HUL makes a strong point about the importance of waste segregation with its latest campaign #BinBoy

India faces major environmental challenges associated with waste generation and inadequate waste collection, transport, treatment and disposal. The current systems in India are not able to cope with the volumes of waste generated — about <a href="https://waste-management-world.com/recycling/recycling-in-india-a-market-in-transition/">960 million tonnes</a> of it — by an increasing urban population, and this impacts on the environment and public health. “As per Material Recycling Association (MRAI) India’s recycling rate stands at 30%. The data associated with this recycling rate is largely dominated by highly recyclable materials such as ferrous and non-ferrous scrap, paper, rubber, and tyre etc,” Anurag Asati, co-founder of a waste management company The Kabadiwala, told Business Insider. He noted that the recycling of materials such as plastics is “not very well documented” as a lot of recyclables in the daily garbage and litter does not get collected/recycled because of its low value. Some of it is also informally recycled by waste pickers and kabadiwala associations. The Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban Mission plan relies on a multi pronged strategy — segregate solid waste on source; follow the 3Rs of Reducing, Reusing and Recycling; scientifically process all types of municipal solid waste; and remediate legacy dumpsites for effective solid waste management. India was ranked at the bottom position of the <a href="https://epi.yale.edu/epi-results/2022/country/ind">Environmental Performance Index </a>(EPI) 2022, with 151st position in waste management, 165th position in climate policy. The country also scored low on rule of law, control of corruption and government effectiveness. Apart from the basic awareness, India also needs clearer policies around solid waste management systems in India. “MSME policy and schemes in the waste management sector should be clearer and conducive as it will help form proper structure and processes. Frequent changes in the policies makes it difficult to modify the service/product in the given time frame,” Asati added. He emphasized that the government helps promote MSME and green entrepreneurship culture, but there needs to be more focus on tax rebates, subsidies in land and electricity. “The government can also provide community spaces for storing and material recovery facilities for waste management,” Narke added. MSMEs can aid waste management in India but need more hand holding

<ul><li>HUL has facilitated environmentally <keyword id="2335463" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="safe-disposal">safe disposal</keyword> of more than 1.2 lakh tons of post-consumer-use plastic waste since 2018. </li><li>HUL has partnered with various organisations for the collection of plastic waste.</li></ul>Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) today announced that from 2021 onwards it will collect and process more plastic packaging waste than the plastic in packaging used by it. The company will enable processing of over 1 lakh tons of post-consumer plastic waste through collection from all of the states and Union Territories. Since 2018, HUL has facilitated environmentally safe disposal of more than 1.2 lakh tons of post-consumer-use plastic waste. In 2020, despite the Covid pandemic, the Company stepped up its efforts in the reduction of plastic waste. This has been made possible through investment and partnerships to improve the waste management infrastructure in over 100 towns across India. HUL has partnered with various organisations for the collection of plastic waste including Saahas, Carpe, Recykal, Planet Savers, RaddiConnect, Geoycle, Ramky Enviro. Through its partners and with support from Municipal Corporations, the Company has reached out to housing societies and commercial establishments to improve the collection of plastic waste. The Company is also working in partnership with the <keyword id="162448" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="United-Nations-Development-Programme">United Nations Development Programme</keyword> (UNDP) and the international organization Xynteo. Through these partnerships, material recovery facilities have been set up in Mumbai to demonstrate the feasibility of inclusive end-to-end waste management solutions. Apart from this, the Education Department of Maharashtra, HUL and Xynteo have rolled out a digital school curriculum focused on the importance of segregation, collection and safe disposal of waste. The programme reached nearly one lakh children in Maharashtra during its pilot last year and is currently being scaled across the state. Sanjiv Mehta, Chairman and Managing Director, HUL, said, “Our vision is one where key stakeholders work together to ensure that plastic stays in the economy and out of the environment. As a responsible company, we are committed to playing our part. We believe that this is a collective responsibility, and each stakeholder needs to play an active role in managing plastic waste to fulfil the vision of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.“ Willem Uijen, Executive Director Supply Chain, HUL, explained, “This is in line with the commitment we have made for a circular economy. We have taken a head start on implementing the proposed Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework for plastic waste management. HUL aims to achieve 100% plastic waste collection this year

