Its latest regulatory filing states that providing credit is one of its main business objectives.</li><li>This comes at a time when instant loans have become popular with companies like Amazon, Paytm and others have started offering these services.</li><li>WhatsApp’s massive user base in India gives it a great platform to launch revenue-generating services like digital loans.</li></ul>WhatsApp loans could be the next big feature for the popular messaging service. With India being one of the biggest markets for WhatsApp and instant loans gaining popularity, WhatsApp loans have the potential to take off. In a filing with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs accessed by <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2020/04/28/whatsapp-eyes-credit-feature-for-users-in-india/">TechCrunch</a>, WhatsApp has listed ‘providing credits or loans’ as one of its main business objectives to be pursued in India. WhatsApp’s parent company <keyword id="6354576" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="facebook">Facebook</keyword> recently entered into a partnership with <keyword id="6354504" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-jio">Reliance Jio</keyword>, acquiring a stake of 9.9% in a $5.7 billion deal. WhatsApp’s existing payments service, WhatsApp Pay, is yet to take off after more than two years of testing. Regulatory hurdles have played spoilsport in this regard, but WhatsApp has reportedly reached out to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) stating that it will ensure compliance with the local data protection laws by May. In January, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/india-whatsapp-pay-global-rollout-zuckerberg/articleshow/73760554.cms">Mark Zuckerberg said</a> that WhatsApp Pay will roll out in India within six months. Joining the dots, it seems plausible that it could launch by May. “This is an amazing partnership on the payments side. Whatsapp Pay did not have the commercial sides of it as Whatsapp was trying to creep into the business. Now, between Whatsapp, Instagram and Facebook — all the commerce can be done through Whatsapp Pay,” said Sud. Amazon Pay Later makes an entry in India Amazon has also launched its credit service called Pay Later. It allows users to purchase products on Amazon, pay utility bills, do recharges and more. Users can make the payment in the next month at no extra cost. The Amazon Pay Later feature is not available on products like gold, jewellery, Amazon Pay balance top-up and Amazon Pay gift cards. How will WhatsApp loans work? It is not clear as to how WhatsApp plans to offer loans and to which users. However, looking at other companies like Amazon, Paytm, or PayU which offers LazyPay, WhatsApp could offer a fixed credit limit to its users based on certain criteria. Users who avail WhatsApp credit could then be required to repay the amount due in a certain time period. For reference, services like LazyPay Pay Later allow you to make payments once in every 15 days, essentially giving you 15 days of interest-free loan. Paytm Postpaid works on a monthly basis – your credit bill is generated on the first of every month and you are given 7 days’ time to repay. For example, if you avail the credit facility on May 1, you will have to repay by June 7, giving you 36 days of interest-free credit. ICICI Bank launched WhatsApp banking services amid the Coronavirus lockdown

