In a bid to attract the middle class Indian who thinks twice before splurging on a costly meal, quick service restaurants had introduced entry-level prices and value meals for less than Rs 50. However, it didn’t get them much crowd, as a result of which, they are now going premium, so that they can bring in elite food lovers. <br />

McDonald's India, for example, has pitched itself as a mass-priced brand for over two decades now, but it has now launched its most expensive burger yet, the Maharaja Mac at Rs 145. Similarly, Dunkin' Donuts would soon be launching specialised coffees. Domino's Pizza tied up with celebrity chef Vikas Khanna last year in a bid to introduce European-styled pizzas and snacks which were priced upwards of Rs 250. Starting next month, the US burger chain Wendy's would be adding beer, wine and premium coffee to its Indian menu.<br />

"QSR was all about operations. Now, it is going back to being restaurants that offer customised and premium products," Jasper Reid, a director of the holding companies of Wendy's and Jamie's Italian in India, told ET.<br />

As per an internal study which was conducted by McDonald's last year, consumers now prefer products that are 'premium and satiating,’ which is why the world's largest restaurant chain saw a 10% jump from 2012 to 2015 in the premium offerings that it offered to young consumers in India. <br />

Quick service restaurants go premium in India, launch costlier products for better sales

They're likely to have a college degree and make more than $80,000 a year.</p><p>The average Chipotle customer is slightly more likely to be white at 51%, but the fast-casual chain's customers are more likely to be people of color than customers at other quick service chains. They average around nine Chipotle trips per year, less than one a month, for total yearly spending of $147.26. About 15.4% of all their quick-service restaurant spending goes to Chipotle in a year. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/typical-chick-fil-a-customer-demographic-white-gen-x-suburbs-high-income-2021-8">Like the average Chick-fil-A customer</a>, this Chipotle customer also spends more at McDonald's annually. </p><p>The average Chipotle customer is into shopping more broadly, not stopping at fast-food chains. They make 200 trips per year to retailers than the average US consumer, spending more than average too. They spent $33.87 on average per trip across all retailers, with just 1.1% of that spending at Chipotle.</p><p>The Chipotle buyer takes the largest share of their average <keyword id="11893588" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="retail" source="Orion">retail</keyword> spending to Walmart, where they spend about 8% of the total. Their top fast-food brands are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/typical-chick-fil-a-customer-demographic-white-gen-x-suburbs-high-income-2021-8">Chick-fil-A</a>, Taco Bell, Wendy's, Subway, and Burger King. At these chains, Chipotle customers are most likely to buy coffee, breakfast sandwiches, chicken sandwiches and wraps, sodas, or another chicken entree. </p><p>Though more Chipotle customers are millennials, Gen Z is overrepresented among its customer base. This popularity among Gen Z shows up in the customer data - Chipotle shoppers' top shopping categories are wine, body skincare, face care, toothbrushes, and sports and energy drinks. <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/beauty/generation-z-spends-most-on-skincare-study-tiktok">Gen Z spends more than any other generation on skincare.</a></p><p>Gen Z is also highly active on social media, where Chipotle is successfully reaching customers. Chipotle has one of the most popular brand pages on TikTok and has even started accepting<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chipotle-launches-resume-service-on-tiktok-amid-labor-shortage-2021-7"> resumes through the video app</a> to reach Gen Z more directly.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chipotle-restaurant-operating-margins-rose-in-second-quarter-after-raising-wages-prices-2021-7">Chipotle just posted a successful quarter</a>, with its most profitable period for its stores since 2015 after raising wages for workers. Moehringer dined at a steakhouse in downtown Kansas City. On an episode of "New Heights," their dad, Ed, insisted that the brothers ate "meat, protein with every meal."</p><p>Their mom, Donna, told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.foodandwine.com/donna-kelce-travis-kelce-jason-kelce-football-food-8386645">Food and Wine</a> that she fed her sons "a lot of chicken, meat, pasta, a lot of carbs" that they washed down with gallons of milk. Sometimes, he even opts to "ask a food truck to stop by," he told the outlet.</p><p>Kelce isn't above eating fast food from time to time, either. Since then, I've lived in places like Wales, the Czech Republic, Spain, Italy, and Greece. </p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/things-do-differently-next-trip-to-italy-2023-10">Traveling</a> was daunting at first, especially coming from a country with a population of less than 200,000. But I loved immersing myself in new cultures, forming close friendships, and discovering new delicacies in every possible city.   </p><p>I felt knowledgeable about my destinations from my education, books, and television, but you never truly know a country until you've <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/las-vegas-things-to-never-do-from-local-2023-10">lived like a local</a>.</p><p>Here are 11 things that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/paris-surprising-things-about-living-in-france-from-american">surprised me during my travels</a>.</p><h2>Living in Spain can require a lot of paperwork </h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Inside a hall at the University of Barcelona" height="3648" width="4864" msid="108019389" hostid="261" sizebytes="979082"></div><p>There's always a lot of paperwork involved in traveling, but <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/things-to-do-in-spain-2019-3">Spain</a> is a different level of bureaucracy if you plan on living there for more than six months.</p><p>First, you must secure the Empadronamiento or "padrón," which is a document necessary to register with the town hall in the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-foods-spain-2019-3">region of Spain</a> you live in. This document adds your name and address to your city's census and is also necessary for administrative tasks like applying for a social security number, residency, public healthcare, opening a bank account, and getting married.</p><p>The process needs to be repeated if you move to another city and your residency must be canceled before leaving the country. Though the process seems simple, spots are often unavailable so booking an appointment to do so can be very difficult.</p><h2><strong>The food scene is vast and varied in Prague</strong></h2><p>As a tourist in the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-things-to-do-in-prague-czech-republic">Czech Republic</a>, there are certain meals that you must try: beef steak tartare, Kulajda, Svíčková, and kolache.</p><p>Prague's international food scene is impressive, with restaurants representative of multiple cultures and palates. I was even able to find the ingredients to cook a local St. Lucian meal that included chicken backs and ripe plantains.</p><p>If you're not sure where to start or want to sample a variety, <a href="https://www.manifestomarket.com/">Manifesto</a><a href="https://www.manifestomarket.com/"> Market</a> features an eclectic mix of cuisines including authentic Hawaiian poké, rump steak tartare with shiitake mushrooms, traditional Mexican tacos, and Mediterranean dishes.</p><p>The bars are also stocked with Italian prosecco and a selection of craft beers. </p><h2><strong>Italian food is actually as good as advertised</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="The writer holds a cup of gelato" height="747" width="996" msid="108019392" hostid="261" sizebytes="40644"></div><p>I had often been told that you haven't had <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/italian-versus-american-italian-cuisine-2014-5">real pizza or pasta</a> until you go to Italy, and I can confirm that this is true. </p><p>The best pizza I had was at a small, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-restaurants-in-rome-2018-9">family-run joint</a> in Crocetta del Montello, a tiny commune about an hour outside of Venice. It was simple, with some well-seasoned sauce and cheese on a crispy crust, but tasted amazing.</p><p>The same can be said for the gelato, which is velvety with intense fruit flavor.</p><p>I have also always loved spaghetti Bolognese, but enjoying the savory sauce in its native Bologna was unmatched. </p><h2>Some states participate in Dry Sundays</h2><div type="image" title="The writer drinks a cup of beer" height="1152" width="1536" msid="108019394" hostid="261" sizebytes="222456"></div><p>During the two years that I lived in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-best-food-in-houston-texas-locals-guide-2019-10">Texas</a>, I discovered Dry Sundays, during which liquor sales are prohibited on Sundays, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.</p><p>If Christmas or New Year's Day falls on a Sunday, the liquor store is closed the following Monday.</p><p>The law itself can be a bit complex, as beer sales on Sundays are permitted from 10 a.m. to midnight and wine sales are regulated within special hours.</p><p>There are also different stipulations in place if you're attending a fair, festival, concert, or sporting event.</p><p>Other states like Kansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee participate in some variation of Dry Sunday as well.</p><h2><strong>Showering can be an extreme sport in some places</strong></h2><p>Showers in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/affordable-european-cities-2018-7">Europe</a> can be small, making it difficult to move around. The half-door, which doesn't extend all the way across the tub, can also result in a very wet and messy floor.</p><p>The shower nozzle can be handheld, and once you figure it out, showering will be a breeze. However, washing your hair can be difficult, so be prepared to lay some towels out on the floor. </p><h2><strong>Greece has a Caribbean vibe</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Skafidia Beach in Greece" height="747" width="996" msid="108019397" hostid="261" sizebytes="249992"></div><p>As a native of one of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jade-mountain-st-lucia-trip-review-travel-photos-2020-2">premier vacation and honeymoon spots</a> in the world, if the water is cold or there are rocks in lieu of sand on the beach, I am not interested.