Smarter than a smartphone? A new wearable challenges the ‘traditional’ device

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Intel</span></p><p class="caption">Intel CEO Brian Krzanich holding the Curie chip.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Intel has been making a push into connected devices lately, and now it's going to promote those devices using a reality TV show.</p><p>On Tuesday, Intel announced a partnership with Turner and Mark Burnett, the famed producer behind hit reality shows "Shark Tank" and "Survivor," to produce a new TV show called "America's Greatest Makers."</p><p>The goal of the show, which will air on Turner-subsidiary TBS starting next year, is to create <span>"the next big wearable or smart-connected device," <a href="http://variety.com/2015/tv/news/intel-turner-mark-burnett-americas-greatest-makers-1201572460/">according to Variety</a>. </span></p><p><span>Intel has a tiny, button-sized chip called Curie, which is intended for use in wearbale or smart-connected devices, and the new TV show will feature devices built with it. Turner is also expected to launch a strong advertising campaign of the show across its media platform, including TNT, CNN, and Bleacher Report.</span></p><p>Burnett's team is reported to have been working with Intel and Turner for months for the new show. The format of the show is unknown at this point, but Burnett told Variety, <span>"This is much more than just a linear TV series. This is the next evolution of storytelling, told simultaneously across many platforms and in many different ways."</span></p><p><span>The <a href="http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/wearables/wearable-soc.html">Curie module</a>, first revealed <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/intel-new-computer-is-the-size-of-a-button-2015-1">at the CES earlier this year</a>, can be used in devices to track steps or remotely control machines. Intel CEO Brian Krzanich has showcased its capabilities several times, including <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/intel-ceo-uses-button-sized-computer-to-control-robot-spiders-2015-4">at an event in April</a> and today at the Intel Developer Forum, where he gesture-controlled spider robots.</span> </p><p>Intel has been trying to diversify its revenue stream, which has historically been skewed towards the PC division. Intel teams up with 'Shark Tank' producer for a new TV show promoting its button-sized computer

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Reuters/ Robert Galbraith</span></p><p class="caption">Intel CEO Brian Krzanich</p></div><p></p></div></div>Before Brian Krzanich was named Intel's CEO in 2013, he'd spent nearly two decades as an engineer there.</p><p>That means he's seen Intel grow into a $160 billion giant chip maker over the years, and become a dominant force in the PC and data center sectors.</p><p>But about four years ago, Krzanich saw a trend among young engineers that started to frighten him: none of them were using Intel's famous x86 architecture (the standard for all PC microprocessors today) to build chips for the so-called Internet of Things market, the nascent category of devices that connect and share data with each other.</p><p class="p1">"These are the people that are going to be the inventors of the technology in 10 years or 15 years. And none of them were working on Intel's x86 architecture," Krzanich said at <a href="https://cc.talkpoint.com/cred001/120115a_ae/?entity=103_TXHB111">Credit Suisse's Annual Technology, Media &amp; Telecom Conference on Tuesday</a>.</p><p class="p1">Instead, Krzanich noticed the majority of them were using Intel competitor ARM's architecture to design their chips. </p><p class="p1">"We lost touch with the community that was going to be the people who invent the next great machine that we all love and use," he said.</p><h2 class="p1">Two years undercover</h2><p class="p1">So Krzanich and a few Intel engineers started to quietly work on a secret project that most people at the company had no idea about. Krzanich says the project was funded out of the company's factory budget, not the architectural budget, for two years, due to its secrecy.</p><p class="p1">The goal was to create a new chip that was ideally suited for non-PC devices, such as wearables and Web-connected household appliances, but based on Intel's x86 architecture.</p><p class="p1">"I had to go back and get those people in touch with Intel, show that there's a technology, a capability that they cannot match anywhere else on the planet," Krzanich added. <span>"They've got to develop on an x86 and want to develop on our architecture - or we will be locked out of the future."</span></p><p class="p1">It took nearly two years to turn that secret project into a product line called Quark, the chip design system aimed at making small sized, low-powered chips that go into wearbales and IoT devices. Intel first introduced Quark in 2013.</p><p class="p1">Since its launch, Quark has been instrumental in spearheading Intel's move into the IoT space. It's golf ball-sized Edison processors are built on Quark, as is the button-sized Curie chips revealed early this year.</p><p class="p1">In fact, <a href="http://iot-analytics.com/20-internet-of-things-companies/">according to research firm IoT Analytics</a>, Intel is now considered the leading brand in the IoT space, ranking ahead of Microsoft, Cisco, and Google in winning consumer mind share. Although IoT chips only account for about 5% of Intel's overall business, Krzanich often touts it as a major part of its future growth, as it's seeing roughly 10% growth year-over-year.</p><p class="p1">"I really feel like now what we've been able to do is drive the company to be what I call a multi-cylinder engine," Krzanich said at the Credit Suisse event. "The growth engine's going to be the data center, which is primarily the largest one, and then IoT and memory.
