 When he started Web Summit from his couch in Dublin with Daire Hickey and <keyword id="112960" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="David-Kelly">David Kelly</keyword>, they had no proper office, no working toilet; yet convinced the likes of Niklas Zennström, founder of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Dozens-Of-Skype-Users-Troll-Witness-Testifying-At-George-Zimmerman-Trial/articleshow/21030732.cms">Skype</a> and <keyword id="265395" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jack-Dorsey">Jack Dorsey</keyword>, co-Founder<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Meet-Twitter-Indias-new-Public-Policy-head-Mahima-Kaul/articleshow/47956812.cms"> Twitter</a> to speak at the first Dublin Web Summit.

	 
	This man is a firm believer of the potential of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Startups-know-Bangalore-is-where-their-heart-is/articleshow/49816015.cms">Indian start-ups ecosystem</a>. He said the Indian market is experiencing the second wave of the ecosystem and technology is driving it.
 “People are entrepreneurial when it comes to tackling the traffic,” jokes Paddy while explaining the potential of <keyword id="107737" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Entrepreneurship">entrepreneurship</keyword> in every Indian. 

	How far behind is the Indian start-ups ecosystem in the global competition? Or, is the real question is it ‘far behind’? Paddy describes the ecosystem step by step.
 

	1. From 2011-2014 the world has witnessed an explosion of Indian start-ups.
 

	“The ecosystem was hell back for years and everything else was moving ahead. It is almost like an elastic band that just exploded.”
 

	And the explosion is not gradual, unlike anywhere else in the world. There is the second wave right now in the Indian market with a diversity of start-ups. It is happening pretty fast. 
 Paddy explains that there was a time when Indian engineers formed a major part of <keyword id="6357722" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="silicon-valley">Silicon Valley</keyword>. Suddenly we don’t see the same number anymore. The talent that rushed to Silicon Valley 10 years ago is rushing back home. These people would not move away from Silicon Valley until they believed that there was a great opportunity here in India. 
 

	2. Where the whole world has moved on from the ecommerce wave and experiencing a surge of second generation start-ups, hardware and mobile communication start-ups, ecommerce is still huge in India. It is time for India to address the question: What comes next?
 

	“If you look at the funding over the last four years, ecommerce is huge and everything else is a little bit smaller in India. But if you look at the history elsewhere in the world, ecommerce was huge first and then everything else expanded.”

It has huge potential and will boom soon.
 

	3. But the interesting thing is where in US, the ecosystem is mainly bound within the Silicon Valley, Indian start-ups ecosystem is dispersed in many different cities.
 

	4. India has kind of leap frogged to the second wave with the penetration of smartphones. The world moved slowly from dot com to applications. But India jumped the desktop and laptop level to directly make it huge in applications.
 

	“People have smartphones before they even know what a laptop is..So there is a whole generation of applications built in India that we probably haven’t seen anywhere in the world.”
 

	5. Where there are innumerable start-ups coming up in the same genre, how do we become unique? Paddy has made Web Summit unique via engineering. He believes one needs to ask one basic question- ‘Why?’ This is what makes their start-up different than the rest. From applying engineering to maintain the queue to applying it to make the most suitable length of name plate for every participant, engineering is the secret. Indian start-ups need to apply it more when it comes to form an incredible idea, making smart money to finding the right market.
 

	But all is not different. Startup ecosystems face one major hurdle in most parts of the world- the mindsets. When it comes to people leaving their 9-to-5 job to work in a start-ups, not many are willing to take that risk. Though the younger generation is catching up, the elder generation is yet to make up their minds.
 

	“My granny doesn’t really like the idea that I left my job and am working in a start-up. She doesn’t introduce me as a start-up founder to her friends yet,” laughs Paddy.

