Club</a>, people on social media accused Schumer&#xa0;<span>of "cultural appropriation and of being disrespectful to the racial politics at the heart of the song ... 'Formation' is about Beyoncé's experiences as a black woman and the experiences of black women in general."</span></p><p><span>In response to the controversy, Schumer said she was inspired and empowered by "Formation" and didn't mean to diminish any of the song's meaning.</span></p><p><span>"<span>I love how in the lyrics of 'Formation' Beyoncé is telling us to get in formation," Schumer wrote in a new essay on <a href="https://medium.com/@amyschumer/information-about-my-formation-b416d2adfc71#.n8lqo9ajy" target="_blank">Medium</a>. "And also I like to think she is telling us ladies to get information. I did not mean to detract any of the meaning from the video. I am of course horrified and sickened by the events that are addressed throughout that video and didn't see this as minimizing that and still don't."</span></span></p><p><span><span>She went on to say of the video, "<span>It was NEVER a parody. It was just us women celebrating each other. The video Beyoncé made was so moving and I wouldn't ever make fun of that. There is absolutely no way to. I make fun of myself a few times in the video as I do in everything I am a part of. Amy Schumer defends her Beyonce 'Formation' video that caused outrage: 'It was NEVER a parody'

<ul class="summary-list"><li>"Mysticons'" creator told Insider he was forced to scrap a kiss between two female characters.</li><li>Experts say it's due to studios and networks living "in fear" of conservative pushback over inclusion.</li><li>Despite industry fears and red tape, change is happening thanks to fans and "brave creators." </li></ul><p>"Mysticons" creator Sean Jara didn't set out to tell a story about an archer and pirate who fell in love. </p><p>But when the show's studio, Nelvana, pivoted the Nickelodeon series to center four teenage girls who become heroes known as Mysticons, instead of boys, Jara swapped his nearly all-male team for more women and <keyword id="729067" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="LGBTQ">LGBTQ</keyword> writers to ensure the story onscreen was more accurately told.</p><p>Those queer writers were responsible for building out an arc between lesbian characters Zarya Moonwolf and Kitty Boon, whom fans loved so much they even gave them a ship name - MoonBoon. </p><p>By the second season, the two were a burgeoning couple with a planned episodic kiss. </p><p>The "Mysticons" showrunner then sent the script, as is customary, to the show's studios, Nelvana and YTV, the network Nickelodeon, and his producing partners.</p><p>"We sent in the first draft and thought, 'How are they going to react?'" Jara told Insider. "And they weren't fighting it. We got no notes on it."</p><p>But the moment never aired. </p><p>Although Nickelodeon supported the creative decision, Jara noted, another partner expressed concerns about the storyline and its age-appropriateness for the show's young demographic. So the creative team was forced to scrap it.</p><p>Jara said he tried to convince the concerned partner "but there was no convincing. And, as a result, we were told we have to take the kiss out."</p><div type="image" title="Mysticons" height="606" width="1000" msid="83557099" hostid="261"></div>"We almost had to unravel the whole love story, but I fought for that like, 'Listen, it's too late.'"<p>"Mysticons" studio Nelvana told Insider in a statement that they "regrettably" confirm "that this decision was made during production" of season two.</p><p>"We acknowledge that broadcast television has long been confined by conservative parameters for storytellers and it is our responsibility, as producers and broadcasters, to ensure we foster an inclusive ecosystem for creative storytelling with diversity and inclusion at the forefront," the statement continued. </p><p>"Nelvana's commitment to ensure those parameters remain in the past, and create a more diverse and inclusive future has been put into action by implementing a DEI initiative to increase racial diversity in the studio and industry, with diversity mandates in place for casting, writing and music, not only with BIPOC <keyword id="581888" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="representation">representation</keyword>, but also the 2SLGBTQ+ communities," it concluded.</p><p>Insider also reached out to reps for Nickelodeon. </p><p>For decades, a web of red tape - from network's Standards and Practices departments to parental guidelines and conservative-led campaigns - have stymied efforts to make kids animation more inclusive.</p><p>And while many network and studio executives blame this red tape on why their shows aren't more inclusive, those in the industry - from showrunners to storyboard artists - told Insider that the decision-makers at the top actually have the power to make the change.