I whisked these ingredients together while a tablespoon of butter melted in the slow cooker. I'll be using the boiling-water method as my new go-to and the slow-cooker option for making brunch for friends or <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-best-frozen-breakfast-sandwich-you-can-buy-review">preparing breakfast sandwiches or burritos for the freezer</a>.</p><p>I didn't mind the super-whisk method, and I can see myself trying that one again. The plain-water method was also incredibly easy and is ideal for times when I am out of milk and want to make fluffy scrambled eggs.</p><p>But after multiple attempts with cooking eggs low and slow, I won't be trying that again. In a statement, the space agency said long-term <keyword id="20423869" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="satellite-imagery" source="keywords">satellite imagery</keyword> covering the catchments of Indian Himalayan river basins from 1984 to 2023 indicates significant changes in glacial lakes. <br /><br />"Of the 2,431 lakes larger than 10 hectares identified during 2016-17, 676 glacial lakes have notably expanded since 1984," it said. <br /><br />Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said 601 of the 676 lakes have expanded more than twice while 10 lakes have grown between 1.5 to two times and 65 lakes 1.5 times. <br /><br />It said 130 of the 676 lakes are situated within India, with 65, seven, and 58 located in the Indus, Ganga and the Brahmaputra river basins, respectively. <br /><br />An elevation-based analysis revealed that 314 lakes are located in the 4,000-5,000-metre range and 296 above 5,000 metres. <br /><br />The glacial lakes are categorised based on their formation process into four broad categories -- moraine-dammed (water dammed by moraine), ice-dammed (water dammed by ice), erosion (water dammed in depressions formed by erosion), and other glacial lakes. <br /><br />Among the 676 expanding lakes, the majority are moraine-dammed (307), followed by erosion (265), other (96), and ice-dammed (eight) glacial lakes. <br /><br />ISRO highlighted long-term changes in the Ghepang Ghat glacial lake (in the Indus basin) at an elevation of 4,068 metre in <keyword id="19905191" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="himachal-pradesh" source="keywords">Himachal Pradesh</keyword>, showing a 178 per cent increase in size from 36.49 hectares to 101.30 hectares between 1989 and 2022. These dam failures can be triggered by various factors, including avalanches of ice or rock, extreme weather events, and other environmental factors. <br /><br />Monitoring and studying the occurrence and expansion of glacial lakes in the Himalayan region is challenging due to inaccessible and rugged terrain. <br /><br />Satellite remote sensing technology proves to be an excellent tool for inventory and monitoring due to its wide coverage and revisit capability. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Scientists say that dozens of waterways in Alaska are "rusting," or turning into a dirty orange.</li><li>They said permafrost thawing in the summer is now exposing minerals to the surface, releasing metals and acid.</li></ul><p>At least 75 of Alaska's brooks and streams have been turning a dirty orange likely due to thawing permafrost, with some rivers so impacted that the discoloration can be seen via satellite, a new study says.</p><p>This phenomenon, which researchers say comes amid unusually rapid warming in the region, was first observed in the northwestern state in 2018, scientists told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alaska-rivers-orange-permafrost-melting-iron-acidic-2024-1">Business Insider's Jenny McGrath in January.</a></p><p>The researchers have been stumped by it for years. These waters are becoming so acidic that some are registering pH levels of 2.6, or between the equivalent of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.usgs.gov/media/images/ph-scale">acidity of lemon juice and orange juice.</a></p><p>Pure water has a pH value of 7. Chum salmon and whitefish are also at risk of population decline, they said.</p><p>The changes could be devastating for indigenous tribes in the region, which <a target="_blank" href="https://www.uaf.edu/tribal/academics/112/unit-3/tribalhuntingandfishingrightssubsistenceanilca1980.php">rely heavily on fishing,</a> researchers noted.</p><p>The 75 orange streams observed were scattered across northern Alaska over a span of about 600 miles, the study said. All of them were in remote areas, miles away from human activity that could impact land, such as roads or mining.</p><p>Researchers highlighted satellite images of the Agashashok River, a tributary of the Kuguroruk River, and the Anaktok Creek tributary of the Salmon River in northwest Alaska. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Texas prison inmates have been battling scorching conditions as a relentless heatwave bakes the south. </li><li>More than half of Texas' state prisons do not have air conditioning in living areas.