Pune, May 10 () IT Services firm Tech Mahindra hasbeen issued a notice by the office of the Labour Commissioner,Pune, in Maharashtra on a complaint that the company hadreduced salaries of its employees to maintain "profitability'in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.A similar notice was issued earlier this month toanother IT firm, Wipro Technologies Ltd, on a complaintalleging that the firm was benching its employees.National Information Technology Employees Senate(NITES), an organisation working for the welfare and benefitsof employees in IT industry, had approached the LabourCommissioner's Office, claiming that they have receivedcomplaints from employees of Tech Mahindra, Pune, regardingthe reduction in salaries to maintain the "profitability ofthe business" under the COVID-19 pandemic."The company had also notified its employees throughan email on May 6 that the shift allowance, which is betweenRs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 per employee, will be stopped from May1," the complaint letter from NITES reads.The application further claimed that because of thisdecision, payment of over 13,000 employees of Tech Mahindra isreduced.The NITES sought appropriate legal action against TechMahindra stating that the firm has violated the Maharashtragovernment's directions, rules and regulations.In a notice issued on the same date, officials in theLabour Commissioner's Office directed the firm to go throughthe state government's resolution dated March 31, 2020, andtake appropriate steps and release the salaries for March andApril and to inform the labour commissioner's office.The notice, signed by Nikhil Walke, Assistant LabourCommissioner, asked the firm not to terminate employees orreduce the salaries, and further stated that otherwise legalaction will be taken.Tech Mahindra Spokesperson said, "The shift allowancepaid for hardship due to travel to work at odd hours and otherout of pocket expenses, continues to be paid to all TechMahindra associates, who are coming to the office or are atclient locations as per policy."Our focus remains to ensure the well-being of ourassociates, customers and partner eco-system while maintainingbusiness continuity".Meanwhile, in its notice dated May 1 to WiproTechnologies Ltd on an NITES complaint that the company wasbenching its employees, the Pune Labour Commissioner Officeasked the IT firm to respond and not terminate any employees.Harpreet Saluja, general secretary, NITES, said theyhad approached the labour commissioner's office after theyreceived complaints from employees of WIPRO BPO, located inHinjewadi regarding employees being put on the bench tomaintain profitability."The company also notified the employees on April 23that they are on the bench with immediate effect. Because ofthis (the decision of the company) the pay and jobs of morethan 300 employees are at risk," the complaint reads.A statement from Wipro Limited stated that thespeculation related to the workforce is unfounded and has nobasis."Wipro categorically denies these rumours. There areno salary cuts for employees who are in between projects andare awaiting new assignments. Also, the company wants toreiterate that there are no retrenchment plans. Wipro haswell-defined policies and people practices in place to takecare of its employees," the statement reads.It further stated that Wipro is yet to receive anycommunication from the Labour Department.The company will present the facts before thedepartment, as and when required. It also maintained a ‘sell’ rating on the stock with a target price of ₹1,260 per share. Adding to it, more employees are leaving Tech Mahindra than TCS and Wipro in an industry that is struggling with a high attrition rate. Wipro outshines TCS, Infosys and others with a 31% jump in share price over the last two months

"The career of thousands of students like me is at stake. We cleared the Wipro exam in 2021. We rejected offers from other companies. But, it's been one year and we are still not onboarded. Wipro is either delaying or rejecting without any clarification," fresher Nithin said. "After Wipro, we have received complaints from employees of various IT companies regarding delay in onboarding. Unfortunately the CEOs bragging about work ethics and transparency are left with no humanity." "If the workers are organised, all they have to do is to put their hands in their pockets and they have got the capitalist class whipped," NITES asserted. IT firms should be held accountable for endangering the professional futures of the employees and trainees. Wipro has stated that it will honour all offer letters. However, experts, allaying fears of recession in US and Europe affecting IT industry in India, state that the trend is not new. They say since China is being hit post Corona period, India could be more resilient. The present trend could be the result of workability of pipeline projects. If pipeline projects are getting affected for various reasons, the companies will strategise their moves by holding new recruitments or withdrawing offers. "This trend is an old one and the situation is projected like it is the end of IT industry which is wrong. The focus is on adopting to new technology, which is being focussed by all major tech companies. They are doing best prepare work force for new challenges," an expert said. <ul><li>Among Indian IT companies in the US nearly 80,000 employees are there on visas with the majority using the coveted H-1B. </li><li>TCS has the largest number of employees in the US within Indian IT services companies but only 40% are on the H-1B visa. </li><li>Tech Mahindra and Cognizant half a great dependency with nearly of their US staff on H-1B. </li></ul>In a bid to protect American jobs, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on June 22 introducing restrictions on new visa applications — including the IT sector’s coveted H-1B visa. There are currently 79,649 Indians working with Indian IT companies — including Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Cognizant, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, <keyword id="30331" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="HCL-Technologies">HCL Technologies</keyword> and Wipro — on visas in