<ul><li>Last week, <keyword id="178761" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hindustan-Unilever-Limited">Hindustan Unilever Limited</keyword> (HUL) launched its first in-store vending machine model, <keyword id="11605454" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="smart-fill-machine">Smart Fill machine</keyword>, for its Home Care products with the aim to reuse, reduce and recycle plastic.</li><li>We talk to Prabha Narsimhan – Executive Director (Home Care) for Hindustan Unilever and Vice President (Home Care) for Unilever South Asia about the company's latest sustainable projects, how HUL has been focusing on becoming a sustainable company at a larger level, and future goals.</li></ul>Earlier this year, Hindustan Unilever Limited had announced that it would collect and process more plastic packaging waste than what it uses in a bid to achieve 100% plastic waste collection by the end of 2021. HUL has taken one more step forward towards sustainability and achieving this plastic waste neutrality goal. The FMCG giant has launched an in-store vending machine model, Smart Fill machine, for its Home Care products. It allows consumers to reuse and recycle plastic. According to Terrin.org, around <a href="https://www.teriin.org/sites/default/files/files/factsheet.pdf">43%</a> of manufactured plastic in India is used for packaging purposes, and is mostly single-use plastic. India produces an estimated 62 million tonnes of municipal solid waste annually, which is likely to reach 165 million tonnes by 2030. With this growing concern around plastic pollution generated by companies, more and more brands are realising the importance of becoming sustainable and relooking at their packaging strategy. The ban on single-use plastic has also further pushed manufacturers to look at green alternatives. So, to do its bit for the environment and undo some of the damage caused by plastic, HUL’s Smart Fill machine will allow its consumers to reuse their plastic bottles by refilling products from its brands like Surf Excel, Comfort and Vim, to begin with. <div type="Youtube" id="Bkjlj6S5c5E" title="HUL‘s ‘Smart Fill’ machine empowers consumers to reduce plastic waste" thumbUrl="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/Bkjlj6S5c5E/mqdefault.jpg"></div> The vending machine has been installed at Reliance Smart Acme Mall in Mumbai and the project is currently in pilot stage. Sharing how HUL is slashing its product prices to nudge consumers to switch, Prabha Narsimhan – Executive Director (Home Care) for Hindustan Unilever and Vice President (Home Care) for Unilever South Asia said, “As an incentive, consumers are being offered Rs 30 off on the MRP or effective price at the store if they get their own bottle and Rs 15 off to those who purchase the Smart Fill bottle. The flagship brands that consumers can avail these benefits on include Surf Excel liquid for Top Load and Front Load washing machines; Comfort Fabric Conditioner and Vim Dishwash Liquid Gel.” The COVID-19 pandemic has added a safety dimension to sustainability that consumers and organisations must now balance. However, for HUL, the timing couldn’t be more perfect to launch this pilot. Sharing why, Narsimhan said, “COVID-19 in general has been difficult for businesses and brands across sectors. After most COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, we have continued our on-ground efforts with health guidelines in place, for elimination of plastic litter. All our plastic waste collection partners mobilized their resources to minimize disruption without risking the health of their staff members and partners. In fact, COVID has improved our focus on responsible disposal of waste, which is why we feel it is a good time to start this pilot.” After gauging the response at Reliance Smart, the project will be implemented across the country. Narsimhan said, “We believe that upstream interventions such as shifting from single use towards re-use and refill models can be one of the most impactful solutions to plastic waste from an environmental, economic, and social perspective. This project will serve as an ideal pilot to gather learnings and use them to replicate it across the state and the country. Given that this is our first initiative, we have partnered with Reliance. In fact, we had partnered with Reliance Smart across 3 cities, in 2019 to carry out an awareness drive amongst customers on the importance of segregation of waste at the household level for effective waste management. Continuing with our shared vision to manage plastic waste, we have collaborated with Reliance Smart for this pilot project as well. We are hopeful that through our awareness building exercises, we will be able to ensure mass behavioral change in the consumers regarding the role that they can play in curbing this menace. We aim to use learnings from this pilot project in Mumbai to create a scalable refill business model in partnership with prominent retailers and modern trade outlets.” To further promote the cause and get more consumers to visit the mart, HUL has partnered with influencers in the vicinity. Narsimhan shared the marketing plan with us. She said, “One of the key aspects to draw visibility to the vending machine is in-store branding. Our effort would be to make sure that as more