<p dir="ltr"><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table center"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>"I bet you are thinking I'm a little bit crazy," says Martin Riese, as he cracks open a tall glass cylinder of crystal-clear water. A wide toothy smile breaks across the German's face. "That's totally normal."</span></p><p dir="ltr">Riese is the water sommelier for the Patina Group in Los Angeles and has been certified as such by the German Water Trade Association since 2010. He and I are sitting in the <a href="http://www.patinagroup.com/restaurant.php?restaurants_id=133">sunny dining room of the Ray's and Stark Bar</a>, a restaurant tucked into the courtyard of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The restaurant has a "water menu" of more than 40 pages and dozens of water choices, each detailing its mineral content, "taste," and place of origin.</p><p dir="ltr"><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p dir="ltr"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">In front of us are five distinctly shaped bottles of water, which sell for between $8 and $20. It's not quite the price of a quality vintage wine from Napa Valley, but, for a product which most people expect to be free, it can have some sticker shock.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>"When people look through my water menu, their minds are blown," Riese says. "They realize that water has value … Sometimes they see that I have a bottle for $20 and they think I'm insane."</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Riese begins his water presentation by paying homage to the artistic scene in Los Angeles.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>"I believe everyone on this planet has something to offer. Here, there are amazing painters and artists. Painting is their gift. I cannot paint at all. I have a special palette," he says.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span><span>He is passionate about his subject and it shows. </span>Riese has been tasting water since he was a 4-year-old boy in northern Germany. His parents, who worked in hospitality, often took him to vacation hot spots all across Europe. His first concern was always tasting the water from the tap.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>"It was fascinating to me that everyone said it's all tap water and none of it tasted the same to me. I couldn't understand why everyone called it the same thing," Riese says.</span></p><p dir="ltr">What he was tasting was the <a href="http://www.freedrinkingwater.com/water_quality/quality1/15-08-tds-affects-taste-of-water-page2.htm">different total dissolved solids (TDS) level</a> in each tap water. All waters have TDS levels ranging from the very low (between 10 and 40) to the very high (up to 7,000). Those with high TDS levels have a large amount of minerals like potassium, calcium, and magnesium in the water. It can have a huge effect on taste. Generally, waters with higher TDS levels are saltier, harsher, and "harder."</p><p dir="ltr"><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Riese serves only spring and minerals waters that have been filtered by a natural aquifer, giving each water its own flavor, character, and mineral content, determined by geology, soil, and the climate of the place that it's from.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Mass-produced waters like Dasani and Aquafina  - which are not on the water menu - are purified waters, meaning they have been filtered to remove most impurities and minerals. While Riese admits they perfectly fine to drink, he thinks they all taste the same. He finds that boring.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>"A good water should come from nature, not a factory,"</span><span> Riese says.</span></p><p dir="ltr">The first water he opens <a href="https://www.vosswater.com/">is a familiar bottle - Voss</a>. I've had Voss a few times, though I have to admit I am woefully under-informed on different water types. I had long assumed that Fiji and Voss were more expensive than Poland Spring simply because of their unique bottle shape.</p><p dir="ltr"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"></span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p dir="ltr"><span>The Voss bottle is cold but not too cold. According to Riese, it is at the perfect drinking temperature: 59 degrees Fahrenheit. Just cold enough to be refreshing but not so cold that it will give you a stomach ache.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Voss comes from Norway and is made from glacier water, which is very pure, Riese tells me. </span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>My skepticism is running high, because, frankly, my first sip tastes like any other cold, refreshing water. Riese says there's a reason for that. Glacier waters tend to have a very low TDS. Voss's TDS is 40, about the same as most purified bottled waters. In addition, he says, it's very hard to taste a difference until you have something to compare it to.