Top Indian cities brace for a wet weekend after Met Dept forecast two weeks of 'above average' rain

More than nine in 10 executives at electric utilities believe that <keyword id="6361617" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="climate-change">climate change</keyword> has contributed to increased extreme weather events that their electricity networks have experienced over the past 10 years, said a study by <keyword id="6370971" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="accenture">Accenture</keyword>. In addition, 90 per cent believe an expected rise in severe weather poses an increased financial risk to their grid businesses. The study -- the sixth edition of Accenture's Digitally Enabled Grid research -- is based on a survey of more than 200 electric utility executives in 28 countries, including India. "Around the world, high-impact weather-related events are becoming more frequent and more severe. In 2018, India's southern state of Kerala suffered its worst monsoon flooding in a century severely impacting the electricity distribution infrastructure in the flood-ravaged areas," Sanjeev Arora, Managing Director and Lead -- Resources, Accenture in India, said in a statement. "Events like this and Cyclone Fani in 2019 in eastern India have shown us the impact of extreme weather conditions in disrupting network operations," Arora said. About 92 per cent survey respondents said they expect severe weather to increase in the next 10 years. At the same time, 88 per cent said maintaining network resilience to extreme weather will result in significant increases in network prices for customers, while only one-quarter of the respondents believe that their businesses are very well prepared to deal with the impact of extreme weather, with one in 12 reporting being poorly prepared. "With various parts of the world affected by droughts, wildfires, and flooding in addition to the U.S. hurricane season just around the corner, climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events and impacting the electricity grid," said Stephanie Jamison, a global industry senior managing director who leads Accenture's Utilities business. "Greater system flexibility, delivered through digital and emerging technologies, will be critical to optimising grid resilience in a cost-effective and timely manner," Jamison added. More than nine in 10 respondents (95%) believe that building greater adaptability into the network -- such as network reconfiguration, embedded storage, redundancy and voltage management -- over the next 10 years will be critical to increasing overall resilience. Further, 93 per cent see system flexibility as the most cost-effective approach to deliver long-term resilience. "Utilities need a forward-looking, holistic and flexible grid resilience strategy, with right regulatory measures, proactive investments and maintenance, to bounce back quickly from major and even multiple events -- whether it's from extreme weather, cyberattacks, earthquakes or even a pandemic," Arora said. A quarter million houses were razed though, and over 860,000 hectares of cropland was destroyed. The overall damage amounted to about $150 million.

About 33 cm of rain fell during a cloudburst and a lake above the 8th century <keyword id="1674376" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kedarnath-temple">Kedarnath Temple</keyword> burst, sending a deluge of water down the valley. Over 110,000 stranded pilgrims were rescued and the actual death toll could be close to 10,000 while 20,000 hectares of <keyword id="6491949" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="agricultural-land">agricultural land</keyword> was severely damaged in the deluge. According to a <keyword id="29740" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bloomberg">Bloomberg</keyword> report based on a document from AON Benfield, economic losses due to the floods in India (mostly Uttarakhand) could be $1.1 billion and insured costs around half a million.

Heavy rain lashed Meghalaya as it crossed into neighbouring Bangladesh while severe storms in Andhra Pradesh caused eight deaths and also flooded 739 hectares of farmland. In the coastal districts of Odisha, there were scattered but powerful storms, producing winds up to 72 kmph. Malkangiri saw the heaviest rainfall at 48 mm.

According to the latest EcoScope report from research firm Motilal Oswal, India’s cumulative rainfall has a reported deficit of 7% as of June 26, 2022 after reporting a surplus of 20% in 2021 and 22% in 2020. As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), April was the <a href="https://internal.imd.gov.in/press_release/20220402_pr_1551.pdf">hottest</a> month for northwest and central India and the third-hottest April the country has seen over the past 122 years, from 1901 to 2022. The daily high temperatures measured each year have also been increasing at a faster rate than daily low temperatures. This indicates that the distribution of temperature is shifting and <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2022/05/02/india-heat-wave-in-pictures.html">changing</a> the ‘normal’ state. Cascading impacts of climate change This radical change in the weather is not good news for a country like India, which is heavily dependent on agriculture as it contributes <a href="https://india.mongabay.com/2021/10/extreme-weather-becomes-the-new-normal-in-indias-main-monsoon-season/">16-20% to GDP</a>, according to Finance Ministry data. In a country like India farmers are heavily dependent on monsoons for irrigating their fields, erratic rainfall and hot summer are the bane for their cultivation. According to a <a href="https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/AG.LND.IRIG.AG.ZS">World Bank report</a>, as of 2015, nearly 62% of the agricultural lands in India are dependent on monsoon rains for irrigation. According to a World Meteorological Organization report released in 2020, India lost more than <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/india-lost-87-billion-to-climate-disasters-in-2020-report-101635272896946.html">$87 billion</a> (approx. ₹6.8 lakh crore) due to disasters such as cyclones, floods and droughts. However, there’s still hope to <a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/2022/04/04/ipcc-ar6-wgiii-pressrelease/">control</a> climate change. It will involve a substantial reduction in fossil fuel use, widespread electrification, improved energy efficiency, and use of alternative fuels (such as hydrogen).

