But it looks like it is all geared up this time, and the company has revised the price band to ₹313-315 per share. The grey market premium for its shares is hovering at ₹45-50 — suggesting an upside of 15% over the issue price band. This will be the first and the biggest IPO by an MSW collection and transportation company as there are no listed peers on the Indian stock exchanges as of now. India has a massive pile of e-waste of its own but it has also become the dumping ground for other developed countries.  The report asserts that as the use of technology grows, so do the threats concerned with e-waste. One of the biggest being the illegal movement of e-waste from developed countries to their developing counterparts. The complex web of transshipment ports makes detection of e-waste by authorities a considerable hurdle. Nearly 1.3 million tonnes of discarded electronic products make their way out of the European Union without documentation. Clearing up the legislation E-waste, or electronic waste, refers to all electronic equipment that’s been discarded by users with no intentions of reuse. This includes everything from smaller items like lamps and phones to larger appliances like televisions, refrigerators and washing machines. Countries like India, one of the most populous in the world, at least have legislation in place attempting to counteract the problem. In comparison, only a handful of nations in Africa have some sort of policy to deal with e-waste. But having a policy in place doesn’t necessarily imply the successful enforcement of guidelines or the existence of sufficient <keyword id="837232" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="E-WASTE-MANAGEMENT">e-waste management</keyword> systems. The ‘Global E-waste Monitor 2017’ <a href="https://www.itu.int/en/ITU-D/Climate-Change/Documents/GEM%202017/Global-E-waste%20Monitor%202017%20.pdf">reported</a> that informal recycling operations have been in place for a long in India but they have severe health impacts and cause environmental damage. Clarifying international guidelines for re-integrating discarded technology into new products is only one possible way to negate the negative externalities of e-waste. The market for refurbished phones in India is on the rise but shipment of used products is still to legislative uncertainty. The WEF propagates that creating a e-waste circular economy would keep materials and electronic components at their highest value at all times. This doesn’t only have to do with recycling e-waste but also designing products in way that supports reuse, durability and eventually safe recycling. 80% of e-waste isn’t documented and only 41 countries around the world have official statistics on e-waste in order to monitor the situation.

Developing countries like India bear the brunt of global e-waste

<ul><li>1.43 lakh Metric Tonnes (MT) of garbage is generated in Indian cities every day. </li><li>1.1 lakh MT of this is generally dumped in open <keyword id="1235979" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="landfills">landfills</keyword>. </li><li>This is completely unprocessed and pollutes the surrounding land, air and groundwater. </li></ul>About 1.43 lakh Metric Tonnes (MT) of <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/75-of-municipal-garbage-in-india-dumped-without-processing/articleshow/65190477.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">garbage </a> is generated in the Indian cities every day. However, only about 35,600 MT, which is a quarter of the total garbage generated, undergoes processing every day. The remaining 1.1 lakh MT is generally dumped in open landfills, which overflows and pollutes the surrounding land, air and groundwater. Out of the 35 states, only eight process more than 50% of the garbage from the cities, including <keyword id="66" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi">Delhi</keyword> (at 55%), and no state has been able to process all 100% of its waste until now. The state-wise data on the website of the Urban Affairs Ministry shows that some, like Arunachal Pradesh and Dadra &amp; Nagar Haveli, don't process municipal garbage at all. Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar and Jharkhand are stuck at less than 10%. Chhattisgarh tops the list with 74%, followed by Telangana (67%), Sikkim (66%) and Goa (62%).  On the plus side, 61,846, which is three-quarters of the 84,000 municipal wards in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>, have been able to achieve 100% door-to-door waste collection. The Maharashtra Municipal Ward generates the most garbage daily at 22,570 MT, followed by Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Gujarat and Karnataka. However, the lack of proper disposal facilities nullifies the success. According to the <keyword id="6357976" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Centre-for-Science-and-Environment">Centre for Science and Environment</keyword> (<keyword id="6367898" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="CSE">CSE</keyword>) that is based in Delhi, the cities are now running out of lands to dump their waste on. Therefore, they have now switched to dumping it in the ‘backyards’ of smaller towns, suburbs and villages. The CSE backs segregation at source, recycling and reusing against the centralised approach of landfills. A change in the behaviour of citizens and an approach of local <keyword id="6359012" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="waste-management">waste management</keyword> solutions are needed to make it to the ideal of ‘Clean India’, says CSE.

