 India saw a steep rise in the number of infected cases after 28 news cases were reported in 10 states on March 10. The total number of people infected with Coronavirus stands 184, out which 13 have recovered and 3 are dead. The course titled ‘COVID-19 Certificate on Awareness and Management’, is free of cost and open to all individuals with any academic backgrounds. As of now, 21,623 people have enrolled in the course. “If the situation gets worse, there will be a requirement for a lot of trained manpower and in the future the government can hire those who know more about it,” a FICCI official told the Print. How to use IFCN’s WhatsApp fact checker to fight Coronavirus misinformation

<ul><li><keyword id="43587" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="pandemic">Pandemic</keyword> originated from Greek word pandemos which in this case means a disease that affects ‘all people’. </li><li>Defining coronavirus as pandemic has nothing to do with how it spreads or its symptoms. </li><li>It is an indication of how quickly it is spreading across countries. </li></ul>On March 11, World Health Organisation said that the novel coronavirus has spread across more than 100 countries and called it a pandemic. As of March 12, there were currently 126,367 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus and 4,633 deaths. Out of the total confirmed cases, 80,796 are from China. India too has quarantined itself by suspending all existing visas from March 13 till April 15. Moreover, the government also imposed Epidemic Diseases Act 1897 — a British-era law used to control plague in late 1800s. Any person who denies to obey government advisory to contain the disease shall be punished. What is a pandemic? According to WHO, pandemic means the ‘worldwide spread of a new disease’. Pandemic originated from Greek word pandemos which means a disease that affects ‘all people’. In simple words, any new disease that has spread across a country, continent or around the world can be categorized as pandemic. Declaration of the novel coronavirus as pandemic has nothing to do with how it spreads or its symptoms. It is an indication of how quickly it is geographically spreading across countries. Pandemic is the highest level in global health emergencies that warns of a disease spreading at a mass level. At first, WHO has been avoiding calling it a pandemic as it might panic people across the world and classified it as a series of epidemics. Outbreak, on the other hand, means a sudden occurance of a disease in a particular time at a particular place. Diseases classified as an outbreak affects a small community. Whereas, epidemic refers to a disease that affects a local region but globally. However, once a disease is declared pandemic, it means it has spread across the world. Before eating, after using the toilet, when your hands get dirty and after handling animals or animal waste, it is essential to wash your hands thoroughly. Prevent yourself from getting sick Do not have any unprotected contact with affected people. It is risky to touch the affected people’s nose, eyes or mouth. Never touch farm animals or wild animals. Food safety measures x`For raw meat and cooked foods, use different chopping boards and knives. Between handling raw foods and cooked foods, wash your hands thoroughly. Food safety measures Never consume dead or sick animals that are suspected to have contracted the disease causing germs. If food safety practices are followed properly, meat foods can be consumed safely even in areas where the outbreak is experienced. To achieve this end, meat must be thoroughly cooked and handled properly while food is cooked. How to stay healthy while shopping in wet markets After touching animals and animal products, wash your hands thoroughly. Never touch eyes, mouth and nose. Never get in contact with spoiled meat or sick animals. Stay far from stray animals, fluids in the market and animal waste. What safety measures to practice while working in wet markets After touching animals and animal products, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. At least a few times in a day, disinfect the equipment and working area. When you handle animal products and animals, wear gloves and gowns to protect yourself. Never underestimate the importance of facial mask. Remove the protective clothing immediately after work and wash them thoroughly, it is good to leave them in the work site. Never expose the family members to soiled clothing and shoes especially those that are used in the workplace in the wet markets. Safety measures while travelling Avoid travelling while having fever and cough. If you need to travel, use a face mask and avoid contact with people on the move. What's in store for September in the race for an effective coronavirus vaccine

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/novel-coronavirus-covid-19-symptoms-day-by-day-2020-3">COVID-19</a> vaccine could be produced in record time, but that still won't be fast enough to to solve our current pandemic. </li><li>What could: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-vaccine-treatment-clinical-trials-map-taking-place-2020-4">treatments</a>. </li><li>Developers all over the world are working on repurposing old drugs and creating new ones to treat <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-cases-maps-us-world-spread-symptoms-death-rate-2020-1">COVID-19</a>, and some could be ready by April this year. </li><li>The reason treatments might be available so much sooner than a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vaccine-for-new-coronavirus-covid-19-could-be-ready-in-18-months-who-2020-2">vaccine</a> has to do with safety. </li><li>We spoke with a couple researchers - one developing a treatment and one developing a vaccine - about their timelines. </li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul>Following is a transcript for the video. Narrator: A COVID-19 vaccine will take at least a year to get approved, which may sound like a long time, but it would actually be record-breaking. New vaccines usually take between 10 and 15 years to get to market, but a year still won't be fast enough to hold off any upcoming