Phagwara, Apr 17 () Terming Phagwara-based Lovely Professional University's attitude as "extremely callous and irresponsible" in handling the case of a 21-year-old, corona-positive woman hosteller and keeping itself open, the Punjab government has sought the varsity's explanation over the breach of lockdown orders.<p>  The LPU violated the government of India's lockdown orders under the Epidemic Act and section 144 of Cr P C for closure of the educational institutes across the country, the state government said, asking the varsity to explain why the no objection certificate given to it should not be revoked.</p><p>  The notice, issued on Thursday, sought to remind the LPU that Punjab's Higher Education Ministry had on March 13 ordered suspension of all kinds of teaching work in all institutions, including the private ones.</p><p>  Confirming that LPU was issued a show cause notice on Thursday, Kapurthala Deputy Commissioner Deepti Uppal said a copy of the same was received by her on Friday.</p><p> In the notice, the state's Higher Education and Language Department asked  LPU, which also has several foreign students on its rolls, to explain within seven days why the NOC issued to it should not be revoked for violating the government orders and endangering the lives of 3,200 people, and many more.</p><p>  The notice said the Punjab higher education minister had also ordered the suspension of teaching in all institutions, including the private ones, on March 13.</p><p>  "It has now come to light that in spite of the instructions, ignoring the gravity of the situation and jeopardising the lives of about 3,200 people and thousands of others to which infection can spread, you did not shut down completely," it said.</p><p>  "Considering the highly infectious nature of the disease and despite the fact that there was sufficient time for you to send all students to their respective homes from March 13 to March 22, you continued with the functioning of the university and its hostels and made no efforts to send them to their homes," the notice said.</p><p>  The notice said, "It might be argued by you that the movement of students was not possible in the light of the complete lockdown."</p><p>"But, there is no denying the fact that norms about maintaining social distancing were flouted and the administration was informed that the university was shut and vacated, while that was not the case.</p><p>"It is amply clear that you did not pay any heed to instructions of the district administration on March 23 and kept it in dark," the government told the LPU authorities.</p><p>"When the world is battling this deadly virus and the only remedy is the complete isolation, your administration threw all instructions to the winds and put hundreds of lives at risk," it added.</p><p>  Referring to the case of 21-year-old Maharashtra student testing positive on April 12, the notice said, "There was a corona positive case in your institution and that too was not handled in right earnest."</p><p>"The university authorities did not cooperate with the district administration and the Health Department in sending the patient to hospital. It is clear from above that your conduct and response of the university have been extremely callous and irresponsible," said the strongly-worded notice.</p><p>  At present, the student is undergoing treatment at Kapurthala civil hospital.</p><p>  The notice also mentioned that the issue of the university functioning despite the lockdown had been raised by "some dignitaries".</p><p>  Former Union minister and ex-Hoshiarpur BJP MP Vijay Sampla and Kapurthala ruling party MLA Rana Gurjeett Singh had taken up the issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Amarinder Singh respectively earlier this week.</p> LPU Additional Director Aman Mittal, however, could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.. Rafales are IAF's 'Sikandar', which will significantly boost our combat capabilities," he said.      <br /><br /> He said had there not been the threat of coronavirus pandemic, thousands would have gathered in the streets to welcome the jets. <br /><br />Nearly four years ago, India signed an inter-governmental agreement with France to purchase 36 Rafale jets under a Rs 59,000-crore deal to boost the IAF's combat capabilities. <br /><br />The five Rafales are scheduled to be inducted into the Indian Air Force (IAF) on Wednesday, though a formal induction ceremony would be held later. <br /><br />The jets will be inducted into the IAF as part of its No 17 Squadron, also known as the 'Golden Arrows'. <br /><br />The aircraft is capable of carrying a range of potent weapons. <br /><br />European missile maker MBDA's Meteor beyond visual range air-to-air missile and Scalp cruise missile will be the mainstay of the weapons package of the Rafale jets. <br /><br />Of the 36 jets, 30 will be fighter jets and six will be trainers. <br /><br />The trainer jets will be twin-seater and they will have almost all the features of the fighter jets. <br /><br />The IAF has undertaken major infrastructure upgrades at the Ambala base for the deployment of the first Rafale squadron. <br /><br />Built in 1948, the air base is located on the east side of Ambala and is used for military and government flights. <br /><br />The air base has two squadrons of the