New Delhi, Feb 1 () RSS-affiliate Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) on Saturday opposed Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's budget announcement that the government will encourage FDI in education, saying it is a "bad idea" and will lead to "westernisation" of education.
Barring the promotion of FDI in education, SJM's co-convener Ashwani Mahajan appreciated the budget proposals.
He praised the government for reviewing free-trade agreements, saying they were not in interest of the country. He said the 16-point action plan proposed in the Budget to create income and employment in rural areas, particularly in fisheries, horticulture and other non-farm activities, is a "welcome move."
"FDI in education is wrong. It is a bad idea and we oppose this proposal," Mahajan told .
"We should not allow foreigners to enter our education sector. This will lead to westernisation of education and will not be in national interest."
Presenting the Budget, Sitharaman said the government will encourage external commercial borrowings and FDI in education to finance infrastructure and to be able to deliver high-quality education.
Mahajan said this was considered to be the "most difficult budget" of this decade but was presented in a confident manner.
A broad vision was seen in the form of provisions for corporate world, foreign investors, infrastructure, personal tax reforms etc. and also the efforts to increase the income of the common man and support the rural economy, he said. JTR JTR ABH

His self-concept was built around the 'Will' identity, and that was who he had known himself to be," Chow said.Celebrities are not the only ones who go by different names. Growing up in a middle-class Indian household and exposed to American sitcoms, one learns two things about the West: their fondness for <keyword id="52511" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="meat" source="Orion">meat</keyword> and their children's aversion to vegetables. However, experiencing and empathising are distinct, especially having been raised on a rich array of delightful Indian vegetarian fare, even while acknowledging our nation's meat <keyword id="63151" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="culinary" source="Orion">culinary</keyword> traditions. As elucidated by Zomato's CEO, India boasts the highest percentage of vegetarians globally, cementing plants as an integral aspect of our <keyword id="6358230" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="diet" source="Orion">diet</keyword>. Nevertheless, for the industrialised and supposedly "developed" West, undergoing a protracted transition towards meat-centric diets, there appears to be a new challenge in the realm of <keyword id="2049757" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gut-health" source="Orion">gut health</keyword>. Scientists have unearthed a potential repercussion of the low fibre content in Western diets, affecting the digestion of robust <keyword id="6371347" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="plant" source="Orion">plant</keyword> material. Similar to other animals, our digestive systems host diverse colonies of microbes essential for breaking down <keyword id="6181" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="food" source="Orion">food</keyword> into assimilable components. However, until a study unveiled a group of relevant bacteria in 2003, human gut microorganisms capable of digesting <keyword id="867143" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cellulose" source="Orion">cellulose</keyword> remained elusive. Using these bacteria as a genetic blueprint, researchers meticulously analysed human faecal samples to scrutinise the gut microbiome across various times and regions. From samples of farmers to hunter-gatherers and ancient humans dating back 1,000 to 2,000 years, no stool remained unexamined. The researchers discovered multiple species of cellulose-digesting microbes in all these populations, akin to those found in cud-chewing mammals and other primates. Curiously, these same species were conspicuously scarce among individuals from modern, industrialised societies. "These findings collectively suggest a decline in these species within the human gut, likely influenced by the shift towards Westernised lifestyles," explained the study’s authors. They posit that these Ruminococcus microbes may have lost access to their preferred fibre-rich diets, causing their decline among urbanites. Consequently, this may compromise humans' ability to process plant matter, exacerbating metabolic health issues. Previous studies have highlighted the insufficient fibre intake in industrialised societies, leading to adverse health consequences. Fortunately, developing "cellulose supplements" to address this issue appears feasible, with initial research yielding promising results for human gut health. However, further investigation is imperative to fully comprehend the links between cellulose microbes and human health before our guts become inhospitable to microbial adaptation. These research findings have been published in Science.

