<h2>Android Wear</h2>
<p>Android Wear is Google's new wearable computing operating system that it introduced a few months ago. LG and Motorola have both showed off prototypes of smartwatches running Android Wear, but those products don't even have a launch date yet. Many are expecting Google and its Android Wear partners to announce more details on availability. We've also heard rumors that Samsung will show off an Android Wear watch during the event.</p>

<h2>Home automation/home security</h2>
<p>Ahead of Google I/O, Google's Nest division announced it's opening up its platform so any device maker can make everyday objects like lights and doorlocks "smart" and talk to each other. Nest is the company that makes smart thermostats and smoke detectors. Google bought it for $3.2 billion last year. Nest, in turn, bought WiFi camera company Dropcam last week for $555 million.</p>
<p>The new Nest platform already has some big names tied to it like Jawbone and Mercedes. For example, your Mercedes can talk to your Nest thermostat and tell it when you're almost home. Then, your thermostat can kick in so your home is the right temperature by the time you arrive. </p>
<p>This is part of Google's push into the "internet of things" trend, and it'll likely give us some more details on it during the keynote.</p>

<h2>Android TV</h2>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Google TV, the software from 2010 that powered set-top boxes and some smart TVs, ended up being a failure. But it seems like Google is going to try again with a new, similar TV operating system called Android TV. In April, <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2014/4/5/5584604/this-is-android-tv">The Verge got its hands on some screenshots</a> of the new Android TV interface. Based on the leak, it looks like Android TV will let you do the same things other streaming TV devices like Roku, Apple TV, and Amazon Fire TV already do. That means streaming video from service like Netflix and Hulu. You'd also be able to watch stuff you purchase through Google Play, Google's online store for digital content.</span></p>

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">It's been about a year since Google launched the second iteration of its Nexus tablet, so there's a good chance we'll see a new model at I/O. <a href="http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/06/21/this-is-volantis-htcs-nine-inch-nexus-tablet/">Android Police reports</a> that HTC will be making the next Nexus tablet, which will have an 8.9-inch screen. However, many still think the so-called Nexus 9 tablet won't launch until later in the summer or early this fall.</span></p>
<h2><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Is Google+ going to be stripped down for parts?</span></h2>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">A few months ago, <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/04/24/google-is-walking-dead/">TechCrunch reported</a> that Google might strip down its social network Google+ into separate services for video chatting, instant messaging, and photo storage. The move would make sense. The head of Google+, Vic Gundotra, recently left the company. And Google+ has largely failed to become a mainstream social network like Facebook.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">It'd be a good move. Even if Google+ ends up being a failure, it <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-plus-photos-2014-4">spawned great products</a> like Hangouts video chat and a tool that automatically edits and organizes your photos.</span></p>
<h2>Will Google Glass finally go mainstream?</h2>
<p>It's been about two years since Google first introduced Google Glass to the world. Today, it's still only available to early adopters willing to drop $1,500. Google has been promising an affordable consumer version of Glass, and this week could be when we get an important update on the project.</p>

<p>MyEnergy uses information directly from utility companies as well and offers its service to residents across the U.S. People can log on to the site using a Facebook or Google account, or create a new username and password. Then, they are required to give their utility account numbers and passwords to MyEnergy so they can sync user's information from their providers. Bixby assures that the process is secure and doesn't require any other personal information, such as Social Security numbers.</p>
<p>"It will automatically retrieve all of your utility data and put you right on the map to show you how you compare with all the other homes like you in your area," Bixby said.</p>
<p>Users can track their utility usage against neighbors or other people in the same area code. </p>
<p>Each person can track their own goals and cash in on reward points for items ranging from a free month's supply of <a href="http://www.popchips.com/">Popchips</a> to $50 local restaurant coupons. Users can also get discounts on gourmet gift baskets, water bottles and <a href="https://yourkarma.com/">Karma WiFi hotspots</a>, Bixby said.</p>
<p>Utility bills take out a big chunk of disposable income in many households and usually only one person sees the bill, he added.</p>