The result? "Overflowing garbage cans downtown and illegal dumping."America's largest city has been seized by the issue, too. Kathryn Garcia, the New York City mayoral candidate who <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-york-city-mayoral-primaries-live-results-vote-counts-2021-6">narrowly lost</a> to Eric Adams, left her role as city sanitation chief in 2020 in part over layoffs and cuts, according to <a href="https://www.ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/news/2020/09/08/city-sanitation-chief-kathryn-garcia-resigns">NY1</a>, which also reported that the city <a href="https://www.ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/news/2020/07/07/dsny-sanitation-budget-cuts-what-to-expect-">slashed $106 million</a> from the sanitation budget that year. "There will be a significant reduction in service and these were just really difficult choices," Garcia said at the time.Separately, Insider's Francis Agustin <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chattanooga-tennessee-suspending-recycling-pickup-services-2021-7">reported</a> in July that residents of Chattanooga, Tennessee, would see their recycling pickups temporarily halted as the city tried to staff up and hire more drivers. In both cases, one answer to address hiring woes emerged: Paying drivers more. In New Orleans, one of the firms contracted to pick up trash raised driver pay from $14 an hour to $17 an hour, according to NOLA.com. That led them to be able to hire seven more drivers off the bat (they wanted to hire about eight to 10 in total). Local news station WRCBtv <a href="https://www.wrcbtv.com/story/44441002/update-mayor-tim-kelly-reveals-pay-raise-to-cdl-drivers-to-fill-32-empty-slots">reported</a> that Mayor Tim Kelly will raise pay for drivers from $31,000 to $45,000, around a 43% pay increase. New Delhi, Feb 25 () The Centre on Tuesday proposed draft rules on battery waste management directing manufacturers and importers to ensure that used batteries are collected back against the new ones they sell and environment is not harmed during their transportation. In its draft notification, Battery Waste Management Rules 2020, the Ministry of Environment has given 60 days to public to make objection or suggestion to the rules after which the government will bring the notification into effect. There are four chapters in the notification which are divided into eight rules. The rules fix the responsibilities of manufacturer, importer, assembler and re-conditioner. "It shall be the responsibility of a manufacturer, importer, assembler and re- conditioner to ensure that the used batteries are collected back as per the schedule against new batteries sold excluding those sold to original equipment manufacturer and bulk consumer(s)," the ministry notification said. It shall be their responsibility to "ensure that used batteries collected back are of similar type and specifications as that of the new batteries sold, it said, adding that collection centres must set up by them either individually or jointly at various places for collection of used batteries from consumers or dealers. "They must ensure that used batteries collected are sent only to the registered recyclers. Ensure that necessary arrangements are made with dealers for safe transportation from collection centres to the premises of registered recyclers. Ensure that no damage to the environment occurs during transportation of used batteries and no acid should be drained in case of used lead acid batteries," the rules said. The notification also says the manufacturers and others responsible must create public awareness through advertisements, publications, posters or by other means with regard to hazards of Lead, Cadmium and Mercury; obligation of consumers to return their used batteries only to the dealers or deliver at collection centres and instructions for handling and disposal of the equipment after its use. As per the rules, 'battery' or 'accumulator' means any source of electrical energy generated by direct conversion of chemical energy and includes disposable primary batteries or rechargeable secondary ones. The survey-‘Not in my backyard’-, which is based on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=waste+management&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">solid waste management</a> practises in towns in India, placed Delhi at the "bottom of the heap".

"This book started as a survey, we wanted to simply know which city is India's cleanest. We knew that once we found out which is the cleanest, we would also find out what makes it so. This would give us the answers for future policy," said CSE Director General Sunita Narain. 
 
Noting that the last survey to understand quantity and composition of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=garbage&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">garbage</a> was done over a decade ago, CSE said that the methodology used to calculate waste generated is to simply extrapolate an assumed quantity estimate with the population. 
 
Referring to the Department of Economic Affairs position paper on solid waste management of 2009, CSE said that urban India was already producing some 80,000 MT of waste a day. 
 
It projected that by 2047, India would be producing 260 million tonnes of waste annually needing over 1,400 sq km of landfills which is an area equal to Hyderabad, Mumbai and Chennai put together, CSE said referring to the paper. 
 
According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) estimates, over 90 per cent of Indian cities with a functional collection system dispose of their waste in landfills, CSE said.