SIMPLY PUT: Extreme weather is the new normal in India

<keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> is set to deploy drones to gather atmospheric data that is currently collated by sending sensors through weather balloons released from at least 55 locations across the country twice every day. The sensors embedded in a radiosonde, which is a telemetry instrument carried by a weather balloon, record atmospheric pressure, temperature, wind direction and speed as the hydrogen-filled weather balloon soars up to 12 km height and transmit data to the ground receiver through radio signals. However, weather balloons and radiosondes are unretrievable as they drift afar from weather stations that release them in the atmosphere. We are now exploring the possibility of using drones to gather this atmospheric data which is crucial for weather forecasting, M Ravichandran, Secretary, <keyword id="158211" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ministry-of-earth-sciences" source="Orion">Ministry of Earth Sciences</keyword>, told PTI. Various studies have suggested that specialised drones equipped with sensors to gather weather data could be an efficient successor to the traditional weather balloons. The <keyword id="6355166" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india-meteorological-department" source="Orion">India Meteorological Department</keyword> (<keyword id="6366970" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="imd" source="Orion">IMD</keyword>) gathers weather data from 550 locations across the country through weather stations and uses radiosonde observations which are then fed into forecasting models to issue weather forecasts. The drones have a key advantage over weather balloons as they can be controlled and guided to fly at low as well as high altitudes. The IMD plans to use drones to gather data from up to five km altitude and compare it with data gathered using the traditional weather balloons. It has invited industry and academia to join the demonstration of the capability of drone technology for weather observations. It is expected that drones should be capable, economically feasible, easily deployable and recoverable and should be technically comparable or superior to currently deployed radiosondes for upper air observations up to the boundary layer of upper air atmosphere, the weather office said. While the flight of a weather balloon usually lasts for up to two hours, the IMD expects to gather data using drones during a 40-minute flight. If successful, a key benefit would be reducing the wastage of radiosondes as the IMD loses more than 100 such instruments every day as weather balloons cannot be retrieved after their flight. So as long as you have an internet connection, you’ll be able to access the ClimaCell BeSpoke Atmospheric Model (CBAM) through Google Cloud’s Public Datasets under the name, ClimaCell - CBAM India Weather Forecasts. “For the first time in history, a private company is offering a full-blown operational numerical weather prediction model for an entire country, working continuously and providing high-resolution forecasts for up to 48 hours ahead,” said Shimon Elkabetz, CEO and co-founder of ClimaCell. Weather of Things and 48-hour forecast The Boston-based company claims that global weather forecasting models have coarse resolution and don’t update very quickly — especially when it comes to developing countries like India. However, CBAM can add millions of new weather observations at a time using its proprietary ‘Weather of Things’ inputs. Instead of relying on satellites, Weather of Things uses everything from wireless signal to car sensors to gather data. According to the company, the data helps it improve its weather forecasting anywhere in the world. The CBAM model uses that data to provide 2-kilometre resolution images at 15-minute intervals. This results in a 48-hour forecast. ClimaCell hopes that the CBAM model will serve as the foundation for new environmental models to more accurately predict floods, air quality and other burgeoning issues of the decade. India versus Pakistan World Cup game: Rain may interrupt second half, as per the weather forecast

The <keyword id="55209" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indian-Meteorological-Department">Indian Meteorological Department</keyword> (IMD) said the southwest monsoon had arrived in Kerala against the normal date of June 1. 
 
"The rainfall over Kerala has been fairly widespread to widespread for the last 48 hours. Out of the 14 rainfall monitoring stations for monsoon onset over Kerala, more than 70% of stations have reported rainfall higher than 2.5 mm for last consecutive two days," IMD said in its statement. 
 
IMD said monsoon has further advanced into entire south Arabian Sea, some parts of Central Arabian Sea, entire Lakshadweep area and Kerala, some parts of Coastal &amp; South Interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, remaining parts of southeast Bay of Bengal and some parts of central &amp; northeast Bay of Bengal. 
 As IMD as predicted a deficient monsoon this year, private weather forecaster <keyword id="6376779" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Skymet">Skymet</keyword> rejected IMD's forecast of likely drought. 
 
