As a result, office fashionistas are building their fall work wardrobes.<br /><br />In a world where trends are accelerated by the constant refreshing of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktok-ban-bill-algorithm-byetdance-2024-4">TikTok's For You Page</a> and other social media, it seems like Gen Z is either ahead of the curve or catching up on what's in style.<br /><br />And as more companies require employees to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-rto-faq-document-spells-out-new-rule-2024-9">return to the office full time</a>, workers must navigate professional dress codes while still finding ways to express themselves.<br /><br />So far, Gen Zers have made it clear that they're putting their own spin on the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-employees-dress-in-corporate-goth-style-for-work-2023-9">office dress code</a> — as demonstrated by the "corporate goths" of TikTok who wear all black and thick eyeliner to work.<br /><br />Business Insider spoke to three US-based workers about what's on their fashion wish list this fall.<br /><br />Although they come from different professional backgrounds — and don't necessarily have the workwear restrictions that a big Wall Street firm might mandate — their fashion plans suggest some emerging trends for cool-weather dressing.<br /><br /><h2>Jordan Booker, 25</h2>  <div type="image" title="Jordan Booker standing next to a sign and smiling" height="826" width="620" msid="113747596" hostid="261"></div>Booker works with teens as a health educator. Luxury designers are leaning into <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-clothing-office-siren-business-casual-fashion-2024-8">"corporate core"</a> as more people require high-quality office attire, said stylist and content creator Timothy Chernyaev.</p><p>"You have this new generation of people that came into the workforce during COVID. It encourages water that is already in the sky to condense faster and drop water in certain places. So first, you need moisture. Without it, there'd be no clouds," Friederike Otto, a senior lecturer in climate science at the Imperial College London, and co-founder of the groundbreaking science collaboration <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/climate-action-30-top-global-leaders-working-toward-climate-solutions-2022">World Weather Attribution</a>, said in a statement to the Science Media Centre (SMC).<br /><br /><h2>The real threat behind Dubai's floods</h2>Many atmospheric scientists have dismissed the idea that cloud seeding was behind Dubai's floods. Experts told the SMC that the rains came from a rare thundercloud system, which was already forecast to bring heavy rainfall, and the effect of any cloud seeding would have been tiny.<br /><br />"This is a distraction from the real story here — that due to our collective failure to phase out fossil fuels, we must prepare for unprecedented extremes, which will worsen until we reach 'net zero,'" John Marsham, an atmospheric scientist and Met Office Joint Chair at the University of Leeds, told the SMC.<br /><br />    <div type="image" title="bearded man wearing rain jacket pulls rope on wooden raft in flooded forest river with tent in background" height="1500" width="2250" msid="109383138" hostid="261"></div>Rising global temperatures are leading to heavier bouts of rainfall across the planet, even in places that are typically dry or even in the middle of a drought. Cloud seeding probably didn't cause Dubai's floods. The UAE has been trying to control its weather for years, and the US does it too. 

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The United Arab Emirates experienced torrential rainfall and flash floods, beginning late Monday.</li><li>Videos appear to show planes taxiing down flooded runways at Dubai International Airport. </li></ul><p>Torrential rainfall pummeled the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dubai-laser-beam-shooting-drones-shock-rain-from-the-sky-2021-7">United Arab Emirates</a> this week, resulting in flash floods that caused air travel chaos, closed schools, and deluged homes.</p><p>The rain began late Monday, flooding the UAE with more than half a foot (6.26 inches) of water in 24 hours, according to the Dubai Meteorological Office and cited by <a target="_blank" href="https://abcnews.go.com/International/dubai-flooding-heavy-rainfall/story?id=109321601&amp;cid=social_twitter_abcn">ABC News</a>. That is more than two years' worth of rain in one day, the outlet noted.</p><p>There are claims that cloud seeding may have played a role in the flash floods. The practice sees planes inject clouds with chemicals that can increase rainfall.</p><p>One fatality was reported by police at the time of writing on Wednesday: A 70-year-old man died in Ras al-Khaimah when his vehicle was swept away in the flooding.</p><p>Flooding also occurred in Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. In Oman, 19 people died in flash floods, according to local media.</p><div type="image" title="Dubai road flooding" height="1333" width="1777" msid="109374524" hostid="261" sizebytes="433068"></div><p>Dubai International Airport — recently named the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.travelandleisure.com/dubai-international-airport-most-luxurious-airport-in-world-study-8603681">most luxurious airport</a> in the world — said planes were diverted. Some services now appear to have restarted.