the US. While the new visa restrictions don’t impact people who are existing visa holders, Japanese brokerage firm Nomura points out that it could lead to a further increase in the rejection rates of renewals. On the total strength, only 40% are on visa; the rest are local employees. Within those who are in the US on a visa, 85% are on an H-1B visa — the others are on L-1 visas. Like TCS, Infosys too only has 40% visa holders as US staff. Tech Mahindra and Cognizant are the only two companies with half of their employees in the US on visas. ever buyout by the Bengaluru-based company. The shares of Wipro have led the IT pack ever since the new chief executive officer (CEO) Thierry Delaporte took charge in June last year. The company made about $2 billion last year from IT services and if Capco delivers the same amount of revenue as it did last year, it could add another $700 million to Wipro’s topline. That’s a 35% bump up a year straight away. Expectations are built up in the stock that has gained about 30% since the Capco deal was announced in early March, and closed in April. <div type="image" title="Wirpo stock price chart" height="900" width="1200" msid="84201479" hostid="261"></div> There is also a lot of apprehension. “The execution risk is further aggravated by a weak growth performance from Capco over the last two years – even after adjusting for the drag due to COVID-19,” said Motilal Oswal in its report dated March 4. “We’re guiding revenue growth of 2% to 4% in the first quarter, outside of Capco and Ampion,” Delaporte had said during the earnings call in April. Wipro has acquired Ampion, an Australia-based provider of cyber security, devops and quality engineering services. The move will strengthen its commitment towards clients and stakeholders in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ). The acquisition will close in the quarter ending June 30, 2021. Tech Mahindra has bought up 70% stake to acquire the leading supplier of consultancy and labelling artwork solutions to the global pharmaceutical industry. But the cumulatively strength of the industry to stay in the green has more to do with the hopes of a stronger dollar. Like India, the US is currently caught in the conundrum of chasing growth and rising prices. Investors in the US and Europe are on an earning streak, parking their funds in government securities at near-zero interest rates and making even more in emerging markets like India. But these low interest rates are not likely to last forever. The <keyword id="84979" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="European-Central-Bank">European Central Bank</keyword> (ECB) already announced last week that it would start purchasing bonds at a ‘significantly higher pace’ over the next three months in an attempt to get ahead of any potential inflation pressures in the coming months. The flip side of getting a big stimulus US President Joe Biden just signed the country’s $1.9 trillion stimulus package into law and is hoping that will help drive growth. But, where there is growth, there is also inflation. In order to counter the inflation, the central bank needs to step in and increase the interest rates. <div type="image" title="Copy of india&amp;#39;s economic growth" msid="81511559" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;US Consumer Price Index&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> If the Federal Reserve increases interest rates, a stronger dollar would be to the benefit of IT services companies that earn mostly in foreign currency. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), for instance, earns more than half of its revenue in dollars as an exporter of software services. The odds of an interest rate hike in the US are rising The US Federal Reserve’s Chair <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/world-news/despite-us-economic-recovery-federal-reserve-firm-on-keeping-interest-rates-low-101615696984892-amp.html">Jerome Powell</a> has been clear that if it comes to choosing between growth and inflation, the goal is to see more people back at work. “Today, we’re still a long way from our goals of maximum employment and inflation averaging 2% over time,” he said during the Wall Street Journal Jobs Summit on March 4. While the Fed is positive that it won’t need to step in and adjust interest rates before 2023, some feel that may be too optimistic a point of view. “Very low interest rates, which have held down debt service costs, will eventually rise despite the Federal Reserve’s commitment to an extended period of extremely accommodative monetary policy,” said global agency <a href="https://www.fitchratings.com/research/sovereigns/us-stimulus-will-boost-growth-at-cost-of-higher-deficits-debt-09-03-2021">Fitch Ratings. </a> This is supported by the fact that Fed Funds Futures — where investors can purchase funds in advance at prices they expect to see in the future — are beginning to signal that the US’ central bank could begin increasing rates in 2022. According to DataTrek co-founder <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/stock-market/news/us-stocks-are-on-the-verge-of-a-correction-as-interest-rates-begin-to-rise-datatrek-says/articleshow/81094483.cms">Nicholas Colas</a>, the odds of the Federal Reserve shifting its policy stance next year has gone from 2% to anywhere between 5% to 10%. That doesn’t necessarily mean that inflation is on the move, but the trend is “clearly not our friend.” “This means inflation is likely to be a risk well into 2022. I suspect it might even be high enough that the Fed will be seriously considering rate hikes by early 2022,” said <a href="https://www.marketwatch.com/story/bond-investors-will-have-a-stormy-2021-and-the-fed-might-consider-hiking-rates-by-early-2022-but-hyperinflation-nope-11614610084">Cullen Roche</a>, founder of the Orcam Financial Group. Good news of Indian IT services’ companies The rate hike in the US may lead to outflow of dollars from India, and make the rupee weaker, which will, in turn make imported commodities like crude oil more expensive and thereby, hurt a whole lot of businesses. Only for select companies like the software exporters, a stronger dollar will lead to better earnings in rupee terms.