</li></ul><p>Prison inmates in Texas — where more than half of the state's prisons don't have air conditioning in living areas — are enduring scorching conditions as a relentless heatwave continues to bake the southern United States. </p><p>One woman being held at a prison in the Lone Star State said that the conditions are so unbearable from the heat that candy melted before her eyes. </p><p>"It is so hot — like, if I put candy on my table, it will melt even if my windows are covered," 24-year-old Kiera Henderson <a href="https://www.tpr.org/criminal-justice/2023-07-19/texas-prisoners-struggle-to-endure-heat-wave-in-facilities-without-air-conditioning" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told Texas Public Radio</a> in a report published on Wednesday. </p><p>Henderson, who is incarcerated at the Dr. Lane Murray Unit in Gatesville, told the news outlet by email that she has asthma and that the "heat has [taken] a toll on me mentally because I feel as I can't think straight, and I get angry."</p><p>Another inmate at a prison in the state told Texas Public Radio that the heat inside the facility feels like "you're standing over a grill all day." </p><p>The unidentified inmate said that he tries to keep cool by drenching himself in water. </p><p>"The lower you are, the cooler it is, so I put water on my ground and lay in it sometimes. It's just me pretty much naked in the cell," he said. </p><p>Data from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, which manages the state's prison system, showed that 68 of Texas' 100 prisons without AC had average temperatures well over 85 degrees last month, Texas Public Radio reported. </p><p>Temps at some of the prisons reached over 90 and 100 degrees, according to the data. </p><p>This week, advocates and family members of inmates called on officials to put air conditioning in Texas prisons as a heatwave sizzles the state.</p><p>"It's inhumane," state Rep. Carl Sherman said, <a href="https://www.statesman.com/story/news/state/2023/07/18/texas-heat-wave-air-conditioning-prisons/70425943007/">according to the Austin American-Statesman</a>. "This is not a political issue. This is a humanity issue."</p><p>A spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice told Insider in a statement on Thursday that the agency takes "numerous precautions to lessen the effects of hot temperatures for those incarcerated within our facilities."</p><p>"These efforts work," the spokeswoman said, explaining that in 2023 so far there have been eight inmates who required medical care beyond first aid for heat-related injuries "and none were fatal."</p><p>The spokeswoman added that all those incarcerated have access to water and ice and that "fans are strategically placed in facilities to move the air."</p><p>"Inmates have access to a fan and they can access air conditioned respite areas when needed," the spokeswoman said, noting that the agency has also increased its number of cooled beds over the years. </p><p>"The agency recognizes that some inmates are potentially at a heightened risk of heat-related illnesses because of their age, health conditions, or medications," said the spokeswoman. </p><p>She continued, "These individuals are identified through an automated heat sensitivity score that uses information from the inmate's electronic health record. Individuals who have a heat sensitivity score receive priority placement in a housing area that is air-conditioned."</p>

"It is basically about adapting to the changes we are seeing at the base camp and it has become essential for the sustainability of the mountaineering business itself."</p><p>The potential relocation follows recommendations from a committee set up by the government, which oversees mountaineering at Everest. </p><p>A <a href="https://www.leeds.ac.uk/news/article/4327/warm_ice_in_worlds_highest_glacier">2018 study</a> found that the Khumbu Glacier close to the base camp was thinning at a rate of 1 meter — or 3 feet — per year. Now, according to Nepalese authorities, it's unsafe. The camp is used by around 1,500 climbers every year. People urinating at the camp, to the tune of 4,000 liters of pee every day during in peak season, along with runoff from kerosene and other waste products, also impact the glacier. </p><p>The base camp currently sits at an altitude of 5,364 meters (17,600 feet) above the mountain's snowline. Plans could shift it as much as 400 meters (1,310 feet) lower, to an ice-free area. A final decision has not been made, nor has a new base been identified, according to Nepalese authorities. Once plans are finalized, the relocation could come as soon as 2024.</p>

The glacier earned its grim nickname because its total collapse would raise global sea levels by about two feet and expose other Antarctic <keyword id="12737246" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="glaciers" source="Orion">glaciers</keyword> to the same melt process.</p><p>While scientists don't expect that catastrophe for at least 200 years, <keyword id="12737245" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ice-melt" source="Orion">ice melt</keyword> from Thwaites currently fuels about 4% of annual sea-level rise. <a href="https://www.climate.gov/news-features/understanding-climate/climate-change-global-sea-level">Rising ocean levels</a> can cause flooding in coastal areas that are home to millions of people and many of the world's largest cities, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-landmarks-flooding-sea-level-rise-2021-10">damaging</a> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/homeowners-lift-home-sea-wall-house-lifting-hurricane-flooding-insurance-2021-9">property</a> and infrastructure, and leading to more <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/working-through-hurricane-ida-covid-as-a-louisiana-nurse-2021-9">catastrophic storms</a>.