From the time Sir Dorabji <keyword id="19904884" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata" source="keywords">Tata</keyword> sponsored a handful of Indian athletes to the 1920 Antwerp Olympics, Tata group has been a constant in India's sporting landscape and the conglomerate's involvement only grew under <keyword id="19981455" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ratan-tata" source="keywords">Ratan Tata</keyword>, who considered sport a "way of life". The chairman emeritus of Tata Sons died here at the age of 86 on Wednesday after being admitted to a hospital on Monday for "age and related medical conditions". His death triggered an avalanche of tributes from eminent personalities from all walks of life and sports was no different. <br /><br /> From being the title sponsor of the glitzy Indian Premier League of cricket to supporting lesser-followed sports like archery to owning a football team in the Indian Super League to sponsoring a high-profile chess tournament, the Tata group has been deeply involved with the country's sporting ecosystem. Most of this involvement grew during Ratan Tata's tenure. <br /><br /> "He always believed in 'sports is the way of life' and we are happy to carry forward the legacy. We have been the torchbearer of sports with 19 sporting verticals from football, hockey, archery to horse riding, boxing, karate, racket sports. You name it, we have it," an official involved with the JRD Tata Sports Academy, which was inaugurated in 1991 in Jamshedpur, told PTI. <br /><br /> The growth in Tata Group's sporting involvement under Ratan Tata was the continuation of a legacy. After all, Sir Dorabji Tata, who played cricket, tennis and football, was the first President of the Indian Olympic Association (1924). <br /><br /> This was after he had financed the Olympic appearance of four track-and-field athletes and two wrestlers at the Antwerp Games, helping organise their trials in Pune as well. <br /><br /> Tata Steel Chess, which is also called the 'Wimbledon of chess', is a marquee event on global chess calendar, held at <keyword id="20385206" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="wijk-aan-zee" source="keywords">Wijk Aan Zee</keyword>, the Netherlands. <br /><br /> It wasn't always known that. It was Corus Chess Tournament for the longest time before Tata Steel took over the title sponsor company, thereby claiming the rights of this event from 2007 onwards. <br /><br /> Five-time world champion and Indian chess legend <keyword id="20221790" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="viswanathan-anand" source="keywords">Viswanathan Anand</keyword> was among the first sports icons to pay tributes to the late industrialist, saying that he "touched all our lives". <br /><br /> "It is with profound sadness that we bid farewell to a giant of industry and philanthropy. We received our Padma Vibhushan together, and I was truly touched by his humility and genteel nature," Anand wrote on X. <br /><br /> "The chess fraternity owes much to the traditions that are so closely associated with the Tata Group. @tatasteelchess in Holland is an event that made us chess players particularly proud, especially when the Tatas took over Corus, and later starting a new tradition with @tschessindia," he added. <br /><br /> "The chess world and I offer our deepest condolences to @RNTata2000, a human being who touched all our lives and always stood for the good of society. Rest in peace," Anand continued. <br /><br /> Tata Foootball Academy started back in 1987 under <keyword id="23494114" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="russi-mody" source="keywords">Russi Mody</keyword>, the then chairman of Tata Steel, who had the backing of Ratan Tata for the project. <br /><br /> The academy has been supplying national level footballers since early '90s with its some of its noted alumni being current All India Football Federation head and former goalkeeper Kalyan Chaubey, Rennedy Singh, Dipendu Biswas and Kiran Khongsai. <br /><br /> "TFA has played a pioneering role in Indian football by focusing on nurturing young talent and contributing significantly to the development of football in the country," the official associated with JRD sports complex said. <br /><br /> "He (Ratan Tata) was there at the launch of Jamshedpur FC in the ISL in 2017. he interacted with the players and coaches, took photos with them. They also presented him with a signed jersey. He was very happy to see the team coming up and playing in the top tier ISL," he recalled. <br /><br /> The enigmatic businessman was there to launch the hockey academy in Jamshedpur in 2019. <br /><br /> "...perhaps for the last time he was here," the official said. <br /><br /> Hockey India said Ratan Tata will be remembered as a "shining gem". <br /><br /> "Your vision and endless contribution to our nation will never be forgotten. I was fortunate to spend time with him, but millions, who have never met him, feel the same grief that I feel today. Such is his impact," <keyword id="20012835" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tendulkar" source="keywords">Tendulkar</keyword> wrote. <br /><br /> The Tata Archery Academy in Jamshedpur has been the training ground for ace Indian archers Deepika Kumari and Atanu Das for several years. <br /><br /> Given Tata Group's involvement in India's Olympic movement, it was hardly a surprise to see an outpouring of tributes from some of country's top athletes. <br /><br /> "I'm very sorry to hear about the passing of Shri Ratan Tata ji. He was a visionary, and I'll never forget the conversation I had with him. He inspired this entire nation. I pray that his loved ones find strength. Om Shanti," posted India's track-and-field Olympic gold-winner, Neeraj Chopra. <br /><br /> India's first-ever Olympics medal winner in badminton, <keyword id="20204318" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="saina-nehwal" source="keywords">Saina Nehwal</keyword> described him as a great man. <br /><br /> "Ratan Tata sir aapki legacy hamesha humare saath rahegi. RIP (sic). (A great man and true visionary. Tata sir your legacy will always remain with us," she said. <br /><br /> One of India's greatest spin bowlers and former captain Anil Kumble said, "Mr. Ratan Tata's contribution extends far beyond business. The Tata effect on Indian sports: Ratan Tata's demise mourned by India stalwarts

