According to a report by WhatsApp tracker WABetaInfo, WhatsApp Advanced Search feature is currently under development, so a release date is not available yet. In addition to this, WhatsApp is also working on another feature called Protect Backup, which will allow you to protect your chat backups with a password. WhatsApp Advanced Search feature explained At the moment, WhatsApp allows you to search for messages in chats. If you share a lot of photos, videos, links and other media with your friends, searching for them can be a nightmare. WhatsApp Advanced Search will simplify this. You will be able to search for your photos, videos and other media by typing in the search box. From there, you will be able to filter the search results by photos, videos, and other categories. You will also be able to protect your chats using a password WhatsApp is also working on another privacy-oriented feature that will allow you to protect your chat backups using a password. Disappearing messages, fake news checker also in the works As we reported earlier, WhatsApp is developing two new features – ‘Disappearing messages’ and ‘Search message on web’. Once the user turns on the feature, he will be able to choose when the messages are to be deleted from the following options – 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week, 1 month and 1 year. Individual chat lock is now available on WhatsApp: Here’s how to use it

However, now iOS 10 is required which means users will need an <keyword id="6354606" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="iPhone">iPhone</keyword> 5 or later model to use WhatsApp. The change will affect users of the iPhone 4S for the most part, but this is still only a tiny percentage of iPhone users. WhatsApp to stop working on iPhones running on iOS 9 and older versions

<ul><li><keyword id="790242" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="WhatsApp">WhatsApp</keyword> has announced that app data will no longer be backed up on the user’s device but on <keyword id="6412891" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="google-drive">Google Drive</keyword> instead.</li><li>The WhatsApp backups stored on Google Drive won’t count towards the overall storage quota. </li><li>WhatsApp will also delete any data that hasn’t been updated in over a year starting 12 November 2018.</li></ul>The spam, good morning messages and incessant event invitations that crowd your phone’s storage won’t be an issue any longer with WhatsApp <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/technology/news/whatsapp-delete-old-back-up-data-storage-no-longer-problem/story/281458.html">shifting their storage mapping</a> to the cloud, rather than on the user’s device. In an official statement, the company stated that starting 12 November any WhatsApp files backed up on Google Drive won’t eat into your original storage quota on the cloud service. But, there’s no such thing as a free dinner. While all your images, documents, songs, voice notes, and, more importantly, messages will be backed up on Google’s secure <keyword id="799677" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cloud-storage">cloud storage</keyword>, they will no longer be encrypted. Why is <keyword id="207797" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="encryption">encryption</keyword> important? You’re obviously aware of amount of personal messages and embarrassing images that are shared on WhatsApp. The app’s end-to-end encryption is what ensures that those messages stay between you and the people you share them with. Nobody can see that communication, not even WhatsApp itself according to the company. Basically, only the people involved have the key to open the secret door. While Google claims that data is encrypted as it gets transferred from the device onto Google Drive, its terms and conditions also stipulate that their automated systems do scan your content. This includes, but is not limited to, emails to provide ‘personally relevant’ product features and ‘customised’ search results. And it’s not just about Google spying on you, it’s about the level of protection as well. While WhatsApp has end-to-end protection, Google uses 256-bit SSL/TLS encryption for data on-the-move and 128-bit AES keys once the data is stored. In layman’s terms, Google Drive’s encryption, though good, isn’t as full-proof. SSL/TLS encryption is partly in Google’s control, partly in the hands of the user. All it would really take is for your own personal server to not be up-to-date with its encryption, for there to be a loophole where hackers can slip in. There’s an exploit called <a href="https://www.darkreading.com/cloud/man-in-the-cloud-owns-your-dropbox-google-drive----sans-malware-/d/d-id/1321501">man-in-the-cloud</a> that lets hackers get past Google Drive encryption without the use of malware or even having to steal passwords. The lesson at the end of the day is, never place all of your faith in just one service or backup. While cloud services are working hard to improve their <keyword id="6355300" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="security">security</keyword>, hackers are working just as hard to find ways around it. And, if you are going to be using Google Drive for your WhatsApp backups, then perhaps invest in a third party client that can add a level of encryption to take care of all the ‘what if’ scenarios.

