In a bid to further boost <keyword id="13981672" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="meta-whatapp" source="Orion">Meta-WhatApp</keyword> business integration, CEO <keyword id="6354630" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mark-zuckerberg" source="Orion">Mark Zuckerberg</keyword> has announced to open the mobile messaging platform to businesses of all sizes globally with <keyword id="13979539" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="whatsapp-cloud-api" source="Orion">WhatsApp Cloud API</keyword> (application programming interface) hosted by the parent company.<br /><br />With this move, any business or developer can easily access the service, build directly on top of WhatsApp to customise their experience and speed up their response time to customers by using the secure WhatsApp Cloud API.<br /><br />The company will offer businesses on WhatsApp free, secure cloud hosting services provided by <keyword id="399907" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="meta" source="Orion">Meta</keyword>.<br /><br />"This is an important step to help more businesses connect with people and help more people message the businesses that they want to support -- big and small," <keyword id="353568" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="zuckerberg" source="Orion">Zuckerberg</keyword> said during the company's inaugural business messaging conference late on Thursday.<br /><br />"For our partners, this new service will eliminate costly server expenses and give them instant access to new features," said the Meta CEO.<br /><br />The company said that the people will be in control of the businesses they chat with and businesses cannot message people unless they have requested to be contacted.<br /><br />"We also want to support small businesses with additional tools. Instagram is working to open up messaging to third parties

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="1275203" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Telegram">Telegram</keyword> is a secure option for messaging due to several features it offers, although there are some weaker areas in its overall security when comparing it to other messaging apps.</li><li>Usage of the chat platform Telegram has skyrocketed as WhatsApp users flock to alternative platforms amid <keyword id="6355135" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Privacy">privacy</keyword> concerns.</li><li>Here's what you need to know about Telegram's level of security and how it measures against other privacy-concerned apps.</li></ul><p>Privacy concerns related to sharing data with Facebook drove a sea of users away from WhatsApp and toward other chat platforms, including Telegram, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/telegram-hits-500-million-users-after-whatsapp-backlash-2021-1">which hit 500 million active new users this month</a>. </p><p>However, that begs the question: Is Telegram secure?</p><p>Thankfully, from features like encrypted cloud storage to self-destructing messages that sound like something out of a spy movie, the answer is mostly yes.</p><p>Here's some more information about what those measures mean, how they make Telegram secure, and where it falls short compared to a few of its most prominent competitors.</p><h2>Telegram uses encryption, although not as extensively as some platforms</h2><p>Unlike its competitor Signal, Telegram doesn't by default apply end-to-end encryption to messages, which prevents any message intercepted by a third party from being interpretable. </p><p>However, you can opt to have end-to-end encryption by using Telegram's "secret chat" option.</p><p>Despite the fact that end-to-end encryption isn't standard, <a href="https://telegram.org/faq?setln=uz#q-what-is-this-39encryption-key-39-thing">Telegram says its two-chat system is the most secure solution for their widely-used app</a>. It toggles between Cloud and Secret chats to protect all kinds of users, relying on a standard encrypted cloud storage system based on server-client encryption - called MTProto encryption.</p><p>The cloud storage system does have its setbacks. All of your content on the app is stored in the cloud, making it accessible across devices, but also lessening your control over the information being shared. This potentially poses a security risk. </p><div type="image" title="Telegram in App Store" height="3712" width="5568" msid="80593454" hostid="261"></div><h2>Telegram's secret chat option has other security features for the more privacy-concerned user, including self-destructing messages</h2><p>In addition to the end-to-end encryption, secret chats also leave no trace on Telegram servers, don't allow forwarding, and can be sent as <a href="https://telegram.org/blog/now-you-see-me" target="_blank" rel="noopener">self-destructing messages</a>. </p><p>Secret chats are also separate from the Telegram cloud, and instead can only be accessed via the device of origin. They are encrypted by another layer of security, found in client-client encryption.  </p><h2>Compared to its competitors, Telegram does fall short security-wise in a few areas</h2><p>Although end-to-end encryption is an option, it's been a criticism of Telegram that that type of encryption isn't the default setting - as it is for Signal, for instance.