<keyword id="790242" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="WhatsApp">WhatsApp</keyword> is reportedly working on a new 'Expiring Media' feature that will let users send self-destructing media on the popular messaging app. The upcoming ‘Expiring Media' feature is an extension to another under-development feature called 'Expiring Messages'. WABetainfo, a website that tracks WhatsApp in Beta, has spotted Expiring Media as part of WhatsApp for Android's new beta version 2.20.201.1. This upcoming WhatsApp feature is similar to that found in <keyword id="6358096" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="snapchat">Snapchat</keyword>, which was later copied by Instagram. When this feature will be enabled, users will have an option to set expiration when they share media files, the report said. Those who will receive any "Expiring Media" can only view them for a single time and once they exit the chat, they will disappear without any trace unlike "This message was deleted" message when the sender deletes messages. The feature will be visible only to admins of a group. For individual chats, the feature will offer various options that the user can select for the app to automatically delete messages. WhatsApp will also show a ‘timer' symbol on the profile picture when the feature is enabled in a specific chat. Currently, there is no word on when exactly the feature will arrive for users or whether or not users will be able to screenshot the same. Once available, the earlier ‘Expiring Message' feature which is also in Beta currently will come with a toggle on/off button and users can choose a stipulated time -- 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week, 1 month or 1 year -- for the messages to automatically disappear. How to use WhatsApp Status, the messaging app's 'stories' feature for sharing ephemeral content

Since then, internet services have been largely suspended in the Kashmir valley as the Narendra Modi government feared a backlash from the locals for its decision. While unsuspecting Kashmiris kept on clamouring for the restoration of data services in the valley, they have been hit by another shocker. Kashmiris started exiting WhatsApp group en masse, prompting their friends and family in other parts of the country to share screenshots on social media. Several Twitter users <a href="https://twitter.com/soprich2/status/1202285061728538624?s=20">voiced</a> their concern sharing <a href="https://twitter.com/DrKaloo/status/1202305711025184769">screenshots</a> showing that several users have left the groups.

However, there is a simple explanation for this. In a statement to BuzzFeed News, a Facebook spokesperson revealed that the accounts have been deactivated as part of WhatsApp’s policy on inactive accounts and there is nothing suspicious about it. “To maintain security and limit data retention, WhatsApp accounts generally expire after 120 days of inactivity”, said the spokesperson. He added, "When that happens, those accounts automatically exit their WhatsApp groups. People will need to be re-added to groups upon regaining access to the Internet and joining WhatsApp again.” Facebook has not revealed the number of users affected by this policy. Users whose accounts have been deactivated will have to re-register on WhatsApp and join these groups again. No mention of 120 days policy on WhatsApp According to messaging app’s FAQ page, WhatsApp assumes that if your account is inactive for 45 days, you must have stopped using that number, and another user must have obtained it via the mobile service provider. For security purposes, WhatsApp removes account data to make sure the new user of the number cannot misuse it but it does not explicitly say that the inactive account will be deleted. He thinks a privacy-first platform will, over time, become more important than today's open settings. "Privacy gives people the freedom to be themselves and connect more naturally, which is why we build social networks," he said.</li><li>Beyond the technical requirements needed to ensure more private conversations, Zuckerberg said his team will need to focus on features that provide a sense of closeness, like how in WhatsApp today the number of people in groups is limited. He says Facebook's products can often feel "more like a town square than a more intimate space like a living room."</li><li>Facebook will work toward end-to-end encryption for all private communications, Zuckerberg said, but the decentralization of data doesn't come without its concerns. Zuckerberg highlighted cases where private messages can lead to "terrible things" like child exploitation, terrorism, and extortion." Still, he believes encryption will be important for his team to get right. To do so, Zuckerberg also said Facebook will have to strike a balance of working with governments and law enforcement agencies when user data is requested.