Opposition leaders in the <keyword id="48510" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajya-Sabha">Rajya Sabha</keyword> asked the government on Thursday to restore status quo ante as on April this year on the India-China border. Cutting across party lines, members in the Upper House of Parliament expressed their solidarity and support to the armed forces, which are facing a standoff situation against the Chinese army in eastern Ladakh. Leader of Opposition <keyword id="6360065" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ghulam-nabi-azad">Ghulam Nabi Azad</keyword>, <keyword id="6409376" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="anand-sharma">Anand Sharma</keyword> and former defence minister A K Antony of the Congress asked the government to take efforts to restore the status quo ante of April and resolve the over-three-month-old border standoff. Some members such as Prasanna Acharya of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and <keyword id="6355496" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanjay-Raut">Sanjay Raut</keyword> of the Shiv Sena cautioned the government while entering into any agreement with China over the present situation. Defence minister <keyword id="6355121" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajnath-Singh">Rajnath Singh</keyword> made a statement in the Rajya Sabha after the government and opposition agreed that there will be no discussion on the sensitive issue. Chairman M <keyword id="74369" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Venkaiah-Naidu">Venkaiah Naidu</keyword>, however, allowed the members to seek a few clarifications on the statement, which was almost identical to the one Singh made in the Lok Sabha on September 15. Sharma said the country is proud of its Army and the sacrifices made by the soldiers to protect the border. "There should be no doubt on this and the entire nation would stand together," he said. Referring to the recent talks between the Indian defence minister and foreign minister with their Chinese counterparts and a statement on September 11, Sharma asked: "Do we understand that the restoration of the status quo ante will remain a non-negotiable and final objective for India?" Antony sought a clarification over Singh's statement in the Upper House. "You have to clarify that sovereignty means status quo ante as on the middle of April. That is the meaning of sovereignty," he said. Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh was never a disputed site, the former defence minister said. "Even at Galwan Valley, our soldiers are now not allowed to patrol at the point at which they used to patrol earlier. In the Pangong area, in a more than eight-kilometre area they are not allowing us to patrol, the area which we used to patrol. Previously, we used to patrol till Finger 8 and now we are not being allowed to patrol till Finger 8," he added. The Army and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) should be allowed to patrol at the point where they used to patrol earlier, the Congress leader said. Azad said he stands with the armed forces and salute their valour. Being a citizen of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, Azad said the people from there are ready to sacrifice themselves to defend the territory and integrity of the nation. "On behalf of my party, I would say at least on this China issue, we stand with the government. There should be no compromise. They should go back to the position where they were in April," the Congress leader said. RCP Singh of the Janata Dal (United) said China is an "ungrateful' country that always follows a "policy of aggression". He suggested that the government should negotiate with the neighbouring country from a position of strength. Tiruchi Siva and P Wilson of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) expressed their solidarity with the armed forces. Raut said patience and valour are the traditions of India, but not of China. The neighbouring country has a "tradition of betrayal and we should always be careful with them," the Shiv Sena leader said. BP Baishya of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) said the people of the northeast are with the armed forces and salute their sacrifice. Ravi Prakash Verma of the Samajwadi Party (SP), K Keshava Rao of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), Binoy Viswam of the Communist Party of India (CPI), Elamaram Kareem of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Sanjay Singh of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Veer Singh of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) also participated in the debate and expressed their solidarity with the armed forces. We always undervalue them because we think a woman can be paid lower. The need to bring about equal responsibilities at home The other deterrent is the lack of work-life balance. Thousands of women who are a part of the formal workforce also run a household — making it difficult for them to concentrate and excel at work. Nandini Piramal believes that there’s a need to change the expectations and share responsibilities at home. The lens of gender investing In recent years, mainstream investors have been incorporating a gender lens while making investment decisions and have started recognizing the strength of women as a market force. In India, there are some investors like <a href="https://yourstory.com/2019/01/gray-matters-capital-india-investment">Gray Matters Capital </a>and Innoven Capital hold similar strategies while investing in startups. However, Innoven Capital says the number o<a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/start-ups/why-women-entrepreneurs-are-missing-from-india-s-startup-story-11582267821850.html">f funded</a> startups with at least one female co-founder declined from 17% in 2018 to 12% in 2019. “We have to create systematic programmes. In the US, Melinda Gates has a fund for women entrepreneurs. Early indication is that it has actually been successful. We also have to work on increasing the base, which allows women to think about leadership roles,” Vani Kola, Kalaari Capital said. Kola added there’s still a lot of work to be done to ensure ground-level entrepreneurship. Moreover, there’s also a need to raise awareness about investing in women leaders. Gender lens investing — what needs to be done “I really believe if there can be a small carve-out to focus on women development and women empowerment -- I mean that in terms of financial inclusion -- a lot of miracles can happen. I think everyone needs a helping hand, not a handout. If we can create it that way a lot can happen,” Kola said. Vani Kola suggests dedicating a platform specifically for women entrepreneurs, like the one established by the Telangana government, which can help them get through the beginning stages and provide them confidence. “If we can find something to incubate and support that early start and the capacity to have confidence, we can create an effect,” she added. With steps like ensuring more leadership roles for women and investments with a gender lens focus, India can push for more women empowerment to help transform the economy, build an equal society and a better world. What is gender lens investing? Sangita Reddy, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Nandini Piramal, and Vani Kola share their thoughts