</p><p>But as I drove along the coastline to Olympia, the blue sea and sunny sky were reminiscent of St. Lucia. Skafidia Beach made me feel at home and showed me that Greece is a fantastic option if you can't make it to the Caribbean. </p><h2>Some parts of Spain take siestas very seriously</h2><p>In Prague, my Valencian roommate retreated to her bedroom every day around two o'clock for siesta, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/things-to-do-in-spain-2019-3">Spanish tradition</a> of taking a nap shortly after lunch. Our professors at a Barcelona university also scheduled classes during the morning to observe the ritual.</p><p>In my L'Hospitalet de Llobregat neighborhood, well outside of Barcelona's city center, the practice was going strong. Stores closed every day from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and I even witnessed a shop owner ask a woman to leave so that he could close at two.</p><h2>KFC and many other fast-food chains don't have the same menu around the world</h2><div type="image" title="KFC fried chicken and french fries" height="747" width="996" msid="108019399" hostid="261" sizebytes="79396"></div><p>Kentucky Fried Chicken struck gold when it opened in the Caribbean Islands, becoming the most popular fast-food restaurant across the region, beloved even by Barbados native <a href="https://www.whudat.com/newsblurbs/more/rihanna_and_chris_brown_offered_a_free_chicken_dinner_at_kfc_1680516081">Rihanna</a>.</p><p>Besides the fried chicken, one of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/all-of-the-kfc-sides-reviewed-photos">most popular sides</a> is the golden buttermilk biscuit. Or at least that's what I thought until I wandered into a KFC in Wales only to discover that they didn't have it. After some confusion from workers that I was trying to order a cookie, they offered me rice, which I never knew was an option.</p><p>Major food chains like McDonald's, Wendy's, and KFC offer location-specific menus to appeal to target audiences worldwide. This can range from a Samurai Burger in Asia to a Chee-Zee Marmite Stuffed Pizza Crust in New Zealand. </p><h2><strong>People are friendlier than you</strong> might expect across the globe</h2><div type="image" title="The writer in front of a cathedral in the Czech Republic" height="747" width="996" msid="108019401" hostid="261" sizebytes="126218"></div><p>Friendly faces are always a welcome sight and in Spain, Greece, and Italy, I found the locals to be patient and helpful even if I wasn't fluent in the language.</p><p>In the US, I met some of the warmest people when I lived in Detroit, Louisiana, and Texas.</p><p>In the UK, I initially thought people were a bit more reserved. However, when I had a problem with my visa, an amazing family in Wales helped me through it.</p><p>Though I thought Czechs, had a tough exterior, they also have a wonderful, dry sense of humor.</p><p>I learned to travel with an open mind and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mistakes-european-tourists-make-2018-4">ignore the stereotypes</a> — otherwise, you might miss out on connecting with some incredible people. </p><h2><strong>Prague was the most difficult place to adjust to</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="A frozen lake in Prague" height="1155" width="1536" msid="108019404" hostid="261" sizebytes="206612"></div><p>With its Romanesque architecture, steep hills, and small rivers, Prague is one of the most gorgeous cities in Central Europe.</p><p>However, Prague is also a cold city, so I bundled up in layers — coming from the tropical Caribbean, this was a tough adjustment.</p><p>The Czech language was also <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apps-for-traveling-dont-speak-the-language-2018-7">difficult to learn</a> and unlike in Spain, where English was very prevalent in the city center, Czech was spoken virtually everywhere. 4 tips for avoiding a hangover when you're day drinking

<ul class="summary-list"><li>After living in seven different countries, I've learned a few things that surprised me. </li><li>Prague was the hardest place to adjust to because of its cold temperatures and language.</li></ul><p>Moving abroad can be exhausting, but I've done it multiple times, leaving my native island of St. Lucia for college in the US almost 15 years ago. Since then, I've lived in places like Wales, the <keyword id="12554670" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="czech-republic" source="Orion">Czech Republic</keyword>, Spain, <keyword id="11905554" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="italy" source="Orion">Italy</keyword>, and <keyword id="6357856" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="greece" source="Orion">Greece</keyword>. </p><p>Traveling was daunting at first, especially coming from a country with a population of less than 200,000. But I loved immersing myself in new cultures, forming close friendships, and discovering new delicacies in every possible city.   </p><p>I felt knowledgeable about my destinations from my education, books, and television, but you never truly know a country until you've lived like a local.