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Norway's 24-year-old chess phenom, Magnus Carlsen, successfully defended his World Chess Championship late last year in Sochi, Russia, once again defeating 44-year-old Viswanathan Anand of India.</p>
<p>But that doesn't mean Carlsen is unbeatable, as we just learned.</p>
<p>On Monday at a big and very important tournament, the <a href="http://www.tatasteelchess.com/">Tata Steel</a> in Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands, Carlsen went down to the Polish number one, Radoslaw Wojtaszek.<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wijk_aan_Zee" title="Wijk aan Zee"><br /></a></p>
<p>Wojtaszek is 28, a Grandmaster, but rated 2744, more than 100 points lower than Carlsen, 2862 (who has the highest rating of all time).</p>
<p>Interestingly, however, Wojtaszek was one of Anand's "seconds" for the World Championship - effectively, a sparring partner and assistant to the challenger. Of course, this means that at the moment, Wojtaszek knows Carlsen's game as well as anyone on Earth.</p>
<p>On Monday, it showed.</p>
<p>At the WCC, Carlsen indicated that in dynamic positions, he can leave open the prospect for tactics - combinations of moves that are the heart and soul of attacking, "fighting" chess, but that in the modern game occur less frequently than in the past, due to players' ability to train with computers and avoid complications.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">In their game, the third of 13 scheduled, </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Wojtaszek was playing white and created a beautiful tactic on move 40. </span></p>
<p>As you can see from the diagram below, Carlsen, as black, is on the attack with his pieces converging on Wojtaszek's king. But earlier Wojtaszek had captured a bishop for a pawn, and he finds a way to convert that to a decisive advantage by trading queens.</p>

<p>To avoid the loss of his f-pawn - and a check - by the white king, Carlsen slides his king to the g7 square. But then Wojtaszek plays for the queen exchange with the move Qf4, Carlsen takes with his queen, and then Wojtaszek "forks" the black queen and king by playing his knight to h5 with check.</p>

<p>Carlsen has to get his king out of check, so Wojtaszek picks up the black queen on the next move.</p>
<p>A bit later, he threatened to snap up another black pawn, so Carlsen resigned on move 52. Wojtaszek's extra piece would enable him to win the endgame.</p>
<p>So, a very pretty win - although analytically, perhaps lost several moves before the decisive queen exchange. Carlsen had already kind of quasi-blundered his queen into an ill-advised attack.</p>
<p>Carlsen did win his game in round 4, so it's not like he's completely falling apart.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Carlsen's main rival these days, Italy's Fabiano Caruana (actually, an American who now plays for Italy) is having another solid tournament, surging into first at the Tata Steel before being displaced by Vassily Ivanchuk, an unpredictable, aging Ukrainian genius called "Big Chucky" on the international chess scene.</p>
<p>Caruana laid waste to an impressive field (including Carlsen) in St. Louis last year before the WCC and is now the odds-on favorite to challenge Carlsen for a future title.</p>
<p>He's a cerebral 22-year-old who lives and breathes chess and has stormed the top ranks of the game over the past two years. </p>
<p>It looks like 2015 is going to be an impressive year for big-time chess, as Magnus battles to stay on top and literally everyone take a crack at beating him, including some impressive young players, along with a few veterans.</p>

