Gold prices rose by Rs 320 to Rs 53,449 per 10 grams in the national capital on Wednesday in line with firm global trend and depreciation in the rupee, according to HDFC Securities. In the previous trade, the precious metal had closed at Rs 53,129 per 10 grams. <keyword id="35264" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="silver" source="Orion">Silver</keyword>, however, dropped Rs 125 to Rs 62,682 per kg. The rupee depreciated 66 paise to 81.57 against the US dollar in early trade on Wednesday, tracking the strength of the American currency in the overseas market and a muted trend in domestic equities. "Picking sides alienates sides. CMOs are uniquely supposed to bring advocacy for all consumers into the company and consider how all consumers will react to different issues."Some experts previously told Insider that brands must have a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cmos-how-brands-should-participate-in-social-political-issues-2019-8">point of view on social and political issues</a>, but Whitler isn't convinced that this is the case."The theory has yet to be proven that brands must take sides," she said. "There is actually research that taking a side creates an asymmetric negative effect. Those who agree with you may be neutral to slightly agree. But those who disagree tend to disagree severely."Brands that do choose to take sides must rigorously focus-group their messaging, Whitler said. She noted that many statements about certain issues and topics that companies release could be tested rather than "thrown out," which could consequently spawn backlash."Marketing has all kinds of tools and techniques to understand consumers," Whitler said. "You can read how people will react. This is how it's done in politics, where you test and test until you reach a statement or position that will bring in the broadest public."Ewan McIntyre, the VP analyst and chief of research for Gartner's marketing practice, agreed. "There are too many examples of clumsy executions," he said. "We strongly believe you need to go into these conversations with deep knowledge and insights. Social issues are foremost on the minds of CMOs, but you have to understand what your brand means to your audience and where you have permission to talk about this stuff."

New Delhi, Apr 5 () Equity market sentiment will continue to be driven by the trend in coronavirus cases globally as well as in India, analysts said, adding that indices may see high volatility in the holiday-shortened week ahead. Markets will be closed on Monday for 'Mahavir Jayanti' and on Friday for 'Good Friday'. "Going ahead, market would continue to be highly volatile and would track global markets along with the trend in coronavirus cases globally and locally. "However, it has corrected significantly, providing significant investment opportunity for the long term investors," said Siddhartha Khemka, Head - Retail Research, Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd said. The number of Covid-19 cases in the country has neared the 3,000-mark, with the death toll rising to 68. The deadly virus has infected over a million people across the world, and killed more than 50,000. Fitch Ratings on Friday warned that India's 2020-21 GDP growth may stand at 2 per cent -- the slowest since the economy was liberalised 30 years back. It added that the global economy will fall into a deep recession in 2020, with growth print contracting by 1.9 per cent, pulled down by larger contractions in the US and the Euro zone. Concerns over a looming recession have kept investors on the edge. During the last week, the Sensex lost 2,224.64 points or 7.46 per cent. "The market trend will be driven by any signs of the virus infections peaking out in the worst affected countries. India's efforts to keep the infection under control have seen some success and some hurdles, and any news with regards to the lockdown being withdrawn, may be met with some positivity," Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, said. On the macroeconomic front, PMI data for the services sector is due on Monday. "We believe the market trend will continue to remain challenging until the fresh cases start to decline. Joe Biden's climate plan is great news for Tesla, Wall Street analyst says

New Delhi, Dec 22 () Equity markets may witness consolidation in the holiday-shortened week ahead amid lack of major triggers, though some stock-specific action can be expected due to a rejig in Sensex constituents, analysts said.
 Tata Motors, Tata Motors DVR, Yes Bank and Vedanta will be dropped from the BSE's benchmark Sensex from December 23. They will be replaced by UltraTech Cement, Titan and Nestle India.
 The reshuffle can lead to some price movements as fund managers adjust their portfolios, experts added.
 Additionally, December series futures and options (F&amp;O) contracts will expire on Thursday.
 Markets would remain closed on Wednesday for Christmas.
 "A short term consolidation cannot be ruled out as investors may slide to a holiday mood, last two weeks we had a solid Santa clause rally," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services.
 Going ahead, the Union Budget is likely to be crucial for the market on account of new steps to attract investments, he added.
 "The year end is likely to witness extremely stock specific movement with only a few pockets showing strength," said Jimeet Modi, Founder &amp; CEO, SAMCO Securities &amp; StockNote.
