The company added 30,000 people to its roster between July to September. Wipro to promote 80% of its eligible staff in the next three months — increments will be in line with last year

Still, he needs to set out indicative timelines for quantified goals, according to Nirmal Bang. “Executing on these priorities will entail a set of changes that will be known over the coming months. After a strong and partly buyback-fuelled rally in the stock price, upsides will be modest,” added Kotak Institutional Equities in its report. Simply put, Wipro’s valuation may have become a little expensive over the past month. Nonetheless, analysts expect to see quicker deals, more acquisitions and traction in digital revenues for Wipro even as they maintain caution. “We await further evidence of execution of Wipro’s refreshed strategy and a successful turnaround from its growth struggles over the past decade before turning more constructive on the stock,” said Motilal Oswal Securities. Wipro’s share price dips by over 6% after earnings — analysts believe it will take a while to catch up to TCS and HCL Technologies

The demand for cloud computing and cybersecurity services has boosted both IT companies’ earnings. But despite the strong show, they have seen their share prices fall a day after earnings. While Infosys fell by as over 5%, Wipro dropped by nearly 7%. One of the key concerns of IT employees for leaving an organisation is muted growth in increments followed by poor employee benefits, rewards, digital skilling and so on, shows a ‘compensation benchmarking survey’ by Deloitte India and software firms’ lobby NASSCOM. The average increments for the technology services sector in India dropped from 9.5% in 2019 to 5.2% in 2020, which later increased to 8.8% in 2021 due to higher attrition rate. India’s techies are leaving IT firms in hordes — Here’s why

Neither has it decided to quit in a hurry like <keyword id="6359128" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Redbus">redBus</keyword>.in did last year. <keyword id="2049136" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indias-largest-bus-ticketing-firm">India’s largest bus ticketing firm</keyword> was acquired by the <keyword id="1643008" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ibibo-Group">ibibo Group</keyword> for around $125 million but the sale cut short a successful <keyword id="530125" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="entrepreneurial-journey">entrepreneurial journey</keyword> that could have become a $500 million business in terms of revenue and could have achieved a $1 billion valuation. 
 As for Jabong, the very fact that it is backed by Rocket Internet may tell the industry insiders a different story. Rocket is known in the market for its fast and furious build-and-sell business module, and the start-ups are essentially replicas of successful US businesses. But the kind of funding Jabong is raising right now shows that the company is in no hurry to down the shutters in India even though two of its four co-founders have recently left the company. Jabong started its India operations in 2012 and competes with key e-com players such as Flipkart, Myntra, <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> and <keyword id="6354743" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Amazon-India">Amazon India</keyword>, among others. 
 
Only <keyword id="2049143" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Core-expertise">core expertise</keyword> matters Internet giant <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> has already given us a case in point when it sold <keyword id="487941" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Motorola-Mobility">Motorola Mobility</keyword> to Lenovo for $2.91 billion, less than two years after paying $12.5 billion to acquire it. The deal is not a total financial loss as Google has managed to keep patents worth billions of dollars and expects to turn Lenovo into a manufacturing unit for its <keyword id="6355645" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="android">Android</keyword> OS. But selling <keyword id="11148" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Motorola">Motorola</keyword> is a sure indication that Google should have focused more on its <keyword id="1430489" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Core-Competencies">core competencies</keyword> – search, software and selling ads – instead of developing hardware. 
 You will find a similar case here as Jabong has reportedly sold its <keyword id="2049146" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="logistics-arm">logistics arm</keyword> <keyword id="2049145" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="JaVAS">JaVAS</keyword> (Jabong Value Added Services) to Gurgaon-based QuickDel Logistics as part of its business restructuring and funding exercise. Jabong <keyword id="170488" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="co-founder">co-founder</keyword> <keyword id="536011" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Praveen-Sinha">Praveen Sinha</keyword> has also confirmed to the media that JaVAS is now an independent entity. 
 However, that brings us back to the basic question. Should companies try and provide end-to-end solutions to ensure a complete customer experience or should they focus on core competencies and leave the rest to the experts in those fields? We particularly raise this question as many Indian e-commerce firms are currently focusing on <keyword id="2049154" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Proprietary-payment-gateways">proprietary payment gateways</keyword> and customised logistics services in a bid to propel their services to the next level. However, such services can actually make you lose money unless a company is catering to a customer base as vast as <keyword id="6357395" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="eBay">eBay</keyword> or Amazon. 
 After JaVAS, the writing is definitely on the wall. The bells and whistles can always come in later, but the key focus must be core competencies. Of late, even <keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword> seems to be falling in this trap – its newest hardware products have ‘n’ number of <keyword id="2049161" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Incremental-features">incremental features</keyword> but real innovations seem to be eluding the iconic company. 
 