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p dir="ltr"><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p dir="ltr">He brings <a href="http://www.iskilde.dk/">a bottle of Iskilde</a> close. It is smooth and oblong like a bottle one might find filled with a miniature ship. Iskilde water comes from an artesian spring in a conservation area in Denmark. The spring was discovered by a retired insurance broker and his wife, who had wanted to build a house on the property. Before approving the land for a well, the Danish government required the couple to have the water on the property tested by a lab. The water turned out to have oxygen that was more than 8,000 years old and a unique blend of minerals, having passed through 150 feet of alternating layers of quartz sand and clay.</p><p dir="ltr"><span>As Riese pours the Iskilde into the glass, I notice that glass looks like it is filled with sparkling water. While it doesn't look quite like seltzer, there are tons of bubbles. Riese fills me into why. Iskilde isn't a carbonated water, but it does have an exceptionally high oxygen content because it passes through an air bubble in the ground on its way to the spring. When </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">the water is poured out of the bottle, the oxygen dissipates as the pressure from the bottle goes away, leading to the bubbles.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>"</span><span>I'm not Jesus. I can't turn water into wine. I'm more like David Copperfield. I can do magic with water," Riese says with a laugh.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>So what does 8,000-year-old Danish spring water taste like? Pretty good, it turns out. The taste is earthy when compared to Voss, which tastes acidic when I go back to drink it. The texture between the two is the most noticeable difference. If Voss could be likened to skim milk in texture, Iskilde is more like 2% milk.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>The TDS level in Iskilde is 400, 10 times the mineral content of Voss.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>I marvel at the two glasses, switching back and forth between the two to keep trying to taste the difference. Riese explains that most people don't think about the taste of water because it requires so much effort.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>"When we taste things, we actually rely on three senses: taste, sight, and smell. Water is tough because you can only rely on taste. It hopefully has no color or odor," Riese says. </span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>I have to admit,<span> I wouldn't have thought twice about the difference between the two if </span>I weren't sitting there doing a "water tasting." But when you focus on tasting the flavor, the difference in taste is undoubtedly there.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p dir="ltr">The next water bottle has an attractive angular shape and a label that looks trendy. It's <a href="http://beverlywater.com/#up">called Beverly Hills 9OH20</a> and, of course, it's Riese's personal brand. If this is where your BS-meter goes haywire, don't worry. Mine did, as well. But considering the previous water revelation, I give him the benefit of the doubt.</p><p dir="ltr"><span>9OH20 comes from a spring in the Sierra Nevada mountains, which is then combined with a "special chemical formulation" of minerals "to craft the perfect pairing water."  The water's special formulation  - some combination of magnesium, silica, calcium, and potassium - is supposed to accentuate the taste of wines, spices, cheeses, and other foods.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>"Water changes the taste of wine because you drink it right next to it," Riese explains. "A water that is perfectly balanced can actually lower the tannins in the wine so that you will taste more fruit components. That was the concept behind 9OH20. I've crafted a water with the ability to lower acidity and spice levels."</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>I'm not taking him at his word. I tell him to get some foods to try with the water. He has his waiter bring over fresh blue cheese and a red chili paste. I try each and then chase it with a sip of the water. H<span>e tells me 9OH20 should make the taste "open up," whatever that means.</span> While I don't notice anything different with the blue cheese, the chili paste is noticeably more aromatic and not as painfully spicy after drinking the water. According to Riese, that's because the water has silica, which helps the palette deal with the spice.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p dir="ltr"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The next water is Vichy Catalan, the <a href="http://www.vichy-catalan.com.au/">No. 1 consumed sparkling water in the country</a>. It has a TDS level of more than 3,000.