</p><p>For now, Thwaites's eastern region is somewhat stable, melting more slowly than the rest of the glacier. That's because an ice shelf — a floating extension of the glacier propped up on an underwater mountain — shields it from warm ocean waters and holds the glacier in place.</p><p>"As it's structured right now, this ice shelf acts like a dam. But it's not going to for very long," Erin Pettit, a glaciologist at Oregon State University, said in a press briefing at the meeting of the American Geophysical Union on Monday.</p><p>Cracks are spiderwebbing across the protective eastern ice shelf, which is likely to disintegrate into hundreds of icebergs within the next five years, "like the shattering of your car's window," Pettit said.</p><p>Once that happens, a wider stretch of ice from the landlocked Thwaites Glacier will be flowing into the ocean — melting into water, calving away from cliffs, or breaking off as icebergs.</p><h2>Thwaites is changing rapidly — and getting more dangerous</h2><div type="image" title="water heaters tents in antarctica snow ice" height="675" width="1200" msid="88283663" hostid="261"></div><p>It's unsettling to see new satellite images of the eastern ice shelf each week, Pettit said, adding, "Each new satellite image we get, we see deeper and longer fractures."</p><p>Pettit and her team are monitoring the ice shelf as part of the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration (ITGC), a team of nearly 100 scientists. The US National <keyword id="11896083" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="science" source="Orion">Science</keyword> Foundation and UK Natural Environmental Research Council have deemed Thwaites so important to immediate sea-level rise that they gave the collaboration $25 million to study the glacier over five years.</p><p>As they near the midpoint of their five-year project, the ITGC scientists' data reveal a glacier growing increasingly volatile.</p><p>"There's going to be a dramatic change in the front of the glacier, probably within less than a decade," Ted Scambos, a senior research scientist leading Pettit's team, who called in from <keyword id="12266096" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="antarctica" source="Orion">Antarctica</keyword>'s McMurdo Station, said during the briefing.</p><p>"It may still take a few decades before some of the other processes that accelerate the ice flow and the retreat take hold. It will, though, accelerate the pace and effectively widen the dangerous part of the glacier."</p><h2>If the ice shelf doesn't shatter, it will come unmoored</h2><div type="image" title="penguin stands on iceberg in ocean" height="1667" width="2500" msid="88283664" hostid="261"></div><p>As the critical eastern ice shelf fractures, warming ocean waters are melting it from below. The diminishing ice is slowly pulling away from the underwater mountain that props it up against the Thwaites glacier.</p><p>Within a decade, Pettit said, the ice will completely lose its grip on the undersea mountain. Her team thinks the fracturing will completely shatter the ice shelf before that, but it's hard to be sure.</p><p>Either way, once the ice shelf collapses, the new exposure to warm ocean waters could triple the speed of ice loss in the eastern third of Thwaites. That will send new volumes of water and ice pouring into the ocean each year, growing Antarctica's contribution to rising seas.</p><p>The researchers are not sure how quickly that acceleration will happen. It could take decades, or it could take centuries, Pettit said.</p><p>"It's daunting. It's a bit unsettling, especially standing on the ice and looking onto the ice sheet, and seeing that this huge area from one side of the horizon to the other is moving at you at about a mile every year," Scambos said. "All by itself, this one glacier is big enough to impact sea level significantly."</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A former travel security officer  shared tips for airline travel on TikTok.</li><li>Caleb Harmon-Marshall says there are a lot of misconceptions about airport security.</li></ul><p>A former <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tsa-officer-job-work-career-2016-10">federal security officer</a> has shared tips for when people go through screening at the airport that few people seem to be aware of.</p><p>Caleb Harmon-Marshall was a TSA agent for about eight years. He is now a travel influencer with 150,000 followers on TikTok, where he's better known as Harmony.</p><p>He runs the travel newsletter <a target="_blank" href="https://gateaccess.substack.com/">Gate Access</a> where he provides tips and tricks for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/air-travel">air travel</a>, such as how to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/you-shouldnt-move-luggage-already-in-overhead-bins-above-seat-2024-1">properly use overhead bins</a>, and which airlines have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@travelwiththeharmony/video/7320368354550713642">a "customers of size" policy</a>.</p><p>Harmon-Marshall told Business Insider that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tsa-precheck-security-etiquette-to-get-through-fast-2023-10">airport security</a> is nothing to fear, and staff are first and foremost there to keep you safe.