</li><li>So that what people share doesn't "come back to hurt them later," Zuckerberg said the team will move towards reducing permeance messages, similar to how Stories expire after 24 hours. "I believe there's an opportunity to set a new standard for private communication platforms -- where content automatically expires or is archived over time," he said.</li><li>Zuckerberg also said he envisions "interoperability," where users across Facebook's suite of messaging apps (Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram's Direct) can reach their friends using whichever app they prefer. Eventually, he imagines SMS will work seamlessly across the company platforms as well.</li><li>Regarding where user data is stored, Zuckerberg says the company will not build data centers in countries with "a track record of violating human rights like privacy or freedom of expression," as doing so could open the door for those governments to access people's information. Zuckerberg said he is willing to take a stand on this point, even if it means that Facebook gets blocked in certain countries.</li><li>No definite timeline was provided for when these changes will rollout across Facebook products, though the chief exec said these changes would come "over the next few years" and that "a lot of this work is in the early stages."</li><li>For Zuckerberg, a focus on privacy appears to be his top priority for the company moving forward. "I believe we should be working towards a world where people can speak privately and live freely knowing that their information will only be seen by who they want to see it and won't all stick around forever," he said. A new love interest, my now wife, who's German, was getting her master's degree and living in Austria. My wife and I married in 2021, and after applying for residence in Austria, I received a letter indicating that I had to leave.During the pandemic, Mexico was one of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-americans-have-been-escaping-to-mexico-during-the-pandemic-2021-2">few countries that kept its borders open</a>. Friends, who were fellow digital nomads, suggested we consider moving to Guanajuato, Mexico.<h2>Guanajuato welcomed me and my wife with open arms</h2>During our six-month tourist visa, Guanajuato equated to a level of ease and connection I hadn't experienced before. We quickly became part of an eclectic community that felt like a chosen family and experienced unprecedented hospitality from people of all ages and backgrounds.In 2022, my wife and I got a <a target="_blank" href="https://consulmex.sre.gob.mx/leamington/index.php/non-mexicans/visas/115-temporary-resident-visa">four-year temporary resident visa</a> and officially became residents in Mexico — as opposed to long-stay tourists. I'd spent extended periods in Mexico before moving here, so not much came as a surprise about the process. But I learned that renting a place to live in Mexico is a million times easier once you're on the ground. There are signs with WhatsApp numbers on properties for rent everywhere that helped simplify things.The transition went smoothly, and I wouldn't change anything.<h2>I also learned about the world of "fixers"</h2>There's a whole industry of people whose only job is to<a target="_blank" href="https://mexiconewsdaily.com/mexico-living/fixers-make-life-in-mexico-easier/"> make immigrants' lives easier</a> by helping with things like opening bank accounts, extending residency visas, buying a car, driving your pets cross country while you fly, etc.We spent around $290 for fixer support with renewing our residency visas, which included early morning pick-up services, an hour's drive to the National Institute of Migration, being on hand for our interview if we needed help, and driving us back home with our extensions in hand. Also, when we bought a car, we used what could be considered a fixer service.<h2>Since making this move, my business has grown tremendously</h2>This stability has allowed me to focus more intently on my business and spend more time learning and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-start-and-grow-a-business-founders-advice-2023-1">implementing growth strategies</a>. Being in a time zone that closely aligns with most of my clients and collaborators in the US has been a game changer. I've been able to increase my frequency of launches, produce more social media content, and spend more time refining processes.Without the constant need to adapt to new environments, I've reclaimed a considerable amount of time and mental energy that was previously spent on life logistics like securing reliable wifi, finding suitable accommodations, etc.<h2>Living here has encouraged me to embrace a more laidback lifestyle</h2>I've found it easy to strike up conversations with interesting strangers who turn into friends just from walking around town. Mexico has a bit of everything.