Best video calling apps for all those forced to work from home

India on Sunday offered $10 million to set up a common voluntary emergency fund for the members of <keyword id="2609893" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="South-Asian-Association-of-Regional-Cooperation">South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation</keyword> (<keyword id="8470" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SAARC">SAARC</keyword>) to combat the coronavirus pandemic. In an unprecedented move in the diplomatic history of the world, eight countries of SAARC held a web-summit to chalk out a joint strategy to contain the coronavirus outbreak that has hit the world. The initiative was taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in view of the WHO advisory to avoid public gatherings. The proposal was welcomed and accepted by other members of the SAARC - Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, the Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Prime Minister Modi led the video-conference on Sunday evening by briefing the members on the measures India took to prevent and contain the pandemic since the outbreak of COVID-19, which originated from Wuhan city in China. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bhutan Prime Minister Lotay Tshering, Maldives President <keyword id="6901395" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ibrahim-mohamed-solih">Ibrahim Mohamed Solih</keyword>, Nepal Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Pakistan's Minister of State for Health Zafar Mirza, spoke one after another, giving details about the steps each of them have taken in their respective countries to control the pandemic. Nepal Prime Minister Oli joined the summit even as he had undergone a surgery recently. Prime Minister Modi also offered rapid response medical teams, along with testing kits and other equipment for the SAARC members. "They will be on a standby, at your disposal if required," Modi said, adding that India could also provide online training capsules for medical emergency teams to raise the capacity of emergency staff. Additionally, the Prime Minister suggested that the SAARC members could create an integrated digital database of virus carriers and the people contacted besides using the pre-existing facilities like the SAARC disaster management. Modi also offered to set up a common research platform for the control of epidemics within South Asia for future. Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) can coordinate such an exercise, he said. Modi also suggested that all the members should jointly review the economic consequences of COVID-19 and insulate local trade and value chains from its impact. The video-summit is significant because since 2016, SAARC has been mostly inactive. Prime Minister Modi had refused to attend the 2016 SAARC summit which was to be held in Islamabad, following the Uri terror attack perpetrated by Pakistani terrorists. After Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Bhutan also withdrew from the meet, the summit was called off. SAARC summits are held biennially and hosted by member states in alphabetical order. The last summit was held in 2014 in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Numerous people I have spoken with have told me about excruciatingly slow connections or an inability to connect to the complimentary Wi-Fi altogether.It's a particularly debilitating problem considering that large numbers of Web Summit attendees come from abroad, meaning they don't have Irish data plans to fall back on to access the internet.A Web Summit volunteer told me the problem was supposed to have been fixed on Tuesday night - but problems clearly still remain.<div></div><div></div><div></div>Last year, Web Summit CEO Paddy Cosgrave attacked RDS - the venue for Web Summit - about the Wi-Fi problems. Odisha reports its first coronavirus case The first confirmed case of novel coronavirus in Odisha was reported on Monday after a researcher who recently returned from Italy tested positive for it, a senior official said. The 33-year-old man is being treated at Capital Hospital here, the official said. "His condition is stable and he is not showing any other complications," said Subroto Bagchi, the state government's chief spokesperson on COVID-19. Delhi shuts gyms, spass and restrict mass gathering Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his cabinet ministers held a review meeting with all district authorities on measures taken against the spread of coronavirus in the national capital.  Uttrakhand reported its first case An IFS trainee officer was tested positive in Dehradun on Sunday (March 15) marking the first positive case of coronavirus in Uttrakhand. According to reports, six IFS officers went for a study tour to Spain after which they were screened out, and one of them was detected as positive. As of now, the state has screened 25 suspected patients in Dehradun, in which reports of 15 people were found negative while the reports of other ten people are awaited. 52 Indian students and one teacher arrive from Iran Indian external affairs minister S Jaishankar tweeted on early Monday (March 16) that the fourth batch of 53 Indians has arrived in India from coronavirus-hit Tehran and Shiraz in Iran.  India offers $10 million to SAARC for coronavirus emergency funds India, on Sunday, offered $10 million to set up a common voluntary emergency fund for the members of South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) to combat the coronavirus pandemic. In an unprecedented move in the diplomatic history of the world, eight countries of SAARC held a web-summit to chalk out a joint strategy to contain the coronavirus outbreak that has hit the world. US-India meet over COVID-19 challenge India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo discussed cooperation between the two countries to deal with the coronavirus crisis, according to a US official. While the US is struggling under the growing impact of the disease, India is just beginning to see it with 112 cases and two deaths. The US has recorded 3,155 with 62 deaths as of Sunday (March 15). It's not clear what prompted the rant, but McClure rose from his seat several times and shouted at the crowd during the minute-long video."If you're not f------ pissed right now, what is wrong with you?" McClure said. These 2 brothers each launched $1 billion companies in their 20s - now, Justin Kan says that their success came from how they did chores as kids

The first Indian edition of the planet’s largest tech conference-Surge- just ended. 
 
While almost everything went well, from the sessions to interaction, there was something gravely wrong which defeated the very purpose of the event. 
 The wi-fi and the <keyword id="601036" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="network-connectivity">network connectivity</keyword> was abysmal inside the <keyword id="1609287" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tech-conference">tech conference</keyword>. It was worse for media who could not report their stories on time and one can imagine the condition of those start-ups whose demo depended on the connectivity. One such startup was Blipper who could not demonstrate their product due to this. 
 “We emailed all of our start-ups, the most important thing is you have a demo that doesn’t rely on wi-fi,” said Paddy Cosgrave, the co-founder of <keyword id="6426108" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="surge">SURGE</keyword>. 
 