Since basically inventing the location check-in concept on mobile phones in 2009, the app has slowly faded into relative obscurity.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To date, Foursquare has raised over $120 million dollars in venture capital and reportedly turned down acquisition offers from the <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2010/04/22/facebook-and-microsoft-check-in-with-foursquare-will-crowley-sell/">likes of Facebook</a> <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2015/04/15/sources-yahoo-in-talks-to-buy-foursquare/#.wrbsh3d:dbXz">and Yahoo</a>. It has also introduced <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/foursquare-launches-trending-this-week-2015-11">features like Trending this Week</a>, which surfaces new, hip restaurants in a city based on where other Foursquare users are eating.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Foursquare</span></p><p class="caption">Trending this Week was introduced in the main Foursquare app in November 2015. It wouldn't exist without Pilgrim.</p></div><p></p></div></div>A feature like Trending this Week, which collects aggregated and anonymized foot traffic data from Foursquare's users, wouldn't have been possible without Pilgrim. "We have this real pulse of a city now," Foursquare head of engineering Andrew Hogue told Tech Insider in a recent interview. "We know where people are going."</span></p><h2><strong>Meet "Pilgrim"</strong></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Since Pilgrim went online in early 2014, the company has started "finding interesting things to do with the data" it collects, Crowley says. It already licenses data to Twitter, Pinterest, Yahoo, Microsoft, and others to enhance their location features (Foursquare used to power location tagging in Instagram before it was replaced by Facebook's own tool.) In the last year, Foursquare has started offering business analytics with its foot traffic data, which Crowley describes as "an incredibly lucrative market."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Advertisers, for instance, can pay to see if their campaigns actually drove people into a Macy's or car dealership. Because Foursquare knows where its users are going, banks that give small business loans pay Foursquare to know if a business actually exists and isn't a scam. It works too. In September, <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/foursquare-nails-early-iphone-6s-sales-2015-9">Foursquare accurately predicted Apple would sell 13 million iPhones</a> during the iPhone 6S opening weekend based on its foot traffic data around Apple stores.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"We had all these people from financial institutions saying, 'What data do you have that we don't have?'" Crowley says. The answer is Pilgrim.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Crowley gets excited when he explains how Pilgrim works. "We have this superpower," he tells me from across a conference room table in Foursquare's New York City headquarters. "We have this awesome thing that we built, and it only lives in two apps - Foursquare and Swarm."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">So what exactly is Pilgrim? It's an engine that runs in the background and records every time a phone with Foursquare or Swarm installed stops moving. When it stops moving, Pilgrim tries to figure out where exactly you are, if you've been there before, or if there's anything going on in the area you might be interested in, like a happy hour at an oyster bar. It has to decide if you're stopped at a traffic light, walking down the street, or entering a coffee shop. Pilgrim makes these decisions millions of times per day.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Crowley walks over to a large whiteboard and starts drawing a map of the intersection between Bleecker Street and Bowery in downtown Manhattan. He frequents Think Coffee, which is located at that corner.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When people check in at Think Coffee, he explains, it's not always logged from inside the building. A check-in could happen across the street or a block away. A cell tower could be broken, there could be other signal interference, or it could be a cloudy day. Foursquare takes scattered check-ins and smooths them out to show the general area around a place, and by extension, how a smartphone phone actually sees the world.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Foursquare</span></p><p class="caption">The points where people check in are smoothed over to create the shapes Foursquare uses to identify places in the real world.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">These shapes Foursquare forms around places like Think Coffee represent the WiFi fingerprint, Bluetooth signals, and different GPS signals in the area. Shapes grow and shrink throughout the day. Think Coffee's shape will shrink at night, while a bar's shape might stretch and morph as more people arrive in the evening.