<h2>There are things I haven't liked so much</h2>Mexico isn't known for being quiet. There's lots of street noise and incessant dog barking. However, there are many great organizations in Mexico, like <a target="_blank" href="https://amigosanimalesgto.org/es/">Amigos de los Animales</a>, working hard to change attitudes through education programs.I also try to put a positive spin on these things. The noise can be annoying, but it's a reminder of the sense of community and life that happens outside the home here. Also, the animal issues are at times heartbreaking but create opportunities to be a part of the change.<h2>We have a home base to come back to that feels good</h2>For me and my wife, nothing is forever. <ul class="summary-list"><li>A group of UK traders accused of <keyword id="13620325" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="market-manipulation" source="Orion">market manipulation</keyword> and making $700 million from the 2020 <keyword id="11896879" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="oil" source="Orion">oil</keyword> price collapse will go to trial, reports said.</li><li>WhatsApp messages between the "<keyword id="13620324" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="essex-boys" source="Orion">Essex Boys</keyword>" apparently showed them discussing how to push oil futures prices down.</li></ul>A group of UK traders known as the "Essex Boys" will face trial in the United States over the crash in the oil market in 2020 that netted them $700 million, according to media reports on Wednesday.A US district court judge has given the green light for a case to proceed against eight traders from Vega Capital London, a fund whose employees were largely based in the eastern English region of Essex, for manipulation of crude oil futures, according to court documents and Britain's Guardian <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/business/2022/apr/13/essex-boys-oil-price-manipulation-trial">newspaper</a>.A lawyer for Vega Capital did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider.On April 20, 2020, oil <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/negative-oil-prices-mean-producers-pay-people-to-take-oil-2020-4?utm_medium=ingest&amp;utm_source=markets&amp;r=US&amp;IR=T">plummeted into negative territory</a> for the first time as the Covid pandemic sent demand for fuel plunging and caused an oversupply of unused fuel in the market that threatened to overwhelm existing US storage facilities. <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/commodities/oil-price?type=wti">WTI</a> oil crashed to -$40 in the run-up to the benchmark monthly futures contract expiring. It subsequently recovered and is now currently trading at around $103 per barrel.According to the suit, several of the traders' transactions on April 20 were "highly correlated," with between 96.2% and 99.7% moving "in the same direction at the very same time." Between 1 and 1:30 p.m., when the market closed, the eight traders were apparently responsible for 29.2% of the total volume in WTI crude oil futures, according to court documents, as <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-04-13/-please-don-t-tell-essex-boys-texts-spur-judge-to-allow-suit">reported by Bloomberg</a>.The documents showed that on that day, one of the traders sent their colleagues a WhatsApp message saying, "We pushed each other so hard for years for this one moment…" with another trader messaging to say, "Please don't tell anyone what happened today lads x."Other messages had one trader saying, "Just keep selling it every 5 points," with another saying, "You've just got to keep selling.""I wanna see negative WTI prices," another trader said, according to the court documents."The content of their communications, along with the high degree of correlative trading among most of them, give rise to a highly plausible inference of an agreement among them," judge Gary Feinerman wrote in his order, which included excerpts of messages between the traders, according to <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-04-13/-please-don-t-tell-essex-boys-texts-spur-judge-to-allow-suit">Bloomberg</a>.The lawsuit against the traders was brought by US coin, metals and jewellery dealer Mish International Monetary, which said it lost money when the price tumbled. It was struggling with negative consumer sentiments and a drop in sales even before <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">Coronavirus</keyword> hit the world, bringing it to a standstill. China accounts for a whooping 27% of India’s auto part imports. However, if reports are to be believed, experts expect things to get better closer to the festive season. Having said that, how consumers react to the situation is something that we will need to wait and watch. To understand how the auto industry has been reacting and coping with the current situation, we reached out to Tata Motors. Vivek Srivatsa, Head – Marketing, Passenger Vehicle Business Unit, Tata Motors, Ashesh Dhar, Head – Sales, Marketing and Customer Care, Electric Mobility Business Unit, Tata Motors and UT Ramprasad, General Manager, Marketing Communications, Commercial Vehicle Business Unit, Tata Motors