</p><p>Telegram's secret chat option can also only be held between two people, meaning there's a lack of end-to-end encryption for group chats.</p><p>And unlike Signal, Telegram doesn't comprehensively encrypt metadata. Telegram collects your IP address, which Signal does not, and can link your phone number, contact list, and user ID back to you. </p><p>This backfired in 2016 <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-iran-cyber-telegram-exclusive-idUSKCN10D1AM">when the user information of 15 million Iranians was exposed by an Iranian group of hackers called Rocket Kitten</a>. <keyword id="6355629" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="google" source="Orion">Google</keyword> on Monday announced that it will integrate "<keyword id="11907269" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="digilocker" source="Orion">DigiLocker</keyword>", a government-issued document storage service, into the <keyword id="6448233" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="files" source="Orion">Files</keyword> app on Android so users can access government-verified documents from the app in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>.<br /><br />At the annual Google for India event, Google announced its partnership with the National eGovernance Division (NeGD), established by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), to roll out the DigiLocker integration within the Files app.<br /><br />DigiLocker is a key initiative under Digital India, which offers a secure cloud-based platform for the storage, sharing and verification of documents and certificates.<br /><br />"We expect that DigiLocker's integration and partnership on Android will drive smoother and ubiquitous access to digitised documents in a safe and secure manner for all our users," Abhishek Singh, President and CEO, NeGD and MyGov, MD and CEO, Digital India Corporation, said in a statement.<br /><br />The documents saved in Google Files will be stored in an isolated environment on the device and will be accessible only through a unique lock screen authentication.<br /><br />"As the number of digital users and businesses grow in India, so do the attacks surfaces. Analysing and improving cybersecurity across surfaces is no longer a human-scale problem, it needs to be supplemented with sophisticated technology. It still plans to launch a test network in 2019, and expects to show off the full internet computer in 2020, a spokesman told Business Insider.</p><h2>Williams believes Google's purchase of DeepMind was a mistake on the part of regulators</h2><p>Speaking to Business Insider about lawmakers' ongoing attempts to regulate tech giants such as Google and Facebook, Williams said: "Regulators are the friends of big tech, as they don't realise what they're doing.</p><p>"Google should never have been allowed to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-google-bought-waze-the-inside-story-2015-8?r=US&amp;IR=T">buy Waze</a>, or DeepMind - which it somehow managed to buy for £400 million when it is worth billions. The British tax system just lost billions and billions of dollars."</p><h2>'DeepMind could have been a British Google'</h2><p>Williams also feels that Google's purchase of DeepMind prevented it from becoming a European alternative to Google itself, thereby consolidating Google's power.</p><p>"The bigger tragedy is [that] it was able to pool this mass of powerful tech out of Europe," he said. "DeepMind could have been a British Google. And now, those guys got it for £400 million.</p><p>"So, the point is that regulators don't do their jobs. Even <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gdpr-europe-privacy-law-advantage-to-us-tech-companies-2018-2?r=US&amp;IR=T">GDPR</a> won't halt big tech. It's a bit like banking. The banks know that when regulators create more regulations, only they [the banks] have the resources to comply. It creates a defensive moat."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>DFINITY</span></p><p class="caption">Williams cites Zynga as another tech startup stymied by big tech.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>He continued: "The regulators right now are creating a defensive moat around big tech. They're not trying to. They're well-intentioned. But big tech will use them to create a defensive moat. We believe the solution, at a lower level, involves reinventing the software. The real threat to the tech giants is competition and other technology, not regulation.</p><p>"[Regulators] won't do any of the things they should do, like stop Facebook buying WhatsApp; stop Facebook buying Instagram; stop Google buying Waze; stop Google buying DeepMind. They're not going to do any of the things they should."</p><h2>'If you're competing with big tech, big tech will change the rules so you can't compete'</h2><p>Williams also cited Zynga - the firm behind social games such as FarmVille and Texas HoldEm Poker - as another example of big tech's stranglehold on successful startups. Despite <a href="https://money.cnn.com/2011/12/14/technology/zynga_ipo_price/index.htm">enjoying a highly successful IPO in 2011 which saw it valued at around $7 billion</a>, the value of Zynga's stock <a href="https://www.standard.co.uk/business/business-news/uk-jobs-at-risk-as-online-game-company-zynga-cuts-costs-8223870.html">had declined by 85% nine months later</a>.