Jaguar combat aircraft and one squadron of the MIG-21 'Bison'. You're hungry but you don't really feel like cooking. I guess pasta's pretty easy. Suddenly you're faced with this. That's so many choices. Do you go for the classic tomato basil? How 'bout creamy alfredo? But what exactly is the difference between these two or these three? Wait. Why is this so hard? </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Trader Joe's is the surfy, laid back grocery chain know for it's cheap prices and floral print clad staff. But how much money you spend at Trade Joe's ultimately comes down to what you are choosing to buy. But what about Trader Joe's makes it so easy to choose? </span></p><p><strong>Barry Schwartz:</strong><span style="font-weight: 400;"> I spent, I've spent the last 25 years studying how people make decisions. </span></p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong><span style="font-weight: 400;"> That's Barry Schwartz, a psychologist, a professor, and a Trader Joe's enthusiast himself. </span></p><p><strong>Schwartz:</strong><span style="font-weight: 400;"> I think Trader Joe's is the best example of how the world should be constructed. </span></p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Whoa, take it easy there Barry. Barry coined the term the paradox of choice and quite literally wrote the book on it and it basically describes how you would think that the more-- </span></p><p><strong>Schwartz:</strong><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Choice we have, the better off we are. That turns out empirically not to be true. When you give people too many options, they get paralyzed instead of liberated. </span></p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong><span style="font-weight: 400;"> The store has always focused on a unique selection of products rather than a large amount of them. I wanted to find out if there was choice-limiting going on at Trader Joe's. So I went to my local market to count some things. I counted 144 pasta sauces, 44 olive oils, and 172 cereals. That's a lot of choices. So then I went to Trader Joe's. And they had an approachable 14 pasta sauces to choose from. Same goes for olive oils, canned beans, and cereals. At Trader Joe's, there's simply less to choose from. So then I asked Barry if he thought Trader Joe's perhaps had inklings of the paradox of choice in mind when designing their shopping experience. </span></p><p><strong>Schwartz:</strong><span style="font-weight: 400;"> I think it's completely inadvertence. </span></p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Well then what exactly would explain why Trader Joe's practices a scaled down approach to shopping? </span></p><p><strong>Schwartz:</strong><span style="font-weight: 400;"> They probably did it as a way of controlling costs. Managing inventory, you know, simplifying the supply chain. And somebody thought that if you offered other kinds of value, people would be willing to forgo options. You can't have everything but anything we've got is worth having and we make your life simpler. </span></p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong><span style="font-weight: 400;"> In fact, when you look at Trader Joe's humble beginnings, the original Joe, Joe Coulombe, founded the business on quality over quantity. Trader Joe's made $13.3 billion in 2017 a number that's likely going up. The core of any business is the customer service which Trader Joe's excels at. The employees, or crew members as they're called, are all extremely attentive and helpful. In short, they're there to make your life easier. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This ideology is embodied in their food as well specifically their frozen food. And Americans have always had a certain affection for a heat-and-serve mentality. Frozen dinners are easy, fast, and little mess. However, about half the time, the frozen section aisle remains pretty empty.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"> According to Phil Lempert, a supermarket analyst, this is due to the frosty barrier of the freezer section. Opening that icy cold door likely means you've already committed to purchasing something which doesn't tend to lead to much product discovery. Compare that to Trader Joe's open freezer bins and you can start to see the difference. There's no glass door and the low level of freezers bring shoppers physically closer to the products. It allows the freedom to check out the packaging more leisurely and without the blast of cold air. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">So tons of effort being put forward to get customers to the product, the products themselves have to be good, right? Trader Joe's products are marketed as healthy and the products aren't the same old things we usually see in grocery stores. No Lay's, no Heinz and it's mostly Trader Joe's own private label. They buy straight from the supplier which ultimately cuts costs and leads to cheaper products on the shelves. