Walmart-owned Flipkart will undertake a buyback employee <keyword id="6368159" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="stock">stock</keyword> options worth about Rs 600 crore, according to sources. Earlier in the day, Flipkart announced raising $3.6 billion (about Rs 26,805.6 crore) in funding from a clutch of investors that valued the e-commerce major at $37.6 billion (about Rs 2.79 lakh crore). In an e-mail to employees, Flipkart group chief executive officer <keyword id="6379357" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="kalyan-krishnamurthy">Kalyan Krishnamurthy</keyword> lauded the critical role played by the staff in reaching this milestone. "It has always been our endeavour to provide our employees with an opportunity to liquidate their vested options regularly. This year, we are pleased to announce a buyback of 5 per cent of the past three years' vested options. With this landmark event for us, I am happy to share that we are offering our employees an additional buyback of 5 per cent of all vested options as we stay committed to wealth creation for you," he said. While the e-mail did not provide additional details, sources said the employee stock options buyback would entail a spending of about Rs 600 crore, and employees will be able to liquidate up to 10 per cent of their vested shares depending on the individual's holding pattern. They added that about 6,000 people are expected to benefit from the buyback. The company confirmed the development but did not disclose any details. Employees are granted options based on their tenure, performance, and contributions to the company. In his e-mail, Krishnamurthy said the fund infusion received by Flipkart is "one of the most significant investments in the digital commerce ecosystem in India, reflecting the opportunity for digital commerce in India and the confidence of investors in our ability to address this potential". "As we continue to focus on meeting the needs of our customers, we will make several investments across people, technology, supply chain, and infrastructure, and continue to strengthen and build on key categories and business opportunities," he added. Krishnamurthy emphasised that the company must sustain its commitment to its existing customers and introduce the value proposition of digital commerce to the next 200 million Indians, ensuring that it innovates to create value and experiences for them. "Through our partnerships with ecosystem players, not only do we need to accelerate growth for them, but we must also direct our efforts to enable inclusive growth for lakhs small and medium businesses who have an opportunity to benefit from the potential of digital commerce in India," he added. E-commerce platform Flipkart to buyback employee stock options worth ₹600 crore, say sources