New Delhi, June 15 (IANS) WhatsApp Pay is on the cards for its over 400 millions users in India but before it becomes a mainstream mode of payment and mobile-based ecommerce, banks in India are already leveraging the app in helping digitally-inactive customers adopt WhatsApp as their first digital banking channel in the social distancing times. Today, WhatsApp has become a convenient and seamless channel for customers to interact with banks, which are providing a range of banking services through the platform. Kotak Mahindra Bank was one of the first banks in the country to launch banking services on WhatsApp in 2018. The bank has served nearly 20 lakh customers on its WhatsApp Banking channel to date, with a massive 98 per cent increase in the customer base accessing WhatsApp Banking in the financial year 2020 as compared to the last financial year. "Given that the majority of our customers are familiar with the WhatsApp interface, we found that many of our digitally inactive customers have adopted WhatsApp as their first digital banking channel," Deepak Sharma, President and Chief Digital Officer, Kotak Mahindra Bank, told IANS. Take the case of HDFC Bank which is using WhatsApp Business API as one of the key channels for engaging with the customers - from one way push messages such as on-boarding communication to new customers, information on product features and benefits, payment notifications and regulatory updates. "WhatsApp also helps in two-way customer support through access to more than 8,000 FAQs on bank's products and services, quick product application links and enquiry services," informed Anjani Rathor, Chief Digital Officer at HDFC Bank. According to Abhijit Bose, Head of WhatsApp India, the Business API is helping larger firms connect with their customers at scale. "Once customers opt-in or reach out to ask a question, merchants using the API can send notifications, receipts, and provide customer support. This helps brands foster deep and meaningful relationships with their customers, which can help their companies increase sales and grow," Bose told IANS. According to Sharma, Kotak Bank is using WhatsApp Banking channel for primarily two purposes. One is to send important alerts to customers such as EMI schedules and payment reminders etc. "We also send the digital welcome kit on opening an account to a customer on WhatsApp. "Two, we offer a range of banking services and answer customer queries on WhatsApp. There are some queries that get concluded on WhatsApp itself  this includes a range of bank account and credit card-related queries," he noted. Kotak Bank has also enabled services that are initiated on WhatsApp and then get executed on its website or Kotak's mobile banking app. This includes service requests such as updating mobile number, email ids, PAN, updating FATCA (the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act) declaration, cancelling NACH mandate, activating/deactivating passbook, deregistering printed statements, applying for a loan, credit card and opening an investment account, etc. The HDFC Bank is using artificial intelligence (AI)-driven conversational banking experience through WhatsApp Banking as well. "Some of the top queries from the customers on this platform circle around enquiries on existing accounts and cards, pre-approved offers and product eligibility, interest rates on loans and deposits and EMI moratorium guidelines, to name a few," informed Rathor. According to Bose, the current lockdown has magnified the critical need for businesses to have a digital presence. "Businesses that many people were previously accustomed to visiting in person -- a bank or grocery store, for example -- are finding WhatsApp to be especially useful for providing customers with support and useful information," said Bose. WhatsApp could soon introduce a paid subscription for multi-device support

A group of Indian origin Silicon Valley hotshots have joined the board of the financial technology firm <keyword id="2689416" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Deal4loans">Deal4Loans</keyword>, which provides loans through its online portal. 
 Among others, the group includes <keyword id="508899" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ram-Shriram">Ram Shriram</keyword>, founding board member and one of the first investors in Google, <keyword id="468884" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Neeraj-Arora">Neeraj Arora</keyword>, the business head of Whatsapp and <keyword id="3322410" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Puru-Vashishtha">Puru Vashishtha</keyword>, who had invested on Wall Street hedge funds. All three of them have also invested unknown amounts in the company. 
 Deal4Loans, founded by <keyword id="2034824" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rishi-Mehra">Rishi Mehra</keyword> in 2009, claims that it is the first of its kind when it comes to online loan comparison and booking. Mehra told ET told that it has seen a "hockey stick growth" in the last three years, having already booked Rs 10,000 crore in loans through its customer base of 7 million. 
 
"Its deep technology edge and algorithms attracted me to invest in the company. Digitisation of banks is a reality that Indian banks will have to adapt to," Shriram told ET via mail. 
 
He also added that digitisation would require banks to have a technology partner, something which Deal4loans is capable of being.

It will allow users to log in on a new device by clicking on the ‘Link a new device’ button. As per the report, WhatsApp recommends users to use a Wi-Fi connection while using the WhatsApp account on a secondary device. While it’s not clear why mobile data is not recommended, it’s possible that WhatsApp may copy all the messages and media on the new device. Messenger Rooms As people are stuck at home due to the coronavirus pandemic, Facebook recently introduced Messenger Rooms that allow users to quickly place a video call and invite your friends with a link. Yes, you read it right. <keyword id="6354630" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="mark-zuckerberg" source="Orion">Mark Zuckerberg</keyword> recently announced that the particular feature will be rolled out to Android users in the coming weeks and months, TechCrunch reported. "Helpful for switching between accounts - such as your work and personal - now you no longer need to log out each time, carry two phones or worry about messaging from the wrong place," the company said in a blog post. To set up a second account, you will need a second phone number and SIM card, or a phone that accepts multi-SIM or eSIM. Simply open your WhatsApp settings, click on the arrow next to your name, and click "Add account". This will allow you to manage two separate accounts within the app. While setting up, you will need your second phone with SIM or a phone with physical or eSIM facility for multi-SIM as you will have to authenticate your account while logging in. The company said that you will be able to manage separate notifications and privacy settings for each account. It is available on both WhatsApp beta and stable versions. WhatsApp now allows users to have two accounts on one phone within the app