 The domestic market would track factors such as crude oil prices, rupee-dollar movement and investment trend by foreign investors.
 Participants will also track RBI's special OMO on Monday.
 The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will simultaneously purchase and sell government securities worth Rs 10,000 crore under a special Open Market Operation (OMO).
 Such exercises are done by the central bank when the proceeds from sale of short-term securities are used to buy long-term government securities or bonds in a bid to bring down interest rates on long-term securities.
 Religare Broking, VP - Research, Ajit Mishra said, "Given the sharp run up, we remain cautious on the markets and expect some consolidation in the near term. Meanwhile investors would continue to track global markets."
 Equity benchmarks rose marginally to close at record highs for the fourth straight session on Friday, buoyed by bank, finance and IT shares.
 The 30-share BSE Sensex closed at 41,681.54. while the NSE Nifty finished at 12,271.80

Markets may witness consolidation in holiday-shortened week ahead: Analysts

New Delhi, Jan 12 () Quarterly earnings, inflation data and the much-awaited US-China trade deal signing would drive the equity markets this week, according to analysts.
 "Market wants to look forward where Q3 earnings and pre-Budget movement will be the theme of this week. In terms of earnings, Wipro, IndusInd Bank, Reliance Industries, HCL Technologies and HDFC Bank will be key companies that will post their Q3 results this week," said Santosh Meena, Senior Research Analyst, TradingBells.
 He added that Infosys shares may react positively on Monday after the company's audit committee gave a clean chit to the management on allegations of misconduct.
 Infosys on Friday said the board's audit committee has completed the independent probe into the anonymous whistleblower allegations and found "no evidence" of financial impropriety or executive misconduct.
 The IT services major reported a 23.7 per cent rise in consolidated net profit at Rs 4,466 crore for the December quarter. The earnings were announced after market hours on Friday.
 "Markets will first react to IT major Infosys results in the early trade on Monday. Meanwhile, volatility would remain high on the stock-specific front due to prevailing earnings season and global uncertainty," said Ajit Mishra, VP - Research, Religare Broking Ltd.
 Among macroeconomic data announcements, retail and WPI inflation numbers will be released on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.
 On the global front, with US-Iran tensions cooling off, focus will largely shift to the upcoming US-China trade deal signing.
 Kotak Mahindra Asset Management Company, Senior VP and Head of Equity Research, Shibani Kurian said, "From here on, the equity markets would focus on the upcoming Union Budget and also RBI policy at the start of February. Markets would also take cues from the Q3 FY20 earnings season with key focus being on management commentary on business outlook."
 Markets would on Monday may also react to industrial production data which was announced post market hours on Friday.
 The country's industrial output grew 1.8 per cent in November, turning positive after three months of contraction, on account of growth in the manufacturing sector.
 "Markets are heading for testing times given that the result season has set in and Budget parleys too will have to be digested in weeks to come. Volatility is expected to increase, although prices are not expected to move much till Budget. However, sector specific rallies are likely to continue," Jimeet Modi, Founder &amp; CEO, SAMCO Securities &amp; StockNote said.

Delhi election results and coronavirus impact will be key drivers for markets this week, according to analysts

New Delhi, Mar 15 () Equity markets are likely to see more volatility this week and may also witness a relief rally after suffering a massive drubbing recently due to the coronavirus pandemic, analysts said. In a nerve-wracking week for the markets, the BSE Sensex plummeted 3,473.14 points or 9.24 per cent while the NSE Nifty lost 1,034.25 points or 9.41 per cent, largely in tandem with global equities which succumbed to panic selling triggered by the coronavirus outbreak. Domestic markets witnessed a roller-coaster session on Friday, with trading being halted for the first time in 12 years as benchmarks plunged over 10 per cent in opening trade, before staging a record-shattering comeback. Analysts said participants would keep an eye on the spread of the coronavirus, as well as further stimulus measures by global central banks and governments. The US Federal Reserve is also scheduled to announce its rate decision this week. "Markets would take a while to recover from this significant price damage. While volatility may continue in coming days, we could see intermittent relief rallies, however these are likely to be short-lived. In such times of global volatility, retail investors should keep calm and not panic," said Siddhartha Khemka, Head - Retail Research, Motilal Oswal Financial Services. The number of novel coronavirus cases in the country rose to 107 on Sunday, with 12 fresh cases in Maharashtra, the Union Health Ministry said. The virus has infected more than 150,000 people worldwide and killed over 5,600. On the macroeconomic front, WPI inflation data will be announced on Monday. "Temporary relief was seen in the global markets based on stimulus hopes. Investors are still advised to be alert since the volatility, as measured by the volatility index has reached all-time highs. Sentiments around the spread of the virus will continue to drive the markets and any signs of the rate of infections falling will be a positive," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services. "In the near term, we expect volatility to remain high and maintain cautious stance," Ajit Mishra, VP - Research, Religare Broking Ltd said. According to IndiaNivesh, Head - Institutional Equities, Vinay Pandit, "Markets have seen a lower circuit for the first time after 2008. But equating this situation with 2008 is unfair. 