Eating primarily meat for too long could eventually rob us of our ability to digest plant matter, study finds

New Delhi, A recent AIIMS study, which analysed published reports on non-alcoholic <keyword id="519596" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fatty-liver-disease" source="Orion">fatty liver disease</keyword> in India, states that over one-third (38 per cent) of Indians have <keyword id="6691344" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fatty-liver" source="Orion">fatty liver</keyword> or non-alcoholic fatty <keyword id="6406501" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="liver-disease" source="Orion">liver disease</keyword>.The phenomenon is not restricted to adults, but affects nearly 35 per cent of the children as well, says the study published in the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hepatology in June 2022. "Non-alcoholic fatty <keyword id="6361706" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="liver" source="Orion">liver</keyword> disease (NAFLD) is often unrecognised since it does not cause symptoms in the early stage, but may progress in some patients with severe liver disease. "The cause of 'fatty liver' or 'steatohepatitis' is the recent westernisation of our diets which involves increased intake of fast food, lack of healthy fruits and vegetables on the plate, and an unhealthy and sedentary lifestyle," Dr Anoop Saraya, Head of Department of Gastroenterology, said. He said the ailment is considered the "liver counterpart" of metabolic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. Although there is currently no approved drug treatment for fatty liver, the condition is reversible, he added. "The only way to conquer this new epidemic is to adopt a healthy lifestyle and achieve weight loss in obese individuals through adequate diet, restrict junk and sugary food intake, and exercise regularly," Saraya noted. Experts say alcohol intake remains a common cause of liver disease in India. Intake of alcohol can lead to "alcoholic hepatitis" and cirrhosis, which can progress to liver cancer and death. "Alcohol accounts for most of the cases of severe liver damage which are admitted to hospitals with diagnosis such as 'acute chronic liver failure' and these have a high mortality," Dr Saraya stated. What makes the matters worse is a high recidivism rate in the few patients who survive this disease, and the non-availability of any specific drug to treat alcoholic hepatitis. The only way to avoid this deadly disease is to avoid the alcohol intake as no alcohol is safe for the liver. Use of common over-the-counter drugs, which are generally considered safe, may also lead to liver damage, according to experts. Drugs used for the treatment of tuberculosis, antibiotics, antiepileptic drugs, and chemotherapy, are also associated with liver injury, as are those taken as complementary and alternative medications (CAM). A study by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here reported 67 per cent deaths among patients with antituberculosis drug-related acute liver failure. Of all patients with antituberculosis drug-related acute liver failure, 60 per cent were started on medicines without confirmed tuberculosis. Self-medication must be avoided, Dr Saraya asserted. Another AIIMS study has shown that hepatitis A and E constitute 30 per cent of cases of acute liver failure, with high mortality of over 50 per cent. This study was conducted by the Department of Gastroenterology and HNU, AIIMS, New Delhi. "The spread of hepatitis A and E can be largely prevented by ensuring access to clean drinking water," Saraya added.

They also appear to be full of paradoxes and, hence, are also heavily misunderstood. A lot of research is going into getting a deeper understanding of these digital natives – who were born right at the turn of the 21st century. Selfies, filters &amp; a sense of ‘self’ The biggest myth that surrounds them is that they’re self-absorbed. Most youngsters are either clicking selfies or filtering to put them up on social media, and constantly worrying about themselves. This may be true, but not entirely, according to Aditya Kaul, group account director at Kantar. “They are high on individualism, low on regrets and more self-appreciating. Like other generations, they prefer to live by their own values but prefer to live in a joint family,” he added, speaking at a webinar organised by Market Research Society of India (MRSI). “They come with an easy sense of entitlement that causes discomfort to the older generations,” said Anjana Pillai, partner, Quantum Consumer Solutions. Love thy parents But that doesn’t mean they do not get along with their parents. On the contrary, they have been raised through a more friendly parenting style, and are able to close the generation gap with their parents – becoming one of the first generations to do so. GenZs have been able to have a ‘reverse influence’ on their parents. “We hear of cases where many people in their 50s say that they chase their dreams because their children encouraged them to,” said Ashwini Sirsikar, group service line leader, Ipsos UU and SIA. This was clearly evident in the many parent-child duos that appeared on the business reality show Shark Tank India i<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/an-aai-and-two-college-dropouts-home-snacks-biz-sends-shark-tank-judges-into-a-bidding-war/articleshow/96784920.cms">ncluding Patil Kaki</a>, GetAWhey, House of Chikankari —indicating that the way ahead is a combination of old and new. “Parents are an important means for them to negotiate with society, and parents are their 4 am friends,” adds Pillai. East not West Westernisation had made its way to India before the country attained freedom, but GenZs might be the first to resist that. They’re not blindly aping the West, say experts. “Being Indian and Indianness is a big deal for them – it’s stylish and sexy. But they do not have blind love or hate for their country,” said Mukul Gautam, vice president and chief of capacity building at Purple