 What’s concerning is that the new update, if unable to detect your fingerprint, will allow the device to tap into the fingerprint credentials stored on your phone — albeit after your consent. It may sound like the process is being made more ‘convenient’ but it essentially means that WhatsApp will be picking up your biometric data from your phone. While WhatsApp has a done a good job of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/what-india-needs-from-whatsapp-might-not-be-so-easily-attainable/articleshow/65497255.cms">standing up</a> to the Indian government by refusing to give out user data because of its end-to-end encryption, its parent company — Facebook — hasn’t been that lucky <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/miscellaneous/facebook-endured-a-staggering-number-of-scandals-and-controversies-in-2018-here-they-all-are/slidelist/67185624.cms">having to face</a> a US Congressional Committee. Even India is considering new regulations that will allow it to ask technology companies like WhatsApp to break end-to-end encryption in an attempt to filter out ‘unlawful content’. Even that was subtly put to rest when WhatsApp’s data backup <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/whatsapp-data-may-shift-to-the-cloud-but-may-no-longer-be-as-encrypted/articleshow/65475359.cms">shifted to cloud</a>, no longer necessitating end-to-end encryption of communication. More security or more vulnerability The fingerprint authentication feature is being presented as an extra layer of security on WhatsApp accounts. And, in its simplest definition, it is. But just like you trust a bank when you deposit your money, you have to trust WhatsApp when sharing any more information about your identity than you already do. And, at the end of day, it’s not WhatsApp that seems to be the issue but the fact that it’s owned by Facebook — a fact many forget as they claim to block Facebook on their phones and shut down their accounts. Data collection is a reality of the 21st century yet its implications have never been fully embraced. Not to mention that fingerprints have become as easy to steal as passwords. Logic states that your fingerprint is unique to you. So when you try to use them to log in anywhere, the computer knows that it’s you trying to gain access. But it’s only unique as long as nobody else manages to make a copy. In 2014, hackers working for the Chinese government and <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/24/world/asia/hackers-took-fingerprints-of-5-6-million-us-workers-government-says.html">made off</a> with the personal data of more than 22 million Americans from the Office of Personnel Management — 5.6 million of those people had their fingerprints on file. Researchers at the Michigan State University were able to <a href="https://msutoday.msu.edu/news/2018/machine-learning-masters-the-fingerprint-to-fool-biometric-systems/">print out</a> fake 3D fingerprints for less than $500. More tech-savvy researcher in Tokyo were able to <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/2017/01/12/peace-sign-selfies-could-let-hackers-copy-fingerprints/">reconstruct a fingerprint</a> based on somebody posing with the ‘peace sign’ fingers on a photo taken from a distance of nine feet. Michigan State University’s Philip Bontrager told <a href="https://msutoday.msu.edu/news/2018/machine-learning-masters-the-fingerprint-to-fool-biometric-systems/">USA Today</a>, “These experiments demonstrate the need for multi-factor authentication and should be a wake-up call for device manufacturers about the implications of artificial fingerprint attacks.” Facebook has been facing privacy issues since 2003 and is under pressure to prove its credibility as the world’s waits to see whether it upholds the standards set by Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Facebook’s trifles with privacy started out by leaking user data to online advertisers to help them understand their consumers — seemingly innocent in retrospect. India’s Supreme Court also recently clamped down in the use of private biometric Aadhaar data by private companies. “Once you share them on social media, then they’re gone,” Isao Echizen <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/446ac29a-dbc1-11e6-9d7c-be108f1c1dce">told</a> the Financial Times. The government dropped the proceedings when it found a contractor that could break into the phone, a common occurrence in FBI investigations.Two of the former FBI officials, who were not present in talks with Apple, told Reuters it appeared that the FBI's arguments that the backups provided vital evidence in thousands of cases had prevailed."It's because Apple was convinced," said one. "Outside of that public spat over San Bernardino, Apple gets along with the federal government."However, a former Apple employee said it was possible the encryption project was dropped for other reasons, such as concern that more customers would find themselves locked out of their data more often.Once the decision was made, the 10 or so experts on the Apple encryption project - variously code-named Plesio