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/gunsnrosesgirl3/status/1780307713592897542">Unverified videos</a> on social media appeared to show heavily flooded tarmac, with large passenger airplanes creating waves and taxiing through several feet of water.</p><p>The airport did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider about the videos.</p><div type="image" title="Vehicles drive on a flooded road during torrential rain in the Gulf Emirate of Dubai on April 16, 2024." height="683" width="1024" msid="109361170" hostid="261"></div><p>"We advise you NOT to come to the airport, unless absolutely necessary," an airport spokesperson <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/DXB/status/1780461316605456559">wrote on X</a> on Wednesday.</p><p>They added that planes continue to be delayed and diverted.</p><p>An unnamed couple told the AP that the situation at the airport is "absolute carnage," with some passengers sleeping there or at the Metro station.</p><div type="image" title="car flood" height="1333" width="2000" msid="109374526" hostid="261" sizebytes="129776"></div><p>Dubai recieved more than 5.6 inches of rain by Tuesday evening, around the amount it typically gets in a year and a half, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://news.sky.com/story/carnage-at-dubai-airport-as-uae-hit-by-heaviest-rainfall-in-75-years-13116978">Sky News.</a></p><p>It marks its heaviest rainfall in 75 years, according to a WAM news agency cited by Sky News.</p><p>In a post shared on X, the UAE's National Centre of Meteorology showed the regions that have been most affected.</p> <h2>The UAE may have been playing rainmaker by cloud seeding</h2><p>While images of extreme flooding can show the consequences of the climate crisis, this particular event may have been worsened by a direct attempt to play <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-expanding-weather-modification-program-artificial-rain-snow-2025-2020-12">rainmaker</a> — literally.</p><p>To address water scarcity in the typically dry country, the UAE started using a practice referred to as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/controlling-weather-in-future-2018-5">cloud seeding</a> in the 90s and early 2000s.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.dri.edu/cloud-seeding-program/what-is-cloud-seeding/">Cloud seeding</a> is a method designed to increase the amount of water that falls from a cloud. It involves identifying suitable clouds and then using aircraft or ground-based generators to introduce a chemical agent that facilitates the production of snowflakes.</p><p>Cloud seeding has been used in countries worldwide, including in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/story/cloud-seeding-takes-flight-in-western-us-76737400">western US states</a> dealing with drought, like California, Colorado, Nevada, Idaho, and Texas.</p><div type="image" title="Vehicles are stranded on a flooded street following torrential rain in the Gulf Emirate of Dubai on April 16, 2024." height="683" width="1024" msid="109361171" hostid="261"></div><p>The practice has long been controversial, with critics dismissing it as an attempt to "play God" or being potentially harmful to the environment or public health. Scientists have not documented the harmful impacts of cloud seeding, and <a target="_blank" href="https://e360.yale.edu/features/can-cloud-seeding-help-quench-the-thirst-of-the-u.s.-west">recent studies</a> have suggested that the practice works.</p><p>Ahmed Habib, a specialist meteorologist, told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-04-16/dubai-grinds-to-standstill-as-cloud-seeding-worsens-flooding">Bloomberg</a> that the UAE's cloud seeding operations contributed directly to the heavy rainfall that fell this week.</p><div type="image" title="vehicle dubai" height="1332" width="1776" msid="109374527" hostid="261" sizebytes="111964"></div><p>Habib told the outlet that two planes conducted cloud seeding operations on Monday and Tuesday and that seven seeding missions had been carried out in two days.</p><p>Flight-tracking data analyzed by the AP suggested that an aircraft affiliated with the UAE's cloud-seeding project flew around the country Sunday.</p><p>"For any cloud that's suitable over the UAE you make the operation," Habib told Bloomberg.</p><div type="image" title="A submerged duty machine is seen after heavy rain in United Arab Emirates on April 16, 2024." height="2867" width="3693" msid="109361172" hostid="261"></div><p>The UAE's weather bureau said no cloud seeding had taken place during Tuesday's rain, according to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.thenationalnews.com/news/uae/2024/04/16/live-weather-rain-dubai/">National News. </a>It did not immediately respond to a request by BI for comment.</p><p>Chris England, a weather producer at Sky News, said he doesn't believe cloud seeing to be a reason behind the floods as evidence of it working is "pretty slim at best."</p><p>Despite warning citizens to remain home during the heavy rain, the UAE government's press office said they were "rains of goodness," as the country has dealt with a rise in <a target="_blank" href="https://english.alarabiya.net/News/gulf/2023/07/20/UAE-doctors-say-serious-cases-of-heat-stroke-on-the-rise-amid-soaring-temperatures">heat-related illnesses and deaths</a> that some hope can be alleviated by an increase in rainfall.</p><p>Schools across the UAE continued to be closed on Wednesday, and employees are working from home, according to the Sky News report.</p>