The new home loan interest rates are linked to CIBIL score and start from 6.80 per cent for loans up to Rs 30 lakh and 6.95 per cent for loans above Rs 30 lakh, a bank release said. Women borrowers will get a <keyword id="44979" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="concession">concession</keyword> of 5 bps, it said. "With an aim to offer attractive concessions to the home buyers, country's largest lender SBI announces further interest concession of up to 30 bps on home loans and 100 per cent waiver on processing fees," the release said. The bank said interest concession of up to 30 bps is also available in eight metro cities for loans up to Rs 5 crore. Customers can also apply from the ease of their home via <keyword id="6961637" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="yono-app">YONO App</keyword> and get additional interest concession of 5 bps, the release said. "We are pleased to improve our concessions to prospective home loan customers up to March 2021," the bank's managing director (retail and digital banking), C S Setty, said. The lender's eligible existing home loan borrowers can also avail a paperless pre-approved top-up home loan through the YONO App, he added. SBI offers discounts on home loans, waives of processing fees

<keyword id="790242" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="WhatsApp">WhatsApp</keyword> on Thursday launched the much-awaited 'Disappearing Messages on its platform for both Android and iOS users that will automatically delete new messages sent to a chat after seven days when turned on. In a one-to-one chat, either person can turn disappearing messages on or off. In groups, admins will have the control on the new feature. "Our goal is to make conversations on WhatsApp feel as close to in-person as possible, which means they shouldn't have to stick around forever. That's why we're excited to introduce the option to use disappearing messages on WhatsApp," the company said in a statement. The Facebook-owned platform is starting with the seven-day limit "because we think it offers peace of mind that conversations aren't permanent, while remaining practical so you don't forget what you were chatting about". The feature will be rolling out to over two billion active users globally this month. The platform has over 400 million users in India. Once enabled, new messages sent in the individual or group chat will disappear after seven days. The most recent selection controls all messages in the chat. "This setting won't affect messages you previously sent or received in the chat. In an individual chat, either user can turn disappearing messages on or off. In a group chat, only group admins can turn disappearing messages on or off," WhatsApp informed. If a user doesn't open WhatsApp in the seven-day period, the message will disappear. However, the preview of the message might still be displayed in notifications until WhatsApp is opened. "When you reply to a message, the initial message is quoted. If you reply to a disappearing message, the quoted text might remain in the chat after seven days". If a disappearing message is forwarded to a chat with disappearing messages off, the message won't disappear in the forwarded chat. "If a user creates a backup before a message disappears, the disappearing message will be included in the backup. Disappearing messages will be deleted when a user restores from a backup," WhatsApp explained. WhatsApp said that people should only use disappearing messages with trusted individuals. For example, it's possible for someone to forward or take a screenshot of a disappearing message and save it before it disappears. "Copy and save content from the disappearing message before it disappears. Take a photo of a disappearing message with a camera or other device before it disappears," the company advised. By default, media you receive in WhatsApp will be automatically downloaded to your photos. If disappearing messages are turned on, media sent in the chat will disappear, but will be saved on the phone if auto-download is on. WhatsApp launches new tool that makes week-old unread messages disappear