</p><p>"Even though Zynga was backed by big-name VCs and managed to IPO, Zynga had no defence when Facebook decided to change the rules and revoke its API access," he said.</p><p>Zynga enjoyed a close relationship with Facebook, but that <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-20554441">changed in 2012</a> when the social network decided to treat the studio more like other games developers.</p><p>"The internet computer provides a means for you to guarantee APIs," Williams continued. "The reason that's important is, today, it's almost impossible to create new internet services without depending upon the APIs of big tech. That's why we're seeing this increasing consolidation of big tech.</p><p>"If you're competing with big tech, big tech will change the rules so you can't compete. <ul><li>Facebook changed its APIs but some app developers continued to retain sensitive user data more than a year after Cambridge Analytica.<br /></li><li>Around 100 of Facebook’s partners still had access to details like user names and profile pictures within a Facebook group.<br /></li><li>At 11 of these partners was accessed group member information within the last 60 days.<br /></li><li>Facebook says that it has since removed access for all concerned parties.<br /></li></ul>Data from Facebook continues to leak more than year after the Cambridge Analytica scandal. The social networking giant said that some apps continued to retain access to user profile pictures and identities even after new regulations were rolled out last year.<br /><br />"We know at least 11 partners accessed group members’ information in the last 60 days," said Facebook in its <a href="https://developers.facebook.com/blog/post/2019/11/05/changes-groups-api-access/">blog post</a>, adding that there was no evidence that this information was abused.<br /><br /><strong>The question of consent<br /></strong><br />After news of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/everyone-is-talking-about-cambridge-analytica-the-trump-linked-data-firm-that-harvested-50-million-facebook-profiles-heres-whats-going-on/amp_articleshow/63369055.cms">Cambridge Analytica</a> broke, Facebook made changes to a lot of its developer APIs, including the Groups API — the interface between app developers and Facebook that can integrate with a group.<br /><br />The changes meant that app developers would only have access to the group’s name, the number of users and content of the posts. In order to attain additional details like names and profile pictures, group members would have to give their consent.<br /><br />This was in <a href="https://developers.facebook.com/blog/post/2018/04/04/facebook-api-platform-product-changes/">April 2018</a>. More than a year later, at least 100 of Facebook’s partners still had access to group member information. The company claims to have removed their access now.<br /><br />Even though Facebook did not specify which apps still had access, it did disclose that they were mostly ‘social media management and video streaming apps’.<br /><br /><strong>Fallout from Cambridge Analytica continues<br /></strong><br />In 2018, whistleblower Christopher Wylie revealed that Cambridge Analytica used data from Facebook to harvest to data of 50 million users without their consent.<br /><br />According to Wylie, the data revealed personal information about the users. This information was then used to build psychological profiles to target users with political campaigns.<br /><br />The reforms to Facebook’s data sharing practices were only made after Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO, pledged to change regulations after a public outcry.<br /><br />"We have a responsibility to protect your data, and if we can't then we don't deserve to serve you," said Zuckerberg in a statement in March 2018.<br /><br />Despite this, this is not the first time that Facebook’s been caught in a data breach after Cambridge Analytica. <br /><br /><strong>Facebook’s many data breaches<br /></strong><br />In March this year, Facebook admitted to exposing user passwords on internal data servers. This meant that employees at Facebook could look up any user’s password which is a breach of privacy. <br /><br />In April, security researchers found that more than 540 million Facebook user records were exposed on Amazon’s cloud servers. According to UpGuard, the social networking platform was hacked by Cultura Colectiva with exposed 145 GB worth of data from Facebook.<br /><br />A couple of days later, Business Insider revealed that Facebook had ‘unintentionally uploaded’ contacts of 1.5 million people without their consent.<br /><br />WhatsApp, which is owned by Facebook, was hacked in May by an Israeli security firm, the NSO Group. It allegedly infected 1,400 users with flagship spyware, Pegasus.<br /><br />Facebook seems to be caught in a never-ending PR nightmare. It has been accused of data trading, data harvesting, and leaking user information. <br /><br />Government all over the world are mulling over whether regulation is enough to keep applications like Facebook in check when misuse has gotten out of hand.<br /><br />