and more consumers visit and experience this model, they will be able to help us spread the awareness through word-of-mouth, which we plan to amplify further. We have also tied-up with a few influencers in the catchment areas around the store that will help us create surround sound around the Smart Fill. As the initiative scales up further, we will look at a more broad-based digital campaign that will help us further spread the message across consumers.” Millennials and GenZ today are much more conscious of the brands they choose. Their choice usually depends on how much of an effort a brand is making towards helping the environment and society at large. While Narsimhan agreed that young people are more likely to be the first adopters of refilling, HUL is trying to target all age groups. She said, “Millennials and Gen Zs are by far one of the most conscious consumers we have witnessed in the last two decades. Born in a digital age, this generation is socially aware, more health-conscious and understands the impact of their actions on the environment. All our sustainable interventions are designed to not just cater to their sensibilities, but towards the larger goal of driving real, on-ground impact that is accessible. As for the ‘Smart Fill’ project, we are catering to consumers across demographics including Millennials and Gen Zs. Since Reliance Smart is a retail outlet that garners footfalls across age groups; we intend to bolster awareness and empower our consumers to make smarter decisions when it comes to the issue of plastic waste generation.” But this isn’t the only sustainable effort that the FMCG giant has taken in this year. Walking us through the past action-filled 6 months, Narsimhan shared, “We have substituted commodity polymers with performance-based polymers, optimized the packaging designs and changed the packaging formats of our products to consume less plastic. For example: Pond’s Talc was recognized at the 24th DuPont Global Packaging Award for reducing packaging through innovation. We have developed coating technology to replace the polymer coating in our soap cartons. Our soap bar range cartons in skin cleansing are plastics free. We have started migrating to recyclable flexibles across our portfolio starting with pilots in few brands like soap wrapper of Lux and Lifebuoy, Sunsilk shampoo sachets and Pond’s tubes. We have also started using rPET (80% recycled PET) in our blister packs for personal care brands such as Pepsodent toothbrush, Vaseline lip care. We have launched Vim liquid bottles having 50% rPET. We have initiated use of rHDPE (25% recycled HDPE) in our personal care bottles like Tresemme, Sunsilk, Surf Excel Laundry liquid and Comfort fabric conditioner.” Brands play a huge role in bringing about change in society and Narsimhan said that brands should use that to empower consumers to make better choices. She said, “Consumers relate to brands that resonate with their own way of thinking. Brands that don’t just advocate such ideas but put them into measurable, result-oriented action. Therefore, brands can and must play their part in empowering consumers to make sustainable choices. And one of the key aspects of this empowerment journey is by offering choices that are accessible and hassle-free. With our plastic waste collection initiative and now the refill machine, we are encouraging and empowering our consumers to be a part of this solution. These small changes that consumers make on a day-to-day basis can lead to a sizable impact overall.” When it comes to sustainability, we often hear the three popular R’s – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle in every marketing campaign. Many companies have promoted only recycle and reuse. However, reduce hits at consumption. As a result, HUL has also formulated long-term goals to focus on reduction of plastic. It has committed that by 2025 100% of the company’s plastic packaging is reusable, recyclable, or compostable and halving use of virgin plastic by reducing the absolute use of plastic packaging and accelerating use of recycled plastic. Shedding some light on HUL’s larger sustainability efforts and vision, Narsimhan said, “We are committed to accelerating a transition to a circular economy, moving from the linear take-make-dispose model to a regenerative approach, which keeps materials at their highest value for as long as possible. We recently announced that from 2021 onwards, we will collect and facilitate environment-friendly processing of more plastic packaging waste than the plastic we use in our packaging. Since 2018, we have facilitated safe disposal of more than 1.5 lakh tons of post-consumer use plastic waste with the help of collection and disposal partners across India. We are also working closely with the government and other partners such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Xynteo for end-to-end pilot projects for plastic waste management. Apart from this, the Education Department of Maharashtra, HUL and Xynteo have rolled out a digital school curriculum focused on the importance of segregation, collection and safe disposal of waste. Hindustan Unilever Limited’s Prabha Narsimhan shares latest steps that the company has taken towards sustainability to achieve its goal of 100% plastic waste collection by the end of 2021