</p><div type="image" title="family kids watching tv movie at home streaming" height="1867" width="2800" msid="83557102" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>Animation's inclusion push has been complicated by <keyword id="6355065" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="TV">TV</keyword> Parental Guidelines and the industry's self-regulation</strong><strong><br /></strong></h2><p>Show creators, directors, and writers in kids animation told Insider they often felt pressure from studios or networks to be less overt with LGBTQ characters or avoid depicting elements of LGBTQ culture altogether. </p><p>The TV Parental Guidelines ratings system is partly how this pressure has been exerted, as a means of controlling or sometimes even censoring content in the US and abroad. </p><iframe title="LGBTQ-inclusive animated kids' shows by content ratingting" id="datawrapper-chart-7QTG7" src="https://datawrapper.dwcdn.net/7QTG7/1/" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" style="width: 0; min-width: 100% ; border: none;" height="369"></iframe><p>A means for networks to flag parents about the maturity of a show's content, TV ratings are voluntary, assigned by the networks themselves, have no guidelines on LGBTQ representation, and offer no legal penalties, with only the potential for a reassigned rating in the face of complaints. </p><p>Still, studios and networks independently interpret the ratings guidelines (alongside FCC's broad definitions on <a href="https://www.fcc.gov/general/obscenity-indecency-profanity-tv-ratings-channel-blocking">obscenity, indecency, and profanity</a>) through their own Standards and Practices departments which often results in series showcasing varying degrees and types of inclusion while targeting the same age groups.</p><iframe title="Explicit vs. implicit representation by show rating" id="datawrapper-chart-04jhF" src="https://datawrapper.dwcdn.net/04jhF/2/" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" style="width: 0; min-width: 100% ; border: none;" height="550"></iframe><p>Former Cartoon Network executive Katie Krentz told Insider that Standards and Practices departments at larger networks keep wide-ranging content guidelines in "a huge binder." They regulate everything from characters' technology use to their diet - whether they are seen eating processed foods versus a "well-balanced meal." </p><p>At times, these departments alongside studio executives also determine if LGBTQ-specific words, such as "Pride" or "gay," can be said by a character or depicted onscreen. </p><p>A storyboard artist and writer, who has not been named over a fear of retaliation, told Insider that while working on a Cartoon Network series in the mid-2010s, it was a known restriction that the creative team couldn't have any character refer to same-gender parents featured in the show as "moms." Instead, writers were forced to refer to them singularly, with characters simply saying "mom." </p><p>Insider reached out to Cartoon Network, but didn't immediately hear back.</p><p>Kevin Sullivan, a story editor for "The Loud House," which centers Lincoln Loud, the only boy in a family of 11 children, told Insider that he wasn't barred from using the word "lesbian" in dialogue when writing a storyline for the third-oldest Loud sibling, Luna, and her bandmate crush Sam. </p><div type="image" title="The Loud House" height="683" width="1024" msid="83557104" hostid="261"></div><p>"We just can't say those words because of how young our audience can skew. It's still kind of the forbidden zone," he said. "But the joy of the episode, that I was proud of, was that it wasn't a 'coming out' episode. The entire family accepted her, there was no having to come out."</p><p>That lack of a more explicit identification resulted in some fans reading Luna as bisexual following the events of an earlier episode when she appeared to have a crush on a boy. </p><p>Sullivan clarified to Insider in a separate interview that it wasn't due to pressure from Nickelodeon, adding that saying a word like lesbian in dialogue "never came up." </p><p>"I don't know if I would push it," he added. "We never challenged that and I'm actually glad we didn't because she becomes representative of so many more young people struggling with their identity."