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>According to Riese, Vichy Catalan is a popular water in Spain because of the country's climate. People lose a lot of minerals when they are sweating, and Spaniards drink Vichy to replenish those minerals. In addition, Vichy's high mineral levels give it a very salty taste, which pairs well with the rich and salty foods of Spain.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Indeed, when I try Vichy, I find that it has a very sharp, salty flavor, but whether the flavor is sharper than that of any other sparkling water like Pellegrino, I have no idea. </span></p><p dir="ltr"><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p dir="ltr">The last water is very special, Riese says. He only has 10 bottles of it, which he uses exclusively for tastings. The bottle is squat with <a href="http://www.roiwater.com/">a golden top and golden writing on the side - Roi</a>. It comes from the Rogaška Spa and Health centre in Slovenia and has long been used as a medication water, renowned because it has the highest concentration of magnesium of any water in the world. The company behind ROI explicitly states on its website that its water is a health product and is not intended to "quench thirst."</p><p dir="ltr"><span>I soon find out why. Roi's TDS is 7,400, which is "insane," according to Riese. When I try it, I find it has a very strong bitter, metallic taste that I immediately associate with tonic water. While the taste is interesting, I doubt I would ever drink it for fun. I wouldn't say the taste is exactly unpleasant, but it's certainly off-putting.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Riese acknowledges this, saying he would never recommend it to be drunk with a meal. Instead, he says that Roi is best for two things - with your pre-dinner cocktail or after a night of drinking. It works pre-dinner because the high mineral content prepares your stomach for a meal and helps with digestion. It works after a night of drinking because the high mineral content replenishes the nutrients lost while drinking. The carbonation also settles upset stomachs. </span><span>I would love to put it to the test, but unfortunately, Roi isn't currently distributed in the US. The next time I'm in Slovenia I'll have to give it a try.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Riese sits back satisfied. I taste each of the waters again to make sure I wasn't going crazy. Each tastes distinct. He asks me which one I prefer. I point to the Iskilde without hesitation, surprising even myself. It had just the right balance of minerals. As if to emphasize his point, Riese points to different tables around the Ray's and Stark Bar, each with a different brand of sparkling water.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>"You were skeptical? That's okay, I was skeptical too," Riese says. "I was skeptical that [the water menu] would work, but I like variety. How a day 'water tasting' with a water sommelier cured my skepticism about fancy hydration

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://flic.kr/p/6FtZuq">Flickr/Vlad B.</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Have you read the ingredients list on your bottled water lately?</p><p>If not, you might be surprised to see things like sodium chloride, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, potassium bicarbonate, magnesium sulfate, and other compounds.</p><p>No reason to worry, though.</p><p>Salts and minerals like these typically present in trace amounts in your water and are very safe.</p><p>"If you had pure water by itself, it doesn't have any taste," agricultural scientist <a href="http://time.com/3029191/bottled-water-ingredients-nutrition-health/">Bob Mahler told Time in 2014</a>. "So companies that sell bottled water will put in calcium, magnesium, or maybe a little bit of salt."</p><p>There's also this: Salts and minerals, like those found in water, are necessary to help you sweat and perform <a href="https://www.unm.edu/~lkravitz/Article%20folder/WaterUNM.html">other vital bodily functions.</a></p><p>The water you drink, whether bottled or tap, is never just all water molecules made of hydrogen and oxygen - no matter how pure the label claims it is. It has impurities in it.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://pictures.reuters.com/archive/VENEZUELA-PDVSA-MILITARY-GF10000337427.html">Marco Bello/Reuters</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>And water that is chemically pure <a href="https://alumni.stanford.edu/get/page/magazine/article/?article_id=29155">isn't something you'd necessarily want to drink</a>.</p><p>Water purified to that point - distilled water - is naturally and slightly acidic, giving it a tendency to dissolve and leech away salts, minerals, and other chemicals. So if you drink some, it <a href="http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/guest-blog/the-purest-of-them-all/">will pull nutrients out of your body's cells</a>.</p><p>If you just gulped a glass of ultra-pure water, though, don't panic: It won't hurt you as long as you don't consume it regularly.</p><p>Fervent drinking of distilled water can <a href="https://manoa.hawaii.edu/exploringourfluidearth/chemical/chemistry-and-seawater/salty-sea/weird-science-distilled-water">cause you to overhydrate</a> and overheat, since having less salt in your body makes it much harder to sweat. Here's why your bottled water might contain strange ingredients