On top of that, Facebook is facing easier comparable sales in the first half of 2021 relative to last year given the pandemic.</p><p>But the company is also facing headwinds, Stifel notes. Apple's expected rollout of Limited Ad Tracking features in iOS 14, which prevents collection of its identifier for advertisers (IDFA), could lead to a decline in Facebook's revenue.</p><p>But with millions of small businesses becoming active advertisers on Facebook's platform during the pandemic, "we see numerous tailwinds for Facebook in FY21," Stifel said.</p><p>The firm reiterated its Buy rating on the stock, giving it a $340 price target.</p><h2>JPMorgan: 'Weak sentiment and attractive valuation'</h2><p>Facebook remains a top pick for JPMorgan, as the social media platform should accelerate its revenue growth as it begins to monetize new products including Facebook shops and Instagram Checkout and Reels, according to a Thursday note.</p><p>While earnings should be strong in the fourth quarter, with year-over-year revenue growth jumping 26% based on the bank's estimates, investor sentiment could be the spark that moves shares higher.</p><p>"We believe Facebook likely has the worst investor sentiment among FANG names," JPMorgan said.</p><p>"We attribute Facebook's fatigue to elevated regulatory concerns, controversy around the role of platforms in recent political events, and the fact that Facebook has less overall business model diversification than Google and Amazon," JPMorgan explained. </p><p>And with regards to negative impact to revenue from Apple's new IDFA policy, JPMorgan said investors expect just a low single digit percentage point decline.</p><p>"But we believe the company has other strong sources of data &amp; user recognition, including API updates ready for implementation as of mid-January 2021," which would likely mitigate the risk to Facebook, the note said.</p><p>JPMorgan reiterated its Overweight rating on Facebook, giving it a $330 price target.</p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stocks-to-buy-sports-betting-picks-growth-industry-morgan-stanley-2021-1?utm_source=markets&amp;utm_medium=ingestgest" target="_blank" rel="noopener">MORGAN STANLEY: Buy these 9 sports-betting stocks ahead of the industry's expected legalization in 12 states this year and its growth to $10 billion in 2025</a></em></p><h2>Credit Suisse: 'Raising shopping use case, going lower in marketing funnel'</h2><p>Credit Suisse, which rates Facebook at Outperform with a $325 price target, lowered its earnings estimates and price target as it anticipates a slow start to 2021 for the company, according to a Friday note.</p><p>Credit Suisse believes investor expectations are too conservative and "underestimate the long-term monetization potential of other billion-user properties like Messenger and WhatsApp, optionality for faster free-cash-flow growth on greater efficiency on content screening/security costs," the note said.</p><p>The firm reiterated JPMorgan's view that checks with advertisers point to increased spend on Facebook's advertising platform during the holiday season and November election. </p><p>Credit Suisse said the potential for better than-expected ad revenue growth on product innovation (Facebook Shops, Search in Marketplaces etc.) in the fourth quarter is likely.</p><h2>Evercore ISI: 'Accept the acceleration, ignore the IDFA noise'</h2><p>Evercore ISI is expecting a blow-out earnings result from Facebook, based on its decision to raise its fourth-quarter revenue estimates by 400 basis points to street-high revenue growth of 28%, according to a Thursday note.</p><p>The firm said Facebook's current valuation suggests there's "a myopic focus" on the first quarter impact of Apple's IDFA iOS update and the constant concern for anti-trust legislation.</p><p>But Evercore thinks the concern is IDFA is overblown, the note said, explaining that some worst-case scenarios call for Facebook's revenue to decline by 10%.</p><p>"Our view is that the IDFA potential impact is overstated by several hundred basis points in 1Q consensus, based on the normal seasonality vs what's stated in current street models," Evercore said.</p><p>Meanwhile, Facebook should benefit from the uptick in e-commerce demand, according to Evercore.</p><p>"Consumers avoiding physical retail, flush household balance sheets, and unequal impact of the pandemic on low-income households" drove a boom in holiday consumer spending that will benefit Facebook's fourth-quarter results.</p><p>Evercore reiterated its Outperform rating on Facebook, giving it a price target of $320.</p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-stock-sectors-for-2021-tech-stocks-bubble-brent-schutte-2021-1?utm_source=markets&amp;utm_medium=ingestgest" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Northwestern Mutual's chief strategist shares the key difference between 1999 and now that shows why tech stocks are not in a bubble - and says market conditions are prime for these 5 sectors to outperform in the year ahead</a></em></p>

