According to WABetainfo, a website that tracks WhatsApp in Beta, the mobile messaging platform has dedicated a team to work on making the entire browser service more secure. "One would have to open WhatsApp on their smartphones and scan their fingerprint to initiate the web session of their PC," the report said on Thursday. The new way of logging into WhatsApp's web and desktop apps has some important advantages -- it's much more secure and a lot faster. It's not clear though if Face Unlock support will also be added in the future for devices that support 3D Face Unlocks. The current method of authentication involves using your phone's camera to scan an on-screen QR code to gain access to your account. In addition, WhatsApp is reportedly bringing a fix for a bug that caused the removal of recently used emojis after the app is updated. The feature has been spotted in WhatsApp 2.20.200.10 beta for Android updates. It may sound like the process is being made more ‘convenient’ but it essentially means that WhatsApp will be picking up your biometric data from your phone. While WhatsApp has a done a good job of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/what-india-needs-from-whatsapp-might-not-be-so-easily-attainable/articleshow/65497255.cms">standing up</a> to the Indian government by refusing to give out user data because of its end-to-end encryption, its parent company — Facebook — hasn’t been that lucky <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/miscellaneous/facebook-endured-a-staggering-number-of-scandals-and-controversies-in-2018-here-they-all-are/slidelist/67185624.cms">having to face</a> a US Congressional Committee. Even India is considering new regulations that will allow it to ask technology companies like WhatsApp to break end-to-end encryption in an attempt to filter out ‘unlawful content’. Even that was subtly put to rest when WhatsApp’s data backup <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/whatsapp-data-may-shift-to-the-cloud-but-may-no-longer-be-as-encrypted/articleshow/65475359.cms">shifted to cloud</a>, no longer necessitating end-to-end encryption of communication. More security or more vulnerability The fingerprint authentication feature is being presented as an extra layer of security on WhatsApp accounts. And, in its simplest definition, it is. But just like you trust a bank when you deposit your money, you have to trust WhatsApp when sharing any more information about your identity than you already do. And, at the end of day, it’s not WhatsApp that seems to be the issue but the fact that it’s owned by Facebook — a fact many forget as they claim to block Facebook on their phones and shut down their accounts. Data collection is a reality of the 21st century yet its implications have never been fully embraced. Not to mention that fingerprints have become as easy to steal as passwords. Logic states that your fingerprint is unique to you. So when you try to use them to log in anywhere, the computer knows that it’s you trying to gain access. But it’s only unique as long as nobody else manages to make a copy. In 2014, hackers working for the Chinese government and <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/24/world/asia/hackers-took-fingerprints-of-5-6-million-us-workers-government-says.html">made off</a> with the personal data of more than 22 million Americans from the Office of Personnel Management — 5.6 million of those people had their fingerprints on file. Researchers at the Michigan State University were able to <a href="https://msutoday.msu.edu/news/2018/machine-learning-masters-the-fingerprint-to-fool-biometric-systems/">print out</a> fake 3D fingerprints for less than $500. More tech-savvy researcher in Tokyo were able to <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/2017/01/12/peace-sign-selfies-could-let-hackers-copy-fingerprints/">reconstruct a fingerprint</a> based on somebody posing with the ‘peace sign’ fingers on a photo taken from a distance of nine feet. Michigan State University’s Philip Bontrager told <a href="https://msutoday.msu.edu/news/2018/machine-learning-masters-the-fingerprint-to-fool-biometric-systems/">USA Today</a>, “These experiments demonstrate the need for multi-factor authentication and should be a wake-up call for device manufacturers about the implications of artificial fingerprint attacks.” Facebook has been facing privacy issues since 2003 and is under pressure to prove its credibility as the world’s waits to see whether it upholds the standards set by Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Facebook’s trifles with privacy started out by leaking user data to online advertisers to help them understand their consumers — seemingly innocent in retrospect. WABetainfo, a website that tracks WhatsApp in Beta, has spotted Expiring Media as part of WhatsApp for Android's new beta version 2.20.201.1. This upcoming WhatsApp feature is similar to that found in <keyword id="6358096" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="snapchat">Snapchat</keyword>, which was later copied by Instagram. When this feature will be enabled, users will have an option to set expiration when they share media files, the report said. Those who will receive any "Expiring Media" can only view them for a single time and once they exit the chat, they will disappear without any trace unlike "This message was deleted" message when the sender deletes messages. The feature will be visible only to admins of a group. For individual chats, the feature will offer various options that the user can select for the app to automatically delete messages. WhatsApp will also show a ‘timer' symbol on the profile picture when the feature is enabled in a specific chat. Currently, there is no word on when exactly the feature will arrive for users or whether or not users will be able to screenshot the same. Once available, the earlier ‘Expiring Message' feature which is also in Beta currently will come with a toggle on/off button and users can choose a stipulated time -- 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week, 1 month or 1 year -- for the messages to automatically disappear. WhatsApp