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When you enter one of these shapes with the Foursquare or Swarm app on your phone, the app tells Pilgrim the shape it's detecting, and Pilgrim makes the final call about what shape you're actually inside. That's how Foursquare knew I had sat down at Lucali for the first time. It knows that Think Coffee's shape is more active in the morning and that Crowley has been there many times, so it decides to not ping him with a tip. If I went to Think Coffee at the same time as Crowley, I would get a tip from Foursquare because I've never been there before.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Foursquare</span></p><p class="caption">This map shows how Foursquare users check in at Central Park.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Foursquare needed the check-in button to get this kind of location data in the app's early days, which defined the company "for better or for worse," according to Crowley. The biggest misconception, he says, that still exists about Foursquare is that it's reliant on manual check-ins. Pilgrim has made it possible to check in without taking your phone out of your pocket. And Foursquare knows more about where its users are going than ever before.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In 2016, Crowley says Foursquare will be focusing more on how its data can be used in other apps.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"Can you make a game that's different if you're playing it in a coffee shop versus if you're playing it in a bookstore or a bus station?" Crowley asks. "Can your exercise app be different if you went to a burger place for dinner yesterday or if you've been going to salad places for the last three weeks? Can the app that you use to hail a car be different if it can recognize that you're in an unfamiliar city?"</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Foursquare</span></p><p class="caption">A visual demonstration of how Foursquare sees check-ins and WiFi signals at the Westfield Mall.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Crowley says that it's this hyper-contextualized, location-aware approach that makes Foursquare different from competitors like Yelp, which still feels very much like a digital phonebook. Apple Maps recently started using Foursquare's business listings, but the competition is still strong. There's Google and Facebook, the latter of which is continuing to invest more in helping businesses and restaurants list themselves and communicate directly with customers.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">With Pilgrim, Crowley thinks Foursquare has technology that's applicable in nearly any app.</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />Whether it's because of Pilgrim or not, Crowley firmly believes that apps will only get better at understanding your habits and doing things for you"You have a hundred apps on your phone," he says. "If there was a Foursquare-style notification coming from some of those apps, what would they be? All these companies want to make them, they just don't have these shapes."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"If we fast forward five years into the future, this is how apps talk to you," he says. Foursquare has an amazing 'superpower' called Pilgrim that could finally let it take over your phone

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>We can review new devices when they're first launched, and their performance can generally be predicted from their specs. But specs only tell part of the story.</p><p>Samsung's latest flagship device, the Galaxy S6, has been out for about a month and a half, and it's one of the most highly rated phones out there. Most consider it to be the best Android phone in the world.</p><p>Here's what it's actually like to use from a real life owner's perspective.</p><p><strong>Design</strong></p><p>Samsung has refreshed its design philosophy from tacky fake chrome edges and plastic/faux-leather textures on previous Galaxy phones to a more refined, sophisticated glass and metal build for the Galaxy S6. I got the white version, which looks and feels premium and does a much better job at justifying its $650 price tag than the previous phones that felt like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chocolate-kinder-surprise-eggs-toys-2015-4">toys inside Kinder Eggs</a>.</p><p>But now that the S6 has sleek, smooth aluminum edges, it feels like it wants to slip out of my hands on a one-way trip to a hard floor. So how do you remedy that? With a cheap plastic $20 case that hides any indication that your S6 is made with premium materials, or that it's an S6 at all since most Galaxy phones look pretty similar from the front.</p><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div></strong><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;">Performance</strong></p><p>Samsung packed some pretty powerful hardware into the S6, and it feels like it for the most part. Performance is largely quick and smooth, animations rarely stutter, and I can switch between apps and scroll down contact lists, and websites pretty smoothly.</p><p>Occasionally, however, I'll wake my phone from sleep and it won't be able to unlock for about four to five seconds because of some sort of bottleneck with the hardware. That might not sound like much, but it's not something you'd expect from a brand new phone with some of the most powerful specs commercially available that's just stripped you of $650 or more.