The purchase amounted to roughly $8.6 billion in stock.</p><p>Buffett also took a $4.1 billion stake in <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/cvx-stock">Chevron</a> and established a $500 million investment in professional-services firm <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/mmc-stock">Marsh &amp; McLennan</a> through the December quarter.</p><p>Berkshire won regulatory approval to keep its three new investments private in its third quarter 13-F filing after arguing it wasn't yet done building the positions. New investments by the holding company tend to drive share prices higher, as a bullish outlook from Buffett often attracts new investors.</p><p>Elsewhere in Berkshire's portfolio, the firm trimmed its stakes in <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/aapl-stock">Apple</a> and <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/wfc-stock">Wells Fargo</a>. It fully exited its positions in <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/jpm-stock">JPMorgan</a>, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/pnc-stock">PNC</a>, and <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/mtb-stock">M&amp;T</a>. The legendary investor was optimistic the start of the health crisis, telling investors they should "never, ever bet against America." The average between 2008 and 2018 has hovered around 2%. This suggests that a dividend yield of 2% or more would be considered good or at least above average.</p><p>And the best-yielding do better than that, often around 4%-5%. To play it safe, a top rate of around 6% or so makes sense: It usually demonstrates the company has reached a growth point where it can generate real income without resorting to borrowing or other self-destructive measures. The GICS, jointly created by Standard &amp; Poor's Dow Jones and Morgan Stanley Capital International, provides a way for investors to categorize and analyze stocks. </p><p>In September 2018, GICS changed its index methodology and reorganized the communications sector.</p><p>Basically, it expanded the existing <keyword id="67974" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="telecommunications">telecommunications</keyword> sector to become a broader communications <em>services </em>sector. Stalwart telephone and traditional media stocks were suddenly in the same category as upstart, growth-oriented internet and info-tech companies. </p><p>Still, a common thread among these companies is their reliance on subscription fees and advertising revenue.</p><h2>Why invest in communications stocks?</h2><p>It's difficult to characterize communications stocks. Since the category change, the sector has become one that offers something for every investor. </p><p>Overall, communications is now better described as a growth sector - one likely to offer greater potential for appreciation than the market overall. </p><p>It's also now more cyclical, or dependent on economic trends - likely to function better in boom times and during bull <keyword id="31671" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="markets">markets</keyword>. </p><p>Still, depending on which specific stock you're talking about, your reason for investing in a communications company might have more to do with earning a reliable dividend than attempting to capitalize on trendy growth. While some communications companies do provide equipment, they aren't considered part of the IT sector because the GICS looks at the activities that produce more than 60% of a company's revenue when deciding how to classify it. Surprisingly, Zoom Video Communications (ZM) is classified as an IT stock.<h2>The advantages of communications stocks</h2><p>There are a variety of reasons for investors consider communications companies.</p><ul><li><strong>Performance.</strong> Over the last 12 months (Jan. 6, 2020, through Jan. 4, 2021), the S&amp;P Communication Services Select Sector index, which includes all the stocks in the communications sector, returned 23.22%. By comparison, the S&amp;P 500 index returned 14.4%. </li></ul><p>The index only goes back to September 2018 due to the communications category shift, so it's harder to describe this sector's long-term performance. However, when S&amp;P created its new index, it backtested it to December 21, 2007. It found that the sector returned 9.9% annualized over the next 10-ish years, through May 16, 2018. Over that same period, the S&amp;P 500's annualized return was <a href="http://www.moneychimp.com/features/market_cagr.htm">7.25</a>%.</p><ul><li><strong>Income.</strong> The growth companies in this sector help drive its returns. But the value companies provide investors with investment income. Verizon and AT&amp;T, for example, both pay rich dividends, and have a long history of doing so. </li><li><strong>Diversification.</strong> Many companies in this sector earn revenue from diversified services. Comcast is a great example; it makes money from broadcast television, cable television, broadband service, satellite service, movies, and theme parks.</li></ul><h2>The downsides of communications stocks</h2><p>Of course, no type of stock is without drawbacks. Those that are characteristic of communications include:</p><ul><li><strong>Regulatory risk.</strong> This industry is subject to government regulation, which can affect performance. For example, changing privacy laws poses a threat to communications companies that rely on using consumer data to tailor advertising and recommendations.</li><li><strong>Operational risk.</strong> While many communications stocks thrived during the pandemic, others took a beating - especially those in the entertainment, recreational, and travel field. Disney's theme parks, which account for about 30% of the company's revenue <a href="https://www.morningstar.com/articles/978014/pandemic-hits-communication-stocks-in-different-ways">according to Morningstar,</a> have been closed or operating at limited capacity since the first quarter of 2020. Live Nation Entertainment, parent of Ticketmaster, took a big hit as governments banned large gatherings, including concerts, festivals, and live sports. </li><li><strong>Lack of differentiation/competitiveness. </strong>Some communications companies struggle to stand out because their services strike their customers as commodities. Among streaming services, lack of customer loyalty and the ease of switching providers resulted in a 41% churn rate for 1Q 2020, <a href="https://www2.deloitte.com/content/dam/Deloitte/us/Documents/technology-media-telecommunications/us-tmt-2021-outlook-for-the-us-tme-industry.pdf">according to consulting firm Deloitte</a>. Vulnerability to technological change can also be an ongoing challenge.</li></ul><h2>How to invest in communications stocks</h2><p>You can buy individual shares or fractional shares of communications stocks through the usual brokerage channels - either online or apps, such as E*TRADE, Robinhood, SoFi Invest - or the traditional full-service firms, like Charles Schwab, TD Ameritrade, Fidelity, and Vanguard. </p><p>Of course, investing in an individual communications stock is riskier than investing in a communications industry ETF (sector risk) or index fund.</p><p>These are some of the biggest. Some of them also offer exposure to other sectors, such as utilities or information technology. How to invest in communications stocks, a sector that's huge, highly diversified, and growing - offering something for almost every type of investor