World Chess Champ Magnus Carlsen Lost An Amazing Game

<p>The Tata Steel chess tournament, held in the small town of <span>Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands, recently concluded. This is one of the biggest, big-time chess tournaments in the world, usually attracting all the top talent. This year was no exception: current World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen won the title.</span></p>
<p><span>Carlsen got off to a sluggish start, but he came on very strong at the end.</span></p>
<p><span>Two major stories emerged from the tournament. First, a host of new, young Grandmasters, all well under 30, challenged Carlsen for supremacy. The next decade in major-league international chess is going to be very exciting.</span></p>
<p><span>Second, Carlsen's closest challenger, the American-born Italian GM Fabiano Caruana, squared off against the World Champ in round 6 or the tourney. Caruana, 22, is rated 2820 and was coming off one of the most impressive performances ever recorded in competitive chess, taking the trophy at a big tournament in St. Louis and totally dominating the field, at one point winning 7 games in a row, including a win against Carlsen.</span></p>
<p><span>Carlsen, 24, has the highest rating in chess history, 2862. </span></p>
<p><span>But that's only 40 points higher than Caruana. And Caruana, prior to the Tata Steel, was seen as the player who was surging.</span></p>

<p><span>So...</span></p>
<p><span>Carlsen played a rather un-Carlsen-like game to ultimately defeat Caruana.</span></p>
<p><span>That's right, <em>defeat</em>. No draw. A clear and impressive win.</span></p>
<p><span>Carlsen now has a reputation as a player who likes to avoid sharp, attacking chess, preferring to obtain a small edge and use that edge to achieve wins in grueling endgames. This gets into opponents' heads. They expect Magnus to grind them down in 4-5 hours games. To a degree, they fear it.</span></p>
<p><span>However, Carlsen, when he was younger, played in an attacking style (to be fair, most young, good players are pretty aggressive - it's only later that they calm down and learn to play in a more steady manner). And he can <em>still </em>play very aggressive chess. He decimated his WCC challenger, Vishy Anand, with a very bold and attacking game last year when the two men were starting to play for the title.</span></p>
<p><span>In the Tata Steel game, here's the point where things got scary for Caruana. Carlsen has the black pieces and the opening was a well-known variation on the Sicilian Defense - the most aggressive opening response that black can play to white's first move of pawn-to-e4 (the so-called "King's Pawn" opening because you move the pawn in front of your king two spaces). </span></p>
<p><span>In the Sicilian, black responds by moving his c-pawn two spaces: the move, c5, creates an "asymmetrical" position and signals that black is going for a win from the first move.</span></p>
<p><span>The variation Carlsen and Caruana got into is called the "Rossolimo," named for the 20th-century GM Nicolas Rossolimo, who popularized it. The basic idea, without getting too deep into the thing, is to damage black's so-called "pawn structure," creating the liability of two pawns sitting in tandem on a single file - "doubled" pawns, which can be a problem for black in and endgame.</span></p>
<p><span>Carlsen, however, wasn't thinking endgame, as the position below illustrates:</span></p>

<p><span>Ouch! He's just hammed that f-pawn DEEP into Caruana's territory. Note as well that he's massed a ton of attacking power on the f-, g- and h-files. A ferocious onslaught is coming.</span></p>
<p><span>And come it did!</span></p>
<p><span>Look at the position after black's move 31! White's king is naked, <em>in check from the black pawn, </em>and the melée on the f-, g-, and h-files has left black with a still-protected king and white with ... not much in the way of counterplay on the other side of the board.<em><br /></em></span></p>

<p><span>Anyway, it's all over 9 moves later, with this terrifying position for white leading to Caruana's resignation:</span></p>

<p><span>There's no question that Carlsen was out to prove something here. Much as he switched to the attack, from his "normal" style, to gain an early advantage against Anand in the WCC, so he came out swinging in this game against Carlsen, who <em>had been</em> the hottest player in chess.</span></p>
<p><span>This game was much-anticipated. And Carlsen demonstrated that although he and Caruana are close in rating, when it comes to a contest over the board, the World Champion can control the action.</span></p>