gave us a sense of all that has been happening at the organization and how the brand will adapt to the changing times and consumer needs. Excerpts: Q) The auto industry had been witnessing a slump even before the Covid <keyword id="91743" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="lockdown">lockdown</keyword> came about. With showrooms closed for over a month now, how have you modified your marketing strategies during these times? At Tata Motors, we have been constantly working towards staying in touch with our customers during this difficult time. Since the lockdown was announced, our business units have been actively engaging with our customers on various platforms. For instance, our call centre executives, product specialists and dealer staffs are constantly engaging with potential buyers through phone calls, WhatsApp video calls, messages and emails to provide them with essential information during these times. Similarly, we have launched Click to Drive, which is an end-to-end digital sales initiative by us, that has taken our entire passenger vehicle product sales online. This initiative will help customers buy cars from the safety and comfort of their homes. It has been integrated with all Tata Motors dealers from more than 750 outlets across the country and will also offer vehicle home delivery for our customers at a later date. We are also providing our customers with attractive, limited period offers on their purchases in addition to facilitating up to 100% on road funding on our entire range of cars and SUVs. Customers can also take advantage of the long tenure EMI schemes (up to 8 years) thus lowering the amount of their monthly EMI payment. The option of customising EMI payments every year in line with their cash flows offers additional convenience and enhances benefits. Additionally, to thank and support the brave COVID frontline warriors (doctors, healthcare professionals and police), we have special offers as well. Tata Motors has virtually launched some of its BSVI models from the commercial vehicle portfolio, using digital platforms. Additionally, the sales teams are also engaging with the customers all across the country, via digital communication apps, to disseminate information about the newly-launched products and also accept bookings. To recognise the efforts of truck drivers and acknowledging their role on the frontline of the Covid-19 pandemic, Tata Motors has launched a #ThankYouIndianTruckers campaign. Through this campaign, Tata Motors aims to uplift the morale of the truck drivers. Tata Motors has also been providing various facilities across the country for the truck drivers through its dealerships, workshops and Saarthi Aaram Kendras, while also engaging with the ones that are on highways by offering free food, sanitisers and masks. On the aftersales front, we have extended our warranty and free service period for all our PV and CV owners, whose expiration date falls within the dates of the lockdown. Q) The way retail works might see a complete overhaul. People might not want to come to showrooms for a while now. How are you preparing for the future which right now looks pretty uncertain? Auto is a big spender on mediums like OOH, Print and Experiential. Since these three mediums have been really impacted, lots of brands are now shifting marketing dollars to other mediums. Are you doing this too, and will you stick to this strategy even after the lockdown? The online model will not completely replace the traditional model of purchasing. However, the digital model is aimed at minimizing the amount of physical contact that the traditional model requires. As of present day, customer interaction takes place right from the first step till the end. A customer starts searching for a product 6 months before he/she actually purchases it, thereby making the overall process last longer as compared to the previous process timeline, which was 3 weeks. Therefore, the digital sale process is more detailed and customer focused. Furthermore, digital product demos will play an important role in making product exploration more experiential for the customer. Q) A lot of the appeal for consumers when wanting to buy a car comes from the touch and feel factor. Now since that isn't really happening, how have you been innovating to reach out to consumers with the help of technology? Our PV customers can explore and discover our products with the innovative digital brochures that we have made available on our Click to Drive platform. The video brochure helps customers discover each car and its features in great detail. Furthermore, the test drive is also a touch and feel element of the car-buying process. Therefore, we will provide test drives for customers who ask for them while following social distancing and basic hygiene guidelines. Potentially, only one customer will be able to drive the test vehicle, while a dealer staff member sits in the rear seat, in order to follow the social distancing norms. We will also ensure