Skymet predicted that there would be a good monsoon season this year as the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) phenomenon counters an El Nino weather event. 
 
This should dismiss concerns of farmers who have already been hit hard by unseasonal rains earlier this year. 
 
Skymet, which claims its predictions have been correct for the past three years, forecast rains at 102% of the long-term average over the June-September monsoon season, as against IMD's 88%. 
 
Skymet’s chief meteorologist, G.P. Sharma, said the El Nino threat remains, but the positive IOD effect could prove beneficial. 
 
Skymet said positive IOD creates a barrier in the eastern Indian Ocean and all the southwesterly winds blow towards the Indian sub-continent, causing rains there but leading to droughts in parts of Indonesia and Australia. 
Even Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has downplayed fears of a drought. 
Meanwhile, the Indian Government prepared on war footing to implement the MNREGA plans so that livelihood of farmer is not affected.

Private weather forecaster Skymet rejects drought forecast in India

In computers, the term <keyword id="22518" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="flop">FLOP</keyword> stands for Floating Point Operations Per Second, telling you exactly how many operations a processor is capable of performing each second. A teraflop means one million million FLOPs, while a petaflop represents one thousand million million FLOPs. Remember this as you read further. Around 2007-08, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) was conducting <keyword id="6359992" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="weather">weather</keyword> research using a 7 teraflop computer. In 2018, it uses the power of <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>'s fastest <keyword id="6537818" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="supercomputer">supercomputer</keyword>, named Pratyush, and its whopping 6.8 petaflops of power. That's 6800000000000000 FLOPs, in case you were wondering. It's mind-boggling math, Isn’t it? So much power Contrary to what many believe, Pratyush is composed of two different High Performance Computing (HPC) units. The name Pratyush is given to the unit at IITM, while there's another unit (called Mihir), at the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWA) in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Together, the two HPCs, contribute 4 petaflops and 2.8 petaflops respectively, bringing the total power up to 6.8 petaflops. This is the fourth fastest supercomputer in the world in the weather and climate domain. And all of this power is used to predict the weather as accurately as possible. Why weather? Weather in India is no small talk. The inclement weather events are fast mutating the economic misfortunes of the country. The Indian <keyword id="6358301" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="monsoon">monsoon</keyword> is a critical driver for the country's farm-dependent $2 trillion economy, as at least half the farmlands are heavily dependent on rain. With the recent spate of unpredictable weather events, climate change stakes are becoming real for India. According to an economic survey published in 2017, these weather events are costing India anywhere between $9-10 billion annually and climate change is projected to impact agricultural productivity with increasing severity from 2020 to the end of the century. And to make matters worse, the Indian monsoon is one of the most complex climate systems of the world. The geographic location of India make the system more difficult to simulate and predict. Pratyush with its super computational capacity, though, has been able to make it significantly accurate. Its vast computing ability helps map regions of the country at a 12km resolution for weather forecasts. Why do you need a supercomputer to predict weather? A few years ago, scientists at IITM had to wait for about six hours for calculations to be completed. With their brand new computer, this takes four hours. "Weather and climate forecasting are computationally intensive," says Dr. Suryachandra A. Rao, Project Director at Pratyush. You're probably wondering why two hours matter, right? Well, it likely doesn't. Not without context anyway. The supercomputer allows scientists to predict the weather significantly more accurately and in lesser time, which is what matters. Weather forecasting is done using equations, Rao explained. These equations are solved at different imaginary points on the globe. Earlier, the IITM used to predict data using points placed at every 200 square kilometre, which was later brought down to 100 sq. km. With the help of Pratyush, they have now brought the distance down to 12 square kilometres. These points are akin to pixels on a camera sensor, represented by megapixels. Higher megapixel count (theoretically) allows better quality images. Similarly, closer the dots are placed, more accurate the weather forecast can be. And just like pixels are to cameras, this is just one aspect of weather forecasting. Furthermore, the Earth's atmosphere consists of different layers, 64 to be precise, and the equations have to be run for each of these layers. So, the equations aren't just performed at each dot, but at different layers on these dots. The dots are spread over the entire globe, meaning the actual number of combinations is unimaginable. In fact, Rao says there are 40 levels of the ocean that aren't considered at the moment. To take those into account, the computational power required will be even more, and weather prediction would be more accurate too. See why all that power is required? No? There's more. Scientists don't just run the calculations once. That would be most inefficient. The calculations are run 20 to 30 times, changing variables like temperature, humidity etc. This is done to reduce uncertainty and keep predictions as accurate as possible. But the supercomputer is just a kernel of the weather forecasting process. Reams of data that is sputtered out is then matched with the human computational genius, when chief scientist Rao and his team rack their heads to interpret and compare this data. A rare scene where big data and humans do not bristle, but align to reach a common goal. With a supercomputer worth a whopping Rs. 450 crores (approx. $65 million) brought on and tasked to do weather forecasting, weather conversations should bump itself up from their ‘small talk’ status.