(NASD:AAPL) will replace AT&amp;T Inc. (NYSE:T) in the <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) after the close of trading on Wednesday, March 18. The </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">change will be effective with the opening of trading on Thursday, March 19. </span></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The index change was </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">prompted by Visa Inc.'s (NYSE:V) 4:1 stock split which is scheduled to be effective at the same </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">time. The post-split adjusted lower price of Visa will reduce the weighting of the Information </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Technology sector in the index. Adding Apple to the index will help to partially offset this reduction. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">In price weighted indices such as the DJIA, a large change in price of a high priced stock can have </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">a material impact on sector representation in the index and this index change is designed to </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">minimize that impact. The Telecommunication Services sector will continue to be represented in the </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">DJIA by Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ).</span></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"As the largest corporation in the world and a leader in technology, Apple is the clear choice for the <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Dow Jones Industrial Average, the most recognized stock market measure," says David M. The divisor used to calculate the </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">index from the components' prices on their respective home exchanges will be changed prior to the </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">opening on March 19. Apple is joining the Dow

<p>More bad news for the bears.</p>
<p>Q1 earnings - despite widespread expectations that they were going to be weak, and possibly show a year-over-year decline in EPS - are actually doing good.</p>
<p>That's what Dan Greenhaus of BTIG (<a href="http://www.twitter.com/danbtig">@danBTIG</a>) points out in a note to clients this morning.</p>
<p>He writes:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Earnings season was supposed to go terribly. Television news was littered (again) with people discussing the downward trend (again) in expected earnings and by extension, the negative impulse such an earnings season would apply to stocks. We did not believe this to be the case, arguing that earnings growth was likely to be in the 1-3% range and as we find ourselves half way through earnings season, that forecast is looking to be accurate, albeit in the middle of the range. Earnings from Utilities and Energy names have been excellent while buy rated AAPL reported sales figures roughly $2 billion above analyst estimates; somewhat unsurprisingly, the utility and energy sectors are the two best performers in the S&amp;P 500 since the start of April. Similarly, telecom (VZ) is having a hard earnings season and its price performance has been poor.</p>
<p>Here's some charts that show the nice performance. You can see how EPS growth expectations have spiked nicely in recent weeks, while companies across all sizes are showing nice revenue growth.</p>

Everyone Expected Earnings Season To Be Really Weak - Look What Actually Happened

<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Good Morning - US Futures are up over 50bp this AM on the back of the DJIA biggest one day gain since July Yesterday - Strong Chinese Data combined with Increased signs US backing off Syrian attack, as diplomatic options materialize, and Obama realizes he doesn't have the Congressional votes propelling global equities. </p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">EU Stocks are jumping to 1M highs, led by the DAX up 1.6% while EU Fins up 2% as PIIGS Yields retreat.   The Asia Pacific Index has posted longest winning streak in 9mos, led by a 3.7% jump in India as the Rupee strengthens on their falling trade deficit.  Nikkei gained 1.5%, and Shanghai posted a 1.1% gain - and EM contagion states like Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia were all well bid for.   We have very good equity volume globally, with EU up 40% against 20day averages, Nikkei 50% above -DAX 60% above, while China's volumes were a record overnight. </p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Right now, the US10YY is higher - Funding for the VZ debt offering, Syrian Fears subsiding, and a rotation into riskier Sovereign debt the likely causes.  The A$ the standout FX, jumping toward 2M highs - Strong China data overnight propelling, but the DXY is higher as the greenback jumps against Euro and Yen - Causing a commodity headwind.  While Copper is higher (China) - Gold and Silver getting hit (Syria, Better Eco Data), and the Crude Complex is under pressure (Seeing Baby Steps in Libya, with a refinery due to open tomorrow)  Tech will be a focus today, as we get the AAPL refresh at 1pmET, and a TXN Mid-Q after the bell.  </p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">VZ will be marketing a record-breaking deal - Anticipation of what would be a record-breaking deal already is pushing bond prices down and yields up for Verizon and other companies in the telecommunications industry.  Finally, keep an eye on Itlaian headlines - The postponed vote on Berlusconi has some optimism there - one that could quickly reverse ant put upside pressure on US yields…</p>
