Tobacco is among the most consumed commodity worldwide. And its consumption continues to be a key contributor to the global disease burden, responsible for a whopping 12 per cent of deaths among persons under 30 globally. Roughly 4.5 trillion cigarette filters pollute our oceans, rivers, city sidewalks, parks, soil and beaches every year,” said Dr <keyword id="14073773" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ruediger-krech" source="Orion">Ruediger Krech</keyword>, Director of <keyword id="5105691" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="health-promotion" source="Orion">Health Promotion</keyword> at the <keyword id="6356311" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="world-health-organisation" source="Orion">World Health Organisation</keyword> (WHO).<br />The global health agency released a comprehensive research report titled “Tobacco: Poisoning our planet”, outlining these impacts on the <keyword id="6569966" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="world-no-tobacco-day" source="Orion">World No Tobacco Day</keyword> this year.<br />Tobacco industry also emits 84 megatons of greenhouse gas into the atmosphere each year, as reported by WHO. The research highlights that the carbon footprint of the tobacco business from manufacturing, processing, and transportation, is comparable to one-fifth of the CO2 produced by the commercial aircraft sector each year.<br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Ecological toll of tobacco" comment="subhead" text="Ecological toll of tobacco"><span data-til="noop">Ecological toll of tobacco</span></cmsannotation><br />The manufacture of cigarettes consumes around 22 billion litres of water each year. As per the WHO report, approximately 3.5 million hectares of land are cleared for tobacco cultivation, driving up deforestation in underdeveloped countries.<br />Tobacco also causes soil erosion because it is typically grown as a single or monocrop, exposing the topsoil to wind and water. Tobacco farming has caused desertification in several nations, including <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>, as monocropping tobacco on drylands has been regarded as "the most erosive crop." Furthermore, evidence from a WHO report reveals that tobacco production has a significantly more "aggressive" influence on forest ecosystems than other uses such as corn farming or grazing.<br />Tobacco production and curing are also among the most ecologically damaging agricultural practices in low- and middle-income nations. The economic return on tobacco production has hiked over time in several nations, encouraging more and more farmers to opt for tobacco farming. However, it causes consequential losses of forests, plants, and animal species, while affecting the health of farmers who work with harsh chemicals used in the production and manufacturing process.<br />Cigarettes are made up of toxic substances, including Cellulose acetate fibres. Like other microplastics, these persistent pollutants can linger for decades and are found in all ecosystems worldwide. Cellulose acetate fibres degrade the environment over time, while cigarette butts can accumulate on the deep sea bed. Butts containing toxic substances can threaten biodiversity, including plants, insects, rodents, fungi, and other living things, says the research.<br /><br /><br /><br />

New Delhi, May 11 () Invasive techniques should not be adopted for forensic autopsy in COVID-19 death cases as doctors and other mortuary staff are exposed to potentially dangerous health risks due to organ fluids and secretions, the ICMR has said in a draft document.<p>According to the final draft 'Standard Guidelines for Medico-legal autopsy in COVID-19 deaths in India' released by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), deaths in hospital and under medical care due to coronavirus infection is a non-MLC case and doesn't require postmortem and the required certification of death is being done by treating doctors. </p><p>Some of the cases of suspected COVID-19 death which are brought dead to hospitals are labelled by emergency doctors as MLC and the body is sent to the mortuary and police are informed which may need postmortem examination for clarity in the cause of death.</p><p>"The forensic autopsy of these cases may be waived off," the draft guidelines said. </p><p>Some of the cases are suicide, homicide or accident and may be positive or suspected case of coronavirus infection. After the inquest procedure, if any crime is not suspected, police have the authority to waive off conduction of medico-legal autopsy, even though labelled as medico-legal case.</p><p>"The investigating police officer must proactively take steps to waive off unnecessary autopsies during such pandemic situation," the draft document said.</p><p>As per the procedure of conducting forensic autopsy, the "dissection of bones and tissues will generate aerosol which may lead to spread of infection. On the basis of same along with external examination, multiple photographs and verbal autopsy (as depicted by WHO)...the post mortem should be conducted strictly avoiding any invasive surgical procedures and avoiding splashing of body fluids contact for staffs, body handlers and doctors conducting post mortem."  </p><p>According to the draft guidelines by the ICMR, if the COVID-19 test report is awaited, the body must not be released from the mortuary until the final report is received and after the formalities, it must be handed over to the district administration. </p><p>"At no time, more than two relatives must be present near the body and they must maintain a distance of at least one meter from the body.</p><p>"The body must be identified by relatives through the plastic bag, without opening the bag, and it must be done in the presence of law enforcing agencies," it said.