that the test drive vehicle is sanitized along with putting protective covers on interior parts that come in contact frequently with the customer. On the CV front, Tata Motors has been using its social media channels to reach out to its customers to educate them on the profit-potential-increasing value adds and upgrades to the BSVI-compliant range of commercial vehicles. The series of videos are being released on the company’s social media platforms. The benefits – which are extremely customer centric – can be easily communicated to all the stakeholders in the commercial vehicle ecosystem through the videos, as well as other forms of content and with easy access to the internet. Q) During adverse times like these, people might not think of buying a car and might not want to see ads around that too. So when you come out with any kind of consumer facing communication, what is it that you're trying to achieve? We understand that it is important to bring the human aspect of the brand across the channels of communication. Our aim has always been to communicate that we are constantly available for our customers and are more of a permanent resource than just an automotive brand trying to sell vehicles. On the PV front, we are keeping our customers entertained with the help of online <a href="https://twitter.com/TataMotors_Cars/status/1253600686304043008?s=20">puzzles and games</a> and are ensuring that they are taken care of by providing them vehicle care taking tips during the lockdown. On the social media platforms, our <keyword id="9228552" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-mobility-business-division">Electric Mobility Business Division</keyword> changed track from being in active sales mode, treading different paths, to help keep consumers informed and engaged. Leveraged moment marketing at various appropriate occasions, with reasonable success. Also ran a series of campaign, advising our newest customers on Nexon EV Care Tips and the precautions they should take while keeping their newly acquired Nexon EVs in good condition, during the lockdown. Q) As marketers, what have your key learnings from these past few weeks been? The current pandemic has challenged individuals and businesses across the world which has led to the emergence of a ‘new normal’. It has changed the way brands look at conventional marketing techniques. Due to the near complete shutdown of print media, and the implication of social distancing norms, brands are now leveraging digital platforms for product and message positioning. Brands have had to reposition themselves digitally which has now become an indispensable aspect of marketing to their customers. Q) While it's difficult to predict at this point, do you expect things to get better for the auto industry in the second half of the year, during the festive months, by when hopefully things will be more under control? Although the situation is uncertain right now, the pandemic has brought about a significant change in the perspective regarding transportation usage in the minds of consumers. As people adapt to the norms of social distancing and move away from using public transport, the demand for personal vehicles is expected to go up, thereby driving the demand for personal mobility. However, time will tell what the exact outcome is.

ADOPTION OF MOBILE PAYMENTS SLOWS IN THE U.S., PAYPAL STILL ON TOP: Growth in mobile payments adoption is tapering after a multi-year surge, a new IDC survey finds. Thirty-seven percent of U.S. consumers reported using a mobile payment method of some kind, including both mobile commerce and consumer-side payments made in stores with mobile devices. But that represented only a "relatively modest gain" in consumer adoption over the prior year. The survey found that PayPal enjoyed the highest penetration among consumers. It was used by 58% of those who reported using mobile payment methods.
Achieving adoption beyond a core of early adopters is a challenge for any new technology. As we've written in past reports, for mobile payments to achieve higher penetration into the consumer base, services must be at least as convenient as cash and credit cards, i.e. they must reach what's known as "convenience parity," but they must also provide added services, like purchase-tracking or loyalty program integration that creates added incentives for consumers to part with old payment habits. "Providers need to offer products that add value beyond the payment," says James Wester, IDC's practice director for worldwide payment strategies. JP MORGAN CHASE WILL ENTER MOBILE WALLET MARKET: Despite signs of stalled progress in attracting consumers to mobile payments, JP Morgan Chase is forging ahead with its own mobile wallet, which is scheduled for release this year. Announced in February, the wallet will use tokenization technology - one-time codes that substitute for a user's 16-digit card number to decrease fraud risk. Speaking at a media event last week, JP Morgan Chase's Gavin Michael, head