When asked about his opinion, he was quite honest with the problem and said it was a learning experience. 
 
“I think it happens even to Tim Cook. Twice last year during his product launch, he got pretty angry on stage and that too in San Francisco. It happens everywhere. I think it is easy to point the finger at the wi-fi provider. That’s just an easy thing for everyone,” said Paddy. 
 
“I also hope that we work with Airtel and Vodafone next year to increase the signal. We were told this is going to work. But we have done it many times and been to many conferences and it often doesn’t. We were told that it is 3G, but it is definitely not 3G,” he added. 
 
Media guys were frustrated too. Not only because they were missing the time-constraints but there other issues too. 
 
“I haven’t been able to book a cab back home for the last hour. This a tech conference and you do not expect the wi-fi to be abysmal here,” said Vidya. 
 
But all is not wrong. Amidst all the complaining, Paddy showed the better picture too. During these 2 days of the conference more than 50,000 messages were sent via their app. 
 
 “There were more than 5000 tweets over these 2 days and less than 10 were actually about wi-fi,” said Mike Harvey, Corp Comm of SURGE. 
Paddy concluded that overall it was great as there were only 40 people in the first edition of WebSummit but there were 5,000 in the very first Indian edition. 
 
“WebSumit grew from 40 to 42,000 in five years. I wonder where will SURGE grow in the next five years,” laughed Paddy.

But he has a small worry that the thing he will become best-known for isn't startup related at all.
A few months ago, Rose found a raccoon attacking his dog Toaster in the middle of the night. Without thinking, Rose sprinted to help his dog, picked up the raccoon by its two hind legs and chucked it down a stairwell.
It was an act of bravery, not animal cruelty. Rose posted the video to YouTube. Today, the clip has 7.5 million views.
Naturally, it was TechCrunch Co-Editor Alexia Tsotsis' first question to Rose today on stage at Dublin's Web Summit:
"What did it feel like to throw that raccoon?" she asked.
"In retrospect, it was a dumb idea," Rose replied. Unfortunately he didn't monetize his viral video. He had YouTube ads turned off when he posted the clip. 
"I came down with a little sickness after," Rose said, noting he was lucky he didn't get rabies. His dog, Toaster, also recovered from the raccoon attack. "We are now raccoon free."

Startup Investor Kevin Rose Explains How It Felt To Chuck A Misbehaving Raccoon Down A Flight Of Stairs

Like its thermostats, Nest's smoke detectors will be much more enjoyable to install and use than the household objects we're currently used to. For example, instead of beeping loudly at the slightest hint of smoke and being difficult to turn off, all you have to do is wave your hand in front of the device to tell it you're safe.
Nest's smoke detector also uses an automated voice, like Apple's Siri, to tell you what's happening in your house. 
Fadell says his team hired a bunch of voice actors to create five different kinds of voices that will resonate better with each Nest owner. The dialects include American-English, American-Spanish and British-English. Fadell says Nest "localized tonality of the voices and also localized what the voices say."
That means, the British voice will be much more proper than the one United States owners will hear.
"So in the U.S. it will say, 'Heads up! There' s smoke in the kitchen.'" Fadell explained. "In the UK it will actually say, 'Please be aware there's smoke in the kitchen.'"
Fadell says the goal of each voice was to sound "authoritative" and "motherly."

Nest's Smart Smoke Detectors Won't Be As Polite To Americans As They Will Be To British People

Take, for example, Jony Ive. He's Apple's design guru and he recently said if he wasn't designing hardware, he'd want to give cups a makeover. <keyword id="814387" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tony-Fadell">Tony Fadell</keyword>, another designer who formerly worked at Apple and helped create the iPod, is dedicating his life to smoke detectors and thermostats.
Fadell runs a smart hardware company, Nest, which is worth almost $1 billion. Nest's flagship product was a thermostat that learned your preferences and automatically adjusted your house's temperature accordingly. Now Nest is building smart smoke detectors which can be turned off by waving a hand in front of it. And instead of beeping, Nest talks to you in a polite manner, like Apple's Siri.
At Dublin's Web Summit, Fadell told the audience why smoke detectors are the perfect objects to disrupt.
Fadell explained that today's smoke detectors are incredibly frustrating and fussy, and yet they're mandated by the government. You have to have them installed, even if you hate them.
Fadell also says that 72% of fire-related deaths in the United Kingdom are caused by smoke detectors which have either been ripped off the walls by frustrated owners or have dead batteries.
Nest's smoke detectors change colors when the batteries need to be changed, and give you nightly audio updates about the state of your home. "It lets you know you're being watched to keep you safe," says Fadell.