</p><p>"The body must be taken to the burial/cremation ground in presence of law enforcing agencies, where not more than five relatives of the deceased should be allowed. Large gathering at the crematorium/ burial ground should be avoided as a social distancing measure as it is possible that close family contacts may be symptomatic and shedding the virus," it said.  </p><p>These guidelines are based on the current understanding about modes of transmission of COVID-19 sensitivity of diagnostic tests, international autopsy guidelines and knowledge about infrastructure and logistic strength of common mortuaries in India, the document stated.</p><p>Complete PPE has to be used while shifting the body in the mortuary if it involves direct handling of the body by the staff. </p><p>The body should be packed in a double packing in a  leak-proof zipped transparent plastic body bag which is locked properly to avoid spillage of any fluids.      </p><p>The existing mortuary facility for body storage should be strictly divided into COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 bodies.</p><p>In case of burial upper surface should be cemented and earmarked.</p><p>The body must be cremated in electric crematorium, wherever possible, so that the movement and handling of the body is minimized, the draft guidelines stated.  </p>Religious rituals which requires touching the bodies should be avoided like bathing, kissing and hugging etc., the document said, adding that ash does not pose any risk and can be collected to perform last rites. Trump's pick for labor secretary runs a fast-food chain where 2 in 3 women report being sexually harassed on the job

So simple," Trump said of how he would defend his wall plan <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/whos-in-the-first-gop-debate-2015-8">in this week's debate</a>. "You know the Great Wall of China, built a long time ago, is&#xa0;13,000 miles. I mean, you're talking about big stuff. We're talking about peanuts, by comparison, to that. Mexico will pay for the wall. I will make sure it gets done properly."</p><p>O'Reilly was unconvinced, asking how he'd convince the Mexican government and President Enrique Peña Nieto to pay for the plan.</p><p>"But how!" the Fox host exclaimed. "What are you going to do to Nieto? What are you going to say to him? 'Hey, you have to pay for the wall to the tune of $2 billion.' He's going to say, 'Hey, forget it!'"</p><p>But Trump wouldn't budge, and the two attempted to talk over one another. <p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></strong></p><p><strong>Warning: Mild spoilers ahead for "The Young Pope."</strong></p><p><span>If you've seen a commercial for "The Young Pope," I'd forgive you (and give you absolution) for thinking the show is about a&#xa0;woke millennial who turns the Catholic church upside down and provides free vape pens to all.</span></p><p><span>HBO's <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6we2blItR4s">advertisements</a> play up the edginess of the show. They make it look like like Pope Pius XIII - played by Jude Law - rejects the church's teachings and exerts his power, which ultimately puts the church at risk. He smokes cigarettes, snarls at his enemies, and gets into bitter feuds with archbishops.</span></p><p><span>That's not totally wrong, but it doesn't capture the true essence of the series.</span></p><h3><span>"The Young Pope" is like a beautiful, slower version of&#xa0;"House of Cards."</span></h3><p><span>"The Young Pope"&#xa0;reminds me of an arthouse project. </span><span>It's directed by&#xa0;Paolo Sorrentino, the Italian writer-director who's best known for directing "Il Divo," a biopic of former Italian Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti, and "The Great Beauty," a love letter to the city of Rome and homage&#xa0;to Roberto Rossellini's "Rome, Open City" and Federico Fellini's "La Dolce Vita."</span></p><p><span>Sorrentino also tends to premiere his movies at the Cannes Film Festival. So that's the kind of filmmaker you're dealing with.&#xa0;"The Young Pope" is&#xa0;more like "The Last Emperor" than "Deadpool." Also, about 20% of the dialogue is in Italian, which is rare for a show aired in the United States.</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>The show is a bit like "House of Cards," in the sense that it focuses on a political leader who exerts power ruthlessly. But while "House of Cards" is constantly&#xa0;engaged in a chess game&#xa0;of political maneuvers - who's double-crossing who, who knows what - "The Young Pope" is far more langurous. </span></p><p><span>There's a battle between Pius XIII and Cardinal&#xa0;Voiello, the Cardinal Secretary of State who struck the deal to install Pius in the papacy in the first place (played by Silvio Orlando), but the conflict is hardly as relentless or central to the show as it could be.&#xa0;</span><span>Sorrentino isn't afraid to indulge in&#xa0;languorous shots around the halls of </span>St. Peter's Basilica<span>, or have long scenes&#xa0;where the pope talks about faith with a cardinal.</span></p><p>Pius XIII is an idiosyncratic figure, and a lot of the show delves into his internal contradictions. He was abandoned by his parents as a child, so his history as an orphan and&#xa0;his relationship with Sister Mary, the nun who adopted him (played by Diane Keaton), is the show's central concern.&#xa0;</p><p>The position of pope is one of fatherhood for the Catholic Church - the word "pope" literally means "father" - so&#xa0;Pius has unusual ideas about what that means. Because&#xa0;his father abandoned him, he abandons the congregations, preferring to remain secluded within Vatican City&#xa0;and make the members of the Catholic Church go after him.</p><h3>Pius XIII's conservative views are a major plot point.</h3><p>As far as his values go, Pius isn't even moderately liberal -&#xa0;<span>despite his </span><a href="http://www.thisisinsider.com/who-was-the-youngest-pope-2017-1">relative</a><span> youth.</span>&#xa0;It's true that he smokes cigarettes, likes Daft Punk, and his preferred breakfast is a Cherry Coke Zero.
