After <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>’s offer of $800-$850 million got rejected by <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword>, the Indian e-commerce giant is planning to make a new one. Reportedly, Flipkart might offer $900-950 million for buying Snapdeal. Snapdeal had asked for $1 billion for acquisition and this new offer is somewhat near to the asking price. PTI quoted sources as saying the deal is not finalised yet and the new offer will be made only next week. Snapdeal's board has already rejected a takeover offer of $800-850 million (around Rs 5,500 crore) from Flipkart as it felt the amount undervalued the company given that the due diligence report was clean. <keyword id="163404" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Softbank">SoftBank</keyword>, Snapdeal's largest investor, has been proactively mediating the sale for the past few months. The board of Snapdeal also has representation from its founders (<keyword id="219793" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kunal-Bahl">Kunal Bahl</keyword> and Rohit Bansal), Nexus Venture Partners and Kalaari Capital. Meanwhile, Snapdeal is also looking for buyers to sell <keyword id="3489561" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="vulcan-express">Vulcan Express</keyword>, its logistics arm. Snapdeal's valuations have also plummeted from about $6.5 billion in February 2016. SoftBank has already written off over $1 billion on valuation of its investment in Snapdeal.

<keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword>’s logistics arm <keyword id="3489561" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="vulcan-express">Vulcan Express</keyword> is on sale and many companies have expressed interest. Companies such as Gati, Peepul Capital, TVS Logistics, etc have shown keen interest to acquire Vulcan Express and the deal may get sealed in coming two months. Reportedly, Snapdeal wants to seal Vulcan Express deal at around Rs 90-120 crore. The deal is expected to provide relief to Snapdeal monetarily as the owners continue to negotiate the deal with <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>. Interestingly, Snapdeal is now looking for other parties also as exclusivity period with Flipkart for a transaction, which also included sale of Vulcan, ended this month. However, it could be tough. Meanwhile, sources told ET that a potential acquisition of Vulcan Express may be routed by Warburg through one of its portfolio companies in India. This, however, could not be independently verified ET. Vulcan Express, which provides end-to-end logistics services, was formed in 2014 and has nearly one million square feet in warehousing space.

Although it did not disclose how many employees were <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=lay-offs&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">laid-off</a>, it is estimated around 1,500 people were asked to leave across three units- <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword>, <keyword id="6377963" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Freecharge">FreeCharge</keyword> and <keyword id="3489561" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="vulcan-express">Vulcan Express</keyword> As Snapdeal has begun the process, one of the issues concerning employees is the value of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Esops&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Employee Stock Options</a> (Esops). The Esops have gone down drastically. In May 2015, Snapdeal had made several senior hires with the promise of heavy chunks of Esops. "I joined Snapdeal two years ago, when the company was valued at $6.5 billion. I was entitled to shares worth Rs 7-8 lakh. When I checked the value of my shares in the first week of March, they had fallen to Rs 1.8 lakh,” a former employee involved in strategy and business development at the organisation told ET. "At FreeCharge, employees have received their severance and settlements as indicated. I received my payout between April 10 and 12 which was the promised payout date,” a former senior executive told ET. Reportedly, severance packages for the affected employees ranged between two and four months' of salaries.

<keyword id="6752202" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="TVS-Logistics">TVS Logistics</keyword>, India's leading third-party logistics player, and <keyword id="879377" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Future-Supply-Chain-Solutions">Future Supply Chain Solutions</keyword>, promoted by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/small-business/lifestyle/futuregroup-hopes-its-fashion-business-to-grow-30-in-fy18/articleshow/57715035.cms">Future Group</a> and owned by <keyword id="44950" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kishore-Biyani">Kishore Biyani</keyword>, are both willing to acquire <keyword id="3489561" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="vulcan-express">Vulcan Express</keyword>, the logistics unit owned by New Delhi-based ecommerce firm <a href="businessinsider.in/topic/snapdeal">Snapdeal</a>. Both parties are presently holding independent talks with <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> and Vulcan Express’s parent company Jasper Infotech, so that they can either acquire or pick up a majority stake in the three-year-old venture. The value of the apparent deal could not be estimated. However, the race to acquire <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/small-business/people/Vijay-Ghadge-Vulcan-Express/articleshow/53188257.cms">Vulcan</a> doesn’t only involve these two leading players. Two private equity firms, which specialise in buyout deals, are also aiming to get hold of the logistics unit. TVS Logistics and Future Supply Chain Solutions both want to acquire Vulcan Express

