With an aim to make the messaging platform more user friendly, Meta-owned WhatsApp has announced that it is rolling out new features, including emoji reactions, bigger files and groups. The company said that it is slowly rolling out the ability to add up to 512 people to a group, which, till now, allowed to add only up to 256. "We are excited to share that emoji reactions are now available on the latest version of the app. Reactions are fun, fast, and they reduce overload in groups too. We will continue improving them by adding an even broader range of expressions in the future," the company said in a blogpost. "In addition, you can now send files within WhatsApp up to 2GB in size at a time, protected by end-to-end encryption. This is an increase from the previous limit of 100MB and we think will be helpful for collaboration among small businesses and school groups," it added. WhatsApp said it recommends using WiFi for larger files and it will display a counter while uploading or downloading to let users know how long your transfer will take. A recent report said that WhatsApp is likely working on the ability to view status updates right within the chats list in a future update of the app. This feature is under development so it has not been rolled out to beta testers yet. WhatsApp update brings emoji reactions, groups with 512 members

In India, WhatsApp have launched a new privacy feature that opens a new chapter in the conversation around consent. Even after the latest update, the feature might be available on everyone’s phone yet but it has started to rollout and will be available globally within the next few weeks. One of the main issues, that even the Indian government pointed out, was that if an invite is sent randomly, users are automatically added to a group regardless of whether they want to be a part of it. But with the new filter, users can go into their privacy settings and choose to only accept invites from ‘nobody’, ‘only contacts’ or ‘everyone’. The only option that’s lacking is the feasibility to create a custom list of contacts that are allowed to send WhatsApp group invites like the ‘only share with’ setting for Whatsapp Status updates. Just in case administrators want to send out an invite to someone who is inaccessible due to the new filters, they can still share a group invite link through chat messages. But WhatsApp group invites have a 72 hour, or 3 day, expiry after which the link will no longer allow the invitee to join the group. WhatsApp has been working diligently towards finding measures that reduce the incidence of spam invites like introducing group descriptions. The additional setting also adds to the already existing feature where group administrators can choose to bar normal participants from sending messages on the group without excluding them from the chat.

"WhatsApp is rolling out the new limit of participants in groups calls, for iOS and Android beta users. The new limit is: 8 participants in group calls," tweeted WABetaInfo. One need to install the 2.20.50.25 iOS beta update from TestFlight and the 2.20.133 beta from Google Play Store. Other participants also need to be on the same versions otherwise they cannot be added in the group call. While you're in a call, WhatsApp also shows a new header, informing that the call is end-to-end encrypted. Late last month, 70 per cent more people participated in group video calls using Facebook Messenger week-over-week, and the amount time spent on those group video calls has doubled globally. Similarly, voice and video calls on WhatsApp have more than doubled year-over-year in the places most impacted by the virus. WhatsApp group calls limit extended to 8 users

<ul><li><keyword id="6360667" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="madras-high-court" source="Orion">Madras High Court</keyword> reiterated that <keyword id="790242" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="whatsapp" source="Orion">WhatsApp</keyword> <keyword id="4484267" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="group-admin" source="Orion">group admin</keyword> are not liable for member’s posts.</li><li>Justice GR Swaminathan referred to a similar judgement given by the <keyword id="48485" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bombay-high-court" source="Orion">Bombay High Court</keyword> before giving his orders.</li><li>The Court asked the respondent to bear in mind the ruling of the Bombay High Court.</li></ul>The Madurai bench of the Madras High Court reiterated the Bombay High Court’s finding of a previous case that a <keyword id="6407380" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="whatsapp-group" source="Orion">WhatsApp group</keyword> administrator cannot be held liable for objectionable content posted by members of the groups. Justice GR Swaminathan referred to the <a href="https://www.barandbench.com/news/litigation/whatsapp-group-administrator-no-vicarious-liability-content-group-member-bombay-high-court">Kishore v. State Maharashtra</a> of the Bombay High Court which ruled that a WhatsApp group admin must be deleted from the list of accused if he did not play any part in the crime committed by group members other than being an admin. However, the Court also held that if another material is gathered that shows the admin being involved in the crime, he may be tried according to the law. The order was given on a plea that seeks to cancel a First Information Report (FIR) against the group admin in which offensive messages were circulated by a member that could cause animosity between communities. The petition claimed that the petitioner was only the administrator of the WhatsApp group and he could not be held responsible for the messages sent by the group members. As per the complainant, the petitioner lacked honesty, claiming that there was a conspiracy between the group admin and the member since the member was first removed from the group and then re-added. The Court disposed of the complaint and asked the respondent to bear in mind the ruling of the Bombay High Court in Kishore vs. State Maharashtra, where a similar case on the liability of a WhatsApp group admin was discussed. In that ruling, the Bombay High Court had held, “a group administrator cannot be held vicariously liable for an act of a member of the group, who posts objectionable content unless it is shown that there was a common intention or pre-arranged plan acting in concert pursuant to such plan by such member of a Whatsapp group and the administrator.” The Bombay High Court also stated that the group admin had limited powers of adding and deleting members and cannot be expected to have advanced knowledge of what the members of the group may post. In light of the above order, the Madras High Court judge declared that if the petitioner's only role in the case was that of a group admin, then the name must be deleted from the chargesheet. Madras High Court reaffirms that WhatsApp group admin isn’t liable for a member’s posts