of digital for consumer and community banking, said the wallet will depend on near-field communication (NFC). An open question is how Chase's app will be received by AT&amp;T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. These three U.S. carriers jointly operate their own NFC-based mobile wallet, Isis. Currently, several Chase-issued credit cards are supported by Isis. But the three carriers have proved to be tough competitors in mobile payments, occasionally restricting customer access to competing products. CARRIERS SEEK ROLE IN LONDON'S PUBLIC TRANSIT PAYMENTS SYSTEM: Mobile carriers EE and Vodafone are holding talks with Transport for London (TFL) to discuss plans to allow Londoners to pay for public transit tickets with their mobile phones. The plan would involve mobile carrier-owned apps which could be reloaded in a "pay as you go" scheme, according to the Financial Times. TFL's terminals already accept NFC-based payments from contactless cards and could accept NFC-powered mobile phone payments after software upgrades. A deal for mobile-powered access to London's transit system is significant because in other markets such as Japan, the use of mobile payments technology in the mass transit system spurred wider consumer adoption of the technology. GOOGLE WALLET NABS DOMINO'S: Google Wallet has scored a significant retail partner. Domino's announced Monday that it would integrate Google's mobile payment wallet into its Android ordering app, offering a "Pay With Google" button at checkout. The pizza giant estimates that its global digital sales reach $3 billion annually. A STARTUP SEEKS TO REDUCE CHURN FOR STRIPE USERS. Though it has yet to launch, Churn Buster aims to help online businesses reduce churn rates caused by recurring payments systems that attempt to process payment cards with expired information. It looks like the company achieves this by both emailing and calling customers when their payments cards fail to be processed in order to get updated information. Economists at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/goldman-on-the-weathers-economic-impact-2014-2">Goldman Sachs</a>, JP Morgan, and Bank of America Merrill Lynch all published research pointing to other sources of weakness, which included <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-causing-the-economic-slowdown-2014-2">expiring emergency unemployment benefits, lapsing capital expenditure tax credits</a>, and a giveback in the economic strength from the second half of 2013 (e.g. inventory accumulation and export growth). </li>
<li>Inflation: Surprisingly <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/world-inflation-rates-2014-1">low inflation</a> has long been one of the more surprising economic stories in recent years. However, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/time-to-look-at-inflation-2014-2">incoming data</a> seems to suggest that we should get ready for this story to change. Owners' equity in real estate continues to trend higher, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/health-care-cost-inflation-accelerating-2014-2">health care costs</a> seem to be picking up, and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/long-term-unemployment-and-wage-growth-2014-2">labor market dynamics suggest wage growth</a> could heat up sooner than expected. </li>

Economic Calendar

<li>Dallas Fed Manufacturing Index (Mon): Economists estimate this regional activity index slipped to 3.0 from 3.8 a month ago.</li>
<li>S&amp;P/Case-Shiller Index (Tues): Economists estimate the home prices climbed 0.6% month-over-month in December, or 13.3% year-over-year. "In November, the S&amp;P/Case Shiller 20 City composite index reached a new cycle high at 13.75% YoY," noted Credit Suisse economists. "However, slower growth rates in November and December recorded in the Core Logic home price index suggest S&amp;P/Case Shiller prices stepped down in December. We expect a 0.8% MoM rise, which would leave the YoY rate at 13.6%."</li>
<li>Consumer Confidence Index (Tues): Economists estimate the Conference Board's measure of sentiment slipped to 80.0 from 80.7 in January. "In February, Washington should not have posed a major concern to consumer confidence," said Bank of America Merrill Lynch economists. "The US House agreed to suspend the debt ceiling, and the FOMC emphasized the pursuit of status quo policy. The consumer, however, may pick up on the trend of weak data such as vehicle sales, payrolls, initial jobless claims, retail sales, and the NAHB index."</li>
<li>Richmond Fed Manufacturing Index (Tues): Economists estimate this regional activity index fell to 3 from 12 in January.</li>