</p><p>Lisa Diamond, professor of psychology and gender studies at the University of Utah, told Insider that young viewers generally aren't assigning sexuality labels to themselves before 12 anyways, but that they also aren't associating those labels with "what people do to one another." </p><p>Instead, their understanding of LGBTQ identity is "couple-centric," with little recognition of visual or verbal innuendos and a better understanding of the romantic symbolism they see in marketing. </p><p>"Kids are much more oriented around what's part of their daily life, and what's a part of their daily life is people in relationships and family forms," Diamond said. </p><p>But more explicit inclusion of LGBTQ identities wasn't - and isn't - impossible. </p><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/7wkHRvOfkE0" frameborder="0"></iframe><p>"Role Reversal," a 2010 episode of the TV-G-rated Canadian series "6Teen," featured a guest character asking a co-worker if she was "trying to find out" if she was "gay." </p><p>Jennifer Pertsch, who co-created "6Teen," which follows six 16-year-olds as they navigate their first part-time jobs at the mall, told Insider that when it came to their representation, they did "what we could get away with." </p><p>For shows on cable and broadcast networks, approval of such decisions can involve up to eight levels of bureaucracy, with gatekeepers spanning showrunners, S&amp;P executives, IP owners, and studio presidents.</p><p>Streaming companies that don't have Standards and Practices departments, however, help reveal how such varying degrees of inclusivity is possible. </p><p>Krentz said because there's a "gray area" of who's in charge of making decisions on LGBTQ representation amid the animated streaming boom, it often results in a single person's "belief system and background" being the deciding factor.</p><p>"It's putting that pressure on the creative executive to make the decision of what should or should not stay in," she added.</p><div type="image" title="Gargoyles" height="1035" width="1845" msid="83557106" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>Conservative parent groups created a historical fear for TV studios, but it's outdated, experts say</strong></h2><p>While Standards and Practices departments can have significant sway, broadcasters and streamers alike have faced conservative pushback. </p><p>Former Disney executive David Levine, who oversaw kids programming internationally for 16 years, told Insider that "a lot of conservative opinion" was driving what was depicted on screen at networks such as Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and Disney Channel, especially with the regional and religious restrictions that come with international distribution.  </p><p>"You had a conservatism there that was pretty much in sync with the overall country," Levine said. "You were never going to see [LGBTQ inclusion]. Even still to this day, I have those conversations." </p><p>"Gargoyles'' creator Greg Weisman said he would "never" be allowed "to be explicit" in episodes for his syndicated "Disney Afternoon" series about the nocturnal creatures, which aired from 1994 to 1997, due to fear of backlash.</p><p>"If they got two letters, they would freak out and talk about [how] we've got to re-edit the show," Weisman said of  working during that time. "They were scared of parental response." </p><p>Instead of shows focusing only on what is educationally valuable and developmentally appropriate for children, based on science, networks prioritized parent's reactions - allowing those fears to determine what's left on the cutting room floor.</p><p>Although this fear of outrage from conservatives and parents has historically overshadowed efforts for LGBTQ inclusion, it's grip on the industry is fading, pointing to a major shift in whose voices are centered now.</p><div type="image" title="Doc McStuffins" height="568" width="1024" msid="83557109" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>Social media is among several things helping TV studios shift away from prioritizing dissenting voices</strong></h2><p>Despite industry fears and discriminatory red tape, change is happening thanks to an evolving society, fans, social media, and streamers. </p><p>GLAAD director of <keyword id="4578" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="entertainment">entertainment</keyword> media Jeremy Blacklow told Insider that the 2017 "Doc McStuffins" episode "The Emergency Plan," which featured Wanda Sykes and Portia de Rossi voicing two moms, was a turning point for executives who have "lived in fear" of conservative groups threatening boycotts. </p><p>"After that moment, I think a lot of the power was taken away," from organizations such as One Million Moms and The Family Research Council, he said, who have helped drive these creative decisions for decades.</p><p>The episode signaled a major win for both Disney and preschool series, underscoring that LGBTQ characters could appear in shows aimed at little viewers without major crisis or retaliation.