2008 was a global financial meltdown whereas the 2020 correction due to concerns on account of coronavirus are overdone. New Delhi, May 17 () The Indian equity market's movement this week will hinge on coronavirus-related developments such as lockdown 4.0 specifics and new infections trend, besides quarterly earnings, analysts said. In addition, experts said, domestic bourses will take cues from global peers which have been reeling from fears of a second wave of COVID-19 in some countries. The market will also assess the effectiveness of the government's mega Rs 20-lakh crore stimulus package that, analysts believe, would be critical for the revival of the economy. The first of the five tranches of the mega stimulus, unveiled by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman last Wednesday, had failed to enthuse the market on Thursday. "Government has made it clear that it will introduce the measures in tranches, but execution is key and that will be followed by the markets. Markets will also be driven by the rate of infections, lockdown 4.0 norms and any stock specific earnings commentary in the ongoing results season," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services. Ajit Mishra, VP - Research, Religare Broking Ltd, said, "It seems like markets are awaiting further details (of stimulus package) before making any reaction and we may see the possible response on Monday i.e. May 18." The government in its first four tranches of the stimulus package focussed on credit line to small businesses and new fund creations to be shouldered by banks and financial institutions with very little extra budget spending. In the last set of measures, the finance minister on Sunday announced plans to privatise PSUs in non-strategic sectors and suspend loan default-triggered bankruptcy filings for one year, and also gave a Rs 40,000 crore hike in allocation for the rural employment guarantee scheme to provide jobs to migrant workers. "Now the market would again focus on global cues and may continue to remain under pressure. There is also fear of a second wave of pandemic spread and extended period of economic slowdown. Further, the earnings season so far suggest more volatility and disruption," Siddhartha Khemka, Head - Retail Research, Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd, said. Markets would now await for the new norms of lockdown 4.0, he said. Last week, the Sensex fell 544.97 points or 1.72 per cent. On the earnings front, Bharti Airtel Limited, Apollo Tyres, Bajaj Finance, Tata Power Company, Bajaj Auto, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories and Hindustan Zinc are some of the major companies to announce their results this week. Dropbox was well-received on Wall Street after its IPO in 2018, but then faltered as the company wasn't growing its paying user base or revenue as fast as investors wanted. Dropbox has a freemium model where users can start using the product for free before moving to a paid option with more features.On Thursday, Dropbox reported quarterly revenue of $446 million, above the $443 million Wall Street expected, and an increase of 19% from a year prior. It reported adjusted earnings per share of $0.16, above the $0.14 that analysts expected. User numbers also grew, and Dropbox said it had 14.3 million paying users in the fourth quarter, an increase from 14 million in the third quarter. Average revenue per paying user was $125, an increase from $123.15 in the third quarter.On a call with analysts after the results on Thursday, CEO Drew Houston said the company expects to be profitable by the end of 2020, and CFO Ajay Vashee said Dropbox plans to generate over $1 billion in free cash flow by 2024. In 2019, Dropbox revamped its product to open up to tighter integrations with other workplace apps like Google Drive, Slack and Zoom. The company also saw a lot of leadership turnover in 2019, and recently brought on 4 new executives, indicating that the turmoil is starting to settle. Both factors, in addition to the fact that Dropbox raised its operating-margin and free-cash outlook for 2020 and over the long term and delivered better than expected results, have made investors more bullish on the stock going forward.Analysts say they will now be looking to see if Dropbox maintains that growth, and how the new executives are positioned help drive the company in the right direction. <h2>New management </h2>"Dropbox management - in particular with the addition of new leadership - has aligned the company to focus on a smaller number of bets to grow margins," Jason Ader, an analyst at William Blair wrote in a research note.Dropbox said it will be focusing on growing its customer base for its new platform, making