</p><p>He said while working at the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/busiest-airport-world-atlanta-dubai-tokyo-heathrow-dallas-list-ranking-2023-12#:~:text=1.,Atlanta%20Hartsfield%2DJackson%20International%20Airport">world's busiest airport</a>, Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport, he heard many of the same questions and repeatedly sorted out the same problems. So his main objective with his newsletter is to help people know and understand their rights.</p><p>"People think that the officers are mean and they feel like their prisoners when they go through security," he said.</p><p>"And I just wanted to let passengers know that this is here for your safety, they're working for you, they're not against you."</p><p>Harmon-Marshall said he reads the terms and conditions posted by every airline and breaks them down for people who don't have the time to sift through.</p><p>There are a few main tips he thinks travelers should be aware of, which seem to be little-known.</p><p>For starters, you can bring water, or any liquid, with you through airport security as long as it's frozen. This is confirmed on the TSA website, which states that frozen liquid items are permitted "as long as they are frozen solid when presented for screening."</p><p>"If frozen liquid items are partially melted, slushy, or have any liquid at the bottom of the container, they must meet 3-1-1 liquids requirements," it reads.</p><p>Harmon-Marshall posted a TikTok about this a while back and it amassed more than a million views because so many people weren't aware.</p><p>"If you freeze your water, you can take it past TSA," he said. "A lot of people, they'll get their own bottle, they'll put their water in there, they'll freeze it, and then they'll just thaw out and they'll drink it as it thaws out."</p><p>Food is also permitted, he said, which some don't seem to know — and end up <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/most-overpriced-expensive-things-at-airports">spending excessive amounts</a> on meals when through security.</p><p>"Why would you spend all your money on airport food?" Harmon-Marshall said. "It's very expensive to buy anything at the airport. Buy something before you go, take it with you, and you can even take it on the plane and eat it."</p><p>At the security screening, you also have rights that aren't widely known. For example, you don't have to go through <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tsa-body-scanners-may-be-likely-trigger-false-alarms-black-overweight-2019-4">the body scanner</a> if you don't want to.</p><p>"You don't necessarily have to go through there if you don't feel comfortable," Harmon-Marshall said. "A lot of people feel like the radiation and all that kind of stuff can affect them. Pregnant women, they don't like going through it."</p><p>The radiation exposure is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.epa.gov/radtown/radiation-and-airport-security-scanning#:~:text=Backscatter%20machines%20use%20very%20low,effects%20is%20very%2C%20very%20low.">less than that of two minutes on a plane</a>, but people are entitled not to use it, he said. Instead, travelers can opt for a physical pat-down by a same-sex officer.</p><p>The same goes for the baggage x-ray. If you have sensitive items that might be affected, like camera film, you can ask for them to be hand-checked.</p><p>"They'll just take it and walk it over to the other side and they'll check it by hand," Harmon-Marshall said.</p><p>These rules are not overly publicized, he added, because they slow down the screening process.</p><p>"So they don't really want that to be known," he said.</p><p>A common misconception Harmon-Marshall said he wanted to correct was what happens when passengers are running late and their bags are gate-checked.</p><p>"They will take those bags and go through TSA, not knowing that they still have large liquids, gels, and aerosols," he said. "They think that since the airline counter told them that they can gate check their bag, that those items can still go past security when they can't."</p><p>The majority of items that he saw getting thrown away by TSA were from these bags, he said.</p><p>"You can gate check, but you still can't take these things past security," he said.</p><p>Overall, Harmon-Marshall said it's important to be vigilant before and during airport security. Never wear headphones, he said, because going through the airport before security is not secure — especially since <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/record-number-of-guns-caught-by-tsa-at-airports-in-2023-2024-1">record amounts of firearms were found at security during 2023</a>.</p><p>"Anyone off of the street can go into those spaces," he said. "You want to be very mindful of what's going on in your surroundings."</p><p>People complain that the process seems to change every time the go to the airport, but TSA agents do this on purpose, Harmon-Marshall said, as a safety precaution. So it's vital passengers listen and do what they're told.</p><p>"The key is to listen to that first officer that you see past the ID check, they're going to tell you what to do," he said.</p><p>"I know we tune them out because we're so focused on: I need to make sure I'm doing everything, I don't want to get yelled at. But really take a moment. Just stop, listen to what that officer is saying, and then proceed."</p>