<keyword id="2230975" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vijay-Ghadge">Vijay Ghadge</keyword>, who earlier served as the COO of <keyword id="2230197" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="GoJavas">GoJavas</keyword>, has now been appointed as the COO of <keyword id="3489561" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="vulcan-express">Vulcan Express</keyword>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/This-tweak-in-policy-by-Snapdeal-is-a-win-for-sellers-but-will-hassle-online-buyers/articleshow/53169441.cms">Snapdeal</a>’s captive logistics unit. 
 It’s just been three months that Ghadge quit GoJavas, the e-commerce logistics company that has its 42% stake held by e-commerce giant <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword>, which had also <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Snapdeal-invests-20-mn-in-gojavas-to-reach-100-more-Indian-cities-easily/articleshow/49258885.cms">invested </a>Rs 240 crore in the company in two subsequent rounds in 2015.

GoJavas is the largest logistics partner for New Delhi-based Snapdeal, which makes for around 85% its business along with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/No-more-low-margin-products-on-Jabong-as-it-switches-focus-from-portfolio-to-profits/articleshow/52399169.cms">Jabong</a>. 
 
"Snapdeal is unlikely to invest further in GoJavas. The logistics entity, however, has been trying to raise a round on their own where Snapdeal will be participating," a sector analyst told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/vijay-ghadge-joins-as-coo-of-snapdeals-captive-logistics-unit-vulcan-express/articleshow/53183297.cms">ET</a>.

If people aware of the plan are to be believed, India’s leading ecommerce company <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> will trim its workforce in the next two months. The online marketplace has started cost cutting as growth graph is getting stunted and investors less willing to provide fresh funds. 
 The move is expected to affect about 1,000 employees directly employed by the company in its ecommerce marketplace while thousands of contract workers in the company's logistics division are also expected to be let off, people aware of the situation told <keyword id="77091" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Economic-Times">The Economic Times</keyword>. 
 "5,000-odd contract staff employed by the company's logistics subsidiary <keyword id="3489561" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="vulcan-express">Vulcan Express</keyword> will be pared down as well as about 3,000 people on the rolls of the logistics company," a company executive and two consultants working with the company informed the ET. 
 
Early this week, the managers had received mails from top management asking them to ‘right-size’ their teams. However on being enquired by the ET, the company chose not speak directly on the issue. Instead they responded to the financial daily saying, "On our journey towards profitability, it is imperative that we continue to drive efficiency in our business, which enables us to pass on the value to our consumers and sellers. As in the past, and like all good companies do, we will continue to assess resource allocation in furtherance of our goals of enhancing customer and seller experience while driving high quality growth.”

Snapdeal to fire 1000 employees
in next two months

<a href="http://www1.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=snapdeal&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Snapdeal</a>, which lost its number two position to <a href="http://www1.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=amazon+india&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Amazon India</a> recently, is doing everything it can to regain the market share. 
 To step up its delivery system and supply chain, <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> is planning to fully buy <keyword id="2230197" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="GoJavas">GoJavas</keyword>, its primary delivery partner. 
 
Presently, Snapdeal holds a minority yet significant stake in GoJavas. 
 
Snapdeal, last year, bought 42 per cent stake in GoJavas, which was valued at Rs 250 crore at that time. 
 ET quoted sources as saying Snapdeal will likely execute the acquisition through <keyword id="3489561" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="vulcan-express">Vulcan Express</keyword>, its end-to-end logistics unit.