and KeyDrop - were told to stop working on the effort, three people familiar with the matter told Reuters.Sharaf Maksumov/ShutterstockApple's decision not to proceed with end-to-end encryption of iCloud backups made the FBI's job easier.The agency relies on hacking software that exploits security flaws to break into a phone. But that method requires direct access to the phone which would ordinarily tip off the user, who is often the subject of the investigation.Apple's iCloud, on the other hand, can be searched in secret. In the first half of last year, the period covered by Apple's most recent semiannual transparency report on requests for data it receives from government agencies, U.S. authorities armed with regular court papers asked for and obtained full device backups or other iCloud content in 1,568 cases, covering about 6,000 accounts.The company said it turned over at least some data for 90% of the requests it received. It turns over data more often in response to secret US intelligence court directives, topping 14,000 accounts in the second half of 2018. Because of gag orders, Apple has not given any such data for 2019.Had it proceeded with its plan, Apple would not have been able to turn over any readable data belonging to users who opted for end-to-end encryption.Instead of protecting all of iCloud with end-to-end encryption, Apple has shifted to focus on protecting some of the most sensitive user information, such as saved passwords and health data.But backed-up contact information and texts from iMessage, WhatsApp and other encrypted services remain available to Apple employees and authorities.Apple is not the only tech company to have removed its own access to customers' information.In October 2018, Google announced a similar system to Apple's dropped plan for secure backups. The maker of Android software, which runs on about three-quarters of the world's mobile devices, said users could back up their data to its own cloud without trusting the company with the key.Two people familiar with the project said Google gave no advance notice to governments, and picked a time to announce it when encryption was not in the news.The company continues to offer the service but declined to comment on how many users have taken up the option. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Hollis JohnsonThe iPhone X.</div></div></div><ul><li>I have been an Android user for 13 years.</li><li>In January I decided to switch to the iPhone X.</li><li>It was totally worth it, despite its high price tag and a few small annoyances.</li></ul> I have been in the Android camp since I bought a Motorola Razr clamshell around 2004.I stuck with Android faithfully in the 14 years that followed, shuttling through the HTC Desire, the Samsung Galaxy S3, a Moto G and, most recently, a Huawei P9.But it's over. I switched over to the iPhone X in January, because if you're going to give up a decade-long relationship you may as well do it in $1,000 (£1,000) style.Here's how I've found it so far:<h2>I bought the iPhone X through the upgrade program - which is cheaper than buying it through a carrier</h2>It is insane to me that people still sign up for two-year contracts with a carrier when they renew their phones. Sure, you get a shiny new phone, but then you are locked into an expensive contract that is bad value for you over the long term.But it's also extremely expensive paying $1,000 (£1,000) upfront for a phone.Luckily Apple offers a workaround where you can pay a monthly fee for a SIM-free iPhone X, meaning you aren't tied into a contract. Once you've paid off the $1,000 in 20 months or less, the phone is yours. And unlike with a normal mobile tariff, an operator hasn't squeezed an extra few hundred dollars out of you in the process.I <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/the-iphone-x-upgrade-programme-value-2017-12">wrote about how good of a value the upgrade program is</a> in December - and acted on my own advice a month later. There's some caveats: mainly about paying your monthly fee on time and also keeping the phone in good condition. But otherwise it feels like an affordable way to buy an amazing device.<h2>Face ID has changed the way I shop on my phone</h2>Face ID is Apple's facial recognition system which, when you pick up the phone, lets you unlock it just by using your face.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Apple/YouTubeApple's iPhone X uses its special "TrueDepth" camera system to scan a user's face and securely log them in.</div></div></div>That's extremely cool, but not the coolest or most useful aspect of Face ID.The iPhone X will approve purchases and sign you into services provided you authenticate with Face ID. This felt like an amazing innovation, and makes it much faster to download apps and sign into, for example, my banking app. The "wow" feeling hasn't worn off even after several months of using the phone.I would in no way count myself as an Apple fangirl, but I never came across anything this futuristic on Android. It feels like a genuine innovation for smartphones, which are otherwise highly commoditized. It was also extremely handy while I was skiing and couldn't fumble around in the snow trying to unlock the phone with a passcode.