The remaining 1.1 lakh MT is generally dumped in open landfills, which overflows and pollutes the surrounding land, air and groundwater. Out of the 35 states, only eight process more than 50% of the garbage from the cities, including <keyword id="66" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi">Delhi</keyword> (at 55%), and no state has been able to process all 100% of its waste until now. The state-wise data on the website of the Urban Affairs Ministry shows that some, like Arunachal Pradesh and Dadra &amp; Nagar Haveli, don't process municipal garbage at all. Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar and Jharkhand are stuck at less than 10%. Chhattisgarh tops the list with 74%, followed by Telangana (67%), Sikkim (66%) and Goa (62%). These are the only four states that process more than 60% of their daily garbage. <div type="image" title="3750-01" tempid="540989" msid="65196998" hostid="261"></div>

 On the plus side, 61,846, which is three-quarters of the 84,000 municipal wards in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>, have been able to achieve 100% door-to-door waste collection. The Maharashtra Municipal Ward generates the most garbage daily at 22,570 MT, followed by Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Gujarat and Karnataka. However, the lack of proper disposal facilities nullifies the success. According to the <keyword id="6357976" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Centre-for-Science-and-Environment">Centre for Science and Environment</keyword> (<keyword id="6367898" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="CSE">CSE</keyword>) that is based in Delhi, the cities are now running out of lands to dump their waste on. Therefore, they have now switched to dumping it in the ‘backyards’ of smaller towns, suburbs and villages. The CSE backs segregation at source, recycling and reusing against the centralised approach of landfills. A change in the behaviour of citizens and an approach of local <keyword id="6359012" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="waste-management">waste management</keyword> solutions are needed to make it to the ideal of ‘Clean India’, says CSE.