</p><p>It's also not very good for super fast smartphone typists as the S6 lags behind what you're typing, especially when auto-correcting or guessing what you're typing, which it does terribly anyway. I would suggest immediately downloading an alternative, like the Google Keyboard.</p><p>The fingerprint sensor is excellent and you no longer have any excuse to leave your phone without some sort of security measure because entering the passcode was too cumbersome. It registers my thumb prints quickly and accurately and I can get to my apps just as easily as swiping the lock screen to unlock it. Eventually, I'll be able to use the fingerprint sensor with Samsung Pay, Samsung's answer to Apple Pay that launches this summer.</p><p><strong>Samsung's Android</strong></p><p>Think of Android as a basic salad and Samsung as a chef. TouchWiz is the extra software Samsung uses to "skin" the basic version of Android made by Google. In years past, TouchWiz was a heavy hodgepodge of toppings added by a Samsung chef that ruined a perfectly good Android salad into an unrecognizable, cluttered mess.</p><p>Samsung adds its TouchWiz skin over Android to differentiate itself from other Android phones, but it was too cartoony and cluttered in the past. For the S6, it's dialed down its latest version of TouchWiz to look more sophisticated and less cluttered.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>You'll still find silly traces like "Wi-Fi Connected to Network XYZ" banner in the notification shade, which is completely unnecessary and will drive notification perfectionists mad because you can't swipe it away like you do with other notifications. In typical TouchWiz fashion, there's no way to remove it, either.</p><p>Most Samsung apps can be disabled, but some keep running alongside Android to run the TouchWiz interface, which uses up the phone's resources and slows it down. Overall, it's a step in the right direction, but I still prefer Google's basic version of Android.</p><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>Display</strong></p><p>The S6 has the sharpest display there is on a smartphone at the moment, and it looks gorgeous. It's pleasingly bright and one of the only TouchWiz features I like lets you change the color scheme for a natural, warmer, cooler, or colorful display.</p><p><strong>Battery</strong></p><p>This one isn't Samsung's fault.</p><p>I experienced the same questionable battery life that many Galaxy S6 owners were reporting. Since I was getting only slightly better battery life than with my old Nexus 5, I was about to put the S6 back in its box and ship it back to wherever it came from.</p><p>Before I did that, I tried one last thing. I switched off Google Now, Google's digital assistant, and my battery life skyrocketed to last me about 36 hours on a single charge with relatively decent usage, including music streaming. I charge it every night, but I usually have around 50% battery left before I go to bed.</p><p>Google Now used to periodically activate my GPS antenna to gather my location and it forced my phone to process the information for the Google Now updates. I somewhat miss Google Now, but not that much, and it's a problem I'd likely experience with any smartphone.</p><p><strong>Camera</strong></p><p>The S6 takes fantastic pictures. The camera app can be pulled up quickly enough with a double tap of the home button and I've rarely missed a moment I wanted to capture. It offers myriad options like panorama, slow or fast motion, selective focus, and pro mode (for more DSLR-style control over your shots) in a convenient menu when you swipe right.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table center"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>There's a "Virtual shot" mode that takes multiple pictures around a still object to create a cool surrounding effect, but it's mostly for novelty and has few uses because it's difficult to take stable surround shots without some sort of camera tripod.</p><p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p><p>I wish I didn't have to use a grippy plastic rubber case with the S6 because it mutes the newfound beauty of Galaxy smartphones, but I don't want to drop it and potentially shatter the screen or dent the metal edges, either.</p><p>Samsung could have kept using plastic for its phones and still had a premium design. Take my old Nexus 5, for example, it wasn't quite as "pretty" as the S6 since it was made of plastic, but it's still one of the best looking and best feeling phones I've ever owned. And it absorbed drops like a tank.</p><p>Overall, the Galaxy S6 is a great phone despite Samsung's insistence to keep its heavy TouchWiz layer that helps slows everything down. To be fair, it's been dialed back enough that it's not too offensive, and the slowdowns are quite rare. What it's like using the best Android phone in the world for a month