it easier for companies to add new users, while also developing a product for personal use that uses some of those integrations to attract new paying customers.It recently hired a new COO, Olivia Nottebohm, who was previously a VP of sales and operations at Google Cloud, with the job of growing the user base for its G Suite productivity suite. The COO role was vacant for the 16 months before Nottebohm joined. In Q4, Dropbox's cheif customer officer, Yamini Rangan, left and Nottebohm is expected to take on a lot of her previous responsibility. Analysts say her previous experience at Google is something from which Dropbox could greatly benefit."We believe the company's new COO, who comes from Google and was a key contributor to the SMB success of G Suite, will complement the [management] team and bring proven experience around scaling a very similar billion dollar-plus business," said Alex Zukin, an analyst at RBC capital markets. Dropbox also recently hired Tifenn Dano Kwan, previously CMO at SAP Ariba, as its new chief marketing officer. And the company also replaced former CTO Quentin Clark, who left at the end of 2019, with Bharat Mediratta, ex-Google engineer and cofounder of educational startup AltSchool.<h2>Revenue growth </h2>Pat Walravens, an analyst at JMP Securities, said he took it as a good sign that Dropbox stopped the trend of decelerating revenue growth it saw over the last nine quarters. In addition to revamping its product, Dropbox also changed its pricing, which could have been a factor in the revenue growth it saw last quarter."We like how Dropbox arrested the nine-quarter trend of decelerating revenue growth that it experienced from 2Q17 to 2Q19, the way it has repriced and repackaged its solutions, the potential for the new Dropbox helps to bring all of a user's content together, whether in the cloud or in traditional files," Walravens wrote in a research note. Heather Bellini at Goldman Sachs echoed that sentiment, and wrote in a research note that the repricing and repackaging continues to be a "tailwind to revenues."RBC analyst Zukin notes that new COO Nottebohm's experience could be key as Dropbox "contemplates appropriate pricing and packaging changes in light of an evolving set of product priorities."Got a tip? "We are officially declaring that the economy has fallen into a recession," Bank of America economists led by <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/coronavirus-recession-already-hit-us-economy-pandemic-bank-america-gdp-2020-3-1029012857">Michelle Meyer wrote in a note to investors on Thursday</a>. "It is a deep plunge." A recession spares no industries, but four Wall Street analysts and investors that Business Insider talked to said the clean-energy sector - which was the target of more than $360 billion of investment last year, according to the research firm BloombergNEF - might be dealt a relatively soft blow. <a href="http://newsletter.businessinsider.com/join/4np/power-line">Click here to subscribe to Power Line</a>, Business Insider's weekly clean-energy newsletter."Anyone in the renewables sector is better than most," Jigar Shah, the president and cofounder of the investment firm Generate Capital said. "People like this asset class better than any other." <h2>Low interest rates are especially beneficial for renewable energy projects</h2>The price of renewable electricity is largely determined by the upfront cost of construction - what a company charges to build a solar or wind farm, for example.Once those farms are set up, the input is minimal, unlike a natural gas or coal power plant, which require fuel to operate. And that's especially true for solar facilities, says Colin Rusch, an analyst at Oppenheimer &amp; Co., "because there are no moving parts and limited maintenance." With the cost of energy tied to an initial injection of funds, renewable energy projects - like any construction project - stand to benefit from low interest rates that typically accompany a financial crisis. Now, those rates are close to zero. "The cost of capital is the biggest lever in the supply chain for all renewable energy projects," Rusch said. "As we see the cost of capital come down we see increasingly compelling economics for solar projects."Low interest rates make it easier for clean-energy companies to borrow money. And by lowering the upfront cost of power plants, they also lower the cost of the electricity those plants generate. Both forces fuel demand. Natalie Behring/ReutersInnovation is what drives down the cost of renewable energy, Sophie Karp, an analyst at KeyBanc, said.<h2>Other forces will drive down the cost of renewable energy, even within a recession </h2>The cost of electricity that comes from fossil fuels, such as natural gas or coal, is determined by commodity prices, which are volatile and unpredictable, says Pavel Molchanov, an analyst at Raymond James. Meanwhile, the price of renewable electricity has fallen consistently over the last decade in step with innovation, according to Sophie Karp, an analyst at KeyBanc.Since 2009, for example, the price of solar panels <a href="https://www.irena.org/costs">has fallen by 80%</a>; wind turbine costs have seen similar declines. "There's no reason to believe that the longer-term trend will stop," Karp said.And that's true whether or not the price of oil continues to slip, analysts said. In most parts of the world, oil is not an electricity source, so its cost is not a meaningful benchmark. The last time the price of oil collapsed, starting in 2014, it "didn't affect renewable growth at all," said Angus McCrone, chief editor at BloombergNEF, a clean-energy finance research firm. There's no reason to suspect a different outcome this time around. <h2>Utility-scale projects would be better insulated from a recession </h2>According to Molchanov, large, utility-scale solar and wind projects are "recession resistant" because they're generally managed by developers that have utility contracts. "That has nothing to do with the economy," he said. "Whether GDP is up or down, it makes no difference for a utility investment decision because utilities are regulated businesses."