Indian cities are failing miserably at garbage management

Meanwhile, most are operating with a highly stripped-back service in the premium classes, begging the question of whether it's still worth shelling out to fly business or <keyword id="131186" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="first-class">first class</keyword> when travel restrictions life but these measures are still in place.However, travel experts told Insider that although a business or first class ticket may not be worth it right now if you're fussed about all the perks, it's likely that overall, it's about to become more appealing than ever.<h2>Airlines have drastically stripped back the business and first class experience</h2>Although all non-essential travel has been advised against for the past few months as part of various countries' national lockdowns, some people have had to fly.The flight experience, however, isn't currently what it used to be, both due to airlines attempting to limit human contact and stay afloat economically — Emirates, for example, has cut its inflight WiFi and live TV to cut costs, <a href="https://simpleflying.com/emirates-cuts-wifi-tv/">Simple Flying reports</a>, as has <a href="https://www.qantas.com/gb/en/travel-info/travel-updates/coronavirus/impact-to-lounges.html">Qantas</a>.Middle seats have been largely removed in economy to aid social distancing, cabin crew on airlines such as <a href="https://www.insider.com/qatar-airways-introduces-full-body-protective-gear-cabin-crew-coronavirus-2020-5">Qatar</a> are wearing full body Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and others have introduced <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-flying-airports-air-travel-could-change-future#temperature-checks-might-become-the-norm-2">temperature checks prior to take-off</a>.<div type="image" title="qatar airways ppe 2" height="2000" width="2667" msid="75866235" hostid="261"></div>It's perhaps in business and first class, however, where the biggest changes have been felt.When you're flying in an upper class, one of the things you're paying for is extra attention from flight attendants. Now, airlines are trying to minimize interaction, keeping physical contact to what is strictly necessary.Perks like fine dining, bowls of nibbles, and hot towels are off the menu, too. On <a href="https://www.insider.com/qatar-airways-introduces-full-body-protective-gear-cabin-crew-coronavirus-2020-5">Qatar Airways</a>, for example, business class meals are being served on a tray instead of a table set up, with a cutlery wrap offered to passengers rather than individual cutlery service.On American Airlines, first and business class meals are also being served on one tray instead of in courses, there's no longer a pre-departure beverage, and alcohol is ony available in first class, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-airlines-axes-most-food-and-drink-service-amid-coronavirus-2020-3">Business Insider's Graham Rapier reported</a>.<a href="https://www.aircanada.com/uk/en/aco/home/book/travel-news-and-updates/2020/service-offering-changes.html">Air Canada</a> has replaced its normal bar service simply with bottles of water, the usual business class cuisine has been replaced with a pre-packaged meal, and special dietary requests can no longer be accommodated.Meanwhile, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-deserted-empty-airports-world-coronavirus-air-travel-2020-2#meanwhile-cathay-pacific-has-announced-that-it-would-stop-offering-in-flight-hot-towels-pillows-blankets-magazines-and-duty-free-sales-30">Cathay Pacific announced</a> that it would stop offering in-flight hot towels, pillows, blankets, magazines, and duty-free sales.Virgin Atlantic and Qantas are among others offering similar streamlined services, providing just orange juice and water.<h2>If you care about perks, don't fly business during or after lockdown</h2>If the business class flight experience is as much about the complimentary Champagne as the leg room for you, some experts believe it would be a mistake to pay for a premium ticket any time soon."Right now, in-flight service perks for all classes have been removed or changed to reduce the chance of contamination, removing a lot of the draw of these upgraded fares," Jack Sheldon, founder of <a href="https://jacksflightclub.com/">Jack's Flight Club</a>, told Insider."We are also seeing fewer deals on business and premium classes," Sheldon said, adding that business and first class seats won't be as valuable for travelers unless they are after the leg room.Even if your main motivation for flying business or first class is the greater personal space, there's no shortage of space in economy right now."Where <keyword id="34984" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="airline">airline</keyword> loads are light, you may get a whole row to yourself, that's better (and more distanced) than flying up front," Gary Leff, founder of <a href="https://viewfromthewing.com/">View From The Wing</a>, told Insider.<div type="image" title="Emirates first class 4" height="933" width="1400" msid="75866239" hostid="261"></div>What's more, you don't get to appreciate the usual joy of being able to whizz through the airport's priority lanes at security and boarding, because either <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-flying-is-like-during-coronavirus-pandemic-airport-plane-photos-2020-4">there are no queues</a>, or lanes have been consolidated. "With airport security in the US currently screening no more than about 200,000 people a day, down over 90%, it doesn't take long to get through the airport," Leff said.However, Sheldon pointed out that "with the extra temperature checks and customs checking now added, we might actually be seeing longer wait times no matter your class."Leff believes that, especially for short-haul flights, it's a waste of money to fly business or first class the way things are at the moment."Right now there's not much benefit to sitting up front on a short flight," Leff said. "Where the extra space is minimal and the service on short flights is minimal, there isn't much incremental value."Long-haul flights, however, may be a different story.