He's a Los Angeles-based "water sommelier" who markets a line of luxury water called Beverly Hills 90H20.</span></p>
<p>I said, perhaps a little flippantly, that "people with too much money" are consulting Riese. He emailed me to insist that his services, and his water, are not just luxuries for the rich:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>I feel a bit sorry that you might not understand the importance of a variety by water. In Germany we have over 580 different mineral water brands. All waters have different TDS levels (total dissolved solids), meaning different mineral content. Therefore water can taste different and has an impact on food and other beverages. For example on my water list I have a water with a TDS level from under 10 and it rises to a water with a TDS level over 3500.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span></span><span>The problem in America is that a lot of brands you can buy is actual purified water, that means tap water, filtered and bottled. We do not need to discuss the quality of tap water in America, I think especially here in L.A. it's safe to say it's unhealthy to drink.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span></span><span>Therefore is has nothing to do with </span><span class="il">rich</span><span> </span><span class="il">people</span><span> it has something to do with </span><span class="il">people</span><span> who want to live a healthier lifestyle.</span></p>
<p>Did I mention that Beverly Hills 90H20 <a href="http://la.eater.com/archives/2013/06/26/rich_people_things.php">costs $164 per case</a> and comes in individually numbered glass bottles?</p>
<p><span>I reached out to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power to ask them about Riese's claim that L.A. water is unsafe to drink. Spokeswoman Michelle Vargas says he's all wet:</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span><span>Our Water Quality Division regularly samples the water distribution system, and conducts more than 240,000 water quality tests annually for compliance, research and operational improvements. LADWP continues to meet and exceed all federal and more stringent California water quality guidelines ensuring that L.A.'s water is indeed safe to drink.</span></span></p>

A 'Water Sommelier' Explains Why You Jeopardize Your Health If You Don't Heed His Advice

<ul class="summary-list"><li><strong>Dermatologist Dr. Abby Waldman shared a simple skincare routine for people in their 20s on TikTok.</strong></li><li><strong>She said cleansing, moisturizing, and applying sunscreen is a great routine.</strong></li></ul><p>A dermatologist has shared a 3-step routine for great skin in your 20s.</p><p>Dr. Abby Waldman, a certified dermatologist at a hospital in Boston, fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, and an assistant professor of dermatology at Harvard University, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@drabby6/video/7257253583031225643?_r=1&amp;%3B_t=8eQ5mfNFzFi"><u>gave her advice on TikTok</u></a>.</p><h2>Wash your face every night</h2><p>Waldman said to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.insider.com/should-you-wash-your-face-in-the-shower-dermatologists-advise-2019-6">wash y<u>our face every night</u></a>, even if you get back home at 3 a.m. If you wear makeup or sunscreen, you can <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.insider.com/guides/beauty/how-to-double-cleanse"><u>double cleanse</u></a> by removing makeup with <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.insider.com/popular-micellar-waters"><u>micellar water</u></a> before washing your face.</p><p>She said that it doesn't really matter which cleanser you use, since "most gentle ones will do the trick." If you're stuck for recommendations, though, Waldman suggested <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.insider.com/best-dermatologist-recommended-skin-cleansers"><u>Cetaphil's gentle skin cleanser</u></a>, or La Roche Posay's purifying foaming cleanser, both of which you can get for cheap at the drugstore.</p><p>If you have acne, she suggested using a cleanser that contains <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.insider.com/ways-to-clear-skin-according-to-experts-2018-6#look-for-these-specific-ingredients-1"><u>salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide</u></a> to exfoliate and clear out pores — but only once a day to avoid irritation.</p><h2>Use moisturizer and sunscreen, which can be the same product</h2><p>The next step after cleansing is to moisturize and apply <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.insider.com/dermatologist-hacks-how-to-wear-makeup-and-sunscreen-together-2023-6">sunscreen</a>, even when it's not sunny outside — and these can be the same product, she said.