Investors showing better <keyword id="170907" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="risk-appetite">risk appetite</keyword> India’s e-commerce market is projected to grow sevenfold to $22 billion in the next five years, and investors, both national and global, want to have a piece of the pie. According to <keyword id="1981" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Rahul-Khanna">Rahul Khanna</keyword>, managing director of the <keyword id="6357097" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="venture-capital">venture capital</keyword> firm <keyword id="218905" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Canaan-Partners">Canaan Partners</keyword> (India), e-commerce players in India (and everywhere else for that matter) require very deep pockets to scale up to the level of breaking even and hitting profitability. Consequently, <keyword id="2049171" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Follow-on-rounds">follow-on rounds</keyword> are extremely crucial for sustainable growth. Now that big institutional investors like PremjiInvest and UK-based development <keyword id="25455" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="finance">finance</keyword> institution CDC Group are entering the arena, the much-needed <keyword id="2000080" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Cash-burning">cash burning</keyword> is sure to propel growth to the desired level. 
 “E-commerce is fast maturing in India and that’s the main reason <keyword id="363248" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Global-Investments">global investments</keyword> are flowing in,” says another analyst. “When big players like Amazon show interest (the e-commerce giant has reportedly approached Myntra), investors are quick to sense the tremendous <keyword id="452394" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="growth-potential">growth potential</keyword> lying here,” she adds. 
 
Forget the buzz you are creating; it’s result time now Analysts, who have followed the course of events over the past few weeks, also point out another interesting trend. Be it Myntra or Jabong or other up-and-coming e-commerce businesses, it’s their <keyword id="2049173" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Growth-quotient">growth quotient</keyword> that has attracted <keyword id="2049174" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Big-funding">big funding</keyword>. In other words, start-ups who are delivering in a big way will get the valuable <keyword id="2049175" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Growth-dollars">growth dollars</keyword> as investors are now looking beyond the buzz and focusing on <keyword id="1730239" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="business-fundamentals">business fundamentals</keyword> and results. 
 Companies must have the numbers – in terms of customer base, <keyword id="169826" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="growth-figures">growth figures</keyword> and brand leadership – to justify the big money they are raising. For instance, Myntra expects to more than double its <keyword id="657194" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="gross-sales">gross sales</keyword> to over $250 million by March 2015 and the fashion e-tailer’s <keyword id="2049176" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Monthly-gross-sales">monthly gross sales</keyword> could touch $20-25 million by April this year. Myntra is expected to end the current fiscal with more than $100 million in gross sales and it is targeting $1 billion in <keyword id="6399113" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="GMV">GMV</keyword> by 2016-2017. Flipkart, which raised $360 million last year at a valuation of about $1.6 billion, is also projecting a GMV of $1 billion by 2015. 
 Jabong, too, has aggressive growth plans and the latest round will be used to strengthen its <keyword id="2049177" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Supply-chain-infrastructure">supply chain infrastructure</keyword> and enhance its <keyword id="2049178" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Technology-platform">technology platform</keyword>. According to industry sources, Jabong might have generated <keyword id="2049180" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gross-merchandise-sales">gross merchandise sales</keyword> of $100-150 million for the fiscal 2012-13. Other key investments in the Indian e-commerce space since 2013 included online marketplace Snapdeal raising about Rs 300 crore and baby care portal <keyword id="1615917" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="FirstCry">Firstcry</keyword> bagging Rs 92 crore. 
 
Inventory, <keyword id="6630005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="private-labels">private labels</keyword> are adding value 
With the lone exception of Snapdeal that runs a 100% marketplace, most of the big e-commerce entities in India are flourishing on a hybrid model – a strategic mix of inventory, private label and marketplace. In fact, Jabong has been doing all three for some time now, although a bit discreetly, and it could be now pushing hard to extract every penny from each of these categories. 
 