We often hear that size doesn’t matter and small things bring about the biggest changes. This is what happened when the tiny state of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Sikkim+&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Sikkim </a>emerged at the top spot with the best workplace conditions for women in India. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Delhi&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Delhi</a>, the national capital on the other hand happened to be ranked the worst for women to work in. 
 A report, jointly prepared by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (<keyword id="6701742" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="CSIS">CSIS</keyword>), a top American think-tank, and Nathan Associates, gave <keyword id="48118" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sikkim">Sikkim</keyword> the max marks that were 40 and Delhi received just 8.5 marks, reflecting what is wrong in the capital. 
 
"In something of a surprise, Delhi came last in our Index, due to its relatively low justice and workforce participation scores; its continued formal restrictions on women working at night in a wide range of sectors; and its lack of any incentives for female entrepreneurs in its industrial policies," the report said. 
 
The ranking was based on four main factors: legal restrictions on women's working hours in factories, retail, and the IT industry; the responsiveness of the state's criminal justice system to crimes affecting working women, such as sexual harassment; the number of women workers in the state as a percentage of total workers; and the number of incentives the state's startup and industrial policies offer women entrepreneurs. 
 
"But the tiny northeastern state of Sikkim is the breakthrough state for women in the workplace, thanks to its high rates of female workforce participation, lack of restrictions on women's working hours, and high conviction rates for workforce crimes against women (albeit on a small sample size)," the report said.

These restrictions were removed as a result of court order in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. 
 
Maharashtra missed the perfect score by just a point as the state doesn’t allow women to work after 10 pm in retail establishments. 
 
India has the world's lowest rate (24 per cent) of female workforce participation as many states have laws limiting women's working hours, and Indian women face harassment in the workplace and while commuting.

Sikkim topped the women workplace

Telangana has a colonial-era jail that allows tourists to get a first-hand experience of prison life, by paying a minimal fee of Rs 500 and getting a day's stay. 
 
The jail is 220-year-old, and is located in Sangareddy. Having been converted into a museum now, it offers a 24-hour confinement under an innovative initiative, which has been named "Feel the Jail". The initiative was launched by the prisons department so that people can spend time behind the bars and experience the feeling of being detained. 
 
On paying Rs 500, the inmates will be provided with a Khadi prison uniform, a steel plate and glass, a mug, washing and bathing soaps, bedding and other facilities, just what a state prison manual describes, along with a fan. 
 
The jail was built in 1796, when Salar Jung-I was the PM under the Nizam rule in Hyderabad.