</p><p>"If you have oily skin, or your face isn't dry, you can just use a face sunscreen as your morning <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.insider.com/guides/beauty/best-face-moisturizer"><u>moisturizer</u></a>," she said. She recommended La Roche Posay's Anthelion Tinted Mineral Sunscreen.</p><p>On the other hand, if you have dry skin Waldman recommended using a moisturizer that contains sunscreen, as long as it is at least 30 SPF, like Aveeno's Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer or Cerave's AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion.</p><p>Waldman said a nighttime moisturizer should contain <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.insider.com/guides/beauty/ceramides-for-skin">ceramides</a>, hyaluronic acid, urea, or niacinamide to lock in moisture. She suggested Cerave's PM moisturizing lotion, The Ordinary's Natural Moisturizing Factors or Tatcha's Water Cream for a more expensive option.</p><h2>You can add retinoids to the minimum 3-step routine</h2><p>Waldman said that washing your face, moisturizing, and using sunscreen is the "bare minimum" that you should aim to do every day. But you could also consider starting to use a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.insider.com/what-is-retinol-retinoids-skin-care-products-2018-8"><u>retinoid</u></a> in your twenties.</p><p>She said: "If you have acne, then I definitely recommend using a retinoid, even starting as early as your teenage years." This can be over-the-counter adapalene or a prescription retinoid from a dermatologist. This is because retinoids speed up the production of skin cells, unclogging your pores and repairing the skin quicker.</p><p>If not, she says you can start using a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.insider.com/guides/beauty/retinol-faqs">retinol</a> in your mid to late twenties, when you're seeing some changes in your skin but don't yet have <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.insider.com/botox-alternative-anti-aging-skincare-products"><u>wrinkles</u></a>.</p><p>She does warn against using retinoids when you're pregnant, though. This is because there is some evidence to suggest that <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.insider.com/why-retinol-vitamin-a-is-risky-during-pregnancy-breastfeeding-2023-3"><u>retinoids could lead to birth defects,</u></a><u> </u>although no confirmed links have been made.</p>

New Delhi, Dec 22 () Water purifier maker Kent RO Systems Ltd is investing Rs 150 crore over the next three years to set up a new manufacturing unit which will help it double its overall turnover to Rs 2,000 crore, according to a top company official.
<p> The company, which has recently brought to the market a zero water wastage purifier, is looking at add capacity of 4 lakh units annually through its third unit.
</p><p> "We are putting up a new unit in Noida, in addition to the two existing units. It will take about three years to come up. The new plant would have another Rs 150 crore investment in the next three years," Kent RO Systems Ltd Chairman and Managing Director Mahesh Gupta told .
</p><p> At the moment, the two existing units can manufacture about 8 lakh units annually and another 4 lakh will come up, he added.
</p><p> "When all the three units are there, I can do Rs 2,000 crore turnover. If not in three years, we should do in five years," Gupta said, adding the current turnover is Rs 1,000 crore.
</p><p> When asked about the outlook for 2020, he said the company has been growing at 15 per cent and sees itself growing at similar level.
</p><p> "We have come into kitchen appliances for cooking under Smart Chef brand. We will continue to work on them and we will continue to push for zero water wastage purifier. I see myself growing at 15 per cent," Gupta said.
</p><p> Commenting on the zero wastage water purifier, Gupta said it not only addresses consumers' concerns of good quality water but also issues raised by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and environmentalists over water wastage.
</p><p> Stating that with its patented zero water wastage technology, the company has come up with the solution to address those concerns while also maintaining essential minerals in the water.
</p><p> "Our existing products will be modified to zero water wastage and for that a consumer has to spend Rs 2,000 more," Gupta said, adding Kent was ready to share the technology with other competitors for "a nominal cost of Re 1 with credit to the company".
</p><p> The company's RO water purifiers are available at a price range of Rs 17,000 to Rs 1.2 lakh.
</p><p> Gupta further said the water purifier industry has been in consultations with the government, which has been directed by the NGT to come with a notification after it prohibited use of reverse osmosis (RO) purifiers where total dissolved solids (TDS) in water are below 500 mg per litre.