</p><p>Here are 11 things that surprised me during my travels:</p><h2>Living in Spain can require a lot of paperwork </h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Inside a hall at the University of Barcelona" height="3648" width="4864" msid="89282406" hostid="261"></div><p>There's always a lot of paperwork involved in traveling, but <a href="https://www.insider.com/things-to-do-in-spain-2019-3">Spain</a> is a different level of bureaucracy if you plan on living there for more than six months.</p><p>First, you must secure the Empadronamiento or "padrón," which is a document necessary to register with the town hall in the <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-foods-spain-2019-3">region of Spain</a> you live in. This document adds your name and address to your city's census and is also necessary for administrative tasks like applying for a social security number, residency, public healthcare, opening a bank account, and getting married.</p><p>The process needs to be repeated if you move to another city and your residency must be canceled before leaving the country. Though the process seems simple, spots are often unavailable so booking an appointment to do so can be very difficult.</p><h2><strong>The food scene is vast and varied in Prague</strong></h2><p>As a tourist in the <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-things-to-do-in-prague-czech-republic">Czech Republic</a>, there are certain meals that you must try: beef steak tartare, Kulajda, Svíčková, and kolache.</p><p>Prague's international food scene is impressive, with restaurants representative of multiple cultures and palates. I was even able to find the ingredients to cook a local St. Lucian meal that included chicken backs and ripe plantains.</p><p>If you're not sure where to start or want to sample a variety, <a href="https://www.manifestomarket.com/">Manifesto</a><a href="https://www.manifestomarket.com/"> Market</a> features an eclectic mix of cuisines including authentic Hawaiian poké, rump steak tartare with shiitake mushrooms, traditional Mexican tacos, and Mediterranean dishes.</p><p>The bars are also stocked with Italian prosecco and a selection of craft beers. </p><h2><strong>Italian food is actually as good as advertised</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="The writer holds a cup of gelato" height="747" width="996" msid="89282408" hostid="261"></div><p>I had often been told that you haven't had <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/italian-versus-american-italian-cuisine-2014-5">real pizza or pasta</a> until you go to Italy, and I can confirm that this is true. </p><p>The best pizza I had was at a small, <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-restaurants-in-rome-2018-9">family-run joint</a> in Crocetta del Montello, a tiny commune about an hour outside of Venice. It was simple, with some well-seasoned sauce and cheese on a crispy crust, but tasted amazing.</p><p>The same can be said for the gelato, which is velvety with intense fruit flavor.</p><p>I have also always loved spaghetti Bolognese, but enjoying the savory sauce in its native Bologna was unmatched. </p><h2>Some states participate in Dry Sundays</h2><div type="image" title="The writer drinks a cup of beer" height="1152" width="1536" msid="89282411" hostid="261"></div><p>During the two years that I lived in <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-best-food-in-houston-texas-locals-guide-2019-10">Texas</a>, I discovered Dry Sundays, during which liquor sales are prohibited on Sundays, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.</p><p>If Christmas or New Year's Day falls on a Sunday, the liquor store is closed the following Monday.</p><p>The law itself can be a bit complex, as beer sales on Sundays are permitted from 10 a.m. to midnight and wine sales are regulated within special hours.</p><p>There are also different stipulations in place if you're attending a fair, festival, concert, or sporting event.</p><p>Other states like Kansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee participate in some variation of Dry Sunday as well.</p><h2><strong>Showering can be an extreme sport in some places</strong></h2><p>Showers in <a href="https://www.insider.com/affordable-european-cities-2018-7">Europe</a> can be small, making it difficult to move around. The half-door, which doesn't extend all the way across the tub, can also result in a very wet and messy floor.</p><p>The shower nozzle can be handheld, and once you figure it out, showering will be a breeze. However, washing your hair can be difficult, so be prepared to lay some towels out on the floor. </p><h2><strong>Greece has a Caribbean vibe</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Skafidia Beach in Greece" height="747" width="996" msid="89282413" hostid="261"></div><p>As a native of one of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jade-mountain-st-lucia-trip-review-travel-photos-2020-2">premier vacation and honeymoon spots</a> in the world, if the water is cold or there are rocks in lieu of sand on the beach, I am not interested.