<h2>The privacy of a premium experience may prove more attractive than ever</h2>When leisure travel begins again, it's likely that the majority of people will return to flying somewhat tentatively, and many experts believe the added privacy of flying business or first class may in fact end up being a reassurance worth paying for."Those keen to keep a safe distance will like the security of the roomier classes," Sheldon said.Gilbert Ott, founder of <a href="https://www.godsavethepoints.com/">God Save the Points</a>, agrees."I think at the right price, many travelers will look for any opportunity to enjoy more space, and this could tie into a pre-existing trend airlines were exploring with unbundled business class, where all the fixings were no longer included," he told Insider.<div type="image" title="©NickyKelvin 18 IMG_0404 2" height="1666" width="2500" msid="75866244" hostid="261"></div>Nicky Kelvin, Director of Content at <a href="https://thepointsguy.co.uk/">The Points Guy UK</a>, also predicts that more people will want to pay for extra space once they start flying again."Privacy and distance is likely to be in the forefront of many passengers' minds when they start flying again," he told Insider."An empty middle seat simply won't cut it for many, especially when there might be a fellow passenger directly in front or behind you."<h2>Suites with sliding doors offer extra protection</h2>Over the past few years, many airlines have been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/british-airways-business-class-club-suite-review-private-cocoon-a350-2019-8">upgrading their business and first class offerings</a> to launch suites, some with <a href="https://www.insider.com/emirates-first-class-suites-review-photos-voted-best-in-world-2019-11">floor-to-ceiling sliding doors</a> for ultimate privacy. For those who can afford them, it's likely these will become more popular than ever."Even before the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> pandemic brought travel to a halt, many airlines were introducing new premium cabins that, often for the first time, included closing doors," Kelvin said."When travelers return to the skies they'll be more conscious than ever before about their personal space, and these airlines will be eagerly waiting to greet them with some of the most spacious and comfortable premium cabins imaginable."<a href="https://www.insider.com/emirates-first-class-suites-review-photos-voted-best-in-world-2019-11">Emirates</a>, Singapore, Etihad, and ANA [below] lead the way for ultimate segregation. All have first class suites with doors on certain aircraft. The Qatar Qsuite business class product is also an enclosed cabin and is set to become even more of a favorite for those wanting to socially distance."It's possible that people will fly less frequently but fly better, deciding to splash out on the flights they do take."For many, 'fewer' trips will be the way forward, in favor of attempting to fly in business or first class to create natural social distancing," Ott suggested.<h2>Frequent business class travelers will still want to fly business</h2>"I'd expect premium classes to remain popular with the travelers who have always found these perks attractive," Sheldon said."The extra leg room, lie-flat space, and guarantee of personal distancing will always be worth the extra cost for some." As Ott explained, business class travel often isn't even about the perks which have now disappeared."For business travelers, the experience was always about space to sleep or work while in transit, and rarely about the Champagne or the sodium heavy meals," he told Insider.<div type="image" title="Nicky Kelvin British Airways BA A380 First LHR ORD (74 of 102) (1)" height="1875" width="2500" msid="75866247" hostid="261"></div>Canceled holidays and trips due to lockdown have led many people to realize how much they appreciate travel, and Kelvin believes that they will simply be so happy to be flying again that they won't care about not having the usual premium perks."The desire to travel with increased privacy and distance from others could become the ultimate way to fly, even if the old trappings of first and business class travel do not come with the package," he said."After being stuck on the ground for so long, many travelers will be so happy to be flying safely again that Champagne and caviar will not be a priority."<h2>Both on the ground and in the sky, what will happen is up in the air</h2>While the majority of airport lounges are now closed, as <a href="https://paxex.aero/2020/03/airport-lounges-closing-coronavirus-covid19/">Paxex</a> reported, Kelvin believes that if they do reopen, they'll be extra appealing."Passengers are likely to want to be away from the crowds, so premium check-in areas and lounges (if they are open) will provide for an easier experience," he said.Kelvin also believes more people will want to take longer trips when they can fly again, so the additional baggage and carry-on allowances that most airlines grant premium passengers will be "incredibly helpful."Although no one knows what will happen to airlines as travel restrictions are lifted, Ott says the experience will "no doubt be very different."He predicts smart cabin crew uniforms will be replaced by PPE gear, and Sheldon thinks face masks on flights may be a permanent change, as well as pillows and blankets replaced by hygiene-related perks like free hand sanitizer or masks."When it comes to food and drink, it's hard to imagine when that will return to any level of normalcy," Ott added.<h2>The price needs to be right</h2>As airlines attempt to dig themselves out of a hole, Ott says the price of fares will be important."Ideas that prices are going up are foolish, because airlines need cheap fares as much as we do. It's why we saw <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/qatar-airways-offering-free-changes-may-be-too-soon-2020-5?_ga=2.59079469.1098233960.1589789570-2057136890.1556640142">Qatar Airways recently offer $1,600 round trip business class fares</a> from just about anywhere in the world to anywhere in the world," he said."Lots of seats to fill, lots of people who want them and now less pressure to deliver on service aspects. Business and first class travel may be a waste of money right now, but premium tickets are about to become more valuable than ever