</p><p>Culture shifts in kids and parents have helped executives realize "enough people can handle" inclusion, Polly Conway, TV editor for Common Sense Media - a source of entertainment recommendations based on child development guidelines - said.  </p><p>"Kids in this generation ... are pretty much seeing the world in a different way. They don't care if a character is gay or they don't see it as a negative," Conway told Insider. "And the younger the parents get, the more relaxed they are about this because the world is changing."</p><iframe title="How much parents and kids agree on the minimum age required to watch LGBTQ-inclusive shows" id="datawrapper-chart-Zkh6V" src="https://datawrapper.dwcdn.net/Zkh6V/1/" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" style="width: 0; min-width: 100% ; border: none;" height="500"></iframe><p>An analysis of available data from Common Sense Media, which rates TV shows, movies, and books for kids based on age appropriateness, found that for over half of the eligible series in <a href="https://www.insider.com/lgbtq-cartoon-characters-kids-database-2021-06?page=explore-database">Insider's database</a>, parents rated shows featuring LGBTQ-inclusive content appropriate for kids aged 7 years old or below.</p><p>In fact, parents weren't only mostly aligned with their children on how old they should be to watch these shows,  but more frequently suggested lower age minimums when it came to viewing LGBTQ-inclusive shows than kids themselves.</p><p>Krentz said another part of this shift may be due to conventions, where she saw Comic-Con rooms fill up for "Steven Universe," a show targeted to young boys, with "20-, 30- and 40- somethings." That gave creators and executives immediate feedback on who is watching, who will buy merchandise, and, ultimately, what is "good" representation.  </p><p>Kristi Reed, a voice and casting director for several children's animated projects, credits social media response, positive media coverage, and media honors for inclusive children's programming from organizations like GLAAD, as they "allow you to have a true sounding board."</p><p>"When the collective audience responds back and you hear a more positive number over the negative number, you know with certainty that more people want it than the people who don't," Reed added.</p><p>Where networks and studios were once reluctant of LGBTQ inclusion, a new precedent has been set, Levine said, that sees inclusion as more of a win than a loss thanks to "brave creators and … brave executives that try to push the envelope." </p><p><em>Kalai Chik contributed to the reporting for this story. </em></p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>On Saturday, news broke suggesting that James Corden was "in line" to replace <keyword id="54602" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ellen-DeGeneres">Ellen DeGeneres</keyword> should her daytime talk show go off the air.</li><li>The news about Corden led to backlash from people accusing him of problematic behavior, similar to the criticism DeGeneres has faced in recent months.</li><li>Regardless of the accusations against Corden, it'd be uninspired to make him — a straight white man — DeGeneres' replacement.</li><li>Talk shows right now are hosted primarily by men, which means a female host is essential for bringing new perspectives to audiences.</li><li>"The Ellen DeGeneres Show" was groundbreaking when it premiered, and, should it go off the air, producers would do well to appoint a queer woman of color as her successor.</li></ul><p>On Saturday, the British newspaper The Sun <a href="https://www.insider.com/james-corden-ellen-degeneres-show-host-replacement-reactions-2020-8">reported that James Corden was thought to be "in line" to replace Ellen DeGeneres should she quit her namesake show</a>.</p><p>It was the latest news in a <a href="https://www.insider.com/ellen-degeneres-mean-backlash-nikkietutorials-timeline-2020-4">maelstrom of bad press</a> for DeGeneres that began when the Dutch beauty YouTuber Nikkie de Jager said in February that the host — long known for <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/08/05/ellen-degeneres-turned-kindness-into-brand-now-brand-may-bring-her-down/">telling her audience to "be kind"</a> — had acted <a href="https://www.insider.com/nikkietutorials-ellen-degeneres-dutch-tv-interview-rude-2020-3">"cold and distant" during de Jager's appearance</a> on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."</p><p>Since then, <a href="https://www.insider.com/ellen-degeneres-mean-backlash-nikkietutorials-timeline-2020-4">crew members, celebrities, and media personalities have publicly spoken out</a> about DeGeneres' character and accused her of problematic behavior. Corden himself has also faced criticism following the news that he might be DeGeneres' successor, leading to backlash on Twitter from people accusing the "Late Late Show" host of trying to lower young writers' salaries or saying he acted in a similarly entitled way as DeGeneres has been accused of.