According to the <keyword id="20039001" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="District-Administration" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="District Administration" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="District Administration">district administration</keyword>, at least 20 bodies have been recovered from the rubble and search operations are underway. The Shimla District Administration held an emergency meeting on Wednesday to address the situation and begin road restoration. "We convened a meeting today due to the landslides and damaged roads. All concerned departments were called together to discuss the transportation system and road restoration. The Superintending Engineer (PWD) has provided a restoration plan, and geologists will assess the situation. A report will be submitted for the restoration of these roads," said Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap. "As for the Rampur floods in Samej areas, search operations have not yet yielded full results. We have recovered 20 bodies out of 33; the search will continue. The bodies were found floating in the Sutlej River, and five locations along the riverbank are being monitored. Major damage occurred in the Samej and Taklech areas earlier. Restoration efforts are ongoing," added Kashyap. The multiple landslides in Shimla majorly affected Boilouganj, Chaura Maidan, and MLA Crossing. The road connecting Chaura Maidan, Boilouganj, and MLA Crossing was severely damaged. "During the last two days, landslides have occurred at several locations in the capital city. The road connecting Boilouganj is now impassable due to the landslides, and we have redirected traffic from Boilouganj Chow through Court Road," Shimla SP Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi said. He further said that the Deputy Commissioner of Shimla has convened a meeting to address the geological aspects, preparedness, and restoration efforts in the city. "We have rerouted traffic to ensure public safety, and the concerned departments will focus on quality engineering for repairs. Additional police personnel will be deployed for traffic management," the SP said. Residents expressed concern over the damaged roads and blamed local authorities for negligence leading to the landslides. Residents are worried about potential water and sewage supply issues as infrastructure is impacted. Karamveer, a resident, expressed frustration that the damaged roads are causing major problems. "We believe the landslides are due to the negligence of the officials. It's the responsibility of the authorities to address these issues, but the local people are suffering. If these problems are not addressed, there will be severe consequences for residents," Karamveer said. "Areas like Boilouganj, Totu, Chakkar, and Bara gaon could face water shortages and other issues due to the damaged infrastructure. Continued construction in these areas is likely to exacerbate the problems," he added.

According to him, it is being said that the oil companies are incurring losses due to which they are rationing the oil. "As we are getting the fuel in three days, there is a compulsion to give limited oil to consumers - so that everyone would get it. Despite this, our fuel stock gets exhausted before the evening," Singh added. The vehicle owners are complaining that they are hardly getting fuel. Even when after making rounds in many petrol pumps, they get fuel in limited quantity. After water crisis, Shimla now facing shortage in fuel supply

As the COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, the footfall of tourists has surged massively to this region. And this has created a water shortage in the city, as per a report by The <a href="https://www.tribuneindia.com/news/himachal/water-shortage-in-shimla-as-tourist-footfall-increases-278911">Tribune.</a> According to the authority, which is responsible for the distribution of water in Shimla municipal limits -- Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam Limited (SJPNL) -- the supply of water is 2-3 million litres per day (MLD) lesser than usual. This has happened mainly because of the weak monsoon. Harmesh Bhatia of SJPNL told The Tribune, “We are getting around 40 millions litres of water per day, which is around 2-3 million litres less than what we require at the moment.” Coupled with the sudden influx of tourists from many nearby states, this had led to a slight water shortage in Shimla. “We are applying cuts for 20-30 minutes as and when required,” Bhatia added further. “We haven’t had much rain in the last 10-15 days, affecting water availability at the source,” Rajesh Kashyap of SJPNL told the newspaper. The most affected area, as per the officials, is Ashwani Khud, as the district’s water level has severely gone down. “The water level in Ashwani Khud, in particular, has gone down considerably, from 4.5 million litres to 1.5 million litres of water,” Kashyap highlighted. Inadequate snowfall during the winters is also one of the major reasons behind the water shortage. Officials of SJPNL say that the company will work on the issue and will try to cope with the rise in demand, if people ensure that there is no wastage of water. Needless to say, these dire circumstances led to widespread protests in the area with over hundred people staging a midnight sit-in outside the waterworks office on Sunday night and then attempting to march to the to the residence of chief minister <keyword id="1724991" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jai-Ram-Thakur">Jai Ram Thakur</keyword>. However, the police stopped the protestors before they could reach Thakur’s residence. They also registered an FIR against <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> councillor Sushma Kuthiala, her husband, and son, who were a part of the march. The protesters later blocked the arterial Chandigarh highway.