The UN's daily noon press briefing appears on his laptop screen.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>One of the fixtures of the UN press corps spent the first three days of this week reporting out of a public park.</p><p>On a rainy Wednesday morning, Matthew Lee of <a href="http://www.innercitypress.com/">Inner City Press</a> had set up a laptop and smartphone-based wifi hotspot on a row of benches under a construction scaffold in <a href="http://www.nycgovparks.org/parks/ralph-bunche-park/history">Ralph Bunche Park</a>.</p><p>Lee sat with his laptop just feet away from a towering metal sculpture and a broad flight of stairs named after the Soviet dissident Natan Sharansky - and across the street from the UN's Manhattan headquarters.</p><p>That day, Lee wasn't allowed in the complex sprawling across the other side of 1st Avenue without someone signing him in as a guest. The park was the closest he could get to the UN.</p><p>"It's so different doing it this way," Lee, who had his UN resident correspondent credentials abruptly stripped from him last Friday, told Business Insider. People were occasionally bringing him files, but Lee said running his phone as a wifi hotspot limited his ability to contact sources.</p><p>He was also hampered by his distance from the center of the action after being cast out of the institution he covered for nearly a decade. </p><p>"Today the Security Council voted on Yemen sanctions," Lee told Business Insider. "People are tweeting at me asking, what does it mean?"</p><p>The UN headquarters towered over the opposite side of 1st Avenue, the neatly set tables of the delegates' dining visible through 4th-story window, and the front gates opening for the occasional black SUV. When Business Insider met Lee on Wednesday morning, he had just finished watching a briefing on the humanitarian situation in Syria on his laptop.</p><p>But for the first time since 2006, the work of the United Nations - significant and scandalous at times but usually just as plodding and routinized as that of any other large organization - was continuing without him.</p><p>On the afternoon of February 19, UN security presented Lee with <a href="http://www.innercitypress.com/UN1ejectsICP021916.JPG">a letter</a>, signed by UN Under-Secretary-General for Communication and Public Information Cristina Gallach informing him he had until 5 p.m. to clean out his office. According to Lee, the letter said his pass was revoked as the result of a January 29 incident, in which he <a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/hayesbrown/this-journalist-has-kicked-off-a-shitstorm-of-drama-inside-t#.wf6xrg7lJk">watched, recorded, and live-tweeted</a> a meeting of the United Nations Correspondents Association (UNCA) from an interpreter's booth in the UN press briefing room.</p><p>Although Lee was not invited to the meetup, he claimed no closed meetings could be held in the briefing room and that he was within his rights to cover the event.</p><p>Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, told Business Insider that Lee had violated the UN correspondents' accepted standards of behavior in entering an interpreter's booth to observe what was considered to be a closed meeting and then refusing to leave the briefing room.</p><p>"Y<span>ou have more than 150 resident corespondents here, and nothing physically stops them from poking along on different floors and going places they shouldn't go," Dujarric told Business Insider. "If over 99% of the people behave when there's somebody who clearly breaks the rules there has to be a little bit of consequences. Otherwise it doesn't work."</span><span><span></span></span> </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Thomson Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Wider Image: Inside The United Nations Headquarters</p></div><p></p></div></div>Lee has reported extensively on alleged corruption within the UN system, a beat he claims his press corps colleagues have ignored. He's had a contentious relationship with UNCA - he actually served as a vice president of the organization but quit in 2012 to found the <a href="http://www.FUNCA.info">Free UN Coalition for Access</a> - and has been generally critical of the UN press corps.</p><p>He believes the UN-based press is passive, deferential, and generally incurious about the organization they're supposed to be covering.</p><p>"A number of people have said to me look, just write about the UN. Don't write about the journalists at the UN. I didn't come here to do that, but I've concluded that that's part of the story," Lee told Business Insider.</p><p>"The place is legally protected," Lee says, in reference to the UN's immunity under the US <keyword id="6355470" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Law">law</keyword>, the result of <a href="https://treaties.un.org/Pages/ViewDetails.aspx?src=IND&amp;mtdsg_no=III-1&amp;chapter=3&amp;lang=en">the US' 1970 accession</a> to the Convention on Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations. "But it's also journalistically protected."</p><p>Lee says that February 19, he was marched out of UN headquarters by UN security guards, who Lee claims had physically ripped his press badge off of him. </p><p>He claims that he was removed from the UN "without the most basic due-process," and says he was never questioned over the details of the January 29 incident - the details of which <a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/hayesbrown/this-journalist-has-kicked-off-a-shitstorm-of-drama-inside-t#.wf6xrg7lJk">are still in dispute</a>. </p><p>When contacted for comment, the Office of the Undersecretary General for Communications and Public Information did not deny that Lee had never been questioned over the incident before his pass was revoked.