Stock market today: US stocks edge up after wholesale inflation comes in cool

The overall passenger vehicle (PV) dispatches from companies to dealers stood at 3,50,355 units in July 2023, <keyword id="20081560" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="automobile-industry" source="keywords">automobile industry</keyword> body <keyword id="20185536" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SIAM" source="keywords">SIAM</keyword> said on Wednesday. <keyword id="21653561" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="utility-vehicles" source="keywords">Utility vehicles</keyword> continued to drive sales of PVs, clocking 1,88,217 units last month, as against 1,80,831 units in July 2023, a growth of 4.1 per cent, as per the data issued by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). Passenger cars, however, recorded a drop of 12 per cent at 96,652 units, as against 1,09,859 units in the same month last year. Industry observers pointed out that after high-paced growth witnessed in the past couple of years, the industry is witnessing moderation in demand. Besides, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) also undertook stock corrections in July to reduce inventory in the network. As per SIAM data, <keyword id="22783202" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="two-wheeler-wholesales" source="keywords">two-wheeler wholesales</keyword> grew by 12.5 per cent to 14,41,694 units last month, as compared to 12,82,054 units in July 2023. <keyword id="20067449" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="motorcycles" source="keywords">Motorcycles</keyword> wholesales were up 4.1 per cent at 8,50,489 units in July 2024, as against 8,17,206 units in the year-ago month, SIAM said. Scooters sales were up 29.2 per cent at 5,53,642 units last month, as against 4,28,640 units in the year-ago period. Three-wheeler wholesales also rose 5.1 per cent to 59,073 units from 56,204 units in July last year. "Though three-wheeler and two-wheeler segments are performing well, there has been some de-growth of passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles in July 2024, compared to July 2023," SIAM President Vinod Aggarwal said in a statement. He, however, said the above average rainfall coupled with upcoming festive season is likely to again propel growth in the short term. "In addition, enabling budget announcements which emphasise on overall economic growth with fiscal support for infrastructure and rural sector should augur well for the auto sector in the medium-term," Aggarwal said.

Domestic passenger vehicle wholesales dips 2.5% at 3,41,510 units in July: SIAM

Domestic passenger vehicle wholesales declined by about 2 per cent year-on-year in August as companies curtailed dispatches to reduce inventory at dealers amid a drop in demand. According to data issued by the industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (<keyword id="20185536" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SIAM" source="keywords">SIAM</keyword>), the total passenger vehicle dispatches in the domestic market stood at 3,52,921 units last month compared to 3,59,228 vehicles in August 2023, a dip of 1.8 per cent. Two-wheeler wholesales rose 9 per cent to 17,11,662 units last month against 15,66,594 units in the year-ago period, it added. Scooter dispatches last month climbed to 6,06,250 units from 5,49,290 units in August 2023, a growth of 10 per cent. Similarly, motorcycle dispatches from companies to dealers increased by 8 per cent to 10,60,866 units last month from 9,80,809 units in August 2023. The total three-wheeler sales grew 8 per cent to 69,962 units last month against 64,944 units a year ago. "Looking ahead, as the country enters the festive season, demand for vehicles is expected to grow, which will also be duly augmented by the recent announcements of PM E-DRIVE and PM-eBus Sewa Schemes of Government of India," SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon said. However, a positive sentiment in the domestic as well as global equity markets and a weak American currency supported the rupee, <keyword id="19950258" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="forex" source="keywords">forex</keyword> traders said. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 83.93 and slipped further to trade at its previous session's closing level of 83.94 against the greenback. On Wednesday, the rupee settled 3 paise higher at 83.94 against the US dollar. The forex markets were closed on Thursday on account of the Independence Day. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading marginally lower by 0.01 per cent at 102.80. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, declined 0.25 per cent to USD 80.84 per barrel. On the domestic equity market front, Sensex surged 811.34 points, or 1.03 per cent, to 79,917.22 points. In the passenger vehicle (PV) segment, volumes are also expected to see an uptick, largely due to better retail performance and inventory accumulation. The report predicts a slight growth of around 3 per cent y/y for PV volumes. On the commercial vehicles (CV) front, the outlook is more mixed. The report forecasts that overall CV volumes will remain relatively flat, with a small drop of approximately 3 per cent y/y, primarily due to lower light commercial vehicle (LCV) volumes. However, there are bright spots within the segment. Volumes for VECV's CVs are expected to have risen by 15 per cent, and the medium and heavy commercial vehicle (M&amp;H CV) growth forecast has been revised upwards to high single digits from mid-single digits, driven by robust demand for buses and ongoing replacement demand. The M&amp;H CV segment is further bolstered by increased infrastructure and economic activity, as well as a favourable comparison base from Q1 and Q4 of FY24.