outbreaks. What potentially will are treatments. A treatment helps people who are already sick, while a vaccine prevents a disease in healthy people. And that's the main reason a vaccine is going to take so long. As of March 26, there were over 120 different developers pursuing three different approaches to curing COVID-19: repurposed drugs, new antibody treatments, and vaccines.Maria Elena Bottazzi: Vaccines, unfortunately, since we know it's given to healthy people, you really have to be very careful what you give because, one, you want to make sure it's super safe, that you're not going to cause something bad by just giving the vaccine. More importantly is that when you then get the infection, that the vaccine is good to tackle the infection, but it's not going to make the reaction so severe.Narrator: Vaccines are designed to trigger an immune response without actually causing an infection. By taking a weakened, inactive, or partial virus and introducing it to your system, it can start producing the right antibodies to fight it. Antibodies are created naturally by your body, but it takes time - weeks, sometimes months - to produce one just the right shape to fit, and therefore fight, a virus your body hasn't seen before. For some people facing the COVID-19 pandemic, that's too long to wait. The infection can spread rapidly in the lungs, causing lasting damage or even kill a person before the body produces enough antibodies. A vaccine allows your body to go through this process without the risk and sets it up with memory cells that will recognize the pathogen if it ever comes back, getting rid of it before you even know it's there. But vaccines have extra-long clinical trial phases because it can take weeks or months for a participant to develop immunity. Researchers then have to wait several more months to see if they get sick, since it would be unethical to expose them to the virus intentionally. And because vaccines are meant to prevent, it's more difficult to get one approved for compassionate use.Bottazzi: Like when you're already so sick that you are gonna die, you'll try anything and everything, right? And so the FDA gives you permission to sometimes try nontraditional drugs because, you know, you're already pretty much, you know, almost dead, right?Narrator: Dr. Maria Elena Bottazzi leads a team at Baylor College of Medicine that's working on a COVID-19 vaccine. Two, in fact. They're using old research, a vaccine candidate from SARS-1 that they developed a decade ago. It's been frozen and constantly monitored ever since interest and funding ran out. The virus that causes SARS and the virus that causes COVID-19 share about 70% to 80% of their genetic makeup, making this vaccine a good jumping-off point. As it stands, the original vaccine could offer limited protection against COVID-19, but it could also accelerate the development of a more effective vaccine.Bottazzi: It's a rapid switch strategy, where you start doing some studies with the current SARS. You build evidence of safety by bringing that molecule to the clinic fast. You may then stop there and not pursue it, meaning not pursue it for licensure, but by then we will have the other one, and you can rapidly bridge it in and switch it in. And then you continue the studies with the other one that is more specific.Narrator: But even with this head start, their vaccine still won't be widely available for at least 12 months. After it's developed, the vaccine will move into safety and toxicity testing, followed by a clinical trial, then FDA approval. And this is the case for all 40-plus vaccines currently in development. It's unlikely any of them will be finished and approved in time to affect this pandemic, but they could stop future outbreaks. Even the leading front-runner for a vaccine, a candidate developed by Moderna that's already in human trials after unconventionally bypassing animal testing, is still looking at one year or longer for commercial release. It would be a rare example of a vaccine being approved for compassionate use, but it is worth noting that the company is looking into emergency use of the experimental vaccine, specifically for aid workers, by fall of this year. Besides taking too long, vaccines don't work as well in people who are elderly or immunocompromised, two groups that are at high risk of dying from COVID-19. Antibody treatments get around that. These treatments follow a similar path to vaccines to widespread use, but instead of setting your body up to make antibodies itself, this treatment injects premade antibodies into your system.Sarah Ives: They can be administered to people who are infected, and they'll start clearing the virus, and they'll clear the infection within a matter of hours. They will actually help people recover faster as well as reduce the mortality rate.Narrator: They can be used preventatively, but they don't last as long as vaccines do, so they're primarily used as treatments. But in this outbreak, medical professionals could benefit from a preventative antibody treatment.Ives: So, antibodies usually take a while too, but we're doing something that is extremely rapid, and that's because we've already let nature do half of the work for us.Narrator: Sarah Ives and other scientists at Distributed Bio are working on a monoclonal antibody based on one that is already able to neutralize a SARS infection.Ives: Because these people have already created these antibodies in their bodies, and we are just taking those resources, because people have already studied them, already published their sequences, and we're cutting out months to years of the drug-development process.Narrator: Once the team identifies the new antibodies that fit the COVID-19 virus the tightest, it still has to go through the same trials a vaccine does, but a shorter version. The team hopes to have a drug available for widespread use by early fall of this year. And they're just one of more than 20 developers hoping to create a successful antibody treatment. Finally, repurposed drugs could be available as early as April. Those are drugs that the FDA or another regulator has already approved to treat other diseases and that could work