<h2>Force Touch and 3D Touch are a complete puzzle</h2>When you first unbox the iPhone X, the phone comes with a simple manual. So simple, that it doesn't really explain how to use the phone - I had to ask another longtime iPhone owner how to take a screenshot and search for items on a webpage, because these basic functions are quite different on Android.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Steve Kovach/Tech Insider</div></div></div>The biggest puzzle was Force Touch and 3D Touch. This means that the iPhone X screen is pressure-sensitive, and the device will do different things depending on how hard or lightly you press it. For example, pressing hard on an unread email in your inbox will show you a preview of the email. Keep pressing, and it will actually open the email.There are myriad uses for Force and 3D Touch on the iPhone X that I just can't quite be bothered to try and understand. It feels like a confusing feature that's poorly explained - and as the user, it shouldn't be on me to try and Google different uses for Force and 3D Touch. Apple's whole reputation, after all, is staked on its simplicity.<h2>Restoring WhatsApp and Google accounts were a total nightmare</h2>Whatever Apple tells you about how easy it is to switch your contacts from Android to iPhone isn't what I experienced.Like many people, I use my phone for both work and personal purposes. Business Insider runs on Google, as do I, and so I need to manage multiple Gmail and Google Drive accounts from my phone.Importantly, my work and personal contacts, and trying not to duplicate everything, was extremely difficult. In the end, I imported contacts from one Gmail address which holds both my work and personal contact details - but still lost some numbers in the process. It was annoying, but not insurmountable.The biggest outrage is trying to switch from WhatsApp on Android to WhatsApp on iOS. Basically, you can't.If you were on Android and changed up to a new Android phone, you could simply back up your old WhatsApp chats on Google Drive, then restore them to the new phone. Likewise an iPhone upgrade, if you backed up your chats on iCloud.But you can't do this if you're switching ecosystems - so an Android user cannot use Google Drive to restore WhatsApp chats to a new iPhone, as I discovered.<h2>No one turns their iPhone off and this blew my mind</h2>When I had an Android phone, my normal routine was to set my alarm on an analogue alarm clock, then set a back-up alarm on my phone, because you can't trust anything. And then I would switch my phone off before going to sleep.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Hollis Johnson</div></div></div>This is, according to a straw poll of my Business Insider colleagues, totally alien behaviour.Most of my colleagues use iPhones - and also rely on their phones as an alarm.The iPhone X alarm does not go off if you power down the phone. This completely blew my mind after years of setting alarms on my Android and then properly plugging off.Now I keep the iPhone X on overnight, but on silent. On principle, I don't like this. I think having screens on in your bedroom affects your sleep, and I don't like my tendency to pick up the phone first thing in the morning to look at Twitter. If the phone's off, I'm more likely to get on with my morning routine.<h2>All of the small annoyances are nothing compared to the huge advantage of extra security</h2>The main reason I switched to Android was paranoia. I've covered technology for a decade, and while iOS isn't totally devoid of security issues, there's an alarming trickle of stories about how poor Android's security is. Some of Google's security decisions may be justified, but the company is bad at explaining to users why, for example, <a href="https://qz.com/1131515/google-collects-android-users-locations-even-when-location-services-are-disabled/">it seems to be collecting their locations when GPS is switched off</a>.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Hollis Johnson</div></div></div>For the most part, you are pretty secure if you use two-factor authentication and use strong passwords. But Face ID means you don't have to go to the trouble of remembering passwords, and Apple's tighter security makes me feel surer that my information (and sources) are not at risk.Finally, <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/apple-iphone-x-review-2017-11">it's just a beautiful phone</a>. "What happens on your iPhone, stays on your iPhone" is both a good dig at your rivals and a clever restating of Sin City's popular catch phrase.But it's literally a lie. What's happens on customers' iPhones doesn't stay on them - and you know it.All kinds of data leaks off of iPhones, much of it with user permission to the numerous software developers who offer the apps that make your devices so useful. But plenty of it also goes to your own servers and services. That's something you both encourage and make money off of - in some cases in ways that aren't all that different from the companies your ad is implicitly deriding.Read this: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-google-ad-ces-2019-privacy-imessage-2019-1">Apple trolled Google with a massive billboard at the world's biggest tech show, which it's not even attending</a><h2>Paul Manafort knows what's on iPhones doesn't stay there</h2>To cite one prominent example of how data on iPhones doesn't actually stay on them, take the case of Paul Manafort, President Trump's former campaign manager who was recently convicted of multiple federal crimes. Part of what got him in trouble were some WhatsApp messages he sent from his iPhone.