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The products themselves are colorful, quirky, and have a consistent branding. To find out a little bit more about the effects of good branding, I called Denise Lee Yohn who is a brand building expert. And I wanted to know more about what goes into the packaging design. </span></p><p><strong>Denise Lee Yohn:</strong><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Okay, so it's usually kind of hand-drawn or it's not looking like it's computer generated, right? There are usually caricatures and then there's some descriptive copy. And all of that I think helps the person, the shopper, kind of see how this product fits into their need. There's an element of discovery, like finding a new product you didn't know existing. </span></p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong><span style="font-weight: 400;"> In an interview, the former head of packaging design at Trader Joe's said that the hand-drawn aesthetic invokes feelings of the human touch and artisanal quality. It can be easy to opt for takeout when thinking about stepping into the grocery store after a long day. But the subtle combination of tactics employed by Trader Joe's makes shopping a legitimately enjoyable experience. It gets you excited about something uniquely human, cooking and eating your food.</span></p>

<p>the company reported adjusted earnings of $0.83 per share in Q4, slightly ahead of expectations of $0.82.</p>
<p>Revenues came in at $4.15 billion, also just above estimates of $4.12 billion.</p>
<p>The company said same-store sales in China were down 6 percent in the quarter, partly due to <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">a probe into KFC by the Shanghai FDA.</span></p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;">KFC sales in the last two weeks of the fourth quarter were significantly impacted by the intense media attention surrounding an investigation by the Shanghai FDA (SFDA) into poultry supply management at Yum! China. The investigation was prompted by a report broadcast on China’s national television (CCTV), which aired on December 18, 2012. The report showed that a few poultry farmers were ignoring laws and regulations by using excessive levels of antibiotics in chicken. Regrettably, some of this product was purchased by two poultry suppliers of KFC China. The investigation caused further media attention, including social media commentary, and this negatively affected consumer perceptions of poultry safety, and KFC in particular.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">On January 25, 2013, the SFDA concluded its investigation and released its recommendations. We appreciate their thorough and diligent review. The SFDA identified issues and provided “Supervisory Recommendations” to Yum! China to strengthen our poultry supply chain practices including refined voluntary self testing procedures, improved reporting and communications and enhanced supplier management. Our team in China has taken a comprehensive review of our current system and is in the process of incorporating all of the SFDA’s recommendations. We have always recognized the importance of building a world-class supply chain in China, which is why we have implemented a wide range of quality assurance and testing practices over the years above legal and regulatory standards. The SFDA’s recommendations will further strengthen those practices. The SFDA did not bring a case against Yum! China and no fine was assessed.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">The past seven weeks of media attention have been intense and negative towards the KFC brand image. Even though this is a very disappointing setback, we are more committed than ever to continue to strengthen our efforts, restore the confidence of our customers and win back their brand loyalty. To that end, the China team will soon be launching a brand reputation quality campaign to re-assure consumers of our high quality food, along with aggressive marketing plans.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span class="bwuline"><strong>2013 OUTLOOK</strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">We are confident the YRI and U.S. businesses will deliver annual operating profit growth consistent with our ongoing growth model. Given current uncertainties related to KFC sales in China, it is difficult to confidently forecast our overall financial performance. We have made the assumption that KFC China same-store sales will improve as the year progresses and will be positive in the fourth quarter. With these assumptions, we estimate a mid-single digit EPS decline in 2013 versus prior year, excluding Special Items. This includes an expectation for a significant decline in EPS performance in the first half of the year followed by EPS growth in the second half.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">The first quarter for our China business includes only the months of January and February and is highly impacted by consumer spending during the Chinese New Year holiday. The timing of this holiday changes each year. This year it is important to note that while the timing impact of Chinese New Year is neutral to our first quarter, there is a significant negative impact to January sales and a corresponding significant benefit to February sales due to the timing of this week-long holiday. We expect that the underlying performance of our China business will remain relatively unchanged for the balance of the first quarter, with a same-store sales decline of approximately 25% for January and February combined (China’s first quarter).</p>