Photos show Dubai overwhelmed by torrential rain &mdash; and may expose the downsides of trying to control the weather

<p>Two trillion, six-hundred and fifteen billion dollars.</p><p>It's an amount so large it's almost impossible to comprehend. It represents the estimated tab for 371 weather and climate disasters in the US since 1980 that topped $1 billion in damage. On the list are many of the country's most destructive tropical cyclones, droughts, and severe storms, the most recent being <a href="https://www.insider.com/tropical-storm-idalia-hurricane-forecast-florida-2023-8">Hurricane Idalia</a>. </p><p>They're the events we can remember — and many more we likely can't because so many more disasters have been breaking into the billion-dollar club in recent years. Decade to decade, costly extreme weather events are increasing in both frequency and intensity as greenhouse gases build up in our atmosphere.</p><p>Yet as big as the dollar figures can get, they can never convey all that is truly lost in these disasters. Countless costs to people get left out of official tallies, including mental and physical trauma. There are harms in the form of environmental damage and supply-chain disruptions. These become, in essence, hidden costs. And many of us are paying them.</p><p>Meet a teacher who nearly died from heatstroke after a hike, a farmer in Texas who watched a hurricane and subsequent deep freeze wipe out much of his citrus crop, and a woman whose nonprofit lost everything to a flood.</p><h2>The true cost of extreme heat</h2><p>Lois Nigrin grew up on a farm and loved getting outdoors. So when she and her husband set off on a hike in Arizona as part of an anniversary trip, she didn't anticipate how wrong things could go. Heat was nothing new for Nigrin — and the couple had trained for the hike.</p><div type="image" title="A portrait photo of Lois Nigrin standing in front of foliage." height="2000" width="3000" msid="103845753" hostid="261" sizebytes="278284"></div><p>Yet the temperatures were so extreme that day in June 2019 that what was meant to be a celebration of decades of partnership ended up leaving Nigrin in a coma with third-degree burns on her backside. Her family rushed to the hospital to be with her in what doctors said would likely be her final hours.</p><p>Nigrin, a teacher in Nebraska, survived the nightmare but still has the scars from her burns and skin grafts, which remind her how close she came to dying. Her ordeal points to the rising cost of extreme heat, the <a href="https://www.epa.gov/climate-indicators/climate-change-indicators-heat-related-deaths" target="_blank" rel="noopener">leading weather-related killer</a> in the US.</p><p>The type of heat that nearly killed Nigrin could add $1 billion every summer to US healthcare costs for things such as emergency-department visits, the Center for American Progress estimates. The problems are also likely to extend beyond the hospital into everyday life. The Atlantic Council predicts that a rising number of sweltering days could zap some $100 billion a year from the nation's labor productivity.</p><p>For Nigrin, the full cost of extreme heat is something she's still grappling with.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/arizona-heat-so-hot-almost-killed-teacher-heatstroke-burns-2023-9"><em>Read more about her story here</em>.</a></p><h2>The true cost of volatile weather</h2><p>Dale Murden has the unflappable demeanor of a farmer who's been forced to deal with the ups and downs of a tough business. He's relied on that trait over his more than 40 years growing citrus and raising cattle in Harlingen, Texas.</p><p>But in recent years, he's witnessed swings that leave him wondering whether times are changing and whether his farm, near the Mexico border, will remain in a subtropical climate.</p><p>Murden watched in back-to-back seasons as a hurricane and then a deep freeze ruined huge portions of his grapefruit harvest and trees. Recovery has taken years.</p><div type="image" title="Owner of farm in orange orchard." height="3840" width="5760" msid="103845754" hostid="261" sizebytes="2181162"></div><p>As the weather gets more extreme, farmers are having a harder time knowing what to plan for. And supports such as crop insurance don't always cover all the costs that erratic weather delivers, particularly for fruit and vegetable growers. In Murden's case, some of his trees suffered damage when extreme cold dipped into the southern edge of Texas.</p><p>An increase in the intensity of cold snaps is one of the more-peculiar developments of a warmer world: The heat can dislodge the bands of cold air that normally hug the Arctic — sending cold air plunging south. That's what Murden experienced in February 2021 when he lost much of his grapefruit harvest.