bets on the Indian consumer internet story through his family office PremjiInvest by picking up minority stakes in <keyword id="319719" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Myntra">Myntra</keyword>, now merged with Flipkart, and Snapdeal. <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> co-founder <keyword id="6355623" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narayana-Murthy">Narayana Murthy</keyword> recently formed an e-commerce joint venture with Amazon through his private investment firm Catamaran Ventures. 
 
Other big Indian business houses with interests in offline retail like Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Retail and the Aditya Birla Group have now begun unfolding their e-commerce plans as an increasing number of Indians shop online, driven in large part by rising smartphone penetration. India's galloping internet user base is now estimated at over 240 million, raising the possibility of it emerging as the world's largest digital commerce market along with China. 
 
Snapdeal has already raised two rounds of funds so far this year, taking total capital raised to about $350 million at a valuation of a billion dollars. Its existing investors include San Jose- based eBay Inc, Singapore's Temasek, BlackRock, PremjiInvest, Intel, Nexus Venture Partners, NEA-IndoUS Venture Partners and Bessemer Venture Partners. 
 
Bahl and schoolmate, Rohit Bansal, both 32, started Snapdeal four years ago as a daily deals site, modelled on GroupOn, later changing it into an online marketplace for merchants to sell their products. Before Snapdeal, the Delhi duo founded Money Saver, a physical coupon book business that offered discounts to consumers across retail outlets. Bahl, who'd returned after graduating from Wharton, and Bansal, armed with an IIT-Delhi degree, later transitioned from a physical format to mobile couponing till the idea of starting a daily-deals site struck them in January 2010. 
 
Snapdeal says it sells about five million products across various categories like apparel, mobiles and electronics with over 25 million subscribers operating on a pure-play online marketplace model. Like Flipkart, it generates over 50% of its orders from mobile phones.

Tata May Invest In E-Tailer Snapdeal

A "best case scenario" would be approval before year end and a vaccine by year end, according to Pfizer. "In the third quarter of this year, we hope to get into the hospital setting with a drug that is given intravenously to patients hospitalised with COVID," John Burkhardt, Senior Vice President, Drug Safety Research and Development at Pfizer, said at a news conference in Connecticut Wednesday. "An interesting thing about this vaccine approach is that the mRNA is enclosed in a lipid nanoparticle, so you can imagine the complexity of that. At this site, we are looking at engineering that particle and analyses for it that will allow clinical trials as well as the manufacturing to occur," Burkhardt said. He promised Americans "safety will not be compromised" in vaccine development. "We are very optimistic", he said. Americans will receive the vaccine for free and the US government can acquire up to an additional 500 million doses. Preliminary data from studies have shown a good immune response from vaccinated patients, Pfizer scientists told reporters. Pfizer and BioNTech are evaluating at least four experimental vaccines, each of which represents a unique combination of messenger RNA (mRNA) format and target antigen. Pfizer received fast track status for two of four vaccine candidates last week based on preliminary data from ongoing Phase 1/2 studies in the United States and Germany. Explaining the nuts and bolts of the "fast track" label, Burkhardt said the new status allows straight line access to US health authorities. "You don't sit around and write a 100 page document, send it for review, wait 45 days for the outcome. You can be on the telephone in real time," Burkhardt said. Pfizer said an oral treatment for COVID-19 patients is also on its longlist. Meanwhile, Pfizer hopes to have antiviral medication ready for clinical trials in August or September. Also next week, a vaccine created by the National Institutes of Health and Moderna Inc. is ready to begin final-stage testing in a study of 30,000 people.