A standout feature was the clever bottle design, which prevents leaks and makes it easier to toss into my gym bag and keep my routine consistent. However, the bottle is still too large for a carry-on. </p><p><strong><a href="http://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=999&amp;u=1088116&amp;m=85809&amp;urllink=nuriabeauty.com%2Fproduct%2Fdefend-triple-action-eye-cream%2F" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Defend Triple Action Eye Cream, $40</a></strong>: The Triple Action Eye Cream has mulberry root (brightens, evens skin tone) and ginseng (reduces fine lines) native to China - skin-care ingredients that have been used in the region for centuries. The mix of natural ingredients, vitamins, antioxidants, and sodium hyaluronate work to restore moisture in the delicate under-eye skin and reduce puffiness and dark circles.</p><p>This was another instance of a helpful and inventive applicator: The top of the small tube is a slanted, disc-shaped smoothing tip that you can spread the product with - minimizing or negating how much you have to tap or pull at the thin skin. In person, it was a rich, fast-absorbing cream that did make my under-eye skin look brighter. In terms of price, while eye cream is often expensive, I get more bang for my buck from my (currently sold out) <a href="http://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=999&amp;u=1088116&amp;m=80811&amp;urllink=maelove.com%2Fproducts%2Fthe-eye-enhancer" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$28 go-to</a>.</p><h2>My overall impression</h2><p>I liked each of Nuria's products, but was most impressed by its thoughtful product packaging. It made using its serum easier and cleansers easier to travel with - even if the bottles were still too large for carry-on bags.</p><p>It's difficult to say for certain whether the regional ingredients used in the products really did contribute to a vastly different skin-care experience. But, regardless, the products were great in their own right.</p><p>The products are all vegan, cruelty-free, plant-based, and non-irritating, even on my sensitive skin. They're also free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates, formaldehyde, formaldehyde-releasing agents, hydroquinone, mineral oil, coal tar, retinyl palmitate, oxybenzone, triclosan, triclocarban, and ethanol. It feels good to know none of that is going on your face in your overnight cream and seeping into your pores.</p><p>All in all, Nuria is a solid skin-care brand - and one that will send a portion of the money you spent to support girls' education across the globe. Nuria is a new vegan skin-care line that combines all the local beauty secrets the founder observed while traveling the world for work

Health officials say ingesting it can cause nausea, severe dehydration, and can even prove fatal in large doses.</li><li>An advocate of MMS admitted picking Africa as a target because drug safety laws are less strict and many people have poor access to conventional medicine.</li><li>In recent months a network supplied by a US pastor has given the bleach to tens of thousands of Ugandans. </li><li>A source told Business Insider that in one instance Red Cross officials were told they were making a video about water treatment, which was later edited to look like a support video for MMS. The video - which the Red Cross has disowned - has been held up as "proof" that MMS works.</li></ul><p>The film shows officials in Red Cross-branded shirts treating men, women and children who have been diagnosed with malaria in Iganga, a town in eastern Uganda.</p><p>They are being given what the narrator claims is an astonishing cure - "Miracle Mineral Solution," or MMS.</p><p>The results of the treatment are miraculous, declares narrator Klaas Proesmans, who describes himself as a charity executive.</p><p>"In total, we identified 154 malaria positive patients together with the local health authorities and the doctors, all of them were treated, and all of them between 24 hours and 48 hours malaria negative, without any side effects," he says.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>getreal155/YouTube</span></p><p class="caption">A Red Cross official gives MMS to a small child in the 2012 video.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Filmed in 2012, the video seems to offer a glimpse of a new breakthrough in malaria treatment, pioneered by the world's most famous aid organization.</p><p>A source at the charity now tells Business Insider that they believe their staff were duped into giving their patients poison.</p><p>MMS advocates with ties to a US religious group told local Red Cross staff they were working on a water treatment project. But they later edited the video to make MMS look like a cure for malaria, the source says.</p><p>The video then became a fundamental piece of "evidence" in a wider movement to push MMS on thousands of vulnerable people, even though the Red Cross denounced the video at the time.