Myntra, on the other hand, focuses on both inventory and private label, with the share of private labels rising rapidly. A couple of years ago, the e-tailer acquired Exclusively.in Inc., the company behind the private label brand Shersingh.com and the fashion site Exclusively.in, in a cash-cum-equity deal. Myntra is reportedly eyeing more private labels to add to its portfolio as the margins are pretty high in this segment and add substantially to the profits. 
 
Bottom line: Is it a <keyword id="2049185" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Volatile-situation">volatile situation</keyword>? In one of her latest blogs in <keyword id="6359301" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Entrepreneur">Entrepreneur</keyword>.com, entrepreneur-writer Erika Trautman has nicely summed it up. “No matter how great the idea, if your start-up doesn’t create hard and fast results with analytics, targeted business solutions and mobile integration, it won’t survive in 2014. Launching a start-up can’t just be about how cool your product is. No business can subsist off just buzz and Press. This year, start-ups must focus on business fundamentals and start emphasising partnerships that generate results.”

Last year, Kurien received a salary package of $1.5 million. 
 
Meanwhile, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=azim+premji&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Azim Premji</a> took home $327,993 as annual package but this is minus the earnings from his shareholding.

 Wipro, in its filing, stated that <keyword id="6419840" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Azim-Premji">Azim Premji</keyword> was paid a commission at the rate of 0.3% on incremental net profits of Wipro Limited over previous year until July 30, 2015 and at the rate of 0.5% on incremental net profits of Wipro Limited over previous year from July 31, 2015, computed based on the method approved by the Board Governance, Nomination and Compensation Committee and in accordance with the provisions of the Companies Act, 2013. 
 
Apart from Neemuchwala, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=TCS&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">TCS CEO N Chandrasekaran</a> got Rs 25.6 crore as annual package and Rs 10 crore more as a part of one-time special bonus.

Wipro’s Abidali Neemuchwala receives $1.8 million as salary

In a bid to address evolving customer needs in a rapidly changing technology landscape, India’s third largest software exporter, <keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword>, overhauled its internal training framework and launched technical programmes over the past one year. 
 
The company is re-skilling its staff in newer areas of technology, especially digital, with a focus on commoditised service lines. 
 
Wipro CEO TK Kurien, who undertook the revamping of the framework, also wants to create a leaner and multi-skilled taskforce. 
For this, Wipro also launched at least three technical training programmes over the past year. 
 
The three new programmes - ACME (All-round Capability Model of Excellence), UpScale and Cutting Edge - are part of a drive to skill in multiple areas, in contrast to the past in which impetus was mostly on learning one skill well. 
 
Wipro's head of talent transformation Vishwas Santurkar told Economic Times that ACME had five dimensions of skills. “Technology is one obviously. Second is domain. The third dimension is functional areas. The quality processes, especially with Agile methodology coming in, the Agile methodologies and those areas is a fourth dimension which we feel is very important for an employee to learn. And the fifth is behavioural skills," Santurkar, a vice president at Wipro, told the financial daily. 
 Wipro's efforts comes at a time when its rivals like <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> are also revamping training framework to re-skill its employees on a large scale so that top talent is identified and separated from the rest to work on the toughest and most challenging new-age customer projects. 
 
During a meeting with analysts in March, Kurien had informed that the company was putting a new incentive scheme in place, under which incentives would be linked to incremental revenue and would also make it compulsory for account managers to cross-sell at least three of the company's five service offerings for them to earn variable pay. 
 
Meanwhile, another programme-The Upscale- was launched to lay emphasis on learning new skills, in addition to an employee's existing area of specialisation. 
 
"UpScale looks at what are the surround skills in your core skill area which an employee can take up. And the whole idea was that you have one core skill in which you have deep knowledge. On top of that, you take up another two skills," Santurkar told ET. 
 
The third programme, Cutting Edge, is a new digital strategy under which company's top technical talent and highly skilled programmers are identified and will be rewarded and incentivised differently from the rest of the organisation. 
 
