Despite mixed global cues, <keyword id="90570" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sgx-nifty" source="Orion">SGX Nifty</keyword>, an early indicator of how the markets may perform, was up 0.22%, or 41 points this morning. The 30-stock Sensex opened 68 points higher at 61,406, while the 50-stock Nifty50 opened 19 points higher at 18,288. Both the indices closed in the red for the second consecutive week on Friday – while Sensex closed 1.2% down in the previous week, Nifty50 closed 0.47% lower. "The synchronised rate hikes by the leading central banks of the world and their hawkish tone impacted market sentiments last week with <keyword id="6354813" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nifty" source="Orion">Nifty</keyword> closing below the near-term support of 18400. While this risk-off can continue to impact the market, there are positive triggers too, like steadily declining inflation in the U.S. and the hope that the Fed will respond to this with a pause in rate hikes in early 2023. Therefore, market trends are likely to oscillate like the World Cup finals,” said V K Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Financial Services. Sensex and Nifty50’s movement in the past two weeks reflected those of the US markets, which also closed in the red for the second consecutive week. The S&amp;P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average and Nasdaq declined between 0.85-1.11% on Friday as US Fed’s hawkish commentary spooked investors. <ul><li>It has been a dull year for initial public offerings (IPOs) this year because of several concerns including the Russia-Ukraine war, rising inflation, higher interest rates and a strong US dollar.</li><li>However, the last few months of 2022 saw a pick up in IPOs.</li><li>The number of IPOs launched and the funds raised through them so far in 2022 have halved from last year.</li><li>Analysts believe the <keyword id="402627" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ipo-market" source="Orion">IPO market</keyword> could witness recovery in the coming months thanks to a strong pipeline and the recent successes of IPOs.</li><li>Popular garments and furnishings retailer Fabindia, Sachin Bansal-founded Navi Technologies and Biba Fashion are among companies that may list next year.</li><li>Currently, there are 61 companies looking to collectively raise ₹92,403 crore via public listing.</li></ul>The primary markets have turned optimistic since September, compensating for a lull in initial public offerings (IPOs) for a greater part of this year. Most of the 15 companies that listed on the bourses in the last quarter of 2022 have rewarded investors. Several concerns – the Russia-Ukraine war, rising inflation, higher interest rates and a strong dollar – led to a halving in the number of IPOs launched and the funds raised through them so far in 2022 compared to last year. So far this year, ₹55,101 crore has been raised through 32 IPOs (as of December 6), down from ₹1.18 lakh crore raised through 64 IPOs in 2021, shows data from Prime Database. In fact, nearly 40% of the amount raised this year has been through one IPO – that of insurance behemoth Life Insurance Corporation (LIC), which garnered over ₹21,000 crore from the public. “Between last year and this year there has been a slowdown in the IPO market. The difference is even more noticeable if you remove LIC, which contributed to a lion’s share of the amount this year. Primary market always follows the secondary market, albeit with a lag. Last year, markets were extremely bullish with a lot of liquidity floating around, which resulted in a huge number of IPOs,” Pranav Haldea, managing director of Prime Database told Business Insider India. The last few months, however, have seen an increase in the number of companies taking the IPO route. Issuances seen across sectors, except new-age tech A report by EY on IPO trends highlights that the end of Q3 (July-September) has seen an uptick in IPOs, after a slowdown post Q2. Technology, banking, capital markets, media and entertainment were the most active sectors in the IPO market in Q3, says the report “Issuances are happening across sectors, except for new-age tech companies. Now, companies have also been asked for additional disclosures, so it may be a while till we see a new-age tech company launch its IPO,” added Haldea. New-age tech companies like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/new-age-tech-companies-rake-in-business-but-are-still-making-losses/articleshow/95837559.cms">Zomato, Paytm and Nykaa that listed last year and Delhivery, which listed this year</a>, have sharply corrected, making investors wary. Moreso, the stock of LIC, which was India’s largest IPO, too corrected since listing in May this year. Companies that have not yet launched their IPO even after SEBI approval are probably waiting for better valuations and perhaps do not have any fresh capital requirement or pressure from PE/VC investors to exit,” added Haldea. <ul class="summary-list"><li>As colleges prepare to reopen, one aspect of campus life is being reconfigured: <keyword id="1822090" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="dining-halls">dining halls</keyword>.