</p><p>When contacted by Business Insider, the advocates who made the video denied they did anything wrong. A spokesperson for the church said in an email, "We don't answer FAKE NEWS organizations that lie with an agenda from the REAL owners that are just plain evil and DO NOT want to see the TRUTH get out about how BIG Pharma/Medical industry are paying the politicians and the courts to look the other way while the world is being poisoned by their Toxic DRUGS!" </p><h2>As many as 50,000 Ugandans given MMS</h2><p>MMS is, in fact, a type of toxic bleach which is banned in several countries and can prove fatal in large doses. In the US, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mms-jim-humble-bleach-autism-cure-youtube-2019-5?r=US&amp;IR=T">complainants to the Food and Drug Administration have claimed it is linked it to two deaths</a>.</p><p>This week, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mms-jim-humble-bleach-autism-cure-youtube-2019-5">Business Insider published an investigation into MMS, laying out a slew of medical complaints, and at least one criminal prosecution, in several western countries</a>.</p><p>Recent reporting by outlets including the Guardian and Business Insider have prompted warnings in Uganda from the police, the government, and the US embassy, all of which state emphatically that MMS has no known curative properties.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/british-man-arrested-mms-bleach-bogus-cure-uganda-2019-5">On May 23, three men were arrested over their MMS activities</a>, in an apparent sign that Ugandan authorities are ready to take action.</p><p>In their mission to spread the word about MMS, followers of the Genesis II church have targeted communities in Africa, where they have found less resistance from government officials. <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/may/18/bleach-miracle-cure-uganda-us-pastor-robert-baldwin-sam-little">According to the Guardian</a>, as many as 50,000 people in Uganda may have been exposed to MMS over the years.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>screenshot</span></p><p class="caption">A man wearing the insignia of the Red Cross dispenses MMS in a video posted on YouTube</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2><strong>"This video is not only wrong, it is dangerous"</strong></h2><p>The video has found particular traction on YouTube. It shows locals being used as guinea pigs in bogus medical trials - that the Red Cross says never occurred - depicting people in Red Cross shirts administering MMS to infants, disabled children, and people with HIV and malaria.</p><p>Sam Little, one of the men arrested on May 23, told Business Insider earlier this year that the video inspired him to go to Uganda in the first place.</p><p>Several versions were hosted by YouTube until the company was made aware of them by Business Insider. Some were removed for violating YouTube's policies against harmful content. </p><p>At the time of publication one version had been viewed more than 250,000 times, with other versions uploaded on the platform, subtitled in several languages, viewed thousands of times more.</p><p>In the film, Proesmans - identified as CEO of a non-governmental organisation called the Water Reference Center - says that his organisation partnered with the Red Cross to distribute MMS.</p><p>When reached by Business Insider staff, Proesmans denied that he had misrepresented the Red Cross. "It is not possible," he said. "There was no trial with Red Cross. There is more to the picture than meets the eye."</p><p>"But if you would move from behind your desk into the field with me, you can write about what you will witness with your own eyes," he said in an email.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>getreal155/YouTube</span></p><p class="caption">Klaas Proesmans as seen in the Red Cross video claiming that MMS has curative properties.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The Red Cross denied involvement in the video <a href="https://www.ifrc.org/en/news-and-media/opinions-and-positions/opinion-pieces/2013/ifrc-strongly-dissociates-from-the-claim-of-a-miracle-solution-to-defeat-malaria/">in a 2012 statement</a> claiming it "does not support or endorse in any manner the claims made in relation to this project, and has at no time been involved in 'clinical trials' related to malaria treatment."</p><p>But in 2019, a Red Cross official told Business Insider that the Ugandan Red Cross Society officials were duped into taking part. The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the organisation was approached to partner on a water treatment project. (Sodium chlorite can be used to purify water in extremely small doses.)</p><p>The project was later morphed into the fake clinical trials depicted in the video without the Red Cross's understanding or consent, the source says.</p><p>Emanuele Capobianco, Director of Health at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, told Business Insider, "This video is not only wrong, it is dangerous. MMS is not a malaria cure. It is bleach - it is snake oil. At the very least, it diverts attention away from what actually works."</p><h2>Two bloggers have a theory about how a malaria cure could be faked</h2><p>Dutch skeptic and blogger Pepijn van Erp and <a href="https://mylespower.co.uk/2019/05/20/a-brief-history-of-mms/">British blogger and chemist</a> Myles Power <a href="https://mylespower.co.uk/tag/mms/">have written about the video, and have a theory for how the Red Cross could have been manipulated into helping present MMS as a cure</a>.