Google in partnership with the Indian Meteorological Department has launched ‘Weather Alerts’ for extreme climatic conditions. Users will get weather alerts like ‘Severe Rainfall Alert’ or for weather conditions like heat wave, cold wave and thunderstorms. Google will display these alerts on the weather widget on Android phones. These alerts will also appear on top of Google Search results in red. It will also show alerts for less severe weather conditions in Search. Users will also be able to ask Google Assistant for weather reports and get spoken alerts. Another major area that Google is doubling down in India is floods. The company is working with local authorities on developing flood related efforts. Levi said that Google has doubled the alert lead time for floods, and that it has covered 175 of the local affected population. Google has also sent out 110 million notifications which reached 20 million affected people at the start of the monsoon season this year, Levi added. Google has also partnered with the Centre of Pollution Control Board in India to help users get the latest updates on air quality information. By searching for air quality information in Google Search, users will see detailed updates. The search results will show places with their air quality index on Google Maps, and also highlight areas with the worst air quality at present. Google has been working with local authorities for its climate-related efforts in India, and it has seen some results in the past few years. Levi said that over 65% of users in India who received weather alerts took action. In August this year, Google alerted people in Sahebganj which is located in Muzaffarpur, Bihar about incoming floods. Levi said this information helped people safely evacuate the place in due time. More than 1500 Indians lost their lives due to extreme weather in 2020 — Google wants to lend a hand to fix it

With the unforeseen weather conditions this year, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=weather+department">weather department</a>, in its recent report, has expressed its concern that India may be heading into its first drought situation in six years. The rain deficit has widened further by 10% and strengthened the <keyword id="51549" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="El-Nino">El Nino</keyword> weather pattern, said the report by the <keyword id="405736" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="weather-department">weather department</keyword>. 
 
Rains during June-September form the main deciding factor for how much <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=farmers">farmers</a> will end up earning annually, as more than half the farm land in India lacks proper irrigation facilities. Agriculture, accounts for about 15% of the country’s $2 trillion economy which means three-fifth of the 1.25 billion people depend on the farming for their survival. 
 
As per a weather department official, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=rainfall+">rainfall </a>is likely to remain subdued even this week over most parts of the country. Weather department fearing India’s first drought in 6 years

<ul><li>IBM’s new <keyword id="424037" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Weather-Forecasting">weather forecasting</keyword> model — IBM GRAF — will run on a supercomputer while using AI, cloud and analytics to predict weather events.</li><li>The company claims its new product is three times more accurate than existing global forecasting models.</li><li>GRAF will be able to predict the weather up to 12 hours in advance and its forecasts will be updated on an hourly basis.</li></ul>Climate change isn’t only crippling the planet but also cost the world nearly $225 billion in 2018 by causing severe distortions in weather patterns making business decisions uncertain. IBM has a plan to mitigate those shocks with its new weather forecasting system that runs on a supercomputer. "As weather conditions become increasingly more severe across the globe, it’s crucial that businesses across India have access to timely and accurate weather data to help stay prepared," said Cameron Clayton, General Manager of IBM and Weather.

 Nearly 72% of Indians believe that the local economy has been affected by a severe weather event in 2019, according to Climate Change Perception in India. The new weather forecasting system — IBM GRAF — will be able to limit that damage. According to the company, it will be able to predict weather conditions up to 12 hours in advance — something that wasn’t available on a global scale until now. And, it won’t be doing it alone. Its calculations will be supported by artificial intelligence (AI), cloud, and analytics to help with decision making — for just for businesses, but users as well. How is weather forecasting going to get better? IBM promises that its predictions will be more accurate and timely. Current global forecasting models — like the European ECMWF and US’ GFS model — cover 9 to 12 kilometres at a time and are updated every six hours. In comparison, IBM GRAF is able to shrink that distance to 3 kilometre — which means its high-resolution images will be 3-4 times greater. It will provide a resolution so fine that approximations will no longer be needed to figure out where thunderstorms are headed and how they might behave. And, its forecasts will be updated six to 12 times more frequently — that’s nearly once every hour. The primary difference between global models and GRAF is how they predict the weather. Where the ECMWF and GFS solve mathematical equations to figure out how the atmosphere will flow, the GRAF model uses a variable-resolution grid — which kind of looks like a net being thrown over the planet.