Last year, Snapdeal COO <a href="http://www1.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=rohit+bansal&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Rohit Bansal</a> had said the <a href="http://www1.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=online+marketplace&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">online marketplace</a> had plans to rake in $300million to strengthen its supply chain and logistics infrastructure. 
 
Sources told ET that Go-Javas has been struggling to raise a fresh round of capital, and an acquisition by Snapdeal will be a win-win for both entities. "Snapdeal is dependent on GoJavas as its efficiencies had improved after working with them. Vulcan absorbing GoJavas is a close possibility as the marketplace had invested in the team that built Go-Javas, with Ghadge joining the latter," the second source told ET. 
 
"Ecommerce marketplaces are currently focused on improving their unit metrics and hence might be careful in considering investment in logistics companies," Manish Saigal, managing director at Alvarez and Marsal in India, told ET. 
 
In Feb this year, GoJavas delivered to nearly 300 towns and cities and set a target of increasing the number to 600-800 towns and cities in next one and a half years. 
 For Snapdeal, the acquisition is quite strategic as it lost its number two post to <keyword id="6354743" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-India">Amazon India</keyword>. 
 
Even Amazon is raking in money in its India arm to grasp market share.

He was also accurate in his theories that when the moon moved in front of the sun, it caused a solar eclipse. Similarly, when the Earth was in between the sun and moon, there would be a lunar eclipse.He also used the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-lunar-eclipses-work-earth-moon-red-shadow-2018-7">moon's shadow</a> during an eclipse to estimate its size, but his calculations gave him a much smaller answer than reality.<h2>3. Greek astronomer Hipparchus would have just been a child at the time, but it's possible he saw the event.Years later, Hipparchus may have used secondhand accounts of that same eclipse to make one of the era's most mathematically accurate estimates of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mind-boggling-nasa-photo-shows-moon-distance-from-earth-2022-10">moon's distance from Earth</a>.Though Hipparchus' direct writings are lost, a 4th-century scholar <a target="_blank" href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0021828618817175">detailed</a> how he used the information.The astronomer estimated the distance between where the total eclipse was in modern day Turkey and Alexandria, Egypt — where a fifth of the sun showed — to make his calculation.Based on his math, Hipparchus offered a few ranges, including a mean distance of about 281,387 miles.He wasn't terribly far off. The moon is about 238,855 miles away.<h2>4. Predicting the path of an eclipse</h2><div type="image" title="A map of England showing the path of an 18th century eclipse" height="2445" width="2000" msid="109088917" hostid="261" sizebytes="708824"></div>In the 11th or 12th century, Mayan astronomers made a remarkable prediction for their time: They calculated that a total solar eclipse would occur in 1991, and their prediction was accurate to within a day.It would be centuries until humans made a more accurate prediction. In the 18th century, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/edmond-halley-solar-lunar-eclipse-manuscripts-sell-auction-2023-12">Edmond Halley</a>, better known for discovering a comet with his name, made a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/science/the-h-word/2015/may/03/halleys-eclipse-newtonian-selling-science-history">map</a> predicting the path of the May 3, 1715 solar eclipse with extreme accuracy.Others made maps before him, but Halley based his prediction on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/isaac-newton-burnt-notes-pyramids-apocalypse-theology-sold-auction-2020-12">Isaac Newton</a>'s theory of universal gravitation, which helped him pinpoint the eclipse's timing to within four minutes.