To help fight water scarcity, a machine that produces drinking water from air has been launched in India

As the global population <a href="http://www.un.org/en/development/desa/news/population/2015-report.html">continues to climb</a>, that means more than 2 billion people could soon be starved for world's most precious resource.</p><p>To tackle this mounting issue, one company has turned to a solution in nature.</p><p>Since 2009, the Israeli company <a href="http://www.watergen.com/">Watergen</a><span> has been developing and implementing a technology that extracts clean water from thin air. It all comes down to perfecting a basic <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">science</keyword>. </span></p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/african-cities-water-crisis-2019-3">African cities are running out of water, and the continent needs $66 billion to avoid a crisis of disease and dehydration</a></em></p><p><span>Our atmosphere is full of water vapor, which turns into condensation in cooler temperatures. We often see this effect in the summer, when </span><span>water droplets collect on the outside of an ice-cold glass.</span></p><p><span>Watergen's machine generators harness this same technology by pulling air from the atmosphere, condensing it into water, filtering it for impurities like metal or bacteria, and adding minerals so that it's drinkable.</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5c93dbe65dfa9971ae0cf357-2400/pilot new delhi 3.jpg" border="0" alt="watergen Pilot New Delhi" data-mce-source="Watergen" data-mce-caption="Watergen's pilot program in New Delhi." /></div></div></div></span></p><p><span>The process is similar to that of an air conditioner, only Watergen's machines can produce </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">5 to 6 times more water. The technology has also been <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/watergen-announces-new-automotive-division-that-will-change-the-transportation-industry-forever-300772222.html">tested and approved</a> by the EPA.</span></p><p><span>Watergen's machines come in different sizes, all with different capacities. The largest model provides up to 5,000 liters of water (the equivalent of 18,000 water bottles) per day to places like factories and villages. There's also a medium-sized version for schools, hospitals, and buildings.</span></p><p><span>The company's newest model, a home or office generator called "Genny," produces around 27 liters a day, or the equivalent of 54 water bottles. The model will soon be sold through distributors, who determine the price, but the estimated cost is</span><span> around $1,500 per unit.  </span></p><p><span>Watergen's larger machines have already been introduced to communities around the world, including some in </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">China, India, Vietnam, Mexico, and Brazil. </span></p><h2>Watergen's machines can help during a crisis</h2><p>When a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/california-camp-fire-death-toll-most-destructive-in-history-2018-11">devastating string of wildfires</a> swept California in November, the company used its generator to provide fresh water to local <span>police and firefighters on the ground. Last August, it also distributed water to Kerala, India, after the state endured <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/india/483-dead-in-kerala-floods-and-landslides-losses-more-than-annual-plan-outlay-pinarayi-vijayan-5332306/">massive floods and landslides</a> that killed nearly 500 people. </span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5c644612598e2335743255b4-2400/cape town drought.jpg" border="0" alt="cape town drought" data-mce-source="Kyodo News/Getty Images" data-mce-caption="People wait in line for water in Cape Town, South Africa." /></div></div></div></span></p><p><span>But Watergen's primary purpose isn't to serve disaster zones. It's to address the global water shortage. </span></p><p><span>"</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">We think this is the solution for the world in the long-run," sai</span>d Maxim Pasik, the company's executive chairman. "<span style="font-weight: 400;">It's taking out all the plastic bottles, all the logistics of bringing water from trucks."</span></p><p>In Cape Town, South Africa, <span>government trucks distribute gallons of water to local households. Residents also <a href="https://www.citylab.com/environment/2018/07/how-cape-town-got-to-the-brink-of-water-catastrophe/564800/">line up for hours</a> to fill their plastic jugs with water from local springs, which for some necessitates a <a href="https://www.denverpost.com/2018/02/23/as-cape-towns-water-runs-out-the-rich-drill-wells-the-poor-worry-about-eating/">trek of multiple miles</a>. Many residents have taken to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/african-cities-water-crisis-2019-3">hoarding water in their homes</a>, which can create a breeding ground for disease-carrying mosquitoes.</span></p><p><span>Last year, Cape Town began counting down to "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cape-town-day-zero-photos-inequality-2018-2">Day Zero</a>," when it was estimated to run completely out of water. The city seems to have thwarted the crisis for now, but it still faces the looming threat of <a href="https://qz.com/africa/1525526/cape-towns-day-zero-water-shortage-fear-spreads-in-south-africa/">another drought</a>. </span></p><p><span>Many African cities are undergoing similarly dire circumstances, but <span style="font-weight: 400;">Watergen doesn't yet have the capacity to serve every community in need. As it attempts to scale its production, the company is also working to make sure residents are aware of its technology. </span></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"We need to educate people," said Pasik. "They need to understand that this source of water is trustworthy."