<li>New Home Sales (Wed): Economists estimate new home sales fell 3.4% to an annualized rate of 400,000 in January. "Mortgage applications for purchase have declined in four of the past five weeks and builder sentiment plunged to its lowest level since mid-2013," noted Wells Fargo's John Silvia. "Although the weakness was broad-based, current sales saw the steepest decline, plummeting 11 points to 51. Builders noted the drop was due to unusually severe weather conditions, but also cited a shortage in skilled labor and lots. Although weather conditions are expected to be a temporary drag on construction activity, rising construction costs, including a dearth of skilled workers could slow the pace of the housing market recovery."</li>
<li>Durable Goods Orders (Thurs): Economists estimate 1.5% in January. Nondefense capital goods excluding aircraft (aka core capital goods) is estimated to have slipped by 0.2%. "What matter in this report are core capital goods data, since they feed into our GDP tracking model - core capital goods are nondefense capital goods excluding aircraft and are a good proxy for capex," <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-causing-the-economic-slowdown-2014-2">said Bank of America Merrill Lynch economists</a>. "We expect core capital goods shipments to pull back 1.0% mom as freezing weather slowed down business activity over the month and core orders declined in December. Core orders were likely weak for a second consecutive month in January, down 1.5%."</li>
<li>Initial Jobless Claims (Thurs): Economists estimate initial claims slipped to 335,000 from 336,000 a week ago. "Initial jobless claims probably edged lower during the Presidents' Day holiday week," said Citi's Peter D'Antonio. "The weather was much fairer during the reference period, but holidays can result in aberrant swings in the data."</li>
<li>Kansas City Fed Manufacturing Activity (Thurs): Economists estimate this regional activity index fell to 2 in February from 5 in January.</li>
<li>Q4 GDP (Fri): Economists estimate Q4 GDP was revised down to 2.5% from 3.2%. "Substantial downward adjustments to core ex auto retail sales in November and December, which recast the holiday shopping season as slow instead of strong, pointed to a downward revision to consumption to +2.8% from +3.3%," said Morgan Stanley's Ted Wieseman. "Lower results than BEA assumed for December international trade and wholesale inventories should lower the initially estimated +1.3pp net exports and +0.4pp inventories contributions by 0.2pp each."</li>
<li>Chicago PMI (Fri): Economists estimate this regional PMI fell to 56.4 in February from 59.6 in January. "We anticipate a substantial drop-off in the Chicago business barometer in February," said Citi's D'Antonio. "The Chicago area is accustomed to nasty winter conditions, so we normally wouldn't look for weather effects in a manufacturing index from that region. However, the region's activity would be affected by a pullback in demand for its products due to weather. In this case, the relative importance of autos means that the dramatic weather-related reduction in vehicle sales in recent months (and the corresponding overstocked lots and reduced orders) could impact this measure of activity."</li>
<li>Univ. of Michigan Confidence (Fri): Economists estimate the final reading of this sentiment measure came in at 81.2. "On one hand, higher utilities bills during the winter season could cut into discretionary income and weigh on the index," said Nomura economists. "On the other hand, households have been more optimistic about the labor market and their finances."</li>
<li>Pending Home Sales (Fri): Economists estimate sales increased 1.5% in January. But some are forecasting a decline. "We look for pending home sales, which track signed contracts on single-family homes, condos, and co-ops, to fall 5% m/m in January," said Barclays economists. "One factor in our forecast is MBA applications for purchase, which rose 4.4% on the month after declining 6.1% in December. Buyer traffic in the NAHB home index, however, fell to 40 in January, perhaps driven by adverse weather, and is suggestive of less momentum."</li>

Market Commentary
Last weak, Facebook announced it would acquire text-messaging app WhatsApp for a whopping $19 billion. This was a major-headscratcher for investment analysts trying to justify the price.
Legendary <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/aswath-damodaran-paragraph-on-markets-2014-2">NYU finance professor Aswath Damodaran</a> saw the deal as an opportunity to share some wisdom on the workings of financial markets:
"My experience with markets has been that no one has a monopoly on virtue and good sense and that the hubris that leads to absolute conviction is an invitation for a market take-down. To investors [who] view deals like the WhatsApp acquisition as evidence of irrational exuberance, remember that there are traders who are laughing their way to the bank, with the profits that they have collected from their social media investments. Similarly, for traders who view fundamentals and valuation as games played by eggheads and academics, recognize that mood and momentum may be the dominant factors driving social media companies right now, but markets are fickle and fundamentals will matter (sooner or later)."