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="790242" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="WhatsApp">WhatsApp</keyword> rival <keyword id="6380504" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="signal">Signal</keyword> got a huge boost in user numbers this month.</li><li>Employees are worried Signal isn't doing enough to prevent misuse of its platform, such as by heading off <keyword id="139533" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="extremism">extremism</keyword>, according to a report by The Verge.</li><li>Rival encrypted messaging company <keyword id="1275203" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Telegram">Telegram</keyword> is also under fire for allowing hate speech on its app.</li></ul>Employees at encrypted-messaging app Signal are worried that an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/whatsapp-facebook-data-signal-download-telegram-encrypted-messaging-2021-1">explosion in growth</a> - prompted by users moving over from rival WhatsApp - could cause extremism to spread on the platform, according to a new report from <a href="https://www.theverge.com/22249391/signal-app-abuse-messaging-employees-violence-misinformation?scrolla=5eb6d68b7fedc32c19ef33b4">The Verge</a>.An engineer called Gregg Bernstein, who left Signal this month, told the Verge that Signal's CEO Moxie Marlinspike was worryingly passive at the prospect of extremists using the platform to organize. "It's not only that Signal doesn't have these policies in place. But they've been resistant to even considering what a policy might look like," said Bernstein.He said that after President Donald Trump told the far-right extremist group the Proud Boys to "stand back and stand by," Marlinspike was asked at a company all-hands meeting how Signal planned to prevent extremists from organizing on the app."The response was: if and when people start abusing Signal or doing things that we think are terrible, we'll say something [...] You could see a lot of jaws dropping. Marlinspike told the Verge he wanted to take a hands-off approach to moderating the app because it was a messaging platform, not social media."The overriding theme there is that we don't want to be a media company. We're not algorithmically amplifying content. We don't have access to the content. And even within the app, there are not a lot of opportunities for amplification," he said.Marlinspike said he believed the benefit Signal gives to activists and dissidents outweighed the risk that extremists might use it."I want us as an organization to be really careful about doing things that make Signal less effective for those sort of bad actors if it would also make Signal less effective for the types of actors that we want to support and encourage [...] Because I think that the latter have an outsized risk profile. There's an asymmetry there, where it could end up affecting them more dramatically," he said.Downloads of the app surged after WhatsApp informed users of changes to terms of service related to messaging business accounts. WhatsApp scrambled to explain that its data sharing practices with Facebook, its parent company, weren't changing, and that the new terms and conditions did not affect messaged to friends and family - but by then many users had already downloaded Signal.Signal isn't the only encrypted messaging app facing accusations of inaction over hate speech.Former US ambassador Marc Ginsberg on Monday <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-google-alphabet-telegram-app-store-2021-1">filed lawsuits against Apple and Google</a>, petitioning them both to boot encrypted messaging app Telegram - which also received a big user boost from the WhatsApp exodus - off their app stores.Ginsberg said the platform had harbored extremists, and pointed to the fact <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-threatens-parler-ban-over-alleged-role-in-coup-attempt-2021-1">both Apple and Google banned Parler</a>, a social media app popular with the far-right, from their stores.Insider found that far-right users <a href="https://www.insider.com/telegram-far-right-is-searching-for-its-new-home-online-2021-1">migrated to messaging platforms including Telegram</a> following the US Capitol riot.

As Signal downloads surge, employees are reportedly worried the messaging app isn't doing enough to head off extremism

Top cryptocurrency broker <keyword id="14344592" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="voyager-digital" source="Orion">Voyager Digital</keyword> on Wednesday filed for bankruptcy in the US, after top crypto hedge fund <keyword id="14202326" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="three-arrows-capital" source="Orion">Three Arrows Capital</keyword> (3AC) did the same last week, in which Voyager has made significant investments which the company is yet to get back. It had significant investments in Singapore-based hedge fund 3AC, which failed to make payments on a loan of 15,250 Bitcoins and $350 million USDCs -- that makes the loan worth more than $650 million. "This comprehensive reorganisation is the best way to protect assets on the platform and maximize value for all stakeholders, including customers," said <keyword id="495840" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="stephen-ehrlich" source="Orion">Stephen Ehrlich</keyword>, CEO of Voyager. The prolonged volatility and contagion in the crypto markets over the past few months, and "the default of Three Arrows Capital on a loan from the company's subsidiary, Voyager Digital, require us to take deliberate and decisive action now," he said in a statement. Earlier this week, Voyager suspended all trading, deposits, withdrawals and loyalty rewards on its platform. Voyager has approximately $1.3 bn of crypto assets on the platform and more than $350 million of cash for customers. The proposed plan of reorganisation "contemplates an opportunity for customers to elect the proportion of common equity and crypto they will receive, subject to certain maximum thresholds", said the company. The company said it has over $110 million of cash and owned crypto assets on hand, which will provide liquidity to support day-to-day operations. Voyager said it was actively pursuing all available remedies for recovery from 3AC. The development came as popular crypto tokens such as <keyword id="12177405" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bitcoin-and-ethereum" source="Orion">Bitcoin and Ethereum</keyword> nosedived by nearly 70 per cent from their record highs amid the economic meltdown. The <keyword id="167953" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="monetary-authority-of-singapore" source="Orion">Monetary Authority of Singapore</keyword> last week slammed Three Arrows for providing false information and breaching an asset under management threshold. The mega fund, founded by Credit Suisse traders Zhu Su and Kyle Davies, once managed an estimated $10 billion in assets.