</p><p>But regardless of your feelings about Corden or DeGeneres, the news that Corden could replace the longtime host points to a larger, more disturbing trend of talented women (especially queer women and women of color) consistently being sidestepped to pave the way for male comedians.</p><h2>DeGeneres' daytime talk show was once considered progressive and historic</h2><p>When it first premiered in 2003, DeGeneres' "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" was a huge move for network television.</p><p>As an out lesbian, DeGeneres was one of the few queer women (aside from Rosie O'Donnell) to host an entire talk show, and she quickly found an audience with people who loved her dancing, pranks, and goofy sense of humor.</p><p>But DeGeneres' hosting gig came after a turbulent few years for her.</p><p>In 1997, while starring on the ABC sitcom "Ellen," DeGeneres came out as lesbian <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRUjNOpT5-A">during an interview with Oprah Winfrey</a>. She followed up the interview with a <a href="https://time.com/4728994/ellen-degeneres-1997-coming-out-cover/">groundbreaking Time magazine cover (featuring DeGeneres with the words "Yep, I'm Gay")</a>, and even addressed her sexuality in an episode of her sitcom.</p><p>Titled "The Puppy Episode," the plot focused on DeGeneres' character Ellen Morgan as she <a href="https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/coming-out-episode-of-ellen">confided in her therapist (played by Winfrey) that she's gay</a>. Numerous other <keyword id="6412373" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="celebrities">celebrities</keyword>, including Laura Dern, Demi Moore, and Billy Bob Thornton, also had small roles in the episode, which was <a href="https://www.biography.com/news/ellen-degeneres-sitcom-coming-out-episode">reportedly viewed over by over 40 million people</a>.</p><p><div type="image" title="ellen degeneres the puppy episode" height="1899" width="2532" msid="77395686" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Unfortunately for DeGeneres and the show, "The Puppy Episode" <a href="https://www.biography.com/news/ellen-degeneres-sitcom-coming-out-episode">garnered a significant amount of backlash from conservative groups, and the sitcom was eventually canceled in 1998</a>. Increased focus <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120714055855/http://www.wmagazine.com/celebrities/2007/03/ellen_degeneres">was also paid to DeGeneres' relationship</a> with the actress Anne Heche.</p><p>A 2007 <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120714055855/http://www.wmagazine.com/celebrities/2007/03/ellen_degeneres">profile of DeGeneres in W Magazine</a> said the backlash and media attention "left her stunned, angry, unable to find work for three years, and mired in depression."</p><p>DeGeneres was able to make a comeback in Hollywood, voicing the character of Dory in 2003's "Finding Nemo" and eventually becoming the host of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," which has won numerous Daytime Emmys throughout its run.</p><p>Recent allegations surrounding DeGeneres and her show have now cast doubt on the host's cheery public persona — but to ignore the groundbreaking nature of her work, as well as the optics of having an out comedian host a daytime talk show, would be doing a massive disservice to DeGeneres and her career.</p><h2>Women, especially queer women and women of color, are still vastly underrepresented both in front of and behind the camera</h2><p>A <a href="https://www.wga.org/uploadedfiles/the-guild/inclusion-and-equity/wgaw_inclusion_report_20.pdf">recent report by the Writer's Guild of America</a> found that in the 2019-2020 television season, only 44% of <keyword id="6355065" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="TV">TV</keyword> writers were women and only 19% of writers were women of color. And while networks like ABC, NBC, and CBS <a href="https://www.wga.org/uploadedfiles/the-guild/inclusion-and-equity/wgaw_inclusion_report_20.pdf">have a decently high percentage of female writers</a>, there are still few women hosting late-night shows.</p><p><div type="image" title="Lilly Singh" height="1333" width="1777" msid="77395689" hostid="261"></div></p><p>In fact, NBC's Lilly Singh is the only woman hosting a nightly network talk show. Singh's show, "A Little Late With Lilly," premiered in September, making her the first queer South Asian late-night host.</p><p>Samantha Bee is the only other woman hosting a late-night program, though her show, "Full Frontal," airs once a week.