<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jpmorgan-renewable-energy-stocks-could-be-first-to-bounce-back-2020-3">Analysts at JPMorgan also note</a> that utility-scale solar is typically constructed in remote locations, so the spreading coronavirus will be less likely to hamper those projects. Utility-scale developments also have "long deployment cycles," the bank said <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jpmorgan-renewable-energy-stocks-could-be-first-to-bounce-back-2020-3">in a recent research note</a>, which makes them even more resilient to short-term impacts. David GreerApple's 14 megawatt solar array in Maiden, NC<h2>Corporations who buy renewable energy may delay projects</h2>Big companies like Google and Facebook are some of the largest buyers of renewable energy in the world. In 2019, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-10-clean-energy-firms-sold-most-power-last-year-2020-1">they bought a record 19.6 gigawatts of power</a>, which amounted to 10% of the clean energy added, globally, that year. In a recession scenario, corporations may be inclined to delay purchasing of renewable energy, Jeff Osborne, an analyst at Cowen, said, though he doesn't think that's "lost business." "It's more of a deferral," he said. The cheap price of oil could also shrink clean-energy spending by oil and gas giants, such as BP or Shell, McCrone said. "Oil companies - particularly European ones - have become pretty significant investors in renewables," McCrone said. "So if they're feeling under pressure, then it could be that they become not so keen to invest in renewables quickly." He says the oil price shock could actually steer these companies' strategies towards renewable energy. "This shock, showing just how violent the oil market can get, will steer some management teams into looking at wind and solar because they're not nearly as volatile or difficult to predict," he said. REUTERS/Mike BlakeCompanies that sell rooftop solar may take a hit in a recession, analysts said.<h2>Residential solar is likely to take a hit</h2>The impacts of a pandemic-fueled recession on residential solar are mixed, the analysts said. On one hand, cash-poor consumers are not going to be looking to make big purchases, and rooftop solar arrays cost around $20,000, according to Osborne. "I just don't see many couples saying 'Hey honey, let's drop $20,000 to put up the solar panels on the roof right now, even though we can save money and might have a five-year payback period,'" he said. That said, many companies including Sunrun and Sunnova offer leasing and loan options, which could be attractive deals in a recession. "Cash sales will definitely drop," Mochanov said. "Leasing and loans will be more protected." It's also possible that more customers will pursue rooftop solar for their homes to ensure a more stable supply of energy in the wake of the pandemic. "You couple this with extreme weather events and fires and I think this just increases demand," Brook Porter, a partner at the venture fund G2VP, said. If the corporation goes bankrupt, the PPA could be subjected to bankruptcy, she said. But when your panels are distributed across the homes of thousands of customers, "it's a diversified risk." <h2>Policies support renewable energy </h2>At least <a href="https://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/tracking-progress-on-100-clean-energy-targets">12 states and Puerto Rico</a> have made 100% clean energy commitments. And many more utilities across the country are required to meet what's called a renewable portfolio standard - meaning a percentage of their electricity must come from clean energy sources by a certain date. "The laws about decarbonization and renewable portfolio standards are going to still be enforced," Molchanov said, though he mentioned that most of them are set 20 or 30 years out in the future. There are also tax incentives for installing wind and solar energy called the Production Tax Credit (PTC) that are expiring in the next year or two. If they don't get extended in the government stimulus package, they could spur short-term growth. Utilities that own wind and solar assets have "tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars at stake," Osborne said. Karl Keirstead, managing director at Deutsche Bank, tells Business Insider that he thought <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/thomas-kurian-google-cloud-sales-account-director-2019-9">Google Cloud</a> would remain a "distant third," But the arrival of Google Cloud CEO <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/googlers-startup-execs-discuss-google-cloud-ceo-thomas-kurians-plans-2019-4">Thomas Kurian</a> who came from