The round of funding was led by Singapore-based GIC, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP investments), Softbank Vision Fund 2 and Walmart. DisruptAD, Qatar Investment Authority, Khazanah Nasional Berhad, Tencent, Willoughby Capital, Antara Capital, Franklin Templeton and Tiger Global also participated in this mega-investment round, the company said in a statement on Monday. Kalyan Krishnamurthy, chief executive officer of Flipkart, said in a statement that Flipkart will “focus on accelerating growth of millions of small and medium Indian businesses, including kiranas [mom and pop stores].” Parent company Walmart is expected to hold about 74% to 75% stake in the ecommerce giant after this round. Walmart had acquired 77% stake in Flipkart back in 2018, giving exits to founders Binny and Sachin Bansal, subsequently. The acquisition had given a partial or complete exit to several other marquee investors as well, including Tiger Global, SoftBank, Naspers and Accel among others. Tiger Global and SoftBank were two of the biggest beneficiaries of the Flipkart acquisition. Tiger Global clocked <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-05-09/tiger-global-is-said-to-reap-3-billion-from-flipkart-investment">three times return</a> on its $1 billion investment in the company. Meanwhile, SoftBank had invested about $2.5 billion in Flipkart back in 2017 and sold its stake to Walmart a year later, for $4 billion. Flipkart will use this fresh capital to expand its operations, further increase its market share and other vertices like groceries, fashion and consumables. A part of the fund will also go into enhancing the company’s supply chain and logistics network. “This investment by leading global investors reflects the promise of digital commerce in India and their belief in Flipkart’s capabilities to maximise this potential for all stakeholders. We will continue to invest in new categories and leverage made-in-India technology to transform consumer experiences and develop a world-class supply chain,” CEO Krishnamurthy added. The capital will also allow Flipkart to take on other well-fueled competition Amazon, Reliance and Tata Group, who have been going aggressive to take on Flipkart’s share of the market. According to a Reuters report citing sources it did not name, the financial investigation agency has alleged that after Flipkart got foreign investment, a related party, <keyword id="1556044" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="WS-retail">WS Retail</keyword>, started selling goods to consumers via the e-commerce platform. This is prohibited under Indian law. ED has issued show-cause notice to both the companies and its founders last month to explain why they shouldn’t face a penalty of $1.35 billion for allegedly violating India’s foreign direct investment (FDI) policy. Tiger Global, which has been an investor in Flipkart for a decade has also been issued such a notice. Tiger Global declined to comment on the issue. A Flipkart spokesperson told Reuters, the company is "in compliance with Indian laws and regulations…We will cooperate with the authorities as they look at this issue pertaining to the period 2009-2015 as per their notice." One of the sources at Flipkart told Reuters that they have around 90 days to respond to the notice and WS Retail had ceased its operations at the end of 2015. Flipkart was acquired by <keyword id="80487" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="walmart">Walmart</keyword> in 2018, after which Sachin Bansal sold off all his shareholdings but Binny Bansal continues to hold some. The company’s valuation has doubled since then, from $16 billion in 2018 to $37.6 billion now. And even though the Liberty finished out their schedule on the upswing, few expected the seventh-seeded squad to offer a serious challenge for Candace Parker and her second-seeded Chicago Sky.But New York marched into Chicago's Wintrust Arena and delivered a gut-punch to the reigning champions, earning a surprise 98-91 road victory in Game 1 of the series that "woke 'em up" for the rest of the playoffs, according to Brondello. An already-loud arena reached a fever pitch in the fourth quarter as the scrappy home team cut Chicago's 12-point halftime lead to just three, but the young squad didn't have enough juice to close the gap and make the Sky fall.Still, New York's resilience — both within Tuesday's do-or-die contest and over the past few years at large — was on full display. There are "some really good signs," she said with a smile, that the team "laid a really solid foundation" for the future."This season is just touching the surface of what we want," Ionescu said during her exit interview Thursday. "We want to be a playoff team every year. Not as a seven or eight seed, but in conversation for a top seed."

The Sky's the limit for the New York Liberty, whose future on and off the court looks brighter than it's been in years

Victor Willoughby was diagnosed with Ebola last week after he treated a man with organ-related problems. The patient, a senior banker, was later diagnosed with Ebola and has since died.
The drug, ZMab, was transported in frozen form on a Brussels Airlines flight that arrived overnight. Before it could thaw, Willoughby's condition deteriorated, said chief medical officer Brima Kargbo.
His death brings to 12 the number of Sierra Leone doctors to have contracted the virus. Eleven have died. In all, 142 health workers have been infected with the disease in the West African country and 109 have died, according to World Health Organization figures.
Sierra Leone, neighboring Guinea and Liberia are at the heart of the world's worst recorded outbreak of Ebola. Rates of infection are rising fastest in Sierra Leone, which now accounts for more than half of the 18,603 confirmed cases of the virus.
The overall death toll from the epidemic has risen to 6,915 as of Dec. 14, the WHO said on Wednesday, adding that the increase in cases in Sierra Leone appeared to have slowed.
Kargbo said Willoughby's death was one of the most tragic to hit the country since the passing, in July, of its only virologist and Ebola specialist, Dr Shek Humar Khan.
"We all looked up to Dr Willoughby and would consult him on many issues relating to our medical profession," Kargbo said.
Ebola centers in Sierra Leone overflowed on Wednesday as health workers combed the streets of the capital Freetown for patients, after the government launched a major operation to contain the epidemic.
Dr M'Baimba Baryoh, a surgeon at Connaught hospital Freetown who described Dr Willoughby as a "very good friend", said Sierra Leone had desperate need of more foreign healthcare workers as local staff were overstretched.
"We've lost personal friends and colleagues we've worked with. It's extremely depressing and frustrating. You can talk to someone today and tomorrow they are Ebola-infected," he said.
"The tension, the depression, it's a lot of pressure. You start having nightmares because of Ebola."