for COVID-19. Repurposed drugs don't need to go through as much testing as experimental ones, which makes a great case for compassionate use, and could already exist in large quantities. The World Health Organization has started global trials on the four treatments that look the most promising, three repurposed treatments alongside one experimental drug, but there's no guarantee that any will work. One of these treatments, a drug combo used to treat HIV, already failed in a small Chinese study. But the WHO believes a larger trial with potentially thousands of participants in dozens of countries is warranted. The study is unusual, forgoing the traditional double-blind method, which opens the study up to the possibility of placebo effects. But it also means they can move faster and get answers, and hopefully a cure, as soon as possible. As of March 24, the FDA had approved the use of convalescent plasma as an investigational treatment on a limited basis. It involves taking blood plasma from a person who's recovered from COVID-19, testing it for antibodies, and injecting the plasma or a derivative of it into someone who's sick. It's worked in the past, but not on every disease, so it's not certain if it will be safe or effective for COVID-19, which is why, outside of clinical trials, it's only being approved for use in patients with serious or life-threatening infections. Even if it is proven to work, convalescent plasma isn't scalable. The treatment requires large amounts of donated blood from recovered patients, and each donation can be given to only a handful of sick patients. So there's no way to manufacture or distribute it as widely as needed for a pandemic. These timelines are a best-case scenario, where nothing goes wrong. For both treatments and vaccines, there's the potential they won't be approved by the FDA for safety or efficacy reasons. And even if they do get through the approval stage, there's still the issue of making sure there's enough to go around.Bottazzi: So, there's three layers of issues, right? So, there's the money issues, that you don't have enough, and, to be quite honest, never enough. Scalability and suitability, right? You know, so, the logistical piece of not only making it, but delivering it and distributing it. And, you know, how often do you make them? Where do you store them? Who's gonna buy them?Ives: We are going to need significant financial and government support so that we can scale up these antibodies and manufacture them at a high enough capacity to be delivered to hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people.Narrator: Both treatments and vaccines are valuable and necessary for fighting COVID-19. But the bottom line is that we likely won't see any way to medically treat or prevent this disease for weeks. All of the developers are working on fairly parallel timelines, simultaneously trying to make long-term and short-term solutions available to the global public. And the rest of us can help by staying home.Ives: Social distancing and self-quarantine are the only measures that we can take right now to mitigate the spread of this virus. But when we have a medicine, it will allow people to go back to work. Narrator: What happens when you call 911 with suspicions of having the coronavirus? We spoke with a paramedic working in New York's Westchester County to find out what happens after you make that call for medical assistance.Hanan Cohen: First of all, we would get information from our 911 dispatcher.Narrator: Hanan Cohen is the director of corporate development and community paramedicine for Empress EMS, a partner of PatientCare EMS Solutions.Cohen: Quite frankly, at this point of time in our region, we suspect that everybody is either suspicious or positive, just because of the large volume of patients.Narrator: When a dispatcher receives a call that might be COVID-19, they'll ask questions, such as if the patient has a fever or shortness of breath and if they've potentially been exposed to someone known with COVID-19. Cohen: Essentially all 911 dispatch centers are screening patients to see if they have any potential of being COVID suspicious or COVID positive.Narrator: The information gathered in the call will be relayed to the responding crew, so they enter the scene with a heightened sense of awareness.Cohen: As soon as we arrive on scene, we're doing what we kind of refer to as a doorway assessment. We're staying about, keeping our six feet of space between us and the patient, as long as their condition warrants it. Certainly if they're unstable, that does not exist, and we immediately begin treating the patient. But we approach the scene wearing PPE based on our dispatch protocol. The higher level for the higher level of concern. So if this was a potential COVID patient, we'd be wearing an N95 mask, we'd be wearing eye protection.As we approached, and from six feet away, we repeat the same, similar questions that dispatch had. Along with us wearing a mask all the time while at work is, on every patient, once we do that six-foot screening, we put a surgical mask on them for everybody's protection. We'd ask them, of those top three or four symptoms, do you have fever, cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, or a loss of appetite? Have you been tested? Are you now or have you been in close contact with anybody who was suspected or confirmed?Narrator: If the patient is stable, the crew will start their history and physical-exam portion.Cohen: And that would be asking them for all of the standard symptoms again. Fever, shortness of breath, cough, have you had chills, aches or pains, any chest pain? Now we ask about pink eye. Pink eye is popping up on some radars as being a precursor to a rather, you know, nasty case of COVID-19. Loss of smell, GI symptoms. The list has been growing over the past few weeks, so we're expanding that list as we go, as it's verified by, you know, the CDC or other appropriate resources.Narrator: Simultaneously, the <keyword id="6421374" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Paramedics">paramedics</keyword> are checking the patient's overall condition, looking at their airway, breathing, and