Audacity. This change could have happened on the back of many success stories of Indians – such as startup founders, athletes, global politicians and not to forget the many Indian-origin chief executive officers leading global tech majors. Open to… everything Zoomers also have something in common with the older generations – they’re just as religious as the older generations, and are also open to the idea of arranged marriages. Their acceptance of arranged marriages, however, is more a swing towards openness than towards traditionalism. GenZs are open to everything. They’re morally fluid and a lot more experimental, and open to trying new things. The constant change around them has made them open to change — from education and personal relationships to consumption and personal identity, there is a desire to keep things open. “GenZ has lived through the narratives of climate change, socio-cultural-political instability, many movements, polarisation etc., which has tempered their optimism and made them very pragmatic and opportunistic,” says Gautam. However, this doesn’t have a bad connotation since they’re constantly evolving, questioning and pursuing multiple identities. “It’s not a passive quest either. As if on dopamine, they constantly look and learn,” says Pillai. Yet, there are pitfalls to being young in times like these, as they’re experiencing youth in a way no other generation ever did. Too many choices available too early, exacting demands from self and a perpetual quest for validation, especially on social media, are some of the reasons for the growing mental health problems. The GenZ, who was born right when the internet took off, however, is better equipped to deal with social media and pitfalls. “It’s not mindless browsing. Social media is used judiciously to create a carefully curated identity and for furthering their personal career aspirations,” says Sirsikar. While millennials are toggling between online and offline identities, GenZs are doing a better job of closing the gap — better prepared for the future that is turning virtual in a much bigger way.

Trader Joe's, a US-wide grocery chain, recently launched samosas stuffed with pumpkin, which become a national obsession around this time of the year, leading up to Halloween, which is celebrated with Jack-o'-Lanterns cut out of pumpkins. Pumpkins are injected into or used in everything from coffee to ice cream to waffles, pies, and breakfast cereals. Many of these concoctions are specially launched around this time for just this season and disappear off the shelves in a few weeks. The same fate awaits Trader Joe's "Spicy Pumpkin <keyword id="83759" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="samosa" source="Orion">Samosa</keyword>". Some Indians and Indian-descent Americans, who are wary of excessive westernisation of Indian cuisine, have responded with predictable horror, "No, Trader Joe's. Just No", said one of them. Social media has been full of similar postings chiding Trader Joe's for this culinary infraction. Others were less hostile, and more welcoming. "Trader Joe's spicy pumpkin samosa is a testament that it is accepted around the world as a global dish and no longer a regional or ethnic dish", said Chintan Pandya, the chef-cofounder of Adda and Dhamaka, the buzziest New York Indian cuisine restaurants. "It's a big step forward for Samosa as a dish and will open more food gates for regional Indian dishes. Hope it works so we can have Turkey Tikka in the Trader Joe's aisle." Turkey is a staple of a typically American holiday, Thanksgiving. The traditional dish is a whole Turkey, mostly brined but not marinated, that is roasted for hours in an oven; it's then ceremonially cut up for serving at dinner with stuffing, cranberry sauce, turkey gravy, potatoes and pumpkin pie. If anyone at Trader Joe's heard Pandya, it should 'Turkey Tikka'. <keyword id="716949" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="chicken-tikka" source="Orion">Chicken Tikka</keyword>, of its British cousin <keyword id="265720" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="chicken-tikka-masala" source="Orion">Chicken Tikka Masala</keyword>, is a growing favourite in the west. Indian-descent Americans recall a time they could not find samosas anywhere in the country. Most of them learnt to make them at home, if ingredients were available, which was also rare at the time. Indian families remember driving miles to a store with Indian cuisine groceries. Ashok Bajaj, who came to the US 33 years ago and went on to establish himself as a leading restaurateur in Washington D.C., the power capital of the world, remembers there were no samosas available at the time. Now you can't have enough of samosas served at his Indian cuisine restaurants -- Bombay Club (just a block from the <keyword id="6356037" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="white-house" source="Orion">White House</keyword>), Rasika and Bindas -- and countless other Indian cuisine restaurants around the US. Samosa is now widely available, and increasingly popular with non-Indian descent consumers. Trader Joe's did not respond to a request for of its reasons for putting pumpkin stuffed samosas on its shelves, but it is no stranger to other regular Indian cuisine -- strictly Indian in form and content -- such as Lamb Vindaloo, chickpeas and rice, chicken tikka, naans and rotis. The pumpkin Samosa appears to be its first shot at Americanizing that most typical Indian snack. "As long as its quality is good, it's good," said Bajaj. Bajaj is no stranger to experimenting with Indian cuisine, his restaurants were probably the first to put guacamole into golgappas, which are now standard hors d'oeuvres at Indian-related events, as are bite-size pieces of nan that are sometimes served with drinks, mostly wine. New Delhi, Jan 31 () Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday launched the limited edition of Khadi wrist watches manufactured as part of a joint initiative by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission and Titan. 
