Addressing the harsh summers ahead, Karnataka government officials have expressed optimism that the completion of the Cauvery Five — a massive array of treatment plants that will treat sewage to produce 100 million litres of water a day — will help make up for any deficits by July. Meanwhile, many large corporations, including Microsoft, have begun utilising water-saving tap aerators to control water flow in the Bagmane Business Park offices. The city’s water board, the BWSSB, has also launched four mobile apps to help tackle the city’s water crisis. Attempting to bridge a gap between the water department and the citizens it serves, these apps will help residents book water online, apply for borewell permissions, report water misuse and more. At 24% of its total capacity, reservoirs across Karnataka are also drying up. Despite growing shortages, the state government has assured that the Cauvery River reservoir that supplies water to Bengaluru holds sufficient water levels to last at least until June. After that, the pre-monsoon and monsoon rains are expected to replenish the water resources. However, the supply remains much lower compared to the demand, and the only way to survive this summer could be to adopt drastic water-saving measures and a few good spells of pre-monsoon showers.

Water crisis affects businesses across Bengaluru; Is there room for cautious optimism?

If I close my eyes, I can still see my girlfriend (now wife) hiking through the Superstition Mountains east of Phoenix wearing a half top. The other thing I remember is how damn hot and dry it was. So it surprised me, years later, when I heard Google was planning a massive data center in Mesa, just east of Phoenix. <a href="https://mesa.legistar.com/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=3998203&amp;GUID=FC6B9CE4-208A-4AC1-AB2A-40255C1E9F74" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The deal</a> guaranteed Google 1 million gallons of water a day to cool the facility, and up to 4 million gallons a day if it hit project milestones. (That's a lot of water. Arizona residents each use about <a href="https://azwater.gov/conservation/public-resources#:~:text=On%20average%2C%20each%20Arizona%20resident,%2C%20washing%20cars%2C%20etc.)" target="_blank" rel="noopener">146 gallons a day</a>). I was an editor at Bloomberg at the time and we wrote about it <a href="https://time.com/5814276/google-data-centers-water/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>. Since then, the Phoenix metro area has been dubbed "<a href="https://azbigmedia.com/business/heres-why-metro-phoenix-has-become-the-data-center-destination/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">THE data center destination</a>" by locals. Microsoft opened one in 2021 in Arizona. Meta is <a href="https://datacenters.atmeta.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Arizona-Mesa.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">building and expanding a facility in Mesa</a>. These huge data centers use incredible amounts of water because the computing gear inside gets really hot when it processes all those YouTube videos, Zoom meetings, and mobile app sessions. Water is often used to cool the equipment. Google has <a href="https://www.gstatic.com/gumdrop/sustainability/2022-us-data-center-water.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">started disclosing data on this</a>. In 2021, all the company's data centers consumed 4.34 billion gallons of water. That's so much, the company tried to put it all in context by comparing itself to that bastion of environmental stewardship: Golf courses. Google noted that 4.34 billion gallons are equivalent to the annual water footprint of 29 golf courses in the southwest US.Meta <a href="https://sustainability.fb.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/2021-Meta-Sustainability-ESG-Data-Index.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">discloses this information, too</a>. The company's data centers withdrew just over 5 million cubic meters of water in 2021. That's about 1.33 billion gallons. This brings us back to Arizona. The state is running out of water. A few weeks ago, the governor unveiled <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/arizona-limits-development-phoenix-houses-homebuilding-water-shortage-katie-hobbs-2023-6">a plan to limit construction in areas around Phoenix</a> after finding that the groundwater can't support the current pace of building.There are many reasons for this. But these data centers have a part to play in Arizona's water shortage. And that doesn't even include Google's Mesa facility, which hasn't been finished yet. Facebook is still building its data center in the town, too. So more water will probably be sucked out of the state soon. The governor's new limits exclude thousands of already approved developments, so Google will probably get its facility done if it wants it. I asked the company about this and it said the project is still alive. "While we do not have a confirmed timeline for development for the site, we want to ensure we have the option to grow further, should our business demand it," Google stated. Why do big tech companies build data centers in the middle of a desert? It would be better to place them in colder areas that have more water, right? Unfortunately, speed often trumps the environment here. Putting data centers close to large populations is more important. The closer you are to users, the faster your internet services respond. Faster means more usage, which means more digital ads and cloud services sold, and higher revenue. The Phoenix metro area has 5 million residents and has been growing fast, so the data centers follow. Even if there's not enough water. Google, Microsoft, and Meta are working to find more sustainable ways to cool their data centers. They are also spending real money and effort on water conservation projects. But there's only so much you can do to fight the reality of blisteringly hot, dry Arizona days.Microsoft said in 2021 that its Arizona data centers would use "<a href="https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/expanding-cloud-services-microsoft-launches-its-sustainable-datacenter-region-in-arizona/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">zero water</a>" for cooling using adiabatic cooling, which uses outside air instead of water. That only works, though, when temperatures are below 85F. It's going to be 113F in Phoenix this weekend — a little too hot for a hike.