</p><p>That's not to say there haven't been female hosts previously. In the past, <a href="https://www.insider.com/lilly-singh-women-on-late-night-tv-2019-9">comedians like Wanda Sykes, Joan Rivers, Robin Thede, and Chelsea Handler have all hosted nightly talk shows</a>, with varying levels of success.</p><p>But white men still dominate talk shows, especially those on late night. An ill-conceived <a href="https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2015/09/late-night-tv-colbert-fallon-kimmel?mbid=social_twitter#12">feature by Vanity Fair in 2015</a> inadvertently highlighted <a href="https://www.vox.com/2015/9/15/9331223/colbert-diversity-late-night">the extreme white maleness of late-night TV show hosts</a>.</p><p>Five years later, not much has changed. Queer women and women of color deserve a seat at the table and to have their voices heard both in front of and behind the camera.</p><p>DeGeneres' talk show was once considered progressive and historic, but it shouldn't be considered that radical anymore to have a woman of color or a queer woman hosting a TV show. If Ellen DeGeneres leaves her show, Hollywood shouldn't replace her with a white man

I am truly sorry for making a bad joke about her <keyword id="6358883" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="politics">politics</keyword> and her looks. I should have known better. Forgive me-my joke was in bad taste."</span></p><p>But by Wednesday morning, after ABC had pulled the plug on her show, Barr's <a href="https://twitter.com/therealroseanne" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Twitter</a> was littered with retweets from fans, far-right Twitter pages, and conservative pundits defending her after the remark. Barr herself <a href="https://twitter.com/therealroseanne/status/1001675404468457472" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tweeted</a> "<span>losing my show is 0 compared 2 being labelled a racist over one tweet-that I regret even more" - showing a level of misunderstanding of why her tweet about a black woman was deemed racist in the first place.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>Barr retweeted the following tweets defending her remarks:</span></p><p>She replied to television and radio host David Pakman and called him a "bully," and defended her claim that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/roseanne-barr-blames-ambien-for-racist-tweet-cancelled-show-2018-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ambien caused her racist tweet</a>.</p><p>She also referred to several people as "bigots" for calling her out.</p><p>She responded to co-star Sara Gilbert's tweet that Barr's racist remark was "abhorrent."</p><p>But then said that she understood Gilbert's position, and was just "shocked."</p><p>She also called out Wanda Sykes for quitting the show before ABC canceled it, and co-star Michael Fishman, who she said threw her under the bus.</p><p>Barr tweeted a defense of Trump, though, saying she "feels bad" for him in response to a tweet that called Gilbert "ungrateful" and "disloyal."</p><p>Barr also retweeted a claim by Fox Business anchor Trish Regan that ABC was "looking for a reason to cancel" the show because they "didn't like the fact that her conservative defense of certain things was so popular."&#xa0;</p><p>ABC executives have said that the "Roseanne" revival was actually <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/roseanne-reboot-part-of-abcs-effort-to-attract-trump-supporters-2018-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a direct result of President Trump's election</a>, and part of the network's strategy to attract conservatives. And while ratings slightly decreased since the reboot's premiere in March, it was still the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/most-popular-tv-shows-of-the-year-nielsen-ratings-2018-5#1-roseanne-abc-232-million-average-viewers-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">most popular scripted show of the year</a>. For ABC to cancel it means Barr's comments finally crossed a line.&#xa0;</p><p>Barr also seemed to be deflecting attention from her own remarks with a series of retweets that called out other personalities.</p><p>Barr got into politics during her tweet storm as well, such as the controversy surrounding photos of locked-up immigrant children.</p><p>Former Obama staffer Jon Favreau <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/migrant-children-in-cages-2014-photos-explained-2018-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">accidentally attributed photos of the children to Trump's administration</a>, but the photos were actually from 2014. The comedy follows four senators who must live in a house together while navigating the murky world of politics. So how did it do? AllThingsD </span><a href="http://allthingsd.com/20131119/the-ratings-are-in-for-alpha-house-amazons-first-made-for-the-web-tv-show/">reported</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> that it was Amazon's </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"number one most-watched show". Amazon never revealed the ratings so should you watch the show? Check out these reviews.