<h2>5. It took an eclipse for an astronomer to discover it.French astronomer Pierre Jules César Janssen had <a target="_blank" href="https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/how-scientists-discovered-helium-first-alien-element-1868-180970057/">traveled</a> to Guntur, India just for the August 18, 1868 eclipse. He was using a spectroscope, a prism-like device for separating sunlight into a spectrum.Janssen saw a yellow line with a wavelength unlike any other element. Around the same time, English astronomer Norman Lockyer developed an instrument for viewing the sun even without an eclipse. He saw the same line.Lockyer called the mysterious element helium. It took a couple of decades for scientists to see it on Earth, during experiments on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/italy-skeleton-of-a-roman-killed-steps-from-sea-fled-vesuvius-eruption-2021-12">Mount Vesuvius</a> lava and uranium.<h2>6. In 1915, Albert Einstein <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nbcnews.com/mach/science/einstein-showed-newton-was-wrong-about-gravity-now-scientists-are-ncna1038671">explained</a> Mercury's unusual orbit with his general <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/albert-einstein-thought-experiments-2023-10">theory of relativity</a>. It fit the data better than a mysterious, difficult-to-spot extra planet.Despite this evidence, Einstein's theory didn't receive scientific proof until the May 29, 1919 eclipse. The physicist had said the sun's gravity would bend light from nearby stars.In 1919, expeditions traveled to Principe, an island off the coast of Africa, and Brazil. While the moon blocked the sun, the astronomers took photographs.The stars seemed to have shifted locations compared to the reference photos. ULA wanted to launch the rocket into <keyword id="41531" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="space">space</keyword> this year, but the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/about-blue-origins-be-4-engine-2015-12">engines</a> have been delayed, Ars reported. The Vulcan rocket is a two-stage launch vehicle that is set to send satellites into orbit for the US Space Force."There is great concern about this engine development," one industry source told Ars. "There is great concern that Blue is not putting enough attention and priority on the engine."The source added that ULA CEO <keyword id="2522878" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tory-Bruno">Tory Bruno</keyword> wasn't showing the full extent of his concern to the public."He's protecting Blue Origin," a second industry source told Ars, commenting on Bruno's lack of public criticism of the engine delay. "It does no good to throw Blue Origin under the bus."Bruno had previously said he expected the rocket to launch in 2021. But he told <a href="https://aviationweek.com/defense-space/podcast-interview-ulas-tory-bruno">Aviation Week</a> in June that the first launch had been nudged back to 2022.Blue Origin and ULA back in 2014 <a href="https://www.blueorigin.com/news/ula-and-blue-origin-announce-partnership-to-develop-new-american-rocket-engine">announced</a> their partnership to fund the development of the new BE-4 rocket engines.A third industry source told Ars that ULA might not be happy with the way its collaboration with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeff-bezos-blue-origin-stepping-down-amazon-ceo-space-2021-2">Blue Origin</a> worked out but for the time being had "no recourse but to make the marriage with Blue Origin work."The sources told Ars that Space Force officials were also annoyed about the delay because they wanted to start flying the rocket. The tension, they said, had put pressure on Blue Origin engineers.ULA and Blue Origin did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Insider.ULA declined to comment to Ars on when Blue Origin's rocket engines were expected to be finished. It also declined to comment to Ars on any fallout with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeff-bezos-thousands-sign-petitions-return-earth-space-blue-origin-2021-6">Bezos' company</a>.Industry sources told Ars that ULA chose Blue Origin's engine over one designed by Aerojet Rocketdyne but was unlikely to reconsider Aerojet's engines.