'Holiday halo bodes well for advertising spend': Here's what 4 Wall Street analysts expect from Facebook's 4th-quarter earnings report

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>In a great recent essay, The <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/08/technology/snap-makes-a-bet-on-the-cultural-supremacy-of-the-camera.html">New York Times' Farhad Manjoo</a> made a strong case that Snap, the company behind the social phenom Snapchat, represents a big bet that the camera is the new way to communicate.<p>As of late 2016, even Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg had to concede that "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg-wants-facebook-to-own-the-camera-like-snapchat-2016-10">the camera is the composer</a>" in response to Snap's ever-rising star, even as it <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-copy-snapchat-messenger-instagram-whatsapp-chart-2017-3">builds Snapchat-like functionality into the news feed, Instagram, and its other products</a>.</p><p>I think that Manjoo is exactly right. But from where I'm standing, Snap's bet is much bigger, and could presage another way in which computing is undergoing a massive shift.</p><p>Whenever you take a Snapchat selfie with the infamous&#xa0;<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-find-snapchats-dalmatian-filter-2016-5/#for-the-uninitiated-you-can-apply-snapchat-lenses-by-tapping-and-holding-on-your-face-in-the-app-there-are-many-to-choose-from-and-snapchat-frequently-adds-new-ones-to-play-with-1">puppy</a>&#xa0;or rainbow puke filters, there's a surprising amount of math going on behind the scenes, as artificial intelligence algorithms track your face through three-dimensional space, overlaying an image that moves with you. It ain't easy, is the point.</p><p>In industry terms, the technology at work here is called either "computer vision" or "machine vision," depending on the engineers you hang out with. And while Snap was the first social startup to build its fortunes on computer vision, it's starting to catch on elsewhere.</p><p>Now, while <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-copy-snapchat-2017-3">Facebook is in a position of power as the incumbent</a>, there are larger trends at play. The longer Facebook&#xa0;continues to ape Snapchat's best product features, the less likely that it'll be able to differentiate itself if and when Snapchat has its next big breakthrough in&#xa0;how we use our cameras to communicate and interact with the world around us.</p><h2>Google, Pinterest, Salesforce, and more</h2><p>Just a few weeks ago, Pinterest announced <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/pinterest-lens-how-to-photos-2017-3">Pinterest Lens</a>, an app that can use your phone's camera to tell you where, for instance, they got those awesome sneakers, or point out similar products that match the item's overall design aesthetic. Recently, Salesforce announced "Einstein Vision," a way for businesses, to recognize when, say, a fridge needs to be restocked by "seeing" that a Coke was taken out.&#xa0;</p><p>Probably coolest of all, though, was Google's demo of its new Video Intelligence API, a new system that can "look" inside videos and search what's in them, the same way its popular Google Photos can search for specific people or events. Take a look:</p><p>What we're really seeing, looking at all these advancements at once, is the birth of the camera as a viable computer interface.&#xa0;This isn't a new idea: <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-microsoft-xbox-kinect-didnt-take-off-2015-9">Microsoft's doomed Kinect</a>, for example, was a huge step forward in interacting with technology via camera.</p><p>Now, though, a few things are happening. With smartphones and webcams, high-quality cameras have rarely been so plentiful. And thanks to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-amazon-google-artificial-intelligence-2016-12">advances in artificial intelligence</a>, and a big assist from the cloud (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/eric-schmidt-on-snapchat-and-how-google-cloud-played-a-key-role-in-its-success-2017-3">Snapchat is hosted with Google Cloud, for instance</a>), those cameras can get a lot smarter via software without needing extra hardware.</p><h2>So what does this mean for Snapchat?</h2><p>Make no mistake, Facebook is one of the companies on the very bleeding edge of artificial intelligence, which includes advances in computer vision. Honestly, it speaks very well of Facebook's AI prowess, and their <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-buys-popular-msqrd-face-swapping-app-2016-3">acquisition strategy</a>, that they were able to match Snapchat's famed filters so quickly in Messenger.</p><p>But Facebook is also hedging its bets. While Facebook builds Snapchat-like functionality into its own apps, it still has to support the traditional news feed, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp experiences. The camera is a big part of Facebook's self-given mission to connect the world, but not the only part.</p><p>Meanwhile, if the camera is indeed the new interface, Snapchat is all in. Snap describes itself as a "camera company. Make no mistake, there is no Snapchat without the camera. And the future of the camera lies in computer vision and any new techniques.