said the face and fingerprint authentication takes place on your device in a privacy preserving manner -- by design. "WhatsApp cannot access the biometric information stored by your device's operating system". The move comes at a time when WhatsApp is facing immense backlash in India over its upcoming privacy policy. In mid-January, it was found that WhatsApp on Desktop (Web) application was allegedly exposing personal mobile numbers via indexing on <keyword id="163945" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google-Search">Google Search</keyword>. Independent cybersecurity researcher Rajshekhar Rajaharia had shared some screenshots with IANS showing indexing of personal mobile numbers of WhatsApp users via Web version on Google Search. Concerned at private group chat links being available on Google Search, WhatsApp had earlier said that it asked Google not to index such chats and advised users not to share group chat links on publicly accessible websites. New Delhi, After hacking masked credit and debit card data of crores of Juspay users, the same hacker possibly known as '<keyword id="9206309" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="shinyhunters">ShinyHunters</keyword>' is now selling databases belonging to three more Indian companies on <keyword id="1929208" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="dark-web">Dark Web</keyword>, independent cyber security researcher Rajshekhar Rajaharia claimed on Wednesday. According to Rajaharia who first broke the JusPay hacking, the three Indian companies are e-marketplace <keyword id="2901238" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Clickindia">ClickIndia</keyword>, <keyword id="2461546" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="FinTech">fintech</keyword> startup for small business owners ChqBook and wedding planning website WedMeGood. "Nearly 80 lakh users of ClickIndia (name, email, mobile and other personal details), 10 lakh users of ChqBook (name, email, mobile, full address and other personal details) and 13 lakh users of WedMeGood (name, email, hashed password, other sensitive personal information)," Rajaharia told. Like JusPay, these three companies have also not allegedly told the users about the data breach, claimed the security researcher. The names of the three Indian companies were first reported by BleepingComputer website, saying that a "data breach broker is selling the allegedly stolen user records for 26 companies on a hacker forum". ChqBook denied the attack while the other two companies were yet to react to the report. "Simple data like email ID and phone number which may not look sensitive can turn out to be lethal means of financial fraud at personal level, if fallen in wrong hands," Jain told. Bengaluru-based digital payments gateway JusPay said in an earlier statement that the company verified that their Secure Data Store, which hosts the confidential card numbers, was not accessed or compromised. "Thus, all our customers were secure from any kind of risk. Our priority was to inform the merchants and as a measure of abundant precaution, they were issued fresh API keys though it was later verified that even the API keys in use were safe," the company said. According to Rajaharia, the hacker is the same who leaked <keyword id="964794" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BigBasket">BigBasket</keyword> data, previously reported by the cybersecurity firm Cyble. In November last year, one of India's popular online grocery stores BigBasket, found that its data of over 20 million users had been hacked and were on sale on the dark web for over $40,000. "Now, the same hacker group is asking about $10,000 in Bitcoin for the BigBasket database and is also selling the three companies' databases," Rajaharia said. "There is a strong connection between all these recent data leaks, including BigBasket," he added. US-based third-party cyber intelligence firm Cyble claimed in its official blog that though the alleged breach occurred on October 14, it detected it on October 30, validated it on October 31 and informed BigBasket on November 1. The user database was estimated to be about 20 million, with names, email ids, password hashes, pin, contact numbers, addresses, date of birth, location and IP addresses of login. JusPay on Tuesday said that about 3.5 crore records with masked card data and card fingerprint were compromised by the hacker and the claim of 10 crore cardholders' data being affected is "incorrect". That's good news for those who are wary of sharing that kind of data with a company. It works pretty well too, at least in my limited experience. But it'll be a few months before I'm able to decide if Apple Photos is a better option than Google Photos or something else.There's another feature I haven't been able to try but can't wait to use: copy and pasting between Mac and iPhone. There have been countless times I wish I could've easily copied a password from my iPhone to my Mac or a photo from my Mac to my iPhone. And probably a zillion other tiny scenarios over the years that I can't think about now. For some reason, iMessage never seems to work properly for me between my iPhone and Mac. Sometimes I'll get a message on my iPhone and not on my Mac. Sometimes it'll be the other way around. Sometimes they appear out of order on my Mac. And, inexplicably, whenever I log into a new Mac for the first time, none of my iMessages carry over. I have over two gigabytes of iMessages, and they always seem to appear when I log into a new iPhone, but never on Mac.That seems crazy considering Facebook Messenger, Telegram, WhatsApp, Twitter, and just about any other major service that offers private messaging are able to flawlessly sync no matter what device I use. Maybe it'll get better after that huge iMessage update hits iOS 10. Maybe.Those are just a few examples, but you can easily see that over the last few years, Apple has made a ton of progress with iCloud. It's not just about storing files, photos, and music online and syncing them across multiple devices. It's about making all those devices work together to make life easier.