While we are hurtling towards urbanization, heaps of waste are growing even faster, causing a serious concern for the society. Poorly managed waste has an enormous impact on health, <keyword id="6356826" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="environment">environment</keyword>, and the <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword> at large. It is a large source of methane, significantly increasing greenhouse gas emissions in the environment. Also, it can lead to contamination of water and air, resulting into detrimental impacts on human health. According to the <keyword id="6354424" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="World-Bank">World Bank</keyword>, world cities generate about 1.3 billion tonnes of solid waste annually and this is expected to increase to 2.2 billion tonnes by 2025. Food waste, specifically, has profound social and environmental implications, considering that about 795 million people in the world do not have enough to eat. In addition, rotten food generates methane which adds up to the GHG emissions in the environment. Of the one-third food produced globally for consumption every year, about 1.3 billion tonnes gets lost or wasted. As large corporates generate huge amounts of food waste, it is essential for them to ensure responsible <keyword id="3301591" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="food-waste-management">food waste management</keyword>. It is critical to manage food waste with scientific methods to minimize waste going to landfills and mitigate the related impacts on the environment and society. Some concerns exist at different levels to manage food waste effectively, including collection, storage, and treatment processes. As bins are critical for collecting segregated food waste, it’s essential to map the bin size according to the generation patterns, the location of the bin to encourage usage, and clearance of the bin on a scheduled basis. Additionally, storage of food waste is also critical for effective food waste management. As food waste is high on organic hydrocarbons &amp; moisture content, it forms best environment for microbial growth. Hence, a dedicated area where temperature below 5°C should be maintained to make best use of these properties and also eliminate the foul odor issue. The third major concern is the treatment. While there are enough options available, mapping the end use, space availability and labor requirement are essential for opting for the best treatment system. (Source: UNEP, World Food Organization) While there is enough awareness with respect to food security and its potential landfill gas generation, only very few companies have invested in treating their food waste on-site. However, there has been a wave to derive internal policies that mandates the change in consumption and food wastage. A prominent step has been to serve measured portion of food to employees by relating it to health benefits, influencing conscious consumption and reducing wastage. Segregation and composting are also holding an important position in many companies’ food waste management agendas. <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> is persistent in its efforts to ensure the reuse, recycling, and responsible disposal of waste to minimize the amount of waste going to landfills. At Infosys, there have been conscious measures that have shaped the handling and treatment of food waste. In 2012, at corporate level, Infosys adopted 100% segregation and on- site food waste treatment policy. Today, Infosys has standardized the color, size and visual communication materials for food waste collection at food courts resulting in 100% segregation. 
	 