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><a href="https://www.gettyimages.com/license/925372774">Drew Angerer/Getty Images</a>Some of the evidence federal prosecutors used to convict Paul Manafort, President Trump's former campaign manager, was gleaned from an iCloud backup of his iPhone's WhatsApp app.</div></div></div>That may seem strange at first. WhatsApp is renowned for offering a secure messaging service with end-to-end encryption, which blocks anyone but the sending and receiving parties from reading messages. iPhones are also renowned for their own security - and everything stays on an iPhone, right?Wrong. Manafort backed up his WhatsApp messages to your iCloud service, a common practice. What he apparently didn't realize is <a href="https://gizmodo.com/paul-manafort-learns-that-encrypting-messages-doesnt-ma-1826561511">those backups aren't secure</a>, that you have the keys to them and can access them when federal prosecutors ask you to.Other companies do the same thing, of course. Businesses are legally obliged to hand over customer information when they receive a subpoena from law enforcement (unless they choose to legally challenge the subpoena, as Apple and others do from time to time). Manafort's case may also be the one of the more extreme, and justified, examples of how the things people do on their iPhones don't actually stay on them. But it's certainly not an isolated one.<h2>iPhones regularly leak all kinds of information</h2>Even at a very basic level, iPhones leak information. It's not a bad thing, it's just the nature of phones and networked computers. When users make a call or access the internet, they are providing information via the cell towers or wireless routers they are connecting through to carriers or website operators about where they are and, in many cases, who they are connecting with. That kind of metadata absolutely doesn't stay on users' iPhones.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image">Hollis JohnsonApple has touted the security of the Face ID facial recognition system it's built into its latest iPhones.</div></div></div>But you as a company also get all kinds of data off iPhones. Your Maps app and its real-time traffic conditions service relies on data you glean from iPhone users. Many iPhones are customized to automatically send you diagnostic and other data, so you can identify bugs in your operating system. When iPhone users asks questions of Siri, their devices submit those queries to your servers, and you use that information to get a better idea of the kind of information users are looking for.You've made a big deal about how the iPhone has built-in encryption and advanced authentication technology, such as your Face ID facial recognition system, to protect the data stored on users' devices. And for the most part, the iPhone's built in security technology is pretty robust.But as the Manafort case illustrates, the locks you've put on people's devices are irrelevant when you've left open a huge back door in the form of your iCloud service.<h2>iCloud is a big back door to users' iPhones</h2>It used to be that most customers backed up their phones to their home computers via your iTunes software, assuming they backed them up at all. Now, the default is to back up to iCloud - something you've been pushing customers to do. It's true that the iCloud backup service is a lot easier and user friendly than iTunes. But you make money off it; you charge customers who want more than the pittance of storage you offer.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">Paramount VantageMalicious actors were able to gain access to risque photos of Jennifer Lawrence and other celebrities by hacking into their iCloud accounts.</div></div></div>All that data - including sensitive things like chat and email messages - is copied to your computers through iCloud. While your policy may be to not access user data, it's factually incorrect to claim that the data "stays" on a customer's iPhone.It's a particularly dangerous illusion to perpetuate for people who may not be technically savvy enough to know any better and who are foolish enough to take you at your word. Just look at what happened to Jennifer Lawrence. Like many people, Lawrence used your iClould Photos service, which stores on your servers the pictures users take on their iPhones. The service is great; I use it to backup all my digital photos and to access them on my numerous Apple devices.The downside of iCloud Photos, though, is that photos are no longer just on users' devices, and they too can leak out. That's something that Lawrence and several other celebrities found out to their dismay several years ago when <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/4chan-nude-photo-leak-2014-8">malicious actors were able to figure out their iCloud passwords, gain access to their photo libraries, and post on the public web some of the risque pictures</a> they found there.