</p><p>But as I drove along the coastline to Olympia, the blue sea and sunny sky were reminiscent of St. Lucia. Skafidia Beach made me feel at home and showed me that Greece is a fantastic option if you can't make it to the Caribbean. </p><h2>Some parts of Spain take siestas very seriously</h2><p>In Prague, my Valencian roommate retreated to her bedroom every day around two o'clock for siesta, the <a href="https://www.insider.com/things-to-do-in-spain-2019-3">Spanish tradition</a> of taking a nap shortly after lunch. Our professors at a Barcelona university also scheduled classes during the morning to observe the ritual.</p><p>In my L'Hospitalet de Llobregat neighborhood, well outside of Barcelona's city center, the practice was going strong. Stores closed every day from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and I even witnessed a shop owner ask a woman to leave so that he could close at two.</p><h2>KFC and many other fast-food chains don't have the same menu around the world</h2><div type="image" title="KFC fried chicken and french fries" height="747" width="996" msid="89282415" hostid="261"></div><p>Kentucky Fried Chicken struck gold when it opened in the Caribbean Islands, becoming the most popular fast-food restaurant across the region, beloved even by Barbados native <a href="https://www.whudat.com/newsblurbs/more/rihanna_and_chris_brown_offered_a_free_chicken_dinner_at_kfc_1680516081">Rihanna</a>.</p><p>Besides the fried chicken, one of the <a href="https://www.insider.com/all-of-the-kfc-sides-reviewed-photos">most popular sides</a> is the golden buttermilk biscuit. Or at least that's what I thought until I wandered into a KFC in Wales only to discover that they didn't have it. After some confusion from workers that I was trying to order a cookie, they offered me rice, which I never knew was an option.</p><p>Major food chains like McDonald's, Wendy's, and KFC offer location-specific menus to appeal to target audiences worldwide. This can range from a Samurai Burger in Asia to a Chee-Zee Marmite Stuffed Pizza Crust in New Zealand. </p><h2><strong>People are friendlier than you</strong> might expect across the globe</h2><div type="image" title="The writer in front of a cathedral in the Czech Republic" height="747" width="996" msid="89282418" hostid="261"></div><p>Friendly faces are always a welcome sight and in Spain, Greece, and Italy, I found the locals to be patient and helpful even if I wasn't fluent in the language.</p><p>In the US, I met some of the warmest people when I lived in Detroit, Louisiana, and Texas.</p><p>In the UK, I initially thought people were a bit more reserved. However, when I had a problem with my visa, an amazing family in Wales helped me through it.</p><p>Though I thought Czechs, had a tough exterior, they also have a wonderful, dry sense of humor.</p><p>I learned to <keyword id="11896628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="travel" source="Orion">travel</keyword> with an open mind and <a href="https://www.insider.com/mistakes-european-tourists-make-2018-4">ignore the stereotypes</a> — otherwise, you might miss out on connecting with some incredible people. </p><h2><strong>Prague was the most difficult place to adjust to</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="A frozen lake in Prague" height="1155" width="1536" msid="89282420" hostid="261"></div><p>With its Romanesque architecture, steep hills, and small rivers, Prague is one of the most gorgeous cities in Central Europe.</p><p>However, Prague is also a cold city, so I bundled up in layers — coming from the tropical Caribbean, this was a tough adjustment.</p><p>The Czech language was also <a href="https://www.insider.com/apps-for-traveling-dont-speak-the-language-2018-7">difficult to learn</a> and unlike in Spain, where English was very prevalent in the city center, Czech was spoken virtually everywhere. Trump criticizes Bush and Obama administrations for building 'not a good-looking wall'

There's a term for the actions triggered by daily, repetitive situational cues: habits. The more practice you have doing something, the less effort it takes. That's how our actions become more efficient and require less mental energy, enabling us to avoid reasoning through every moment and action of the day. </p><p>Habits change how our brain works, shifting activity from areas of the brain connected to decision-making and memory like the prefrontal cortex, to unconscious patterns of cue and response that operate <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=How+do+people+adhere+to+goals+when+willpower+is+low%3F+The+profits+%28and+pitfalls%29+of+strong+habits">out of our awareness</a>. </p><p>Yale psychologist John Bargh told Business Insider that about 15 years ago, he got tired of one of his own habitual behaviors: having an end-of-day drink. </p><p>"I was a functional drinker" Bargh said, "but I wanted to change." </p><p>The tipping point, as he writes in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-very-best-science-books-of-2017-12/#a-social-psychologist-explains-how-to-turn-conservatives-into-liberals-and-why-were-friendlier-when-holding-a-hot-cup-of-coffee-14">his new book</a>, "Before You Know It," was a long drive home from Tennessee to New York. Bargh hopped in the car at 8:30 that morning and told everyone that he planned to complete the 900-mile journey in 12 hours flat - a fun, speed demon's challenge. </p><p>When he rolled triumphantly into town around 8:30 p.m., he headed straight to the local liquor store to grab a bottle of wine before the shop closed at 9. </p><p>"That night as I was having a glass of the wine I had just bought, it dawned on me why I had been so determined to get home by 8:30," he wrote in his book. He realized in that moment how powerful his drinking habit had become - it was strong enough to change his daily actions without any conscience effort on his part. </p><p>"When I realized the real reason I wanted to get back by 8:30, the power of my need to have something to drink that weekend, I was somewhat shocked," he wrote. </p><p>What Bargh doesn't reveal in his book is the simple behavioral trick that helped him quit drinking and stay sober for over 15 years.  </p><p>He did the traditional liquor cabinet purge, but something else actually made the difference: "Tootsie Pops got me through it" he said.</p><p>Every time Bargh wanted to reach for a drink (and there were many, especially in those first weeks), he sucked on a lollipop instead. It wasn't a punitive move - behavior changes that are rooted in <a href="https://www.health.harvard.edu/mind-and-mood/why-behavior-change-is-hard-and-why-you-should-keep-trying">fear and regret</a> don't typically work. Instead, he was indulging in a little sugar high and having some fun. But as habit expert <a href="https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2014-08/sfpa-hwf080714.php">Wendy Wood</a> from the University of Southern California says, "i<span>t's easier to maintain the behavior if it's repeated in a specific context." </span></p><p><span>Switch a concrete, time-triggered old habit for a new ritual, and you won't have to rely so much on self-control and will power to achieve your goal. It becomes automatic. </span></p><p>After about eight years of the sugary pops, Bargh eventually gave them up. He just didn't want them any more. A Yale psychologist reveals the simple trick he used to finally quit drinking for good

<p>Echoing a TED Talk given by motivational speaker Simon Sinek, Clark writes that at Coca-Cola, the marketing team stays focused on the company's primary reason for existence since it was founded by Dr. John Pemberton in 1886: "to make the world happier."</p>
<p>Clark writes: "Coca-Cola was created in 1886 by Dr. John Pemberton, a pharmacist who wanted to create an elixir that would give people a moment of refreshment and uplift, a moment of happiness. And thus our why was evident: to make the world happier."</p>
<p>While this statement isn't necessarily a factual inaccuracy, the historical record on Dr. Pemberton shows that he was probably more concerned with his own morphine addiction than "making the world happier."</p>
<p>A <a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=bSAChoqpnHUC&amp;pg=PA18#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false">slave owner</a> and Confederate soldier, Pemberton suffered injuries during the Civil War and <a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=dFRd2MMrtiUC&amp;pg=PA152&amp;lpg=PA152#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false">became addicted to morphine</a> after he started using it to quell the pain, according to "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Pursuit-Oblivion-Global-History-Narcotics/dp/0393325458/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1388434572&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=0393325458">The Pursuit of Oblivion: A Global History of Narcotics</a>" by <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Richard Davenport-Hines.</span></p>
<p>In 1884, he attempted to use his background as a pharmacist to cure this addiction by creating French Wine Coca, a predecessor to Coca-Cola made up of wine, cocaine, and caffeine-containing kola nuts. The product was <a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=dFRd2MMrtiUC&amp;pg=PA152&amp;lpg=PA152#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false">advertised as being able to cure everything from constipation to chronic diseases</a>, as well as acting as a "most wonderful invigorator of the sexual organs."</p>
<p>With Prohibition looming, Pemberton took the alcohol out of his formula to create the first batch of Coca-Cola in 1886. The drink contained cocaine until the beginning of the 1900s, <a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=dFRd2MMrtiUC&amp;pg=PA152&amp;lpg=PA152#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false">when fear spread throughout the South that black men were using the substance</a> before raping white women, according to "The Pursuit of Oblivion."</p>
<p>Despite the claims made about the drink's restorative powers, Pemberton remained poor and addicted to morphine <a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=bSAChoqpnHUC&amp;pg=PA43#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false">until he died of stomach cancer in 1888</a>, according to "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/God-Country-Coca-Cola-Mark-Pendergrast/dp/0465054684/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1388434759&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=0465054684">For God, Country, and Coca-Cola</a>" by Mark Prendergast.</p>
<p>So while it's perhaps true that Pemberton thought his concoction could "make the world happier," such a short description of the company's origin leaves out a couple critical details.</p>