The BJP had also promised to procure paddy at Rs 3,100 per quintal and an annual assistance of Rs 10,000 to land less farm labourers. Free food grain, income assistance for farmers, housing for all, 100 per cent electrification of villages, and tap water to every home, were listed by the party as some of Modi's guarantees. "All promises made to you will be fulfilled. This is my guarantee," Modi had said addressing a rally in MP last month. During several of rallies he took a dig at the Congress for its set of promises. "Those who do not have any guarantee about themselves are offering guarantees to the people," Modi had said at a rally in MP. "Modi's guarantees begin from where hope from others ends. That is why Modi's guarantees are popular," the prime minister had said on the campaign trail. In Jaipur, Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat took a jibe at Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, saying people have come out of the spell of the "magician." "The 'magic' has ended and Rajasthan has come out of the spell of the magician. People have voted for the honour of women and for the welfare of the poor," he said. Gehlot was born into a family of magicians and assisted his father during his tours. Congress had unleashed the politics of guarantee during Karnataka assembly elections in May, making five distinct promises to the electorate - monthly cash assistance to women head of families, 200 units of free electricity, unemployment allowance to youth, free food grains, and free travel for women on state transport buses. The party tried to replicate the template in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Rajasthan. Modi turned on the heat on the Congress by projecting himself as a leader who has delivered on the promises made by him to help the common man meet his aspirations. While this is generally understood as the norm, it’s something the <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> had to reiterate after the Telangana High Court excused the statutory electricity dues of a water bottling plant in the state. The Supreme Court said that <keyword id="9339053" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="purchasers-of-auctioned-property">purchasers of auctioned property</keyword> are liable to pay the statutory electricity dues — especially since the charges were specifically mentioned during the auction. Hearing a case between the auction-purchaser of a water bottling plant in Telangana and the Telangana Electricity Board, the bench — which included Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and KM Joseph — ruled that in this specific case, the buyer of the property was liable to pay to statutory electricity dues which were unpaid by the previous owner. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="74704591" title="Vodafone India’s revenues are getting stronger after tariff hikes but its fate is still linked to Supreme Court orders" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> What is the case about? The case is about the payment of statutory dues by the purchaser of an auctioned property. In this particular instance, the purchaser refused to pay statutory electricity dues which were unpaid by the previous owner. The purchaser applied for a new electricity connection, but the authorities refused to provide the connection on the grounds that there were outstanding dues to be paid. Seeking to quash these demands made by the authorities, the purchaser approached the Telangana High Court, which subsequently granted relief. What did the Supreme Court say? The case was subsequently raised by the Telangana Electricity Board in the Supreme Court, which observed that the purchaser was liable to clear the dues. In its observation, the Supreme Court <a href="https://www.barandbench.com/news/litigation/who-is-liable-to-pay-outstanding-statutory-electricity-dues-after-auction-sale-of-property-supreme-court-answers">said</a>, “Where, as in cases of the E-auction notice in question, the existence of electricity dues, whether quantified or not, has been specifically mentioned as a liability of the purchaser and the sale is on “as is where is, whatever there is and without recourse basis”, there can be no doubt that the liability to pay electricity dues exists on the respondent (purchaser).” Who does it affect? The ruling made by the Supreme Court affects anyone purchasing any property in an auction. More specifically, during the auction, the auctioneer will have to mention specifically that the property is being sold on an “as is” basis, just like in the case above. If this is explicitly mentioned, the purchaser of the property will inherit all the liabilities and assets associated with the property. The purchaser will also have no recourse in this regard. India’s Supreme Court says those who buy auctioned property will have to pay prior electricity bills

He said he was looking forward to a world where there will be rules and regulations for privacy and data safety like food safety laws and drug safety laws. "One thing I hope for is that we don't fragment, that we are able to, whether it's on privacy or data safety, bring together a set of global rules that will allow all of us to both comply and make sure that what we build is safe to use," he said in a virtual interactive session with Telangana's Information Technology and Industry Minister K. T. Rama Rao during Bio Asia 2021. Pointing out that there are regulations all over the world for privacy, he said Europe was first to come out with General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR). "It's spreading everywhere. Privacy is a human right. I think it is going to be recognised and there will be other regulations which are going to say that when you use, in healthcare for example, data, who is benefitting. Ultimately if some patient data is being used, it has to benefit the patient. I think that the value exchange around data, its privacy or if it is used who is benefiting are all things where there are going to be rules that are going to be legislated. Same thing with facial recognition and same with AI ethics." Stating that technology is becoming pervasive in people's lives, society and economy, he underlined the need for companies building tech platforms and tools to ensure privacy of the user. "We need to take responsibility to ensure we build for privacy, we build for security, we build for AI ethics and we build even for Internet safety because these four things are not things we can wait even for regulation. We have to, even from an engineering and design ethos perspective, build it into our core. We can't afford to say we will build it and we will see what breaks and then fix it, because that attitude is not tolerated in any other industry and it should not be even in the tech industry." "One of the things we are trying to ensure is how do we have that design principles and engineering processes to ensure that the products and the services are respecting privacy, security, AI ethics as well as the fundamental Internet safety but beyond that there will be regulation," he added. Replying to another question by the minister, Nadella noted that the pandemic has, across the board, accelerated digital transformation. He pointed out how the pandemic and digital response transformed outpatient visit to a hospital, brought workflow innovation around patients and their families, reducing burden on frontline workers, and giving better tools for physicians so that they can spend more time with the patients. He said the transformation also helped with clinical data for drug discovery. "I am looking forward to come out of pandemic as a society which is better at handling the next tail event, because we can't predict what the next tail event is," he added. On new way of working from home, the Microsoft CEO said it will bring more flexibility in terms of time and worksites. "I think collaboration, learning and well being are fundamentally the things that are going to transform how we think about work while giving people more flexibility," he said.