</span></p><h2><strong>There are still major obstacles to addressing the water shortage</strong></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Pasik said <span>Watergen</span> doesn't have any immediate competitors, but it's not the only company converting air into water. The <span>startup </span><a href="https://www.zeromasswater.com/contact-us/?utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_campaign=&amp;utm_content=&amp;utm_term=zero%20mass%20water&amp;hsa_tgt=kwd-384047351745&amp;hsa_grp=50186269833&amp;hsa_src=g&amp;hsa_net=adwords&amp;hsa_mt=e&amp;hsa_ver=3&amp;hsa_ad=258434142190&amp;hsa_acc=2226991964&amp;hsa_kw=zero%20mass%20water&amp;hsa_cam=981289406&amp;gclid=EAIaIQobChMI6s7ko8DZ3QIVjJ6zCh00sAurEAAYASAAEgLT6PD_BwE">Zero Mass Water</a> has adopted a similar <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zero-mass-water-solar-panels-solution-water-crisis-2019-1">water-harvesting process</a> using <span>solar panels. </span></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span>The company's panels are around the same price as "Genny" - $2,000 (plus around $500 for installation) - but they save on the cost of electricity. The main drawback is that they </span></span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span>can only deliver about 2 to 5 liters of water a day. </span></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span>In both cases, weather and climate <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2019/01/31/tech/water-from-air-startups/index.html">pose certain limitations</a>. Zero Mass Water's panels work best in sunny areas and won't function in freezing temperatures, while Watergen tends to perform best in hot, humid climates. </span></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span>One added benefit of Watergen's machines is that they're designed to release clean air back into a home or office. But when</span></span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> it comes to providing reliable fresh water to billions of people by 2050, the company has a long way to go.</span></p>

When the vapor's temperature gets low enough, it gets turned back into water.</p><p>The presence of that vapor becomes especially apparent in the summer, when droplets collect on glasses of ice water and air conditioning units drip onto unsuspecting passersby.</p><p>An Israeli company called <a href="http://www.water-gen.com/" target="_blank">Water-Gen</a> does not think of that condensation as a byproduct; instead, it has built machines specifically designed to create and harvest as much condensation as possible. Using a system that uses a set of plastic "leaves" to funnel air in various directions, the team has developed water generators that appear to create pure drinking water out of nothing.</p><p>"The target is to extract water from the air with minimum energy," founder and co-CEO Arye Kohavi tells Business Insider. "We think our solution can solve the problem on the level of countries. It's an immediate solution - governments don't need to spend decades to make a big project."</p><p>Water-Gen is one of seven Israeli companies presenting technological innovations at the United Nations General Assembly this week.</p><p>The company currently makes three sizes of water generating machines, each of which must be plugged into a power source. At 80 degrees and 60% humidity, the biggest can yield about 825 gallons per day, but Kohavi says the technology is easily scalable. The company's medium sized unit produces 118 gallons per day under the same conditions, and the smallest - which is intended for use in a home or office - produces just under 4 gallons per day.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/57e29297b0ef976d008b7238-1920/watergen working large scale.jpg" alt="WATERGEN WORKING Large Scale" data-mce-source="Water-Gen" /><p class="source"><span>Water-Gen</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Water-Gen estimates that at current energy prices, the water generated will cost less than ten cents a gallon.</p><p>The Water-Gen team is looking to bring the technology to two types of places: areas that don't have drinkable tap water, and locations that are warm and humid.</p><p>"If it's hotter or more humid, the system produces more than average, and if it's colder and dryer it produces less," Kohavi explains, adding that as long as temperatures are high enough, there is enough water in the air for the machines to work regardless of humidity levels.</p><p>Luckily, those two sets of conditions often overlap. "Places that do not have drinking water in pipes are usually hot and humid - Latin America, Southeast Asia, Africa - so those two rules are almost equal," Kohavi says</p><p>Water-Gen is currently doing field tests of its products in cities like Mumbai, Shanghai and Mexico City, as well as more rural locations. Implementing it on a large scale would be cheaper and faster, he says, adding that the company is already in discussion with several governments.</p><p>That kind of negotiation is not new for Water-Gen - the company started in Israel by creating military equipment to help get water to soldiers on the front lines. It has since sold that technology to several other armies, including those in the US, UK and France, as well as undisclosed Arab countries.</p><p>In addition to the water generation machines, the company also makes a water purifier that can be powered via batteries or solar panels, and is capable of filtering out everything from water-born parasites like Giardia to poison like cyanide, though it can't desalinize salt water.</p><p>"Water from air is for places that you don't have any water to filter," Kohavi says.</p><p>A few years ago, Water-Gen decided to turn its attention to civilian applications of its technology. The smallest water-from-air machines were a product of that, as was dehumidifying technology that's now used in clothing dryers sold by Siemens and Beko.</p><p>But Nasik says those commercial applications are not the company's main focus. </p><p>"We think it's possible to bring drinking water to all countries. Humidifiers, army solutions, etcetera are a secondary issues," Nasik says. "What's important for us is to bring water to the people. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5812840a362ca4372e8b5338-1000/install group.png" alt="Zero Mass install" data-mce-source="Zero Mass" /><p class="source"><span>Zero Mass</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Our atmosphere contains approximately <a href="http://water.usgs.gov/edu/qa-home-percapita.html" target="_blank">3,100 cubic miles of water</a> - enough to cover the entire planet in one inch of water.</p><p>That water surrounds us in the form of vapor - water's gaseous, evaporated state. We're usually only reminded of this on especially humid days, but our air can actually be considered a water source.</p><p><a href="http://www.zeromasswater.com/" target="_blank">Zero Mass</a>, a sustainable water startup, is trying to create an easy, off-grid way for anyone to harvest that liquid with its first product, Source.</p><p>Each Source unit looks like a solar panel resting on top of a metal box. Company CEO Cody Friesen, a material scientist and engineering professor at Arizona State University, says the device essentially <span>uses sunlight to produce electricity and heat, and which allows a set of proprietary materials to passively catch the humidity in the air.</span></p><p>Friesen won't say how those materials are engineered or what they're made of, but explains that they're designed to have an ideal binding energy for water vapor.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/58128444362ca473028b568e-1000/source at sunset.png" alt="Zero Mass Source at Sunset" data-mce-source="Zero Mass" /><p class="source"><span>Zero Mass</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>He compares the process to the grains of rice you'll sometimes find inside salt shakers in humid locations. That rice, he says, is placed there because it binds more strongly to water than the salt does, so the moisture will stick to the rice, and won't make the salt wet and clumpy.</p><p>"You want to make sure that these materials that are going to passively absorb water from the air hold onto that water strongly enough that they'll do so under dry conditions, but not so strongly that under any condition it takes a lot of energy to get that water back off," he says.</p><p>Friesen says that on average, one Source device can harvest 5 liters of water per day. Because of the device depends on solar power, he says, that number doesn't vary too drastically between dry and wet climates - solar radiation is stronger in dry places where there are fewer water molecules in the air to absorb it, and water vapor is more prevalent in wet places where solar radiation is less intense.</p><p>Once the water vapor is harvested and turned into liquid, the device adds minerals to bring the water's pH levels up, which makes it taste more like the water sold in bottles. It then gets stored in a metal compartment underneath the solar panel that can hold 30 liters. The reservoir gets connected to a pipe, and sends the water from the device to a faucet.</p><p><span>"W</span><span>hen you're making solar energy, you have to use it or lose it unless you have a battery," Friesen says. "In our case, we're storing solar energy in a glass."</span></p><p>Zero Mass boasts that one Source is able to produce enough clean drinking water each day to satisfy a family of four; however if all four members followed the 8-glasses-per-day rule, that family would wind up about 3 liters short. The panels can be connected, however, to combine their outputs. When that happens, Zero Mass programs one to act as the hub, and when that hub uses up the water in its reservoir, it can communicate with the other panels, which act as spokes and sent their water over.</p><p>The Source isn't available for retail sale yet - Friesen says he expects sales to start in early 2017 - so the company hasn't released a cost estimate for individual units. But Zero Mass suggests one device will pay itself off in bottled water savings over two to four years. In other words, each one would be equal to what you'd pay for somewhere between 964 and 1,928 gallons of bottled water at a store like Costco or Walmart. (By our math that would price it somewhere between $1,000 and $4,000 dollars.)</p><p>Several countries and organizations have already started putting the devices to use. In August 2015, Jordan's King Abdullah II installed Zero Mass panels in locations throughout the country. Duke Energy has installed panels in schools, homes, and a clinic in Ecuador, and the Zero Mass earned a USAID grant to deploy panels to refugee camps in Jordan and Lebanon.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/58128477b28a642b0f8b4dd9-1000/ecuador.png" alt="Zero Mass Source Ecuador" data-mce-source="Zero Mass" /><p class="source"><span>Zero Mass</span></p><p class="caption">A Zero Mass Source in Ecuador</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Zero Mass' products seem especially promising for emergency situations, since they are 100% sustainable and don't require and electrical inputs. Though other companies are also devising ways to extract water vapor from the air - Israeli company <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/water-gen-water-out-of-air-2016-9">WaterGen has a similar technology </a>- many require electricity to run.</p><p>Zero Mass estimates that because they don't need to be hooked up to a home's electrical system or to a power grid, the panels only take about 20 minutes to install. That allows the product to easily brought to places where populations don't have access to clean drinking water, like rural communities in the developing world or make-shift refugee camps. Source units could also be deployed to help Californians weather the state's drought, or to provide residents of places with polluted water, like Flint, Michigan, with an alternative source.</p><p>"One of the fundamental tenants [of the business] is that drinking water is a human right and everybody should have access to it and control over it and security over it the same way we have those things around air," Friesen says. "It shouldn't be something that you have to secure through a government source, through infrastructure, or by purchasing water at the store."</p><p>The Source, of course, is not designed to provide enough water for an entire family's total daily usage (the average American uses about 100 gallons per day).