The move by Katie Hobbs, a Democrat, came alongside <a href="https://azgovernor.gov/office-arizona-governor/news/2023/06/governor-hobbs-unveils-100-year-study-protect-valley" target="_blank" rel="noopener">state projections</a> that showed 4% of the demand for groundwater in the region over a period of 100 years can't be met under the current rules.Under the new rule, tens of thousands of developments already approved won't be affected, according to the LA Times report. But regulators won't be approving new developments in areas around Phoenix that depend solely on groundwater supplies.The restriction is the latest sign that years of chatter about the dwindling supply of freshwater in the state — which is more than three-quarters arid or semi-arid — is turning into action. It also comes less than a month after <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/california-western-states-disagree-colorado-river-cuts-proposal-borrowed-water-2023-2">Arizona, California, and Nevada negotiated an agreement</a> to cut the amount of water they draw from the Colorado River by 3 million acre-feet, though the reductions fell far short of the more drastic cuts urged by the federal government. "We have to close this gap and find efficiencies for our water use, manage our aquifers wisely and increase our utilization of renewable supplies," Hobbs said at a news conference, referring to water imported from the Colorado River or other sources, according to the LA Times.Developers have descended upon Phoenix in recent years to meet and capitalize on the region's growth. The Phoenix-Mesa-Chandler area had the <a href="https://www.census.gov/newsroom/press-releases/2023/subcounty-metro-micro-estimates.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">third-fastest rate of growth</a> among the 10 most populous US cities in the year through July 2022, as nearly 73,000 new residents put its population over the 5 million mark, according to the Census Bureau.By early 2022, Phoenix led the nation in developments of new rental homes with 52 communities under construction, double that of the Houston metro, the region with the second most build-to-rent projects. Building was so prolific that the new supply was on track to exceed demand, according to John Burns Real Estate Consulting.Arizona has already been critical of grandiose developments, including a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/arizona-might-stop-construction-on-homes-for-800000-people-2023-1">plan to build homes for more than 800,000 people in the White Tank Mountains</a> an hour's drive west of Phoenix. Sailing along the coastal belt of Kochi, the ‘water metro’ will be a chain of 23 air conditioned ferriers — electrical boats — that will connect 10 islands with the capacity to carry 100 passengers. Kochi — a major port city on the south-west coast of India — will be the first hub in India to achieve such a feet where <keyword id="103729" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="water-transport">water transport</keyword> will be integrated a feeder service to the metro. It’s also the first time that so much investment — ₹7.5 billion — has been put in to improve water transport services. The WiFi enabled ferries can sail up to 18 kmph, which is twice the speed of existing ferries. Expected to take off in December 2019, the ‘water metro’ project has the potential to help over 100,000 islanders than live in the area by connecting the 38 jetties across 16 identified routes. Three years down the line, in 2021, the government has plans to come up with 55 more ferries, bringing the total upto 78, that will have the will have the capacity ferry 50 passengers each. There are also plans to transform the entire network to solar powered boats making the ‘water metro’ the first of its kind — not just in India, but in all of Asia. Checks and balances The water metro will be owned by Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) and is <a href="http://www.newindianexpress.com/cities/kochi/2019/jan/01/more-good-news-water-metro-to-be-a-reality-later-this-annum-1918983.html">expected to cost</a> ₹7.5 billion. The project, however, is underway with a long term borrowing of ₹5.76 billion from German bank, KFW. The ‘water metro’ project is important since it will foster the country’s water transport network. In fact, the project has been recommended by the state government under FAME (faster adoption and manufacture of hybrid and electric vehicles) India scheme, which aims to support electric vehicles market to promote eco-friendly vehicles. The 23 ferries themselves will cost ₹45 million, while the upcoming 55 ferries will amount to another ₹26 million. The government is also considering extending the network to Infopark, after they’re able to construct a waterway corridor along the Brahmaputra river. But there were also reactions that the layman doesn’t want a fancy new metro service, but a metro service that’s clean and functional. One Twitter user sarcastically pointed out how it will be easier for passengers to escape from a train that’s falling into the river — they’ll simply catch the underwater metro instead.

The total tunneling length is around 10.6 kilometers with the entire metro line constituting of 16.6 kilometers.