Oracle, "changed everything," he said. For one thing, Kurian has been making several <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-executives-leading-google-cloud-2019-9">new leadership hires</a> at <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeff-jennings-google-cloud-vmware-2019-8">Google Cloud</a>, which Keirstead calls "one of the most impressive bursts of hiring that we've ever seen from a large tech firm." What's more, even though <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-cloud-thomas-kurian-salespeople-compensation-oracle-sap-2019-8">Google Cloud</a> hasn't scored many "mega-deal wins" yet he says that large companies are increasingly viewing it as a viable option. "He's built a fantastic leadership team, essentially pulling talent from other tech organizations that also serve the large <keyword id="6356323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="enterprise">enterprise</keyword> market," Keirstead told Business Insider. The reason for the earlier skepticism didn't have much to do with Google Cloud itself."Having been built by Google, it's world class," Keirstead said. "Google has never built up an enterprise sales marketing branding and presence that can hold a candle to Microsoft. Whereas Amazon started relatively early and also didn't have as much of an enterprise presence, they just had longer to build it out."In the bigger picture, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-cloud-anthos-hybrid-cloud-william-blair-analysts-2019-7">Google Cloud</a> is making the right investments in hiring and infrastructure - and it's poised to go from an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-cloud-arr-earnings-8-billion-2019-7">$8 billion</a> cloud business today to nearly $17 billion in revenue in 2021, Deutsche Bank research analyst Lloyd Walmsley wrote in a note for clients."It's money well spent, and I think they will be able to scale to margins that look more to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/basecamp-google-cloud-amazon-aws-2019-8">AWS</a> in the next three to five years," Walmsley told Business Insider. "We don't think, looking three years from now, they'll get to AWS on the same scale, but we think they can get to attractive margins on a three to five year basis."<h2>New hires</h2>Under Kurian, Google Cloud plans to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-cloud-arr-earnings-8-billion-2019-7">triple its salesforce </a>in a move seemingly taken from his former employer Oracle. To help manage all that growth, Google Cloud has made some key hires. Keirstead highlights says former SAP exec <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-cloud-hires-sap-robert-enslin-lead-customer-operations-2019-4">Robert Enslin</a>, president of global customer operations, is a key hire. Others include VP and Head of Platform Amit Zavery from Oracle, EMEA President Chris Ciauri from Salesforce, Engineering VP Sunil Potti from Nutanix, and Engineering VP Yanbing Li from VMware.Those hires are a good start, say the Deutsche Bank analysts: It's not cheap to attract hires of that caliber, they say, but it's a worthy investment in helping signal to would-be customers how serious Google Cloud is about winning their business. However, the analysts warn, that doesn't automatically translate into winning those big deals. Some of Google Cloud's recent major customer wins include HSBC, Mayo Clinic, Macy's, and KeyBank.Keirstead said that he recently attended a Google Cloud event in New York City with mostly financial services and banks in attendance. He says that while it's true that most of them weren't Google Cloud customers, there's something to be said for the fact that these old-school institutions were at least taking it under serious consideration. "They tend to be cautious buyers that move relatively slowly," Keirstead said. "This will be one of the last big markets that Google Cloud will end up going after. We took some comfort in the fact that some very large banks were there, evaluating Google Cloud."Another aspect Google Cloud will have to fix <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-cloud-ceo-thomas-kurian-could-drive-culture-clash-analysts-say-2019-4">is cultural</a>. While Google has traditionally focused on the technology above all else, Walmsley said, it will have to learn how to take customers' concerns more seriously and act on them. "That's something culturally that may still encumber them," Walmsley said. <h2>'Currying favor' with developers</h2>Under the legacy IT model, it was the CIO or CTO who made major technology decisions, like picking which cloud to use. However, as evidenced by Microsoft's purchase of GitHub, cloud providers are becoming aware that it's increasingly developers who drive IT spending.He says in this sense, Google has an advantage because it's active in open source, the community of developers who write software that's free for anyone to use and download. Google engineers often contribute code to popular projects - the popular cloud project <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-aparna-sinha-kubernetes-interview-2019-3">Kubernetes</a> was even <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-kubernetes-google-cloud-2019-1">created at Google</a>. In comparison, while Amazon's cloud is known as being developer friendly, it has a reputation for using open source code without giving anything back, Keirstead says.