circulation.Cohen: If they're answering us in full, complete sentences without distress, we have a good idea that they're in a certain level of stability. If they're having to look for words or they're pursing their lips or if they're only able to speak in short, abbreviated words, we know that they're having a work of breathing, we know there's a level of respiratory distress we have to be concerned about and we're gonna have to address.And at the same time, we're assessing their level of consciousness, how alert they are, how cognizant they are of their surroundings. Are they oriented to the date and the time and the place? Can they answer our questions correctly? So while we're answering those first screening questions, we're assessing multiple parts of a person's neurological, respiratory, and cardiovascular status, all at the same time, without ever having touched the patient. So that's a really quick first 15 to 20 seconds.Narrator: If the responders are confident they don't have to intervene with life-support procedures, they continue with more in-depth questioning.Cohen: Whatever their symptoms are, we'll try to ascertain when it started, how long it's been going on, did anything predispose it, and does anything make those symptoms better or worse? Those are all valuable, you know, assessment tools.Narrator: On crews with more than one person, a partner will start to take the patient's vital signs, such as temperature, pulse, and respiration. And then the head-to-toe examination continues. The head, eyes, ears, nose, and mouth all get examined.Cohen: If the patient is of a certain age or is having any chest discomfort, shortness of breath, at some point in time, when appropriate, we're gonna put them on a cardiac monitor. We're gonna take a look and see their EKG. Just to have a better understanding at what level of time may we be able to intervene, or maybe we'd not have to intervene and just give the person a safe, comfortable ride to the hospital, or, under the current protocols, have them stay at home, monitor their symptoms, and reach out to their own healthcare practitioner for further advice should the symptoms be deemed mild enough.We certainly look at all of their past medical histories, their meds, their allergies, their mood, their level of anxiety, and try to address any of those that we can, so as we get to the end of the exam, we can come up with a better overall picture of the patient and their stability and their true overall needs within the healthcare system.Narrator: The responders will assess the patient's age, past medical history, and vital signs to then make the next decision. Cohen: Is it an urgent transport, is it a nonurgent transport, is it a treatment place at home, or, with some of our patients, is it the potential of a telehealth visit with a physician to see if they can do something to maintain the person in the home in a safe environment? We look to see are under 65 years of age as a starting point. We look to see if their temperature, is it greater or less than 100.4? Respirations greater or less than 22? Pulse oximeter of less than 95%. A heart rate that we'd consider fast, over 110. A blood pressure that would be considered on the low side of less than 100, and any possible neurological changes. And if any of those are triggered, then it's an automatic follow our normal protocols and transport to the hospital.Narrator: If patients are not exhibiting these symptoms or don't have obvious risk... Cohen: Then we can go and delve further into their history as far as any other chronic diseases, and if they don't have a major secondary condition other than the fact that they may have an influenza-like illness that shortens the breath, febrile illness, then they can be considered for the treat-and-remain-at-home protocol. Then we can tell the patient that New York state has an existing protocol right now where, with their current condition, their current presentation, it's our opinion that they are better maintained at the home.The hospitals are bursting at the seams, they're overwhelmed with high-priority patients, and if at this point in time you are not positive, you will be basically presented in an environment where multiple people around you may be. So it could actually be deleterious to your health as opposed to an improvement of your health. Patients have the right to say, "Absolutely not, I want to go to the hospital." Patients always have that right, and we respect that right. Under this protocol we would speak with a physician at a hospital and just let them know that we're coming, this patient is declining to stay at home. He or she may wish to speak to the patient further and try to convince them that it's the more appropriate pathway at this time, but we'll always take a person if their decision is they need to go.Narrator: If the patient chooses to stay home...Cohen: We'll give them an informational handout from the Department of Health that explains what they should do next. They should take a fever-reducing drug, they should make sure they're drinking OK, if they have any further concerns, to reach out to their own healthcare practitioner, and if at any time they feel their condition has changed or is getting worse, dial 911 immediately, and a response will be there in a matter of minutes. One additional thing we've started here, every following day, we have one or two of our community paramedics pull all the patients who were left at home under that protocol, and we call them to see how they're doing.Narrator: Oftentimes the first responders are putting themselves at risk on the job. Hanan was COVID-19 positive himself.Cohen: We've been a combination of lucky and well prepared and well trained. Of our 600, I'm one of 30 that have tested positive. Of the 30, 14 have already returned to work. Of those that are out, only one has had a brief hospitalization. The rest are going through the home quarantine, taking the medication. We check with them every day, we follow up with them, we give them support, and when they're ready to come back, you know, there's a seat, an ambulance, and a uniform waiting for them. And, quite frankly, most of them can't wait to get back.