</li><li>Dining halls, long a place to gather and feast upon all-you-can-eat options, are shifting to takeout or reservation services.</li><li>Some schools are turning to platforms like OpenTable and Grubhub to help manage takeout and dining hall capacity.</li><li>Others are turning to robots.</li></ul>For <keyword id="6360288" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="College">college</keyword> students, the days of filling your plate from all-you-can-eat buffets and crowding around a dining hall table are gone — or at least paused.Instead, students returning to campus this year may find unlimited soft-serve machines and impromptu dinner catch-ups replaced with reservations ahead of time, prepackaged or preordered meals, and ordering kiosks.Restaurant-reservation software company OpenTable is one vendor that's seen increased demand, according to COO Andrea Johnston. Schools like Cornell University and University of Wisconsin-Madison have already signed on to use the service to handle dining hall capacity.<div type="image" title="IMG_7661" height="1817" width="1124" msid="77317345" hostid="261"></div>"We actually received a lot of inbound from a lot of different places, but notably from colleges," Johnston said. "They were trying to think through this."Students at schools using the software can either go through the app or their college's website to make a reservation at a dining hall; they'll also be able to join a virtual waitlist if the dining hall is all booked up. Johnston also said that colleges will set aside some tables for walk-ins. But, as of right now, the software doesn't have a group dining function — unlike the usual OpenTable functionality, where restaurant-goers can book for a group.So if you wanted to dine with a friend, Johnston said, you would have to book a reservation at the same time. How close you can get depends on how the college is handling social distancing measures.Another service is cutting out the in-person dining altogether. Grubhub, a food ordering and delivery service, already had an on-campus service pre-pandemic. But schools like <a href="https://news.iu.edu/stories/2020/07/iub/inside/14-campus-dining-changes-for-students-staff-faculty-for-coronavirus-safety.html">Indiana University Bloomington</a> (IU) will now rely more heavily on its takeout functionality. He said there's one main question that the platform is tackling: "How do we alleviate contact?"<h2>Robots may also provide relief for dining workers</h2>And some students may have robots deliver food to them, as Jane Black reports for The <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/13/dining/college-food-coronavirus.html">New York Times</a>. Students at George Mason University already had a fleet of 25 robots that would deliver food from campus eateries to them. Now, as campus prepares to reopen, 43 robots are ready to bring food straight to students.And, as Black reports, robots will also be deployed in the kitchens of schools like the University of Chicago and MIT — which could help reduce the workload on employees.Natasha Warikoo, a professor of sociology at Tufts University and the author of "<a href="http://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/D/bo24550619.html">The Diversity Bargain: And Other Dilemmas of Race, Admissions, and Meritocracy at Elite Universities</a>," previously told Business Insider that campus workers — like those who work in dining halls — are the most vulnerable population on campuses. Many of them also come from local communities, which can put those communities at risk.<h2>Dining halls are yet another aspect of college social life contending with a virus that spreads easily in crowded indoor spaces</h2>Students at Harvard College won't even go to dining halls once they arrive on campus.Instead, <a href="https://dining.harvard.edu/campus-dining/undergraduate-dining/covid-operating-procedures">Harvard is taking a different approach</a>: for the first couple of weeks that students are on campus, they'll receive prepackaged meals that are "chilled for take-away and reheating later;" every student will receive a "micro fridge."Once the school has reached a "manageable rate of community transmission" dining services will begin to serve hot food — but it has said that dining rooms may not reopen.
