Cybersecurity researchers on Monday said they have discovered a spear <keyword id="1545907" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="phishing-campaign" source="Orion">phishing campaign</keyword> targeting multiple IT firms where scammers were sending WhatsApp messages to top tier employees' personal numbers pretending to be their CEO.<br /><br />CloudSEK analysts found a spear phishing campaign targeting multiple corporations wherein a specific form of a message purportedly coming from superiors or CEOs may actually be a fraud.<br /><br />In these messages, the threat actor pretends to be the company's CEO and sends a WhatsApp message to employees (mostly top-level executives) on their personal phone numbers.<br /><br />Scammers misuse CEOs' publicly available pictures by using WhatsApp profile pictures as a social engineering tactic to convince the victim.<br /><br />"The research unveiled lead generation and business information tools being misused by these scammers to extract personal phone numbers," said a CloudSEK researcher.<br /><br />The scam begins with employees receiving an SMS-based message from an unknown number allegedly impersonating a top-ranking executive from the organisation.<br /><br />The reason for impersonating the top-ranking executive is to instill urgency and panic.<br /><br />If the receiver of the SMS acknowledges the scammer with a response, the threat actor/scammer would request to complete a quick task. Microsoft said its research studies revealed that people feel more present and engaged in meetings when everyone has their cameras on. Microsoft wants to make virtual meetings more immersive with 3D avatars and metaverses

New Delhi, June 30 (IANS) Facebook on Tuesday launched a new feature 'Avatars' in India which would allow users to create a digital persona that's uniquely representative of the user and post in comments, Messenger chats or share it on WhatsApp.<br /><br />Users will be able to make an Avatar, a cartoon-like version of themselves by choosing from a variety of faces, hairstyles and outfits that have been specially customised for India. <br /><br />The Avatar creator enables people to customise how they want to represent themselves across many dimensions such as facial features, hair, and outfits. <br /><br />"This creator can be accessed from Bookmarks in your FB app, as well as from the comment composer. It is also easy to access the avatar creator from someone else's avatar shared across Facebook," the company said in a statement.<br /><br />To create an Avatar, one need to go to the Facebook or Messenger comment composer, click on the "smiley" button, and then the sticker tab. In the late 1990s, when there were no apps or smartphones to use Shazam, people would call a number ‘2580’, put their phone up to the radio, and then receive an SMS consisting the song title and artist name.<br />Be it the song in a nightclub or on television, Shazam could identify songs by filtering out background noises and comparing the audio against its database of 1.6 million songs in less than 5 seconds.<br />Shazam was founded in 1999 by four friends, including an Indian-origin mind, Dhiraj Mukherjee, who was born in New Delhi. The first country to introduce Shazam was Britain, as it was then the third largest music market after the United States and Japan. During the early days, Shazam Entertainment's service was limited to Britain.<br />Like many startups, Shazam's founders were unsure about the business model; later, they joined hands with radio stations to advertise their service on air; they could identify the song. Dhiraj Mukherjee was not sure about this idea, but he took a chance anyway, he said in a 2016 <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/small-business-network/2016/dec/07/shazam-co-founder-we-were-growing-a-business-in-a-collapsing-market">interview</a>. Shazam then traveled from Nokia’s Symbian operating system to new age smartphones.<br />Fast forward to 2018, Apple acquired Shazam for a reported $400 million and had since music identification service into Control Center on the iPhone. Since the acquisition, Apple has improved the Shazam service by removing ads from the app, adding a concert discovery feature, and enabling Shazam support in third-party apps. Unlike some messaging apps, Viber doesn't require a username and password. The agency filed the first version of its antitrust case in 2020, which sought to unravel Facebook's acquisitions of WhatsApp and Instagram. </li><li>But last summer, the judge dismissed its first complaint, ruling there was insufficient evidence for the FTC's primary claim: that Facebook has monopoly power.