 He said there is a difference between modernisation and westernisation and called for modernisation of processes with focus on creation of quality products. 
 "With this extraordinary initiative, Khadi will find its way on the wrists of the modern Indian. I am sure this will lead to a bright future to the artisans in our economy," Gadkari said at the launch event.
 The minister suggested that the watches be showcased with Gandhiji's photo at international airports to attract buyers. 
 Priced at Rs 5,000 apiece, the watch sports a silver dial displaying the Charkha with the hand woven signature fabric in the background and on the straps. The grey-black texture of the watch depicts the timeless significance of the watch.
 KVIC Chairman V K Saxena said 1 square meter of Khadi fabric will be used for manufacturing 10 Titan watches and 1,000 such limited edition timeless timepieces are proposed to be sold for now. RSN MR

Most investors are looking at opportunities in airlines/hotels rather than airports.(2) The new energy vehicle (NEV) chain. The battery/battery materials (lithium)/ electrical system in NEVs has been chased by local investors as they believe demand for these will continue to grow. However, they do not like auto makers because they believe such companies rely on subsidiaries, and there is lack of competition with global peers.(3) OLED and VR. New products have resulted in investors re-evaluating the prospects for these two industries.Disneyland Shanghai is foremost in investors minds. When it opens, it will be the first Disneyland on mainland China, and will have cost around $5.5 billion (£3.8 billion) to build. Investors are largely excited by the opening of the new theme park as it is expected to give a huge boost to tourism in Shanghai, China's financial centre, and the country's most westernised city.The park will open on June 16, and demand is expected to be huge. Ticket touts are already selling tickets for the park at well above their face value, and there is evidence that airfares to Shanghai are being driven up by the park's opening.Earlier in May,<a href="http://www.straitstimes.com/asia/east-asia/disneyland-opening-pushes-up-airfares-to-shanghai"> China Daily reported that the day after the park opens, prices for a flight from Beijing to Shanghai will increase from around 490 yuan (£51, $74) to 620 yuan (£64, $94)</a>. As Credit Suisse notes, investors are particularly looking to put money into airlines and hotels to cash in on the boom in tourists from the park.Investors are also sold on the idea of putting money into the technologies behind so-called "new energy vehicles" - essentially hybrids and electric cars. China is already the second biggest market for NEVs in the world after the USA, with 300,000 registered in the five years since 2011. Instead of directly putting money into the automobile manufacturers, investors are making investments in batteries and other component parts. As CS notes, this strategy is because automakers "rely on subsidiaries, and there is lack of competition with global peers."Finally, with virtual reality increasingly coming into mainstream availability thanks to headsets like the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive, investors in China are looking to get involved in the technology. VR has received a serious endorsement from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) which earlier this year published a white paper which predicts that the VR consumer market will triple this year to £597 million ($873 million) from £162 million ($237 million) last year, <a href="http://www.apoip.org/2016/04/24/china-vr-companies-scores-millions-funding/">according to tech site AP-OIP.</a>While these three areas are booming, investors are moving away from traditional inflation based investments like commodity stocks and agricultural goods, thanks largely to an impending Fed rate hike, and worries about market liquidity, Credit Suisse says:Stocks related to 'inflation' (e.g. commodity and agriculture goods) have not followed the path of 'inflation'. Further, most investors do not believe in 'supply side reform' as there are many factors that could hinder such reform.