Fitzpatrick, founder, CEO, and chief investment officer at <a href="https://www.vulcanvaluepartners.com/">Vulcan Value Partners</a>, doesn't fit nicely into the traditional value-investor mold."As our name would suggest, we're value investors at Vulcan Value Partners, but we do not look for cheap stocks," he said on the "<a href="https://www8.gsb.columbia.edu/valueinvesting/resources/podcast">Value Investing with Legends</a>" podcast. "Instead, we put all of our energy into finding business with inherently stable values." Before starting Vulcan Value Partners in 2007, Fitzpatrick enjoyed 17 years of double-digit returns as a portfolio manager by relying heavily on his differentiated, stability-focused way of viewing the world. Since then, he's ranked in the top 1% of value managers.Today, he's taking full advantage of the volatility that's been prevalent in the market. "This is more than 3 standard deviations away from the mean," he said. "This is an extraordinary event, and I think it's really important to make sure you're doing thorough analysis."<h3>A recipe for success in today's environment</h3>"Our goal in managing the portfolios is to drive our weighted average price-to-value ratio as low as we can," he said. But before we dive into the specifics of his investment approach, it's important to note how Fitzpatrick is thinking the current <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/coronavirus">coronavirus</a>-driven stock selloff. "If you look out five years from now - while this current situation is terrible ... we certainly will not have forgotten it - we will be back to normal," he said. "Companies earnings should be growing very nicely, we should be back to full employment, everything should be - not that this never happened - but things should be back to normal."These views inform Fitzpatrick's four-part checklist for achieving outsized returns - one he's using to take advantage of a market destabilized by the coronavirus. Each element is highlighted in bold.At the heart of Fitzpatrick's investment strategy is a long-term time horizon. Every potential investment is viewed through the lens of at least a five year holding period. This way, he's able to ride out bouts of unruly market volatility without undermining his original thesis."We were buying companies that had net cash on their balance sheet during the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/financial-crisis">financial crisis</a> - and they were really, really discounted. We're doing the same thing today; right now," he said. "Our companies have double-digit free cash flow yield, with net cash on the balance sheet - and that free cash flow yield is going to grow over time." With an emphasis on stable values, long-termism, free cash flow yields, and strong balance sheets with net cash, Fitzpatrick is also leveraging concentration (currently 22 positions) in this market to take advantage of juicy opportunities. "When you get into periods like this and periods like the Financial Crisis, we tend to become more concentrated," he said. "When this started, we were selling 80 cent dollars and buying 60-cent dollars - and as it progressed, we've been selling 60-cent dollars to buy 40-cent dollars."By employing this methodology, Fitzpatrick says that his portfolios look almost nothing like the market. Buried within the indexes are companies and industries he says have taken on more leverage than they can handle - and he has no interest in owning them."What we love to see is seeing what a company is supposed to do, and that is: Invest for the long term, strengthen their competitive position - and maybe miss earnings for a year or so, or more because they're doing the right things to strengthen the business," he said. "We're giving you points for that; We're very supportive of that."As you would expect, most investors would probably view prolonged earnings misses as a sign to vacate their position, but not Fitzpatrick. In fact, he says "we find a lot of opportunities like that." <h3>Who's going to benefit? </h3>Against that backdrop, Fitzpatrick is quick to relay a swath of companies he says should benefit from the economic fallout resulting from the crisis. "In the long run, someone like <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/fb-stock" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Facebook</a> is a real beneficiary of this," he said. "<a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/googl-stock">Alphabet</a>, with YouTube, is a big beneficiary of this. We have to rebuild our infrastructure: our bridges, our roadways, our airports."Even after his initial campaign launch, he has <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2015/12/16/one-thing-donald-trump-got-right-about-how-the-u-s-is-spending-its-money/">committed to these large</a> improvements <a href="http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2016/05/donald-trump-is-campaigning-on-the-new-deal.html">throughout his campaign.</a>Clinton, for her part, has said <a href="https://www.hillaryclinton.com/issues/infrastructure/">she would increase federal spending</a> on infrastructure projects by $275 billion in the five years following her possible inauguration.The election could go either way and that would be good news for construction companies, equipment manufacturers and materials firms. This development has not been lost on Wall Street according to Wood. Here's his breakdown (emphasis ours):Indeed in recognition of this theme, which judging by meetings over the past week and more is clearly gaining traction with US based investors, GREED &amp; fear shows how a 'smokestack' portfolio of five US stocks geared to this area has performed. The stocks appear to have started performing after years of trailing the S&amp;P 500. Thus, the portfolio has risen by 22% so far in 2016 and is up 43% from its January low.