</span></p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>Not every element is equally successful -- jokes about Twitter and YouTube should probably not be written (or spoken) by anyone over the age of 30, although it's funny when Goodman substitutes "virile" for "viral" -- and there is something a little old-fashioned, too, about Malloy's character's apparent self-delusion (a married Mormon, he asserts his straightness, but he knows a Von Furstenberg from a handsaw) and Consuelo's Latin lover.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>But it's an accomplished piece of work. And it gains heft from a number of impressive cameos, the first of which features </span><a href="http://www.latimes.com/topic/entertainment/movies/bill-murray-PECLB004143.topic" title="Bill Murray" class="taxInlineTagLink">Bill Murray</a><span>, as the senators' soon-to-be-former roommate, cursing a blue streak, shaving, brushing his teeth and combing his hair -- simultaneously -- as agents of the Department of Justice arrive to cart him off to prison. (Soon Goodman will be wearing his grease-stained tie to work.) Cynthia Nixon appears as an across-the-aisle colleague, Wanda Sykes as an across-the-aisle next-door neighbor, and </span><a href="http://www.latimes.com/topic/entertainment/television/stephen-colbert-PECLB005418.topic" title="Stephen Colbert" class="taxInlineTagLink">Stephen Colbert</a><span>, as Stephen Colbert, wrestles.</span></p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>When all four sign up for a Congressional fact-finding mission to Afghanistan, political survival, not public service, is the order of the day.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">That's hardly a fresh observation about Washington, but Mr. Trudeau has a feel for not just political hypocrisy but also character, and this cast manages to bring life and even some charm to these Capitol Hill caricatures.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Alpha House" is not yet as sharply honed as "Veep," but it could get there; it certainly has plenty of material to work with.</p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Another potential glitch may be that all four main characters are Republicans, and with creator Trudeau clearly on the other side of the aisle, conservative-leaning viewers may see <em>Alpha House</em> as just another Democrat/liberal attempt to make fun of them. While that may be true -- and recent Republican and Tea Party decisions have created an atmosphere of easy and just ridicule -- it might help <em>Alpha House </em>to show Democrats being the butt of the joke as well. That said, the first three episodes of <em>Alpha House</em> certainly don't paint the four primary characters as stupid, forgoing easy laughs for a more nuanced look at the entire political environment the four senators trying to live in, together.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">So, if your heaving, capacity-deprived DVRs are up for it, add another potential winner to the list of shows you're already watching.</p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;">It's often said that a political party is better served by having a strong, worthy opposition. That's at least true of political satires. Satire needs to have a point of view, and it's a strength of Alpha House that Trudeau doesn't hide his own.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">But comfortable superiority is the death of comedy. Good satire-The Colbert Report, say, or Doonesbury at its best-has a strong take without stacking the deck or setting anyone above ridicule. If Trudeau wants to argue, say, that today's GOP is hypocritical, extreme, or dangerous, that's fine-that's satire-but it would be stronger and funnier if it engaged with a non-caricature version of the party.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">The talent involved in Alpha House, and Amazon's commitment to a full 11-episode season, makes me hope it will get there, as Veep did. (Trudeau showed he can do sharp <keyword id="6355065" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="tv">TV</keyword> satire, in the election sendup Tanner '88 with Robert Altman, back in the pre-Sopranos days of HBO.) For now, though, it's on double secret probation.</p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>Like a lot of fledgling programmers, Amazon might turn tail on the hefty investment once it gets its nose bloodied or begins weighing the cost versus the benefits.