</p><p>Texas leads among states in both cumulative damages due to extreme weather and frequency of these events, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration analysis going back to 1980 found.</p><p>The Texas citrus industry has experienced the fallout from volatile weather. Over the past two decades, citrus growers in Southeast Texas have produced nearly 274,000 tons of grapefruit and oranges on average each season. That was nearly cut in half during the 2020-21 season, according to data compiled by the Texas Valley Citrus Committee. The following year was even worse, yielding just under 74,000 tons.</p><p>Economists at Texas A&amp;M University tallied overall losses at nearly $228 million and more than 1,000 jobs because the citrus harvest relies on seasonal workers who pick fruit.</p><p>In states such as Texas, where costly weather is becoming the norm, it's getting harder for some farmers to get by. That's something Murden knows well.</p><p><em><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/texas-farming-extreme-cold-heat-weather-swings-2023-9">Read more about his experience here.</a> </em></p><h2 id="gi-flood">The true cost of flooding</h2><p>Barb Grant has built her life's work around helping others. </p><p>For someone like Grant, being unable to help people in a crisis is an awful feeling. So when flood waters ripped through the offices of the nonprofit she runs in eastern Iowa, she felt helpless. She had to tell those she would normally assist that there wasn't much her community-aid organization could do for them. Many people have experienced flooding — not just those along the coasts or near rivers. Torrential rains and snowmelt mean flooding is an almost daily event in the US. It's so common that flooding is the most frequent — and costliest — type of natural disaster in the country, according to the nonprofit Pew Charitable Trusts.</p><p>Grant, like an increasing number of Americans, knows what often comes after a flood: a long recovery.</p><p><em><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flood-risks-american-businesses-nonprofit-iowa-still-recovering-2023-9">Read more about her story here.</a></em></p><h2><strong>The true cost of inaction </strong></h2><p>There is more to this story than a set of ruinous tragedies. Data suggests costs of extreme weather are trickling through the economy and could soon overwhelm our social safety net if left unchecked, economists told Insider. <br /><br />Doing nothing is a way to guarantee the tab continues to increase. <br /><br />It could also mean missing out on a huge opportunity. The true cost of extreme weather

<ul class="summary-list"><li>My flight was diverted due to bad weather in 2010. </li><li>I got the last seat on a bus, the last hotel room, and talked my way into a taxi. </li></ul><p>Living overseas can be exciting and rewarding, but most of us long to be home for the holidays. In 2010, my husband and I were living in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-traveling-to-barcelona-spain">Barcelona</a>. We were flying home to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/visit-scotland-mistakes-tourists-make-glasgow-2023-10">Edinburgh</a> on December 23 via a connection in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/expectations-first-london-brussels-visit-turned-out-to-be-wrong-2023-10">Brussels</a>.</p><p>We left Barcelona behind with sunny skies, fully expecting Brussels to be a little colder. What we didn't expect was a diversion that could have derailed all our holiday plans.</p><p>As we got closer to Brussels, the captain explained that the airport was closed due to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/us-more-catastrophic-extreme-weather-than-anywhere-else-in-the-world">poor weather</a>, and we were being diverted to the nearest freight airport.</p><p>As soon as we got off the plane, I realized we were in trouble. Multiple commercial aircraft had landed due to the weather, and the airport was in the middle of nowhere, with only basic facilities. Some passengers were jostling for the few seats available and settling in for news, but I knew we had to act fast.</p><h2>We took a bus to another airport</h2><p>There was no customer service or airline representatives available, only a harassed airport manager in a tiny office — not used to several commercial airlines landing at his freight-only destination.</p><p>He told me there were two buses taking passengers to the nearest alternative airport, Brussels-Charleroi. The first bus had already left, and the remaining one was almost full. Two women were arguing because there wasn't enough room for their large suitcases. Anyone not on the second bus would have to wait for the first to come back, which would be at least a couple of hours. The airport was freezing, and all we could think about was getting home. I spoke to the driver and explained we were traveling light, so he told us to take the last two seats.</p><p>That bus journey was terrifying. It was pitch black, and our driver did an amazing job through thick snow and patches of ice. I was relieved to arrive at Charleroi but unprepared for the chaos.