"Cutting Edge is meant for seasoned developers. It is by invitation. People can't just get into the programme. People have to nominate themselves. And then we evaluate what the person has done and whether they have the ability to get into a skill like this," said Santurkar. 
 
As India’s traditional IT Fortune 500 customers are being challenged by digital firms like Amazon and Facebook, they are undertaking large-scale technology transformations. 
 
Customers such as retailer Target are pressurising vendors such as Infosys and Wipro, and asking for highly-skilled technical staff that is capable of solving complex, new-age technology problems. 
 
"I think we are facing the highest levels of disruption in our history. If we don't change and adapt, we won't be around a few years from now," said Navneet Kapoor, managing director of Target India in a recent interview. 
 
Meanwhile, Santurkar told ET that the Cutting Edge programme would be scaled up further this year as part of Wipro's digital push. Other new training initiatives that Wipro has created are Digital Architecture Academy and also a separate academy that focuses on Open Source. 
 
"The objective of the Digital Architecture Academy, is to train the existing architects on the digital technologies and how to architect systems for the digital world. Be it cloud, or be it analytics, any of these areas," Santurkar told ET.

Wipro is changing everything. Know how

This March <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Wipro">Wipro</a> appointed <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Abid+Ali+Neemuchwala">Abid Ali Neemuchwala</a> as the Chief Operating Officer. He is also seen as successor to current CEO <keyword id="534477" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="TK-Kurien">TK Kurien</keyword>. However, this July <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=July+Kurien">Kurien</a> said, “my term is not coming up for renewal, it's ending and that's a theoretical ending." 
 
Neemuchwala recently spoke to the media, the first time after his appointment. 
 
You were a rising star at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=TCS">TCS</a> and people there still remember you fondly. It's been quite a journey for you over the past six months since you left <keyword id="6357150" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="TCS">TCS</keyword>. And here at <keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword>, you are widely seen as the next guy to take over the top job. Do you have any ambitions on that front? 
 
(Laughs) Number one: the position is not vacant. We have a great leader in TK. The decision is not mine -- it is for the board to decide whenever that opportunity arrives. But for now I think I've got my role cut out as the chief operating officer to do some very exciting stuff which I'm busy doing. 
 
What have been some of your learnings from TCS that you are trying to replicate at Wipro? 
 
The thing that I would always say is that at CS I have learned leadership, I've learned working with bright people and I see the same bright people here and I have the opportunity to execute on my leadership.....I have developed a good connect here at Wipro, that is my style of engaging with people. I regularly blog within the organization and I get hundreds of responses. And that's a level of energy that gets created, that's the power of a 150,000 people that is delivering into the changes that we are bringing. 
 
How has it been interacting with Mr. Premji? Tell us a little about your first few interactions with Mr. Premji since you came on board. 
 
Of course, he (Premji) is a legend in the industry. Having the opportunity to work for him and with him is a sheer pleasure. Personality who is very caring, who is an epitome of corporate governance. In some of the interactions with him, there is hardly any operational discussions that I would have with him, but conversations around the industry, the people, around the strategy and the governance aspects are the ones that I enjoy having with him and there is a lot to learn, which I continue to learn. 
 
What is Mr. Premji's vision for Wipro over the next few years? 
 
I think it's part of the company's strategy -- so he's fully behind the articulated strategy. 
 
As far as talent is concerned, how big a challenge is it in terms of getting quality? We've heard most CEOs in the industry talking about the dearth of good talent here. 
 
Great question. The way Wipro is wired, we started when there was no talent in India. One of our competitive differentiation is the ability to absorb raw talent, train and transform. And we continue to do that. In fact, we're doing it more now than we were ever before. That has been our strength. Having said that, the need for talent transformation is much higher today -- some of the historic work that was happening is all getting automated. The kind of talent that is required in the digital era, you need Unicorns who understand the domain, the technology, the architecture, etc -- and some of us are doing it ourselves for that matter. Also, the intensity of the customer's domain and the ability to consult with the customer compared to just doing the job for the customer is changing significantly...for that we are training our people. We also know we don't have all the skills. So, we are doing some focused acquisitions. For example, our Designit acquisition. 
 
What are some of the gaps that you're trying to plug now through acquisitions, things that Wipro lacks at present? 
 