Users will be able to create community chats just like the current groups. It is also protected by end-to-end encryption. The icon of the community is slightly different from groups. It has a squared icon with rounded edges, unlike groups that have a round icon. This has probably been done to easily differentiate between groups and communities. As per the report, admins will be able to send messages in these communities and create a collection of groups related to the community. This might be particularly useful for businesses and educational institutions as it will allow them to create communities for departments or classes. Communities are expected to offer more control to admins, allowing them to control who can message, who can join which group and more. Similar to groups, admins will be able to add members to the community using their contact or by simply sharing a joining link or QR code with them. WhatsApp may soon introduce Communities, offer more control to admins

WhatsApp is being asked to revise its policy on ‘groups’ after multiple complaints of consent violation

WhatsApp working on a ‘Community’ feature that could co-exist with Groups

Users will be able to select a title, date and time for their call, making sure that everyone in the group is aware of when it will take place, reports WABetaInfo. How to stop others from adding you in a WhatsApp group

<ul><li>The <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> has issued new directives to its officers to limit the usage of WhatsApp and social media platforms.</li><li>The Army claims that WhatsApp is being used a method for foreign intelligence agencies to profile officers and their families.</li><li>Family members of Indian Army officers have also been asked to remove references to serving members and photos of officers in uniform from social media.</li></ul>The Indian Army has issued <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/shun-big-social-media-groups-army-to-staff/articleshow/70135817.cms">new guidelines</a> for its officers and their social media usage. The news comes after reports of Pakistani intelligence using these platforms to profile Army officers and their families. They've asked officers to be en guard for unknown phone numbers on WhatsApp groups and third party contacts in Facebook communities who might try and gain sensitive information about movements of official forces. The two page directive issued to the 1.3 million officers of the Army advises them against joining large WhatsApp groups and communities on other social media platforms, where the identity of many of the participants in unknown. Even families of the Army officers have been advised to remove all references to serving members and remove photos of officers in uniform from their profiles. In order to make sure that these guidelines are met, the Army has said that they can spot check mobile phones and other personal devices at any time. Violation of regulations that leads to the leakage of sensitive information could result in the court martial of the officers responsible. Foreign threat In the past, foreign intelligence operatives have reportedly used ‘<a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/mail-today/story/indian-army-takes-steps-to-prevent-honey-trapping-of-soldiers-by-isi-operatives-1434829-2019-01-20">honey traps</a>’ to lure in officers with fake social media profiles guised as women to extract sensitive information. More recently, a senior officer within the Army was <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/mail-today/story/indian-army-takes-steps-to-prevent-honey-trapping-of-soldiers-by-isi-operatives-1434829-2019-01-20">blackmailed</a> to click on a malware link. The email threatened the officer with leaking a video of his daughter should he fail to follow instructions. "Enemy intelligence operatives are keeping a close watch on the Whatsapp groups and trying to profile our officers and their families. They have even managed to enter some Whatsapp groups and quietly monitor conversations between officers," Army sources told <a href="https://www.dnaindia.com/india/report-amid-threat-from-pakistani-spy-agencies-army-imposes-whatsapp-restrictions-2769871">ANI</a>. Just last month, detectives with the Uttar Pradesh Police and Military Intelligence (MI) found Pakistani spy bots <a href="https://www.gadgetsnow.com/slideshows/pakistan-spy-hack-revisiting-whatsapp-security-tips-issued-by-indian-army/-Pakistan-spy-hack-Revisiting-WhatsApp-security-tips-issued-by-Indian-Army/photolist/69870956.cms">trying to hack</a> into over 98 official computer system from defence forces and organisations in India — including the Indian Army, the Indian Air Force, paramilitary forces and state police. They were able to determine that the perpetrator went by ‘Sejal Kapoor’ on Facebook and used spy apps called ‘Whisper’ and ‘Gravity Rat’ to try and access official accounts. While Army asserts that this is a move to keep information safe, some feel that its a measure designed to curb criticism of the Army and limit the free exchange of views between active Army officers and veterans — like conversations around tax disability pensions. Others end up being a bit of a nuisance, especially if they're spamming your notifications. WhatsApp's new privacy feature now allows you to block certain, or all, contacts from adding you to groups. Contacts on the block list will still be able to inform you about a new group but only through an invite link, which expires in three days — they won't be able to add you to any group directly without your consent. The update includes a new user interface (UI) for calling and joining an ongoing group call without the users having to call again. As per a <a href="https://wabetainfo.com/whatsapp-is-bringing-improvements-for-calls/">report in WABetaInfo</a>, these features