	 
	The restriction of food serving limited to food courts has reduced the mixed waste fraction and super- efficient collection of food waste. Every campus has a dedicated food waste storage room wherein appropriate cooling temperature is maintained at 5degreeC. We have piloted and installed various technology for food waste treatment. We have installed technologies such as biogas plants and organic waste converters to treat our food waste on-site. Biogas plants installed at our Mysore, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Bhubaneshwar, Pune and Trivandrum campuses 
	convert our food waste into biogas, which is in turn used in the food court kitchens. 
	 
	 
	 
	 
	 
	We also have organic waste converters at our campuses in Trivandrum, Jaipur, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, and Bangalore, to convert food waste into rich manure that is further used in our campuses for landscaping. We have also employed vermicomposting in Mangalore and Pune to recycle small quantities of food waste into compost. 
	 
	 
	 
	Our total installed biogas capacity is 9.25 Tonnes per day (TPD) having a potential of generating about 500 Kgs of LPG equivalent daily, for further use. Another 3.5 TPD of composting plants generating 1 TPD of manure every day is in place. These initiatives are enabling us to treat 100% of our food waste in-house. 
	 
	In addition to this, employee engagement and awareness programs are conducted across campuses through eco clubs to sensitize employees on segregation and responsible disposal and treatment of waste. All common areas and pantries have visually appealing posters on food waste management to educate employees. Infosys is leading from the front in this area ad has set new benchmarks in the industry by piloting new technologies and ideas to ensure reduce, recycle and reuse of waste effectively. Infosys’ efforts in waste management are helping divert considerable amount of waste from landfills, leading to reduced cost of transportation, carbon emission mitigation, and also minimized environmental impacts like land degradation, air pollution, and groundwater contamination.

<keyword id="20018917" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Capital-expenditure" source="keywords">Capital expenditure</keyword> on the <keyword id="19914937" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Railways" source="keywords">Railways</keyword> has increased by 77 per cent over the past five years with significant investments in the construction of <keyword id="22505706" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-lines" source="keywords">new lines</keyword>, <keyword id="20375816" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gauge-conversion" source="keywords">gauge conversion</keyword> and doubling, the <keyword id="20613906" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Economic-Survey" source="keywords">Economic Survey</keyword> 2023-24 said on Monday. According to the survey tabled in Parliament by Finance Minister <keyword id="19916618" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nirmala-sitharaman" source="keywords">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword>, in the financial year 2019-2020, the capital expenditure was 1.48 lakh crore which was increased to ₹2.62 lakh crore in 2023-24. "<keyword id="19909154" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Railways" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Indian Railways" meta.hostid="346" meta.entityid="Indian Railways">Indian Railways</keyword>, with over 68,584 route km (as of March 31, 2024) and 12.54 lakh employees (as of April 1, 2024), is the fourth largest network in the world under single management," the survey said. Highlighting the initiatives taken by the Railway Ministry for the enhancement of operations and services, the survey mentioned Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project and Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs) with the progress made in these respective <keyword id="19900581" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="projects" source="keywords">projects</keyword>. According to the survey, Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, launched in August 2023 for development of stations on a continuous basis, involves preparation of master plans and its phased implementation to improve amenities, building improvements, multimodal integration, and sustainability. It said that 1,324 stations have been identified for upgradation so far. Talking about another initiative, Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project, the survey said that under this 508-km project, executed with cooperation from the government of Japan, land acquisition and civil conduct award have been completed. "Overall physical progress of 41.7 per cent has been achieved and financial expenditure of ₹59,291 crore was incurred until 31st March, 2024," the survey said. "Two DFCs are under implementation namely the eastern DFC with route length of 1,337 kilometre and the western DFC with route length of 1,506 kilometre," it added. It further stated that by the end of FY24, 96.1 per cent of the total DFC route length has been completed. Highlighting other major achievements, the survey said that the Railways achieved its highest-ever production for both locomotives and wagons in FY24. "Fifty one pairs of <keyword id="19922877" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vande-bharat" source="keywords">Vande Bharat</keyword> have been introduced until March 2024. The fast pace of infrastructure augmentation has been the result of a substantial increase in financial allocation along with close project monitoring and regular follow-up with stakeholders for expeditious land acquisition and clearances," the survey said. It added, "High-speed, long-distance Vande sleeper trainset coaches having features like quick acceleration, diffused lighting, automatic doors and global positioning system-based passenger information system are under development." According to the survey, the Railways is also planning to introduce Vande metro trainset coaches with features such as sealed wider gangways, centrally controlled automatic sliding doors, CCTVs for safety and surveillance, route map indicator, passenger information and infotainment system, fire detection system and aerosol-based fire suppression system. "The first lot is expected to be turned out in FY25," it said. "Railways has taken several initiatives for providing a clean environment in and around railway stations and trains, such as replacement of conventional toilets with bio-toilets on coaches leading to clean tracks, segregation of bio-degradable/non bio-degradable waste, solid waste management and discouraging use of single use plastic," the survey added.