So, there are two areas -- one area is the creative side, the design side of things. That is one kind of talent we are bringing in. The other kind of talent from the technology side is people who are able to integrate solutions. Some of the hiring I've done myself is people who have experience of integrating solutions. Rather than delivering individual levers of those solutions. The third area is domain talent. Because domain consulting is becoming large. 
 
What are some of the big changes you have tried to effect since you took over? 
 
As you know I'm focusing on what we call 'run the business', the core of our business, along with the emerging markets, service lines, the delivery teams, the business operations -- clearly, as you've been following, there are opportunities for us to do better in terms of growth and in terms of the operating margins. So I think those will be the big signals -- everything else just flows through this. But I think there are opportunities for us to be able to respond faster to the market. So, I'm driving what I call 'Simplification' within the organization -- just enables us to be more responsive to our customers, to our employees, to our business partners, everybody. The second and more widespread change I'm bringing about is around the delivery realignment, which enables us to do a lot of things. It enables us to transform our talent as the industry is changing to become more relevant to customers, going into the future. It enables us to do better mining by making the right investments in the customers. Our per customer revenue has been lagging, account mining has been a challenge -- so that delivers towards that. The fourth change that I've brought about is creating an integrated services and solutions group with a team of experts. Historically Wipro has always been a very strong engineering organization and that has always worked well for us. One of the things that has also happened is by individual service lines -- now the future of the industry is about going to the customer and solving the customer's problems. Now if it takes five of your offerings or service lines or practices to come together to do it, you need to do it internally, in the back office. I say we are providing a complete meal service to our customer rather than saying I will serve you vegetable or daal. So this organization is mentoring a larger organization and helping them to transform, both in existing accounts where we can cross-sell better and in deals where we can shape the demand tuned more to the future of the industry. 
 
What are some of the areas where you are starting to see results, based on some of the steps you've taken since coming on board? 
 
It's too early right now because in the 130 days I've been here, the first 60 days I just absorbed and understood and initiated and some of the changes started going live from the first of August. So I think we should give it some more time. But I think the results expected are along the same lines that I talked about -- better cross-sell, better operational efficiencies, better engagement with clients in the newer technology areas, larger ticket sizes for our customers, etc. 
 
The last 5 years have been challenging for Wipro with lots of ups and downs and general lack of consistency. How do you see that changing? 
 
Without giving an exact timeline, some of the low hanging fruits should come in the short term. I think most of the foundational aspects that I'm putting in place would deliver results in the medium term. 
 
Industry-leading numbers? 
 
Both on the growth and the operating margins. 
 
Why has it been such a big challenge for Wipro to get any sort of momentum in performance? 
 
The hunting side of our business, acquiring new logos, new deals -- I think we're doing a phenomenal job. I think if you look at the construct of our business, there is less amount of annuity business that we have compared to some of our competitors. We have a higher amount of project business that gets over. So the incremental revenue and the deal wins that we have are in line with others in the industry. But the amount of refurbishment we have to do with our business because of our proportion of annuity business creates a higher need for new business for us compared to the industry.

Neemuchwala: Azim Premji is behind Wipro’s articulated strategy

Bangalore-based IT firm <keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword> Ltd’s chairman <keyword id="6419840" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Azim-Premji">Azim Premji</keyword> and CEO <keyword id="534477" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="TK-Kurien">TK Kurien</keyword> received hefty raises in spite of the company lagging in growth during FY 2013-14. 
 
According to the former IT bellwether’s regulatory filling made on May 19 to the US Security and Exchange Commission, billionaire chairman Azim Premji's annual compensation, which includes salary and benefits, more than doubled to $1.71 million in fiscal 2012-2013, up from $733,827 in fiscal 2012-2013. 
 
Premji's pay doubled mainly on account of a boost in variable pay component. He also received an additional 0.3% commission, calculated on the firm's incremental net profits over the previous year. 
 
Wipro CEO TK Kurien's salary for the first time crossed the million-dollar mark. His compensation grew to $1.1 million by the end of March this year, from $888,228 in fiscal year 2012-2013. 
 
This reward to Kurien, who took over the job in 2011, is also a sign that the IT company continued to back his turnaround plans. 
 The reward given to Kurien comes days after <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> gave a good compensation to president BG Srinivas with a pay package of $1.28 million. Srinivas is widely seen as a top contender to become the company CEO after <keyword id="385878" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="SD-Shibulal">SD Shibulal</keyword> expressed his desire to step down in March 2015. 
 