</p><p>"In conducting its investigation into the incident on 29 January, [Department of Public Information] reviewed several videos of what happened, including footage that was taken by Mr. Lee and posted on his website," a representative of the office wrote in an email to Business Insider. "DPI also spoke at length with the Office of the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General and officers from the UN Department of Safety and Security who were in attendance on 29 January. These steps were sufficient to determine that Mr. Lee's actions clearly infringed the guidelines that apply to all correspondents at the United Nations."</p><p>Lee thinks he was summarily ejected from the UN press corps. "The UN cannot be throwing journalists into the street," says Lee. "More fundamentally, the UN cannot do a supposed investigation of an incident for three weeks without talking to the defendant once. Since Monday, he had been emailed documents from contacts in Burundi, and one of his sources had handed him a draft version of a Security Council resolution, which he scanned at a nearby FedEx store. He had <a href="http://www.innercitypress.com/ssudan29unaccountable022416.html">written a story on press freedom in South Sudan that morning</a>. </p><p>And he had discovered a way to save himself from having to hunt for a power outlet at a nearby coffee shop: A line of lights running across the ceiling of the construction scaffold had an electrical socket. And while the socket hovers awkwardly from a ceiling roughly 6 feet off the ground, the day before, a man who Lee says he had seen frequently in the park - a Haitian immigrant who claimed to be a former journalist, and who would often talk to Lee about affairs in his country of origin - promised to find him an extension chord. Sure enough, he brought one in a black plastic bag, which was sitting on a park bench next Lee's laptop.</p><p>The scaffold was enough to keep his computer dry amid a persistent rain, although cold raindrops flecked the outer edges of his computer screen. A wireless mouse sat on top of a damp packet of papers.</p><p>Lee was exhibiting remarkable durability amid a punishing February downpour. "As you see, we're perfectly dry here," he said, although that wasn't entirely true.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Armin Rosen/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">The view of UN headquarters from Ralph Bunche Park</p></div><p></p></div></div>Thanks to the UN's immunity under US law, the world body is practically a state unto itself, and Lee has little recourse outside of the UN system. Lee realizes he can't sue his way back into resident correspondent status. He could start building political pressure - Lee is an American citizen, and the US is the UN's <a href="http://www.unausa.org/advocacy/advocacy-agenda/un-funding">largest budgetary contributor</a>. But he says he's "queasy about saying no no, wait a second, this is the UN, I've got the US behind me." </p><p>Lee had a potential ticket out of Ralph Bunche park, though. During Monday's noon press briefing, Dujarric, the UN spokesman, confirmed the world body had <a href="http://www.un.org/press/en/2016/db160222.doc.htm">offered him a "non-resident correspondent" pass on a four-month trial basis</a>. As a result of his new status, Lee claims he would have to vacate his office, work out of a reporters' bullpen, and leave UN headquarters by 6 p.m. each day (Dujarric confirmed to Business Insider that Lee would have vacate his office under his new status).</p><p>On Wednesday Lee told Business Insider he won't accept reduced access, even though he's willing to acknowledge wrongdoing as part of some full restoration of his earlier status.</p><p>"You say we had a misunderstanding, you did something we don't like, we overreacted, why don't you clean my garage and we move on. That's how I view it. That's not how they view it. They view it as like, no, we didn't make a mistake, you made a mistake."</p><p>As Lee notes, the UN is notably unwilling to admit wrongdoing. "They didn't apologize for killing 10,000 people in Haiti," Lee says, in reference to the UN's role in that country's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/cholera-outbreak-in-haiti-and-the-un-2015-4">cholera epidemic</a>, "so I don't expect them to apologize for pushing me into the street."</p><p>The UN was a vague curtain of blue-tinted windows hovering across a damp 1st Avenue. Although behind a security cordon and a high black fence, it was a place that Lee had come to know intimately over a decade of coverage. It was a place he didn't want to return to on anything less than his own terms.</p><p>"If I took this deal I'm hurting my readers, viewers, and the entire profession of journalism because I'm sending a message that if you ask hard questions they can screw you and you take it because you're desperate," Lee said. "And I am desperate. I want to be there.