&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>In a <a href="https://boards.greenhouse.io/snapchat/jobs/463882#.WMm2yjsrIkE">job posting</a> for a computer vision expert, Snap says "<span>you'll work on creating new ways to employ computer vision and graphics to give Snapchatters exciting tools that they can use to amuse and delight their friends."</span></p><p><span>This means that Snap is making a big gamble. If it can continue to stay ahead of the curve on computer vision and deliver those tools, it stands to be the pioneer and the trendsetter into the future of cameras and of computing itself.&#xa0;</span></p><p>The payoff of this focus, though, is the enhanced likelihood that Snapchat will continue to set the pace in computer vision. <p class="p1"><strong>FACEBOOK IMPROVES AD TARGETING: </strong>The world's largest social network announced a number of changes to its Ads API program, which includes all of its non-FBX ads. Among them, Facebook has improved the logic of its ad targeting method. Previously, when an advertiser selected "parents" and "photography" as parameters for targeting users, the audience contracted to those people "who are parents OR interested in photography." Now, those parameters will be defined as "parents who are interested in photography," which will provide advertisers with a more specific target audience. </p>
<p class="p1">What's more, Facebook claims it has improved demographic targeting for a user's workplace, education, job title types, and relationship status. Advertisers can also now see when a user has added a life event to their timeline, such as telling their network that they bought a house or a car. Facebook began <a href="http://allfacebook.com/add-life-events-timeline_b127567">prompting users in December</a> to add these life events to their timelines, and the motive now seems to be advertising. </p>
<p class="p1"><strong>The changes means that advertisers can now target Facebook users based on behaviors. </strong>"These categories are specific to a user's particular actions, past purchase behavior, or purchase propensity," according to the company's ad roadmap. Testing of this new targeting type will begin in February. </p>
<p class="p1"><strong>Facebook also announced that it is sunsetting sponsored stories. </strong>When the social network <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2013/06/06/facebook-simplifies-ads/">simplified its ad units last year</a>, one of the major changes was it added social context to page post and page like ads (e.g., a user sees an ad for a company because his friend liked the brand's Facebook page). Previously, advertisers had to purchase an ad such as a page post ad, in addition to a sponsored story. The sponsored story then added the social context to the ad. Now that page post and page like ads come with social context by default, Facebook will be discontinuing sponsored stories after April. <p class="p1">Between 2006 and 2008, the majority of content on Reddit was related to programming, science, and politics, which reflected the site's roots as a community for technology professionals. In 2011, photo-related content began to take over the conversation on Reddit. Fast forward to today, and photos are still a large share of content being submitted to Reddit, but the topics range from the mainstream to the obscure, representative of Reddit evolving into a mainstream web property, a place for photo-sharing and content distribution. <p class="p1"><strong>YOU'VE GOT GOOGLE+ MAIL: </strong>Google is integrating its social network <strong>Google+</strong> with its webmail product on a more intimate level. Users can now email their Google+ contact via Gmail, even if they don't have that person's direct email address. Users can opt-out of the feature by adjusting their Gmail settings under a section called "Gmail via Google+." </p>

<p class="p1"><strong>SNAPCHAT APOLOGIZES: Snapchat</strong> posted an apology yesterday, eight days after 4.6 million users had their phone numbers and usernames exposed. The company said it updated the app to allow users to disable the "Find Friends" feature, which was vulnerable enough for hackers to exploit. <p class="p1"><strong>SNAPCHAT CHOOSES GOOGLE OVER AMAZON: </strong>Amazon's collection of cloud computing services (AWS) are a favorite among top web properties, such as Netflix, Pinterest, Reddit, Airbnb, and Spotify, to name a few. Why? Because Amazon can provide its clients with a lot of computing capacity (read: fast website response times) at a low cost. However, <strong>Snapchat</strong> built its app on top of Google App Engine, which offers infrastructure services that compete with Amazon Web Services. In an interview last year, Snapchat CTO Bobby Murphy said that he believed, "Google is scaling out and willing to invest in this platform," and that "when it comes to scale, Google could offer more than AWS." </p>
<p class="p1"><strong>Amazon is obviously going to continue investing in its cloud computing services as well though</strong>, and it would be very cumbersome for a web property the size of Netflix to migrate to a different set of cloud computing services.