<h2>Apple benefits from Google searches and Facebook's app</h2>In recent years, as your iPhone sales have started to stagnate and even fall, you've been touting your services business. According to analysts, one of the biggest and most profitable money makers in that business <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-services-macquarie-schachter-slowdown-google-app-store-music-2018-12">is your deal with Google</a>. That deal ensures that Google is the default search engine in the iPhone's Safari web browser, a position which ends up sending likely billions of search requests to the company every year.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image">Visual China GroupApple CEO Tim Cook has made a big point lately of touting his company's privacy bona fides.</div></div></div>That's a significant data leak in and of itself; Google uses those searches to glean lots of information about iPhone users and to precisely target them with ads. That's the core of Google's business - a business you implicitly are deriding in your ad - and you help enable it for a huge chunk of change. How exactly are you better than Google, again?Besides Google, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-ceo-tim-cook-facebook-self-regulation-has-failed-2018-6">the other big target of your pro-privacy campaign has been Facebook</a>. But users must have a device of some kind to access Facebook. Most of them these days get to the service using their phones, and in the United States and many other countries, a large portion of those mobile users are getting to Facebook via their iPhones. Another way of saying that is that what users do on Facebook on their iPhone isn't staying on their iPhones.Sure, you're not collecting the data. But you benefit from Facebook's app being available for the iPhone and, indirectly, from the data it collects. After all, Facebook's app has long been one of the most popular apps in the iPhone App Store. It's quite possible that if it weren't available for the iPhone at all or only offered a fraction of the features as the Android version - features, after all, that are often enabled or powered by the data Facebook collects - a significant portion of your user base would buy an Android phone instead.But it's not just Facebook's app that leaks data off of users' iPhones. A huge portion of apps in your store do that. And you know that, because you designed iOS, the operating system underlying the iPhone, to do just that. You built in hooks that allow developers to access and use all kinds of information off users' phones, including their location, their photos, their contacts in their address books, even their health and fitness information.Yes, there are good reasons to allow that access. And you do offer some relatively good settings in iOS to give users some measure of control over who has access to that information and how it's used. But it's absolutely false to suggest to users that such information stays on their device.<h2>iPhone apps are finely tracking users' locations</h2>What's more, even with the tools you offer, users still sometimes have little control or even knowledge of how data collected from their iPhones is being used. In a report last month, the New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/12/10/business/location-data-privacy-apps.html">found dozens of companies that collect consumers' location data</a> via their mobile phones, including iPhones. Although the data was collected anonymously, the companies' databases often contained enough information about the comings and goings of particular phones to identify individuals and their patterns of behavior.What's more, the report found that at least some affected consumers were unaware that their location information was being used for purposes other than the explicit features of the apps that gleaned it. Some were also unaware that, in many cases, their location information - such as what stores they visited - was being sold or passed along to other companies, including hedge funds.Look, Apple, I appreciate your commitment to privacy. As a consumer, one of the things I like about being a customer of yours is that your business isn't dependent on tracking my every move so that you can sell ads. I understand and appreciate that you make efforts to anonymize the data I and other users send to you. I also like the fact that in many cases you have given me choices about what data I share and with whom.But iPhones aren't closed boxes. Much that happens on them - sometimes all of it - definitely doesn't stay on them.