</p><p>According to van Erp and Power, the advocates could have used sleight-of-hand to make it appear that people had malaria when they really did not. </p><p>Test subjects could have been screened for malaria using a rapid test method, which can give false positives, Van Erp and Power believe.</p><p>The false-positive patients could have then been given MMS, which can be seen in the video.</p><p>According to van Erp, the "patients" could then have been recorded taking a more reliable blood smear method the following day - which would naturally test negative for malaria.</p><p>The pair say that the elimination of the false positives - in people who never actually had malaria - could then be theoretically held up as evidence of a cure.</p><h2><strong>"I'd seen a previous study from the Red Cross, it's on YouTube"</strong></h2><p>Since 2012, advocates of MMS have continued to target communities in Africa.</p><p>A network supplied by a pastor from New Jersey has this year alone distributed the bleach to tens of thousands of people in Uganda, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/may/18/bleach-miracle-cure-uganda-us-pastor-robert-baldwin-sam-little">as reported by the Guardian</a>.</p><p>They too have broadcast their efforts on YouTube. In a video uploaded to YouTube in March, Sam Little, the MMS advocate arrested on May 23, gave an MMS demonstration to officials in a government health centre in the town of Nyankwanzi, western Uganda.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Sam Little/YouTube</span></p><p class="caption">Sam Little mixes MMS in a health centre in western Uganda in a video uploaded in March.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>They are then shown distributing the substance to people with malaria, including a baby and a child who appears to be around eight years old.</p><p>Little claims that tests taken by a health center official show that all those who took MMS were cured of malaria, proving that MMS is a cure. He says he has treated "well over ten thousand people, and fifteen thousand people."</p><p>On May 23, 2019, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/british-man-arrested-mms-bleach-bogus-cure-uganda-2019-5?r=US&amp;IR=T">Little was arrested by Ugandan police</a> in connection with his MMS activities.</p><p>Before his arrest, Little told Business Insider that it was the 2012 video which inspired him to go to Uganda himself. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>YouTube/Sam Little</span></p><p class="caption">A screengrab from Little's YouTube shows his hand on the head of a child being given MMS.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Little spoke to Business Insider via cellphone from a community in Uganda, and said that he had become convinced that MMS works after giving it to a pet. He said he had "proved that it can cure HIV and malaria."</p><p>He claimed to be acting "out of the kindness of my heart."</p><p>He said: "If I was doing this to do something bad, I wouldn't be posting it on my Facebook. I've got nothing to hide. Any money the church gets, it gives out to help people. It's not a thing to make money."</p><p>He declined to give the names of doctors whom he had said could vouch for his claim that he had used MMS to cure HIV and malaria. </p><h2>"They don't have the options that we have in the richer countries"</h2><p>In his film, Little appears alongside a man called Samula Albert Araali. He appears to be the same man as Samuel Albert, whom police in Uganda named as one of the three arrested on May 23.</p><p>In videos uploaded last year Araali claims to be a "bishop" in the Genesis II Church, and distributes the substance to Ugandans whom he says suffer from "malaria, tuberculosis, common coughs and colds and diabetes."</p><p>Araali also cites the Red Cross video, which he says "proves " the substance works.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Samula ALbert Aarali/YouTube</span></p><p class="caption">Samula Albert Araali, an MMS advocate who describes himself as a "bishop" in the Genesis II church.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Araali did not respond to multiple requests for comment from Business Insider, made before and after his apparent arrest. </p><p>After being tipped off about Araali's video, an official from Uganda's National Drugs authority told Business Insider that officials were investigating, and are considering legal action.</p><p>The Ugandan network is organized by American pastor Robert Baldwin, according to the Guardian. When reached by Business Insider, Baldwin insisted that chlorine dioxide was FDA-approved for certain uses in food. "The FDA has a direct conflict of interest to approve any natural health treatments, they are staffed by people from the drug industry. You cannot patent natural health solutions like chlorine dioxide. Therefore, there is no profit," he said.</p><p>In a taped conversation with anti-MMS campaigner Fiona O'Leary, heard by Business Insider, Baldwin said he was training a network of pastors to give MMS to congregants.</p><p>Baldwin, who is based in New Jersey, said he went to Africa because of its weaker regulation.</p><p>"America and Europe have much stricter laws so you are not as free to treat people because it is so controlled by the FDA," he said. "That's why I work in developing countries."</p><p>"Those people in poor countries, they don't have the options that we have in the richer countries.