The annual salaries of Premji and Kurien, however, do not include their dividend earnings from shareholding in Wipro.

Wipro’s Premji, Kurien Get Hefty Salary Hike

BANGALORE: India has become a major ingredient in <keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword>’s secret sauce, and the scale may surprise many. It is estimated that a third of the $171-billion company’s engineering staff is Indian, and that a large and increasing proportion of its enterprise software, service and support work is done by Indian IT vendors. 
 Apple filed 1,750 H-1B applications during the 10-year period 2001 to 2010, but the number increased sharply to 2,800 during 2011-13. US-based HfS Research that compiled the data says the majority of the H-1Bs would be Indians, indicating that the iPhone and <keyword id="101239" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="iPad">iPad</keyword> maker’s dependence on Indian engineers has risen significantly in recent years. 
 
"About one-third of Apple’s engineering headcount consists of Indians who are either on H-1B or on Green Card," said Pareekh Jain, principal analyst at HfS Research. 
 
HfS arrives at that conclusion looking at figures Apple disclosed in 2012, when it said it had 47,000 people working directly for it in the US, of which 7,700 were customer support operators, and 27,350 worked retail in Apple Stores, leaving about 12,000 as engineers, designers, marketers and other white-collar tech product workers. 
 
HfS Research also finds that Apple works with at least five India-based IT vendors — including four large firms and one small firm — and the scope of the work they do has been rising. 
 
 
 
"Apple’s outsourcing strategy can be described in three words as ‘outsourcing for growth’. The scope of outsourcing work has been enlarged in the last two or three years. From 2013, Apple has dedicated IT outsourcing vendor managers based out of Bangalore who are acting as the bridge between Apple’s IT managers and India based IT vendors," said Jain. 
 HfS Research declined to name the IT vendors. TCS, <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> and <keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword> are known to do work for Apple. Apple is seen to be among Infosys’ top 10 clients. Two years ago, Infosys rented a 1.4-lakh sqft office space near its headquarters in Electronics City to house employees who would work exclusively for Apple. The building had a capacity to initially house 1,400 people. Apple engages with Indian IT players for application development &amp; maintenance, business intelligence &amp; data-warehousing, data analytics applications, enterprise application integration and ERP implementation. Indian vendors also provide software support for development and maintenance of Apple retail stores, specific work for iTunes, <keyword id="667357" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="iCloud">iCloud</keyword>, internal applications of release management, job search portals, and porting of web applications to <keyword id="75489" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="IOS">iOS</keyword> mobile. 
 
 
 
"The other aspect of Apple’s outsourcing strategy is multi-sourcing, with each IT vendor having some strong focus in areas like channels, CRM, supply chain, marketing and finance, and some overlap," Jain said. 
 
Apple did not respond to a mail TOI sent on Friday seeking confirmation of the data. That was perhaps to be expected from a company regarded as among the most secretive in the world. 
 
In 2006, Apple had leased space in Bangalore to establish a technical support centre with 3,000 people. But within months the company abandoned the plan following an outcry from customers casting doubts on India’s ability to service and support Apple’s high-quality products. But in the following years, Apple was clearly convinced it could not do without India and found other ways to use the country’s talent. 
 
More recently, incremental work coming from Apple has increased substantially as the volumes and complexity of Apple’s supply chain has increased. Apple, whose market valuation is now stands at $585 billion, sold 35.2 million iPhones in the June quarter, a growth of 12.7% compared to the same period last year. Apple said demand from BRIC economies - Brazil, Russia, India and China - spurred iPhone sales. 
 
"Its data warehousing applications have petabytes of data. Its product lines, volumes and need for analytics have increased. Also, Apple has acquired more than 30 firms in the last three years whose systems and applications need migration and integration to Apple’s applications. All this is translating into additional work for IT vendors," Jain said.

* Human Resources Management System, SAP Business Objects and SAP LO (Logistics) 
 
* Apple filed 1,750 H-1B applications during the ten year period 2001 to 2010, but the number increased sharply to 2,800 during 2011-13.