are being rolled out for users running beta version 2.21.140.11, starting July 13, 2021. The new joinable call feature will enable users to join video or voice group calls without asking other participants to add them again. If you happen to ignore a group call at first, you can still join the ongoing call while it’s on. <div type="image" title="Tap to join" msid="84368929" hostid="261"></div> WhatsApp may prompt an alert to quickly join the call. You can find an ongoing call with a “Tap to join” banner in the ‘Calls’ tab and a “Join call” button in the group chat where the call is started. These buttons will help you identify group calls that you have missed and join them with ease even when they have started without you. Another upcoming WhatsApp feature for beta testers is the new calling UI, which looks similar to that of Apple’s Facetime. The new UI offers you options you might be looking for during a call and comes with a “Ring” button. New Delhi, Apr 16 () Online food delivery, the silver lining to the economic gloom set in by the coronavirus pandemic, is likely to take a massive blow in the capital after news of a pizza delivery agent testing COVID-19 positive in south Delhi went viral and raised alarm bells in the minds of the already terrified people.A total of 89 people have been put under quarantine after a 19-year-old delivery agent from a restaurant in Malviya Nagar tested positive for the virus on April 14. Many Delhitees on Thursday woke up to a barrage of messages on their WhatsApp groups strictly advising them not to order food from outside anymore."Our area is largely an open colony, so we cannot check everybody who is coming in. We have circulated the news clippings in the whatsapp groups, with a message: "Bhai, thode din ghar ka bana hi kha lo. Fizool main quarantine hone ka koi faida nahi hai" (Please for some days eat home-made food only, you won't be serving any purpose being quarantined due to this)," BS Vohra, East-Delhi RWAs Joint Front told ."We have been talking about this news in the RWA whatsapp group since morning, but we don't know how to stop this. The government can perhaps take some steps, or at least instruct us to deploy some measures," he added.While many had already bid goodbye to outside food after the lockdown was announced on March 24, there were others who couldn't resist the temptation for a meal from a restaurant at least on a few days.But not anymore as they realise that hassle-free not always translates into risk-free, especially amid a global pandemic."My daughter is a big foodie. She would always pester me to order momos or burgers for outside. Many times I would try to entice her with home-made snacks. But it won't always work. So there were days when we ordered food online. "Today when I watched this news of the delivery agent getting infected, I made it clear to my daughter that we won't be ordering online from now. She understood and agreed," said Vandana Thapa, a homemaker in her 40s.Looking at the severity of the situation and fearing a dip in their online orders, food delivery platforms and several restaurants have reached out to their customers to reassure them of all the precautions taken at their end for their safety and well-being.Zomato, the online platform service whose partner restaurant's delivery agent has tested positive in this incident, said they are constantly training their delivery partners on safety and hygiene in addition to providing masks to them."Fifty thousand plus restaurants which cover a majority of our order volume have set up hand sanitisation stations for delivery partners. We continue to ramp up our safety practices as we speak," a Zomato spokesperson told .The food delivery platform on Wednesday launched a new safety feature where users can see the body temperature of their delivery partner on its app.That said, they did acknowledge that despite "best efforts'' home deliveries of essential services like food and grocery cannot be "risk-free"."Customers should be cognisant of the risks involved and follow careful package handling practices if they are getting anything home delivered," he added.Pizza giant Domino's or restaurants like The Baker's Dozen, Out Of The Blue and Deli By The Blue also reassured their customers by listing out all the safety measures in place."Understanding the current situation, we have taken some important measures for our staff and senior members and have made them stay quarantined at Hotel Le Sutra to maintain the utmost care and cleanliness discipline," said Rahul Bajaj, director and conceptualiser at Out Of The Blue and Deli By The Blue.But the fear that the incident would dent the food industry business further was palpable among many restauranteurs. According to Karan Tanna, founder of Ghost Kitchens, there would be a drop of more than 50 per cent in people ordering food online. The sector had already seen a drastic drop due to the spread of coronavirus.Anurag Katriar, president, National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI), too took notice of the event and admitted of "some impact of the incident on the consumer's mind".However, Katriar used the analogy that like medical professionals, anyone working on ground zero can contract the virus and that it was no different for the delivery agent in question."Ideally, if medical services are not getting impacted when their staff is infected, this incident should not impact the restaurant deliveries either, but in the minds of the people the essentiality of the two services is different and rightly so."We have been very steadfast in our advisories to the restaurants, which was reiterated last evening that they need to follow the strictest form of hygiene with services and as well as goods," he added.The novel coronavirus has infected more than 12,300 people and claimed at least 400 lives.