</p><h2>We were able to get a hotel room</h2><p>We were immediately informed there were no flights out. I saw people sleeping on the floor and two women physically fighting over the last baguette in the tiny shop.</p><p>There was a huge throng of frustrated travelers around the only customer service agent — who didn't speak English. Luckily, I could remember some high school French, and with his help, I managed to secure the last hotel room nearby. From there, we booked the last seats on a flight from Brussels airport the next day. We just had to get there.</p><h2>We had a flight home but no way to get to the airport</h2><p>I woke up on Christmas Eve feeling sick with nerves. We had flights home but no way of getting to the airport, over 40 miles away. Most of the local area was shut down, either due to the weather or the fact it was Christmas Eve.</p><p>I called a dozen taxi companies with no luck, even trying the concierge service on my credit card. At our wit's end, we wandered down to reception and saw a taxi loitering outside. I ran over and asked him if he was available. He told me he had a booking, but the person hadn't appeared or responded to his calls, and he was just about to leave. I explained our situation and asked if he would be willing to take us to Brussels airport. His eyes widened, probably at the prospect of a large fare, and after some bargaining (again in my bad French), we had a deal.</p><p>We rushed upstairs, grabbed our things, and then we were off. The airport was an hour away. As we traveled there, we could see why things had ground to a halt — everything was covered in a thick blanket of snow. It would have been pretty if I wasn't so stressed.</p><p>When we got to the airport, we went straight to the departures board. We knew it had been a risk to leave the hotel with no guarantees that our flight would go ahead. My heart sank as I read canceled, canceled, canceled… until it came to ours: Awaiting information.</p><p>For three stressful hours, we sat waiting to find out if we'd be waking up on Christmas morning with our family or on an airport floor. When we were called to board, I was ecstatic, but the airline rep told us the tarmac was still being defrosted and we might not get to take off.</p><p>After a nail-biting wait in departures, we were called to board. As we flew home, I thought of all the things that had worked in our favor. I was so grateful for our own little Christmas miracle, but I knew we helped make it happen.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>122 anglers were stranded on an ice floe that broke off from the shoreline of a Minnesota lake.</li><li>Bystanders attempted a rescue by canoe, but four individuals fell into the open water.</li></ul><p>One hundred and twenty-two anglers were rescued from an ice floe on the Upper Red Lake in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/moved-from-new-jersey-minnesota-worth-it-love-midwest-2023-9">Minnesota</a> on Friday evening, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.facebook.com/BeltramiCountySheriff/posts/680645764245008?ref=embed_post">Beltrami County Sheriff's Office wrote in a press release</a> on social media. </p><p class="p1">The anglers were stranded in a southeastern lake area after a sheet of floating ice detached from the main shoreline. Thirty feet of open water separated the stranded group from dry land after the floe broke off. </p><p class="p1">Before emergency responders arrived, bystanders attempted a rescue with a canoe, resulting in four individuals falling into the freezing water. They were quickly pulled back on to the ice floe and kept warm in a fishing shelter.</p><p class="p1">Local emergency teams responded to a call to the Beltrami County Emergency Communications Center at 4:57 pm, undertaking a coordinated effort to evacuate those stranded on the ice safely.</p><p class="p1">An Integrated Public Alert and Warning System Wireless Emergency Alert guided anglers on the ice to the designated evacuation area.</p><p class="p1">Rescuers using boats and hovercraft reached the group at 6:40 p.m. There were no reported injuries, including among the four individuals who fell from the canoe into the water.</p><p>Dramatic footage showed rescuers battling blizzard conditions as night fell to save the fishermen stranded on the lake close to the Canadian border.</p><p class="p1">Sheriff Jason Riggs praised the efficiency and speed of the local emergency responders. Because of their successful response, additional state resources requested for assistance were canceled.</p><p class="p1">The day before the incident, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources shared a news release warning of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/news/2023/12/28/dnr-county-sheriffs-warn-poor-ice-conditions-across-minnesota">poor ice conditions across the state due</a> to unseasonably warm weather.</p><p class="p1">According to the DNR, there had been at least three ice-angler rescues from Upper Red Lake between December 17 — when 35 people needed to be rescued —  and the major operation on Friday.</p><p class="p1">When the incident took place, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.localconditions.com/weather-beltrami-county-minnesota/mn049/past.php">Beltrami County was reportedly experiencing a temperature</a> of 33.8°F, or 1°C.</p>