This was the fourth consecutive month when <keyword id="19895000" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="inflation" source="keywords">inflation</keyword> witnessed an upward journey. The wholesale price index (<keyword id="19936844" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="WPI" source="keywords">WPI</keyword>) based inflation was 2.61% in May. It was (-) 4.18% in June 2023. Wholesale inflation had touched a high of 3.85% in February 2023."Positive rate of inflation in June, 2024 is primarily due to increase in prices of food articles, manufacture of food products, crude petroleum &amp; natural gas, mineral oils, other manufacturing etc," the Ministry of Commerce &amp; Industry said in a statement on Monday. As per the data, inflation in food articles rose 10.87% cent in June, as against 9.82% in May. Inflation in vegetables was 38.76% during June, up from 32.42% in May. Onion inflation was at 93.35%, while potato was 66.37% in the month under review. Pulses inflation rose 21.64% in June. During the month, inflation in other food items like fruits stood at 10.14%, cereals at 9.27%, and milk at 3.37%. The up move in the WPI inflation in June 2024 was broad-based, driven by all the major segments except fuel and power, ICRA Chief Economist Aditi Nayar said. Looking ahead, she said, the headline WPI inflation is expected to dip to about 2% in July 2024, driven by a favourable base, as well as some cooling in global commodity prices. With regard to oil prices, she said, the average price of the Indian basket of crude oil has been quite volatile in July 2024 so far, on the back of supply-demand mismatches, witnessing a month-on-month rise (USD 86.6/bbl up to July 11). Higher crude oil prices might exert an upward pressure to the headline WPI inflation in the ongoing month, she added. The worker has shared employment details with Business Insider to verify their identity. The interview has been edited for length and clarity.I joined Costco as a truck driver last year after a few years working part-time for FedEx, and I think more warehouse and distribution employees should <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/costco-manager-advice-for-getting-promoted-2024-6">consider the job</a>.On a typical day, I wake up at 9 a.m., eat my breakfast, and I'm off to the gym. I get home by 11:30 or 12, make a quick lunch, and I'm off to work to clock in at 2 p.m.At work, I get my tablet and meet with my team. One of the managers will usually have a safety concern or bring something to our attention about what we can do better.After that, we walk outside to pre-check the truck. We have to look for oil leaks or damages to the truck that we might not have noticed earlier.We "jump seat," which means we all share the company trucks between morning and evening shifts.After we log into our computer system, we get our assignment for the day on a program called Samsara.For example, today I'm going from Atlanta, Georgia, to Montgomery, Alabama, and yesterday I did two local runs.We refer to the trailers as "dry box" and "wet box." Wet means frozen and refrigerated goods that have to be kept at 10 degrees or 34 degrees. Dry box is for furniture or other dry goods the store sells that don't need to be temperature-controlled.When I arrive at a warehouse, I backup to the door, drop my trailer, and head inside for my lunch break for a half hour to an hour.Sometimes I'll get something to eat from inside the store, but other days I'll bring lunch and have it in the break room.After lunch, if they haven't finished unloading the trailer I brought, I usually bring a different one back to the depot.For shorter runs, we do a "drop and hook," meaning we leave the full trailer and pick up a waiting one.Sometimes it's returned merchandise, sometimes they're empty, and sometimes it's full of the pallets that are used to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/costco-forklift-driver-essential-to-success-of-warehouse-2024-6">move products in the warehouse</a>.Before departing, I enter the load information and the time into Samsara and head back to the depot, usually arriving by 10 p.m.I work the same shift Monday through Friday, but we go to different stores every day.The job requires a commercial driver's license and Costco usually wants to see three years of experience working for another reputable company. Our manager actually wants applicants to have 10 years of experience.I prefer this job over longer distance, overnight routes because I like to be home every night. It doesn't matter to me if they send me to Montgomery or Hoover, Alabama, or Greenville, South Carolina, we're typically back within an eight-hour timeframe.That's what attracts a lot of truck drivers to Costco: one is the pay, two is the benefits, and three is getting to go home every night.
